  • Season 6 brought the first big game kill on the history of Alone. Some folks thought it was fabulous, some were horrified. I saw a lot of comments and got a few personal messages about it. In this video I talk about my opinion about some of these comments and concerns about this kill, and hunting in general

Ah thanks Woniya! The shot of me saying thank you, and giving a huge hug to the moose didn't make it on there, and the countless times I expressed utmost gratitude....I appreciate your time and your great explanation of the situation - it shows you know what your talking about and your such a good teacher! Nice woven rabbit scarf )))... (I was glad it was a male moose so as not to affect the population in any significant way...)

Jordan was indeed a skilled and worthy competitor and I was glad to see him make it to the end. • @TheJustinJ
      @TheJustinJ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

There are 7 billion people on earth.
There are at most maybe 1/4 million Elk or 2-3 million deer in any given state.
Its not possible to feed the world with wild game. Wild game can support the worlds population from 15,000ya. Which is a couple of million people, at most.
"Factory" farming is the only way to provide quality animal based protein for everyone, especially impoverished people. The countries that dis-allow factory farming by law (India), or by being degenerate nations (Africa), all have overwhelming malnutrition of their average population. And those two examples are 1.3B & 1B people.

Great video! You make many great points. Until you brought it up, I had never thought about the issue of where animals actually feel pain. I'm a CT scan technologist, and we often times assist our radiologists in performing CT guided biopsies. As soon as you mentioned how often times internal organs don't have much sensation, I thought about how when we do lung biopsies, the only part that causes the patient discomfort is the initial needle stick in the skin and external tissue, and then when the biopsy needle pokes through the lining of the lung (the pleura). Once inside the lung, the patient doesn't feel the needle. Other organ biopsies are similar in that usually only the more external tissue needs to be numbed up, while the organs feel little. Yes, what it takes for us to be able to put a bite of meat in our mouths isn't a pretty process, but I do feel that wild game, hunted respectfully, is probably the prettiest way that this can be done. Way too many people these days seem to think that meat is just somehow magically created in some back refrigerator at the local grocery store. I've heard several people complain over the years that they, "can't eat meat off of a bone". I just have to laugh at such out-of-touch thinking, while being disturbed at the same time. I'm pretty sure that these people would be utterly shocked to see that their chicken nugget not only grew on a bone, but that it also came from a chicken that lived its short life in a crowded, filthy, stinking, factory farm building. Or I'd love to see their faces when they see the cow that their hamburger came from, in a feed lot pin, literally almost covered from head to hoof in feces. Yep, meat procurement isn't pretty, but most folks these days are so insulated from where their food comes from that they don't have clue. At any rate, great thoughts! And I'm looking forward to seeing how the remainder of Alone season 6 shakes out!
    -Gareth

Great explination! I have archery hunted for 40+ years, and I immediately knew that he hit one lung and the liver. Both lungs, the moose would have been dead in a matter of a minute or two. The deep red blood indicates a liver hit, which is very common if the animal is slightly quartering to you.
One lung isn't exactly fatal as both lungs, but a liver shot is fatal. He absolutely did hit one lung, which is indicated by the bubbles.
How Jordan handled the recovery is exactly what I would have done it. A follow-up shot could have ended up with a lost dead moose.
As for those saying the moose suffered? He lived his entire life free, and died much more humane than mauled by a bear, which is natural.
Great show and my hats off to you guys!

This is incorrect. 1) Blood that leaves the lung once oxygenated will be deeply red. It does not indicate a liver hit. The color is indicative of the organ uptake of oxygen. 2) You have no idea which way the animal quartering you. It is possible he hit the liver but he could have not. One lung shot is fatal because the pool will eventually pool in the lung and you will drown in your own blood, not to mention the blood loss.

This was a great season of the show and you two were by far my favorite contestants. I would have been so happy to see either of you win. When I knew it was down to you 2, I was happy that one of you would win, but sad that I would have to see one of you "lose". However, Woniya, you're exit was my favorite in the show's history: both joyful and bittersweet. -Powerful and graceful; very "you". - Certainly not a loss of anything other than some money that wasn't yet yours.
This video of you coming to support of one of your "competitors" just reinforces that the way you where portrayed on the show was is in fact reality.
This video should be shown to anyone who doesn't understand winning/losing AND anyone who doesn't understand hunting.
I will look forward to sharing your season of the show and your videos like this one with my daughters when they are old enough.
Thankyou for all you have shared and given.

Late to the game, but this video is very well thought out and presented. Really appreciate your perspective.
In the past 3-4 years my family has moved to an (almost) exclusively wild game diet. It's incredible how much more healthy the meat is for you, how nutritious it is, and how that "meat sweat"/"sunk in the gut" feeling from high fat domestic meats does not happen with venison.
I also appreciate knowing that our meat comes from the lives of only an animal or two per year, and that the animals I eat had the chance to love a beautiful, wild life. Again thank you!

Woniya, I am new to the Alone series and have just finished watching season 6. I am not a woodsman, a hunter or an "outdoors-man"as referred to here, more a hiker, mountaineer and rock climber - although at a modest level, but watching this show has given me a new respect for for those "other" outdoors men and women.
I loved your video, every word rings with sincerity and truth, and for me, a non-hunter, it is a revaluation.
I'm glad you are looking so well after your hardships and feel the experience was worthwhile even though you came up just one place out of the prize. You came in second to a great contestant - Jordan,a worthy winner, you both had great attitudes and an indomitable spirits.

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

Jordan did a great job on JRE explaining why he didn’t want to sneak up on it and try hitting it again. From over 20 yards his recurve bow begins to loose velocity and the arrow begins to arc ... he was over 50 yards from that moose and did not have a good shot available to him. He also explained that another arrow could spook the moose and cause it to run again, but having already bled out substantially there would be no blood trail to follow and the animal would be lost.

Woniya! What a doll you are! Your comments are all right on. You know what you're talking about. I have been teaching survival techniques for 50 years for the military. I am so impressed with your abilities. I was sorry you couldn't win, but Jordan really did deserve to win. I was impressed with his skills and knowledge are well. When I saw him build a ladder the way he did I was amazed. When I saw him wait instead of stalk the moose I recognized his knowledge of big game hunting. I am a hunter and a fisherman I have always respected the game I've killed and admired their beauty. I also have a bit of sadness when doing so, but I make sure that nothing is wasted. That's just to let you know that I know what I'm talking about so you know that there were people watching who recognized that you were good. No, actually better than good, you were fantastic! I am so happy to be able to speak to someone who I was unable to respond to while being separated by TV. It's not often you get to speak to anyone you're watching perform.
If I ever had to be in a survival situation and could choose two people to be with me it would be you and Jordan. Bravo for YOU!

I wondered if that directly affected your ability to stay out there so long, because your minds were busy and always coming up with new projects. Two Natal Yods You are kidding, right? Women have the same chance to win that like men. What exactly can men do that women can’t do there?
In fact many women at the show were tougher than their male competitors.
Hysterical crying after 6 weeks and calling out for wifie is not exactly winning material.

I only just saw the final episode last night and was heartbroken you had to leave, but what else could you do? Money can't take the place of thriving health in the long run. So glad you talked about the moose kill. He absolutely did the right thing, and it's always hard to witness the death of a beautiful animal. But as you talked about with the slaughterhouses, that is a far worse death than any skilled hunter could cause. Hunting is the THE most humane way of procuring meat. Far more big game starve to death than are ever taken by hunters. Who would want that suffering?? Wolf kills are gruesome indeed, but it's part of the circle of life. Thank you for this thoughtful and well-spoken video.

Woniya and Jordan were both my favorite top 2 people. I wanted either of them to win and I’m so glad that they both ended up as top 2. Both of them were so humble and grateful with their time in the arctic. None of them expressed arrogance or saying they were going to win. They just kept on going and worked with what they got. This was a great season to watch.
