    Why are you all Nigerians relocating to Kenya?why can't you stay in your country?

    • @motosana1
      @motosana1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Because Africa is one! There are many Kenyans in Nigeria too. There are several Nigerian investments here - banks, IT companies and churches to name a few. Remember KQ also has offices in Nigeria. Nigeria is a large buyer of our flowers and soon tea. There are also many Nigeria students at private universities in Nairobi.
      Clearly you have never left your village!

    Good insights on Kenya 👌
    How can one pay house rent for a year or two in advance in Nigeria/Ghana!? That's exploitation! Are there no landlord/tenant regulations by the government to safeguard both parties?
    In Kenya the most you can pay is 2-3 months in advance only once as security deposit and it's also refundable.

    • @Iamblakcoffee
      @Iamblakcoffee  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thanks for this great question 😁 we live in a crazy world out there, no one listens and there’s no government agency to ensure these things are done the way it should be or rather there are agencies for this but they don’t do their job.
      In Ghana for instance the government has said no landlord is allowed to take more than a year’s worth of rent but when you go house hunting the landlord insists he wants 2 years rent, take it or leave it.
      And to make a refund when you’re ready to move out is another issue, one which I am currently facing right now (my landlord hasn’t refunded me for 7 months rent and he has taken payment from another occupant as soon as I moved) it’s the crazy things that happen in west Africa. Rules without regulations are just useless

    • @lifehacks1019
      @lifehacks1019 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Iamblakcoffee That's atrocious! Governments anywhere should protect the weak!
      In Kenya,we have Rent Restrictions Tribunal anchored in law to protect both tenant and landlord for either residential or commercial rent space.
      No rent increment can be imposed without an advance notice and if need be a review of the rents to an agreeable rate.
      Before a landlord can kick out a tenant, a three months notice to vacate must be issued with an option to refund or utilize the deposit to the tenant.
      Same with tenant,if he's the one initiating the space vacation,he must issue a one month notice to the landlord. This gives both parties ample time to arbitrate any issue that might arise between them. Also gives landlord time to assess and revalue his property in case of any vandalism by tenant. In case of any vandalism to the house/premises,the tenant forfeits the deposit money or chips in more to cater for the extend of the breakage.
      Such a tribunal with full-time legal staff brings sanity to real estate business where everyone's investments or interests are protected.
      An absentee landlord is obliged to appoint a full-time qualified agent or caretaker for everyday management of the property like cleanliness, security and safety, water and power consistency and occasionally repairs etc.
      All these measures ensures that a renter feels at home away from home and the landlord reasonably gains from his investment without necessarily exploiting others.
      In this regard compared to West African, I feel we are blessed here although much need still to be done.
      Thanks for the insights

      @@lifehacks1019 oh y’all are blessed you truly have no idea. When I travelled down here from Ghana I still had most of my furniture in the apartment which I intend to sell. Before I would even get to Ethiopia for the layover my landlord already broke into my apartment saying he wants to make sure every is intact, when in fact there’s nothing in the apartment that is his, he rented to me a completely empty apartment. Everything done inside was all me so I wondered “what exactly was he checking for, like was I going to run away with the television he didn’t put in the apartment or the air-conditioner which I bought” what exactly ? It was just a stupid act from a stupid person which in fact should be illegal but that’s west Africa for you, it’s sad but it’s the reality of things. It’s a much better life out here, things are coordinated and no one is allowed to do rubbish because there’s a law that governs everything and punishment for any violation and enforcement and of these laws. 🥰 after a few days here in Nairobi I’m glad I took the leap and relocated here 🥳

      @@Iamblakcoffee Take heart that nothing lasts forever and moreso poor services in customer-centric industries like the real estate.
      Welcome to Nairobi!
      A few tips though;
      *Never sign a long-term lease agreement unless it's under your company or corporate that is paying for it. Contracts should be open-ended with minimum notice to vacate from both sides.
      *When renting,go for apartments in multi-dwelling blocks and if it's single unit bungalow,go for gated communities or estates. Services here are centralized and security optimum.
      *On top of location and amenities, also ensure that there's ample and secure car park if you drive. Ideally a 1-2 bedroom unit is allocated 1 car park while 3-4-5 bedrooms unit 2 car park slots. This is due to the average family size per unit and possible assumption that a large family will probably be having 2 cars. This is never a deal breaker though it's generally a norm.
      *Always know the contact person for key service provision if the unit caretaker isn't a resident within. Some units charge service charge on monthly rent and any emergency fixings are catered therein. So don't let anyone charge you for any fixture that ain't your making.
      *Most family size units come with an extra house-help accommodation (Servant's Quarter SQ). You can have your house girl stay in there or sublet it for extra income.
      *Water supply although connected from the city mains, most units have emergency water provision from drilled water wells (boreholes). Always check with your caretaker whenever borehole water is temporarily connected so as to separate usage. Only use borehole water for cleanings or bathing and never for cooking or drinking.
      *Utilize solar heated bath water to minimize on electricity bill. Most multiple dwelling units have solar heating systems.
      *If with kids,ensure the units have ample play areas either common or private yards. If not rent near such amenities for the convenience and safety of your kids
      *In case you have a pet like a dog or cat, endure they're vaccinated to comply with the city public health laws. Always secure them not to roam public common areas. But first confirm with the unit management if they allow pets at all.
      *In case you live in a gated community with a kitchen garden,seek the help of the groundsman and plant fast growing vegetables and fruits. Although the management might want to restrict extra usage of water for irrigation,always there's a solution with them.
      *Electricity bills are conveniently paid on Mpesa for both prepaid and postpaid meters. The best is the prepaid token system where you decide how much power to use at what given timeframe. It's also easy to track your home power usage with token system.
      Also check if your house unit has standby power generator for occasional power outage. Although power outages are minimal, there will always be a public notice for any disruption from the Kenya Power company (KPLC) either on Twitter,FB or print media. Date,time and location of outage will clearly be stipulated.
      I hope this helps and as you make Nairobi your home,I say Karibu Nyumbani ... Welcome Home! 😊

      Hilarious! Not because of generator, not hustling and bustling. First we never knew we were talking louder than other nationals until it was pointed out. We do so unknowingly. Maybe high temperature raises the activities of our systems , thereby making us very active.I can now recall our primary school teachers always asking us to speak loudly if we were answering questions in low tone in the class even when there was no generator within the environment. Then it was like speak loudly for everyone to hear you if you are confident of what you are saying. That transformed me from a soft spoken person to a loud speaker. Cheers.happy new year.from Nigeria.

      Trust me, your country is heaven. Was there for a week in Nov last year, and I must say its the best country I have been to (and I have been to a few). It has its downs, but on average, it beats any other place. Good infrastructure, lovely and friendly people, common language for everyone, and, unlike other countries in Africa, Kenyans do not hate other Africans. The love I experienced there was on another level. I am planning an early retirement in an African country (I am Zimbabwean working in the UK) , and Kenya has just shot to the top of my list, way above my native Zim.
