  • The final episode of our fantastic tour of the Northumberland 250 sees us leave Alston to ride the brilliant B6277. I must admit I wasn't aware of this road until I watched "BanditmanUK" aka Richard and Carol's You Tube channel. They do an occasional video on Britain's Best Biking roads (We really recommend you check out their channel!). Thanks Richard! It was indeed a superb road to ride and during our coffee break in Middleton-in-Teesdale Sue bumped into a local couple (also bike riders) who gave us another tip and suggested we ride the B7267. It turned out to be another brilliant road and totally deserted - which could have been due to it being "closed"! Nevertheless, what a great ride and a big thanks to the workman who kindly let us through at the end! And so on the the stunning Lake District - obviously not on the Northumberland 250 but what a great way to finish of an amazing tour. Apart from the heavy traffic around Windermere, the ride into Langdale was sublime and the hotel was situated in the heart of the Langdale Valley - a stunning location. A great way to finish the tour. We hope you enjoy this final episode and as ever, if you do please gives us a THUMBS UP, comment, share and subscribe! Thank you for watching!

    Incidentally, I must have rode the B6276 Middleton to Brough shortly after you, and did as you did, ignored the signs and went on🙏. We got the the road works and a nice worker waved us through until further down the road we came across another set of road works, this time wasn't as easy getting through but with a few shaking heads we managed 👍. A beautiful road and oddly a totally different ride in the opposite direction. Thanks again for sharing your experience in what's my local riding roads.

      @@midlifemotorcyclediaries I must get up to Northumberland sometime. Although I am a born n bred Devonian, nearly all of my more distant family are Tynesiders. There is a place/area in N’land inland of Alnwick called Biddlestone. I think that, in days of yore, my illiterate, bumpkin forebears probably migrated from the countryside to Newcastle. When their educated betters heard them pronounce where they came from that they would then have written that as “Bittlestone” whereas the surname would still be pronounced “Biddlestone” in a Geordie twang….

    Great finale to your tour. I just checked our old routes and we did both of those B roads three years ago on a mini tour with friends to N Yorks and Northumberland. We stopped in a place called Stanhope for lunch. I seem to remember lunch stops more than some of the roads! 🤔
    Watching you two inspired me to get on my bike today for the first time in four weeks. So thank you!! Can’t deny my arm was still aching from my recent fall, but was nice to get out for coffee and cake, even though it was a shortish ride. Hi David, what a lovely note. Thank you so much. I’m so happy to have had a part in getting your wife to ride. Learning really was one of my better decisions! I’m not sure if you’ve watched the videos showing my various bike choices but I started with a BMW GS700 (lower chassis- even though I am 5’6” with quite long legs - longer than Bri’s 😉🤫) Getting my feet flat really gave me some confidence on my first big bike. It took me a while to get used to my Tiger 800 because it was so much more top heavy and I’m personally more comfortable on the 900 where the centre of gravity is significantly lower. Having said that, I know some people prefer the 800 so you guys could have fun trying them both. Wishing you both miles of smiles and thank you for watching our adventures ☺️👍

    • @davidlee4966
      @davidlee4966 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@midlifemotorcyclediaries yes, I think we have seen virtually all the videos, your comment about where the centre of gravity is located is not something I have considered between the 800 and 900, I ride an Africa twin and that quite top heavy and takes a bit of getting used to in low speed traffic. We are planning a trip to motorcycle live in December so a good opportunity to look at everything under one roof. My wife is about to watch episode 4,she does like your triumph a lot, she is 5ft 9 long in the leg so she can fit most bike, which includes my Africa twin, better hide the key😂

    Thanks for another cracking video - always appreciated! Try not to be too hard on the hotel staff - the Lake District was very badly affected by Brexit, owing to the disproportionate number of Eastern Europeans working in the hospitality industry around there. Many have returned, and I'm told it's very difficult to recruit staff due to the cost of housing around there. I think it'll get better, but no time soon 😕

    • @midlifemotorcyclediaries
      @midlifemotorcyclediaries  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks very much Jonny! We appreciate your comments 😀 and we definitely take you point about the Eastern Europeans 😟 but our main issue was with the attitude of certain staff - no excuse for that, but your absolutely right about the trouble hiring new staff because of the cost of housing - a sad state of affairs. But thanks again for watching! 😀👍

    Thank you, I really enjoyed the ride as most of the roads I have ridden before. Just wanted to comment on the road closed signs. I think this is as a result of that invasive little creature Elfin Safety, he is getting everywhere these days. Unless the road closed sign displays the permit number (like the Police needing a warrant), the road closure is not legal and anyone stopping you from using the Queens highway is breaking the law so you are within your rights to arrest that person (as civilians we have similar powers of arrest as the Police, who are civilian in uniform in the eyes of the law). Now I am not advocating that this is a good idea but just because someone puts a sign up doesn't make that sign legal or binding. You did exactly the right thing. Be courteous and humble and thankful and that usually works. If not demand that the person stopping you shows you the permit number for the road closure. If they have one then you can turnaround, if not then you are within your rights to demand the number or the person cannot, legally stop you from continuing your journey. OK, if there is something like a bridge down then that is understandable but not for the tiny bit of work we could see on your video.
    I know about this because in a previous life I used to run a very large transport business and "illegal" road closures we a real pain when one had a 44 tonne artic and no where to turn around. I did spend many days in court fighting such stupidity. Its sad to see that this is happening more and more.

We’re glad you enjoyed it 👍 and in particular, thanks for the information about road closures - that’s really good to know for future reference - it makes us feel a bit better about pushing on 😀 obviously being courteous and humble - it’s always the best way to be! Thanks for watching 😀👍

    Fantastic roads and scenery, closures are always a “yes/no” decision, went through one the other day and had help of a cyclist coming the other way to get the scooter past a physical barrier via a sloping verge. Eventful today too on my filmed ride as I went down a green lane that finally became impassable (unless riding an off-roader) then I never made it home due to drive belt (it’s an auto) snapping. Abandoned it in farm building (with permission of owner) as no point getting recovery people out on a day repair shop is closed. All fun :)
