As great as this explanation is, one just dont have the time to analyse it in such detail at game time.

Commenting here and the other video.
My fav video was "when in doubt, place it out." Before, I would place on solely my wishes, and would get blindsided by what others picked. Being able to think through what others wanted ahead of time allowed my 2nd placement to always be stronger, which has drastically increased my gameplay.

I'm so neurotic I was doing this for a long time as a beginner and intermediate player, but in my head, without the tactical nous, such that it would take ages before I played, annoy my friends and family, and fail to remember or have it clearly set out in my head and so be self-defeating in the process. I'd try to invent all the strategic and tactical knowledge in my head in a single game lmao
I wish my earlier self had seen this vid. I can therefore recommend this vid and playing it out in hard copy form. Draw it out or use your own cities if you have to (and they'd be confused enough to conceal exactly what you're doing). You'd probably look less like an idiot in the long run

I instinctively always took strong wheat as first position on the assumption i would get locked out of wheat if i dont. The only time i dont do this is if i can see strong wheat on a port that is unlikely to be taken. I also like to lock players out of wheat as 4th and 5th position if the players before me got too greedy snagging brick and ore. Even if i dont need the extra wheat i just take it to lock them out.

I think thats your best viedeo so far, I have to say. 👍
Start at the game is really important as it influences the whole rest of the game so I think people should be mus h more informed about it. 🤔
But never ever grey takes the sheep spot 9/10/3. I can't Imagine that this is the right decision if it takes the 10 wood for the 1st seatlement (which I'd personally do) because orange has the 5s to win the game and upgrade very fast. 🤔
But nice to see your thouguts 👌

Hey, love the video and content - learning heaps about catan from you! Just a heads up, I think some viewers might be turned away by the r slur earlier in the vid, even if you're quoting someone else. Maybe next time you can censor it to show viewers you're not so cool with it?

I'd have liked if you didn't just repeat the no wheat equals defeat mantra and actually walked is through whether that would be true here. There are winnable games without starting wheat. Was this one of them?
Also, that position have you your best start, but did it give another player an even better one? It looks like you start at a disadvantage. Would another starting spot have balanced it out better?

Question: At 7:17: According to rule 18, you should choose the rare resource right? So if that's the case, wouldn't the rare resource be the 8 brick?

  • @collinm.9386

I understand why you avoided the 5/8/10 because you would not get wheat, but in your scenario, orange winds up with both. If you are playing competent opponents, wouldn't blocking player two be a priority?

  • @dantheman5745
    @dantheman5745 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

Nice! I'm just not sure the game allows you that much time to map out everybody's moves. And even if the game did, I haven't encountered any other players with that amount of patience. After about 20 seconds message start popping up asking what your problem is. (when we play the tabletop game board version with friends, we always allow LOADS of time for everybody's 1st two settlements)

Good Observation! I don’t play much on the actual elo ladder anymore. I arrange custom games with competitive players. In custom games you have infinite time. Also, this took me about 6 minutes to figure out.

If someone complains that I'm taking too long in an online game, I just respond "I'm thinking" and keep going. Placement's the most important decision of the game, so any reasonable player should be ok with that. And as the last comment pointed out, you'll get faster at this with practice.

How come you wouldnt place your second settlement on 10/11/3? (If you go 9/5/10) You get a free road to start and can go to the 9/10/2 and cut off the 9/4/11 person

Why isn't the 10-3-11 a viable 4th placement option? It give you better sheep, you can cut off white to the 9 10 2 spot and potentially build on the northwest coast.

After having played this match, would there have been some merit to placing on the desert/road?
It looked like you were blocking yourself on an easier settlement option around the 12 sheep. It would have costed 1 less road, or the road that you used for current placement could have allowed connection of your areas.

Saying the r word in this video is one of my regrets and I wish I could take it back. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize how insensitive it was at the time. I hope you forgive me. Personally, I don’t say this in my vocabulary but I was simply trying to summarize what someone else said to me. No matter what the context was, I should have not said it.
