Holy crap, Dave... I've been just astonished at what you and Brooke can do with all your off-grid cabin stuff and you're, like, hold my beer... watch us go 7 weeks minimalist hardcore survival in brutal deep bush north Vancouver Island. Currently binging Season 1 Alone. I think after that I'm going break with what I normally do with a TV series (systematically watch every season) and jump straight to Season 4 so I can watch you guys do your thing. Just watched the clip of you and Brooke reuniting in Season 4 after your 9 day (?) compass hike. Haven't cried in decades but honestly have to admit that got me a little misty-eyed...lol
Whenever the pandemic lockdown/restrictions/whatever gets me down, I just put on some BushRadical or Girl In the Woods and it's like a big slap in the face...lol. Brings me right down. It's hugely motivational. It's like, these guys are out there in the woods doing THAT and I'm here getting crabby about a litte pandemic cabin fever? Big thumbs up and thanks for everything you guys do. Huge respect. :)

    Awesome stories Dave!
One of my rules: if you are alone in the dangerous area and your headlamp is broken or something like that and it is a really black night (no moon etc.) you have to stay, where you are, and wait for the morning sun. You don't want to walk in the dark and break your leg on a root or fall off a rock. Just be patient and wait for the better moment to walk. But I really haven't used this rule yet, because I always take a spare flashlight.
    Take care everybody!

Thanks Dave, you are a natural story teller! My dad and I went on a mountain hike in winter in the Lake District of England, we were in a party of 4 and the two other guys decided that they did not want to ascend Scafell, the highest peak, as darkness was not too far away. So we made a plan and agreed a route they should take to get down into the local village where there was a hostel. Dad and I forged on and darkness was soon upon us so we removed our pack and aimed to retrieve our flashlights only to find they were in our companions' packs. Long Story Short...there was no Moon, low clouds smothered the peak and we decided to spend the night on the snowy peak as we were aware there were some sheer cliffs ahead. Now unpacking a tent and erecting it in the pitch dark is not something I ever wish to do again, at best we scrabbled in the dark and created a rough bivvi to keep snow and wind off us. The snow had some weird pin prick luminous specks in it...I never knew what they were and have never seen them again. Daylight revealed we were a few yards from the precipice! We made our way down into the valley to be met by the local SARS (Search and Rescue Team) who were happy to see us safe...naturally we made a handsome donation to them for their inconvenience! Just amazed how those Hickory knots beat up your good old Hudson Bay Knife :)

You're a natural story teller brother. From the crackling fire, to the rain on the roof, you created an awesome "storytime" video!
Lol... I kept thinking, I wish I were by that fire. Listening to that rain. Drinking coffee with Bailey's (my added touch). With cool stories to tell people in my Alaskan cabin. :/ Geeze... I wanna be Dave! Lol.

Dave, awesome story about the knife. I had a similar experience when i was deer hunting in Utah back in the 80s... i walked out of the camp trailer in the middle of the night and lost my bearings in the darkness when my flashlight died. i had to wait about 15 minutes for my eye to focus enough to see the outline of the trailer to get back and it wasn't more then 30 feet from me. I have so much respect for what you and your wife went threw on your season of Alone. i usually take a summer vacation and go fishing and camping alone, so i can relate to how quite it can get. i have had it so quiet that the only thing you can hear is your own breathing. it changes your perspective on life. granted i am only out there 6-9 days tops. i can only imagine being alone for 60-90 days. and then adding in the lack of food on top of that just seems unreal to me. my next trip i am going to have to try it with just 10 items and not taking food with me, just so i can get a better grasp the experience you all went threw. i have a decent set of outdoor skills, so i defiantly want to try it. i doubt i could make it much more that a few days, but i really want to try it, just for the experience of it. I would love to hear more of this kind of stories from Alone participants.

    • @Bushradical

When I heard this, that makes me so humble because you were amazing to watch. We have respect, Mr Whipple, serious respect for you and Brooke. I am adding this later because I realize how hard every person on that show worked, and I do not mean to critize. I know that even on my best day I would not even get off that helicopter. Great job and you and Brooke were amazing and fun to watch.

keep putting yourself in the shoes of people who want to go on the show and never have. There's a distinct lack of Alone content out there. like how does it REALLY feel to be on the show - emotionally, physically, spiritually. I know youve covered some of that already, but when youre actually there, is it harder/easier than it looks? that kinda stuff would be awesome. keep up the great content mate

Hi Dave, awesome to hear more of what actually happened! To sum up my opinion "wow bud, and I thought you had it hard just watching the show on tv" which led me to believe that they should give out a "he went above and beyond" award to people like you, Rock On! Even more respect for team Whipple Okay, back to the show, lol, one thing I'd like to point out is that I noticed that some of it is in luck of location as well, and you and Brooke's location in season 4 is a good example, having that open area to build in was a godsend for sure, and still close to the coast for fishing, very fortunate I'd say in my simple opinion bud. As for the current season in Mongolia, wow, what a chaotic season, half my favorites down fast almost out of the gate, heartbreaking to say the least, but back to the new location, I see it as tougher in some ways, easier in others, still a total pain in the ass lol. I was sorry to see Brooke tap this season, but when I saw her shelter, my first thought was "she's gonna move or upgrade, that's not gonna cut it for her" and it turned out to be true in a way, but I love what she did and I'm proud that a part time Michigander Rocked On again on Alone! Two thumbs up to you and Brooke and two middle fingers up to those that thumb down this video, love both of your channels bud, Rock On!!!

I just got into Alone recently and loved you two. Reminds me of my own wonderful relationship of teamwork, mutual respect, and love. I know this is an older video, but maybe I'll get a lucky response. I'm so curious as to whether or not you could hear other contestants or their echoes when they yell or scream, because I know you can hear wolves from miles away.

You and Brooke are the real winners. You both have all the skills for what it takes to survive. Just thinking of that mansion and it's fireplace you built... nobody got anywhere near that accomplished.
It's just such a pity the food supplies ran out.
Having said that, I spose having all the skills are nullified if there is no food source. Brooke was hurting my heart everytime I saw her towards the end.
Just noticed that coffee pot over your left shoulder, that is defo the one you took with you... right?

I often find that when looking for something you remember having in your hand and not being able to find it, is to take a break, sit and have a coffee or whatever, read a paper, just anything to take your mind off it. When you do that, you tend to find it very quickly after the break.

My dad logged on Vancouver Island, he called hemlock tomcat wood because when you would burn it, it created a smell like a tom cat had marked his territory. When new guys would come into camp he would put a piece on the fire and pretty soon the guys would be checking out their bedding and stuff to see where the cat had peed. It would be neat if the show would let you go through the material and make a video about your time from your perspective. Thanks for sharing.

    Hi Dave. That was great.
I have been trying to get on Alone since season one. No luck yet, so I am hopeful for 2019. I pray they continue the series and hope some producer type finds me....
You guys did great. Loved hearing your stories. Thanks!

Great stories. 👍 Please don’t risk your life in the darkness ever again. They most likely did that headlight charging stunt intentionally. Sounds so Hollywood. They are run by monsters. 🤨 I’m glad you made it out alive, and Brooke came to your rescue. 😎

Head torches, I've tried quite a few. The only one I buy and recommend is the petzl pixa3. Good features, good light, good battery life, tough, value for money.

Great story about the knife hunt and the head-light! I last Saturday we were camping at Carr Fork Lake in Kentucky. I woke up just before 4:am and decided to get in some fishing, I took only my tacklebox and fishing pole. I walked across the campground and then a large lighted parking lot to a long walking path that went to the lake. As I got near the beach I heard some banging and thumping coming from the path ahead... about 200 yards... in the dark. I was still wearing my head-lamp ($1.00 Walmart style). I saw only the reflection from eyes. Then the hair on the back of my neck stood up as I realized those eyes were both forward facing and kinda far apart. I shouted hey! Get outta here! ...then it stood up, and I was looking at a black bear about 7 feet tall! I shouted, rattled my tackle box and raised my arms as high as I could... he just stood there like " I see you, and I don't care..." I veered off the path and fished the beach until daylight, with my head on a swivel! I caught 2 big catfish and went back to camp. No camera, I did take my wifes tablet back and got some photos. I have some classic pics of the paw prints and sweeping claws! I shared pics with a ranger and told him about the bear sighting.

Yeah, I usually carry a Cold Steel knife like a security blanket. I had my head on a swivel until daylight! I did catch 2 big catfish and cleaned and cooked before 8:am... the kids came out of the tents pretty fast for breakfast! :) then I told everyone about the bear I named Shaquille O'Neal!

I’ve always wanted to hear more about what everyone goes through and does, all of the scenes we don’t get to see. Thank you for that. Couple questions:
    1. How hard was the land navigation? Did they really just give you an azimuth and let you go? No updates to get people back on track? I like land nav and it seemed like such a challenge in that environment.
    2. Was there ever a time out exploring where you would almost lose your way back to your shelter (man that would be tough)
    3. If there’s a non-disclosure or you’re sworn to secrecy no worries, but if not what is the weekly stipend or pay that contestants get?
    Thanks!

    • @Bushradical
      @Bushradical  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

We all got paid $1500 / week. As for the land it was the hardest travel ive ever done without question. The country was trail-less, super thick, brushy, steep, wet, and totally broken. Most nights it took 20 minutes or more just to find a spot to lay down.

    • @MrGlobalTransport
      @MrGlobalTransport 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Bushradical thanks for the reply. I’m seriously considering trying out for the show. All the people I’ve seen seem like really good folks and it would be a community I would want to be a part of. It feels like the military and other places I’ve been, in the sense that unless you’ve lived it you really don’t fully understand what it’s like. And more importantly it gives people that common bond of having been through that hardship and coming out the other side of it more enlightened. Hope to meet ya one day when I make it!

Regarding your knife and headlamp story... I have a Petzl rechargeable headlamp that does much the same thing. It'll flash a few times before it goes out, as a warning, but you have to really pay attention! After a couple of times of the "oh crap, now what?" situations, I went and bought a spare battery-pack for it. Unfortunately for you guys, that wasn't an option!

Nice to hear your stories Dave! I have a question, do they set travel boundaries for the contestants so they won't wander into each other? If so, how big is your area and how do they define it for you? "Don't wander past that tree over there and that hill over there" or?? Thanks!

    • @Bushradical
