Happy Friday🎉 Today we are discussing female r&b. What do you guys think of the trajectory of women in the genre? Grab you snack, kick your feet up, there’s a lot to unpack today😉
Today’s female R&b artists are definitely selling an image mixed in with basic lyrics that the casual consumer can grasp . The lyrics unfortunately are meaningless, obscure, and targets an audience that dislikes men. Our artists prior to them made hits that have replay value, which many are touring off of them today, continue to decades from now
I would describe "Hookah R&B" as toxic love songs with very processed vocals and heavily HipHop influenced production
EXACTLY
….A few names came to mind.
That’s a pretty good condensed definition, straight to the point, and it does kind of make sense
IM SORRY BUT LASH TECH RNB TOOK ME OUT. FLOOOREEEDD ME. Can someone please tell me wtf that is?!? 😂😂😂😂😂
@@karl2624I’m going to make a giant guess and say it’s the type of song you’d expect a lash tech to post their work to 😭🙏🏾
Honestly, this makes me think about Ari Lennox. Ari Lennox should be bigger than what she is. She’s bringing that neo-soul R&B music back from the late 90s/early 00s, and I really hate how some people don’t appreciate the albums she has dropped (I want another album from her so bad plus i been playing the heck out of Mean Mug 🥲).
Yeah, Ari Lennox is really in a lane of her own within the mainstream R&B! I really like a lot of her stuff. I just hate how she was treated on to her not too long ago so I hope she can keep that motivation and people will put some respect on her name
I totally agree, I’ve had her albums on repeat lately! I think Muni Long has a very similar quality, bringing back a sound in female R&B that’s not super present rn
That first album was a classic the second one was a let down to me.
@@ay3itsalicethat would work if Muni Long had better song writing. How many songs about sex and hating men can you stack in an album?
Oh yesssss I loveeee Mean Mug!! Like sis is really singing her heart out on that one 🥹
I also believe that it’s not just the vocals, but it’s the mellow beats that they use as well that results in the watered down rnb sound that we have now. Even when the singer has strong vocals, the song never seems to resonate with me bc the beat doesn’t hit like I want it to. I think it’s bc they don’t use instruments anymore since everything is done on a computer now. Edit: I made this comment before finishing the video and you actually touched on this too
This is so true! Thank you for elaborating because I touched on it but very briefly. I think this is a major factor that a lot of of the girls who can sing aren’t choosing the right music or are choosing sleepy beats
Everything is just so mediocre and done with no effort or passion. People are just way too privileged nowadays to sit and put pen to paper, study the greats and give it their all. Everyone too busy trying to show how cute they are on social media. Inflated egos combined with delusional fans have them thinking they are as good as the legends.
@CamrynSuzanne When I write, I find it takes hours, days, sometimes even months to find a beat that not only matches ME, but today's sound. I end up choosing just to wait until I find one 🤷🏿♂️
@@CamrynSuzanneWhen I write, I find it takes hours, days, sometimes even months to find a beat that not only matches ME, but today's sound. I end up choosing just to wait until I find one 🤷🏿♂️
@@EarCandyPisces that’s why it’s important for artists to take time to craft their music. But labels don’t care about authenticity, they only care about making a quick buck off these artists. So they force them to spit out music left and right without a break
Omg nobody else is talking about this!!! I miss when I used to FEEL their emotions in their voices. I haven’t gotten goosebumps from a song in a long time. The only recent song I can think of that gave me that feeling was muni long made for me. If I want to FEEL something in rnb music, I go back to 90’s and early 2000’s rnb.
I’m so glad I can make a video about this because I feel like it’s a bit of a hush hush conversation, even though I know a lot of people feel this way or have been discussing it!
This the one. I watched SWVon Tiny desk and the first note made me shiver.
@@nburex1163Agree now it’s a few artists, I got chills from Halle Bailey with her version of under the sea -The Little Mermaid, I Literally was crying.
I got that w that coco Jones song
FLO’s opening set on the Crash tour blew me away, felt like a step back in time to 90s/00s girl groups with a step into the future production-wise!
This video was incredible and educational and real, thank you for this level of detail and devotion to the music!
Yeah, they crushed their opening set at Kehlani’s concert! They’re really the real deal🙌🏽 also thank you for those words. I really am proud of the research i did here! I’m so glad people are appreciating it as well
Sadly the industry does not appreciate groups like FLO. Kandi Burress also has a girl group who is on the level as FLO.
I need yall to get into Cleo Sol because absolutely no one has mentioned her! She’s everything people want in rnb from the vocals to production to the lyrics. Her music and vocals feel like being wrapped in a comforting hug for a few hours. She just remind of everything warms my heart and cozy. Her album Rose In The Dark is an absolute must and got me through some dark times.
She’s also in the group Sault with rapper Little Simz
LOVE HERR
came here to say this! hoping she puts more music out soon 🤞
i love cleooo
Yes Cleo Sol she's everything!🤎 That's how I feel also about Tems her 2 eps and her born in the wild album be on repeat
I loveeeee Cleo!
the standard now is on the FLOOR, no one SANGSSS anymore it's genuinely upsetting
Yep I thought I was listening to old music because, well I'm old lol. I see so many comments though with younger kids saying they only listen to music from those eras too.
Standards now are under the floorboards and if it's outside, they're buried 80 ft deep
the female version of the r&b talk was so needed because what is going on😭 luv u beautiful
@@nakiyajourney yes! I’m coming through to deliver because as someone who has grown up on and LOVES female r&b, I am so passionate about it
Jazmine Sullivan is that one current Rnb artist that will always have me FEELING her emotions through her music.
I feel like keyshia cole does not get the flowers she deserves, she is who I grew up on as an 06 baby and I feel like she carried for rnb in her time. I feel like she's really underrated too.
I agree with you, I feel like she gets left out of those conversation conversations regarding R&B greats within the 2000s. She has some amazing music.
It’s because she isn’t the strongest singer live.
@@snatched.4513 yeah i agree but that does not take away from the music and the bodies of work she gave us. she’s iconic no matter what.
Keisha Cole’s vocals are no longer strong. Kehlani tried putting her on a song a few years ago and I think took her off? It sounded horrible, she just can’t do that iconic scream-yelling-singing like she did in “Love,” and that used to be my jam back in the day!
@@redluv123 it’s a shame because her earlier performances are some of my favorites, she’s was undoubtedly really good, she has one of my favorite voices, so it’s either she just lost it or she didn’t cater to her voice over the years.
Music used to feel cinematic!!! I knew I wasn’t the only one who felt like we’re not getting the true vocal talents anymore!!
Cinematic is really a great way to describe it especially R&B music
You should listen to amelia moore her vocals are insane and very expressive imo
@@Eze-j3pI will look her up! Thanks
@@CamrynSuzanneit was really an experience from song to song
Mariah the scientist I’m sorry it might be an unpopular opinion but my girl can’t hold 2 sharps and a flat to save her LIFE 😭
You are not wrong😭 i personally can’t with her music because of that
@@luzolo21 SHE CANT PERFORM NOR SING!! 😭 BABY ITS NOT UNPOPULAR ITS THR TRUTH 😅🤣😭
@@takiablack994She actually can, she’s just not a vocalist. She improved herself.
@@SideEyeee_”she improved herself” and that’s part of the problem, these people are pushed to the forefront before having to actually prove themselves. just lightskin and vibes.
@@SideEyeee_I’m sooo sorry, lol but there is no way you think Chloe and Halle are mid singers… while defending the likes of MTS. Actually insane. Lmaooo
Sevyn Streeter deserved a more successful career in music. “It Won’t Stop” is a PERFECT song and should’ve been a number one hit EVERYWHERE! Her albums are really good too but sadly weren’t promoted. She is majorly slept on and it’s kinda sad.
Yeah, I like a lot of sevyn’s songs👌🏽 she also has a song called “before I do” That’s a really nice R&B. I know she also works as a songwriter frequently so she really has that full package for real.
She didn't have a lot of really good songs though. I think she (or her label) should have made better song choices.
"Before I Do" is quite literally flawless.
@@CamrynSuzanneyeah, "Before I Do" is quite literally flawless, from start to finish. Gorgeous song.
This is the perfect time for the R&B girlies to experiment with different sounds and subgenres because the sales on their current albums aren’t good. They have nothing to lose IMO. I want Chloe and Halle to go back and dig deeper into the sound and lane they were carving out for themselves. And I would love for NeoSoul to have a resurgence
I would love it if Neo soul made a comeback
Literally samee
You make an excellent point. It really is the perfect time to try different things because the same old is not selling. so what does anybody have to lose?😅
@@CamrynSuzanne This
This really illustrates what I was mentioning in your Normani video about how completely wrong it was for social media to crown her "the next Beyonce"
Yep ppl thought it was helping her but it just created unrealistic expectations and excessive pressure
Being "THE NEXT BEYONCÈ" takes too much work for these artists today! They just look at the STATUS & ignore THE WORK!
@@TGF25 Bingo! This generation is way too lazy and love instant gratification.
@shanesmith-vn1ri It's not just this generation but the machine that operates this way as well
Every decision they make is based on short term benefit with no real long game in mind and we've been seeing that extremely corporate mindset manifesting in the quality of (mainstream) music for years now
@@shanesmith-vn1ri yes blame it on an entire generation 🙄
Kiana Ledé is a female R&B artist that has the talent but just don’t get enough credit or recognition. She definitely needs 1 hit to push her mainstream 😩
I love Kiana! I saw her in concert about a year ago and she was GREAT
MHMMM! I hate how she gets looked over it’s just crucial to me
Yes!!! Her voice is so silky
Cleo Sol, is a great R&B vocalist and her sound is both a vibe but also it feels timeless.
I feel like there is no romance in r&b anymore its all about sex when really I think they need to mix together rather than try to be all nasty and weird and vocals aren’t giving in r&b and pop anymore where are the vocals i don’t hear them
Yep, the romance is missing. It just feels so straightforward.
💯But it’s unsurprising considering we’re coming out of one of the least culturally romantic times in living memory. When Toni Braxton’s Secrets LP dropped the culture was READY to receive it. It was a more romantic time. We are still a ways from that kind of resurgence but I feel it’s coming. We are not being served by the depressing, nihilistic sentiments in current music. We are human beings not automatons, the numbing of feeling can only go on for so long before the dam bursts.
Being a female R&B singer myself with vocals on the FOREFRONT in 2024 is super hard. I had someone tell me that my vocals are to clear and upfront in the mix for their taste, and that was the reason why they passed on me for playlisting. People are so used to autotuning and mumbling in female R&B... I just wish I was born around Aaliyah's time. I just want to make amazing music.
FLOOOO ❤❤❤
YOU GOT THIS BABE ❤
"Too clear"? Wow. Is this how it is now, crisp vocals are frowned upon? 🤦🏽♂️
@@righteouslioncomedian1069 exactly my reaction. It’s almost like they don’t want singers to be actually singers
You sound really good. I don't understand the "too clear" thing but maybe you were dealing with an experienced singer
.
The blame is always the same: the consumer
This is true. We do hold more power than we give ourselves credit for
@@cuoy13 exactly. But people gas these mediocre people up and accept anything
Love me some FLO! I hope they are here to stay!
Same!! Great great group and great potential
I love your videos because I feel like you understand the nuances of music artistry and music as a sonic experience rather than just a song.
I would add Ari Lennox, Lianne Lahavas, Mahalia and Umi to your list of new school R&B gorls 📌
Thank you soo much 🙏🏽 and yes i love me some ari lennox and I’ve heard of mahalia before but imma listen to some more!
Thank u H.E.R is a well rounded artist she truly a musician
She deserves that respect
She really talented with such beautiful vocals
Listen to her sound journey, omg so beautiful
And you are right i love the vibe and aesthetics of H.E.R it pushed more than the music so mysterious and Artsy with those Round Glasses 👓😎 of hers
Yeah I think HER deserves more credit especially for her being an overall musician. I also did like the marketing of slowly showing her face. It was completely about the music vs the look
@@CamrynSuzanne for real those glasses became her unique look and style
You have been killing it! All these long and thorough videos! With actually new and refreshing topics, not the recycled generic ones. I’m clocking the other channels following your ideas 👀. Keep it up!!
This is such a huge compliment! I really try my best to keep things fresh and don’t know if I’m doing a good job of it, but this is so reassuring🙏🏽
💯
I have been saying this to people for a while! Some of the reason music has lost a lot of the soul and emotion that it once had is that the new generation coming up, hadn’t come up singing in church. We learned musicality, skill and most importantly passion in that space. Once that stopped being a prevalent place, the soul of it began to die
You nailed it right on the head
Yesss foresure, I really think that is a huge huge component
I'm in a feeling of LACK not hearing Kelela's name once during this video but it's ok cuz Camryn you are absolutely killing it with your content lately. You have me chuckling and spitting out one liners with you. This was perfect w my morning tea thank you
Haha thanks for watching!!🩷🩷 I also hadn’t heard of her before but a bunch of people have recommended her so i will be listening
I LOVE Kelela!! You can tell she pours so much heart into her music and her sound actually feels refreshing; she builds such a beautiful emotional landscape. She's with WARP, an independent label, and is best friends with Solange.
Yes !!!!! Black American R&b had influence from West Africa music
That's the birth of Tems
I love her Afro-R&b fusion ❤❤
when chloe and halle stopped making albums together I was so disappointed because i think their sound is unreal. Now, i fully understand them needing to develop as solo artists. when they make another album together, it will be their best work and that makes me excited. when they work together, they complete each other. without each other, they're filling the holes that they used to compliment each other and they just get better in different areas with each release. there's a lot of artist here who make me excited for what's to come
I agree with you wholeheartedly🙌🏽 I think they complement each other so well and also collaborate really well together and it creates this really fresh and unique sound. For example, example, on Chloe’s new album, Trouble In Paradise, and my favorite song was the one with her and Halle. It just had this special magic about it that I feel like was missing with some of her other solo songs.
I listen to Ungodly Hour and be on the verge of tears cause we may not get another one ever again. 😭
They weren’t good to begin with. The bar is in hell.
Chloe and Halle are amazing! The range and harmonies those two come with are not seen in women their age now.
@@MaejorArray i think whether it’s in 1 year or 10 years, they’re inevitably gonna make another album together. even if it’s when they’re 50 idc i need to hear it before i die
I love your content girlie! Samara Joy is an artist yall should check out. While she’s not in the R&B category and more so under the vocal jazz umbrella, SHE’S A VOCALIST and has a lot of R&B, and Gospel influences in her voice. She makes great jazz music. Should totally check her out if you want something a little different. I’m always trying to turn new listeners on to her. She’s a rare jewel in today’s musical climate.
YES I LOVE HER !
Love her!!!
They all have great tones, I just wish they would sing louder. There’s so much of an appeal nowadays for female r&b artists to incorporate more indie/alt into their sound. Stylistically, it’s an interesting and clever choice to use on a slower, ballad-like song, but I just think that nasally/heady doesn’t mesh well with the faster-paced, higher intensity songs. A lot of them play into that freaky quirky sad girl aesthetic, which is fine, but in doing so they tend to lose that soul we know they all have. The low notes will always deliver, but a lot of them have work to do on that chest/mix threshold, stop shying away from those high notes! We can’t hear you when you unequivocally use head and cursive singing on notes that lie comfortably in your middle range.
This! You got it. The tones are great but they seem scared to sing?😭 a lot of them have really nice voices and have it in them to push that out but they choose not to. I want to see some of them really push themselves vocally. Especially considering some of the girls I’be mentioned into today’s r&b have been around for a good while. It’s time to level up!! Love this comment
Tinashe has bended this music world. She’s produced, funded her own projects, boldly explored various genres after persevering through RocNation’s tyranny, and brought various accompanying skills to the table that make her upper echelon in the genre
honestly r&b is in such a dark place right now, it's kinda depressing when you think about how we went from singers like mariah carey to mariah the scientist😭😕.
i LOVED normani's DOPAMINE, 10/10 album but I was disappointed in how there is like no major vocal moment in the album and this girl can WHISTLE omg.
OMG, I agree on the vocals! I wanted her to give more and I felt like she was holding back
I think we kind of got a vocal moment in Tantrums.
@@BellesView yeah from James Blake😂
I agree . Ik she can do better vocally but it was a great debut
For Chloe, I think her music now (especially trouble in paradise) is more authentic to her. It was a big jump from her CxH image but I think that image was more curated for that duo than how she actually is. She has always been the more expressive sister who pushed it with her appearance and her performances. She’s always been more flashy and showy. She just has the freedom to show more of her authenticity and sexuality. (Great video btw)
Yeah, to be honest with you I think Trouble In Paradise is closer to a sound that suits Chloe a lot better. And to be fair, we do have to give artist time to grow and figure out their sound so we definitely have to leave space for that. Also, thank you for watching.🙌🏽
Thank you. This is what I've been saying. People are complaining that she changed or whatever but like she hasn't. This is her personality and what you were seeing was her image as a duo. People saying it's not the real her as if they know her more than she knows herself just because they've only seen her curated image as as part of a duo. I've been saying this but so many people just don't get it. It's so nice to see people say it.
@@Des17SYes! Not to mention her being a child for the majority of that time.

It’s not the 90s/2000s unfortunately but there’s more out there beyond the mainstream

Tinashe is the queen of alternative r&b if u ask me. Starting from her beginning when she dropped mixtapes even her albums now & when she was signed to rca. You hear all her music mixed with the r&b genre, even with hip hop elements. She really masters her sound in a different way. Very dreamy pop-ish but still r&b..its just amazing idk. Thats just my thoughts thoo!! Also a lot of these new girls u can see her influence in. Tate mcrae is one, just the way she performs kinda gives tinashe.
I can get with this! She definitely lives more on that alternative R&B side but like you said she has so much diverse music to where I almost hesitate to put her in that box. She’s really really great. I love Tinashe.

I wouldn't call most of the mainstream rnb girls we have now "Vocalists" . They're just singers in my opinion but not vocalists. Chloe is the one of the only vocalists we have now in mainstream Rnb but I don't think she shows it enough in her music.
Chlöe was sanging on Trouble In Paradise

Yes plz do this!
Definitely should!
Yessss different playlists curated by sub-genre or “vibe/aesthetic” as she mentioned, would be an education in itself.
this is such an informative video & i learned a lot through this video about the history of r&b & how it came to be along w/ the different sub genres & how influencial it is to this day especially in the east where a lot of kpop, k-hiphop, k-r&b, jpop & j-r&b acts are gradually introducing us back into this genre that leads us to discovering & rediscovering a lot of hidden gems or songs & artists that we haven't listened to/heard in a long time :))
I’m glad the video was able to be informative! That’s always the goal because I think it connects a lot of dots. And you’re right R&B for example examples had a lot of influence globally so it’s important we know the history👏🏽
Okay I am going to argue refill by Elle varner because that was my grandma's favorite song. The rawness of it the fullness of the song and just the message. It fully encapsulates being young in the 2010s and wanting to fit in. It's what's lost now we don't have yearning
Elle Varner's first album is love
I just wanna shoutout Amber Riley one time. She's slept on but that voice is incredible.

A 90's singer who I adore but she doesn't get her flowers is Mýa. She came from the golden era of TALENT.
While Mýa has a lighter voice, she is true to the art and has continued to remain relevant since 1998. She knows her instrument. She's true RNB though she had her pop era in the major label system (hell, it got her a Grammy).
From majors to being an independent artist (Grammy nominated), she is THAT girl. Was so happy to see her killing it on the Queen's or RNB tour.
Excited to watch this! I love your content. It's stuff im into and nobody i know wants to talk about. So thank you.
Yay! Thank you so much for tuning in😊😊 so happy I can have these conversations!
I love so many women in the R&B space. The more popular artists like Coco Jones, Ari Lennox, etc are doing their thing, but I'm also really excited for the next generation. Alex Vaughn, Jazlyn Martin, Ayannna and a few others come to mind. Overall, I think there's a little something for everyone in today's R&B landscape. I just think a lot of peopke don't know where to find what they're looking for.
This is my new FAVORITE channel!!! I’ve been sharing it with all of my music lover friends. This is amazing. Thank you for being researched and knowledgeable. Please continue with this content. It’s so necessary.💜🤞🏾✨
Omg thank you 🤩 that is so great to hear! Absolutely loving the conversations we have going on within our lil TH-cam community
R&B Girls that should be in the conversation: Tems, Ravyn Lenae and Joyce Wrice. Overgrown by Joyce is one of my fav albums 🤌🏾✨
I think Ravyn Lenae is definitely one to watch out for. I've been a fan of hers since she first came out and I really think her latest project "Birds Eye" is so pushing R&B forward. She doesn't have the strongest vocals but she has what I would consider to be a very unique voice that's mostly lies in the falsetto tone. She sighted Janet Jackson's Velvet Rope and Brandy to be an inspiration for her work and you can really hear it in the project.
Agreed!
Amber Mark is my favorite female r&b artist right now ❤
She always get left out of the conversation, but she's a talent.
I’ll have go check her out!
It’s honestly been this way for a piping hot minute. That’s why, for me, FLO as a new girl group has been a breath of fresh air these past two years.
I love how this channel is educational for music fans as much as its a place for silliness and discussion. I know a lot of the artists you mentioned but now I have some new recs. You need to make like an educational playlist 😂
I agree that some of the overproduction in RnB can make even talented singers sound boring. And I also agree that singers are either discouraged or maybe just disinterested in doing all the vocal gymnastics I HIGHLY miss.
Also I gasped when you said you didn't like the Chloe album but when you brought up lyricism I had to respectfully put my head down. Bc you're right. One of my fave tracks was Temporarily Single but if I'm being gonest I haven't paid attention to her lyrics on this album at all.
Also for RnB I think I also hang around the neo-soul, pop-rnb, alt-rnb niche for modern artists. I didn't know how to find the "pure" rnb I remembered from the 80's/90's so I'm taking your recs. Mine are: Jenevieve, Kali Uchis (does a variety of styles also sings in spanish), Dreamer Isioma
Aye, I love to hear it👏🏽 that’s the fun part about my channel is I love getting into the history but like we don’t gotta be too serious. I feel like we always have fun over here so I’m so glad you pointed that out.😊 honestly you hit the nail on the head with all of these comments! I know from the opinion it’s quite unpopular because a lot of people really enjoy the album. Vocally she sounded great, I think she’s getting closer to her sound as a solo artist, I just couldn’t get over some of those lyrics😭
Muni long is doing it!! Vocals, lyrics, arrangements, aesthetics and trendiness! 💯
Yeah she definitely has the it factor, I’m really like some of her new music too
I subbed so quick after the intro, I love your talking points ❤❤❤❤

Not the Diddy jumpscare lmaooo
Sorry😭 hated that I even had to mention him though can’t stand that man
😱
Chaka Khan is my favorite singer of all time! Thanks for mentioning her
Yes of course! Genuinely one of the greatest vocalist of all time
What happened to Blu Cantrell? I didn’t know neo soul was spear headed by black females producers. That’s explains why that era was so great!
Can we talk about how simply being melanated while possessing any kind of soulful or melismatic voice would cause a singer to be automatically labelled “R&B”? I grew up thinking I was an R&B-head, just to look back and realise I was enjoying mostly Black Pop stars who were labeled r&b _because_ they were Black in an era where R&B music and Pop music were one and the same. The Billboard R&B chart was literally named the “Hot Black Singles Chart” until 1990. 😅
And it goes both ways, sometimes a white pop singer would make faithful attempts at r&b but would still be labeled “Pop”. Ariana Grande has some records that are faithful to both traditional & contemporary R&B, but because she’s considered a “white pop star”, she’s not really included in R&B conversations, while other white singers like Teena Marie were welcomed with open arms. It’s interesting 🤔
I have genuinely wondered this😳 it’s great you point this out and in a way I feel deserves a deep dive even bc it is interesting how someone like ari is always pop but like you said teena marie was considered r&b. And yeah you hit the nail on the head, a black, soulful singer is almost automatically placed in r&b
@@CamrynSuzanne sometimes i feel it’s more about the branding, marketing & image, than it is about the music bc we all know if a black woman had made the ‘positions’ album it would likely be considered a contemporary R&B album. Not to mention artists like FKA twigs actively pushed back against being labeled R&B. Twigs said that before people had seen her face they couldn’t place her music but once they discovered her black heritage it was automatically pigeonholed in alt-r&b. That’s weird. This whole “pop = white, r&b = black”, thing needs to stop. 🛑
It kinda makes realise how arbitrary genre can be, and I think that’s what Beyonce was trying to say on Cowboy Carter. That album was very much a commentary on genre rather than a faithful attempt at Country.
Excellent video! You are one of my favourite commentary youtubers. Wish you all the success.
With regards to the song writing part of the video, I feel like a serious discussion is needed to correlate the deterioration of song writing especially in America with the literacy and education crisis.
Thank you endlessly!!☺️☺️ and you may just have a point regarding that🤔
What’s hilarious is labels spent so much time and effort trying to push light skin girls as the face of modern r&b just for the two most successful girls rn to be brown skin (SZA and Summer)
I truly wish I had IGNORED this comment. Like everyone else. "Pushing light skin girls" LIKE WHO????? What "lightskins" have they "pushed"? We've barely had ANY R&B. NO R&B artist has been "pushed". The MOST successful R&B acts TODAY are The Weeknd & SZA. Your comment was not only FALSE it was unnecessarily colorist. And for WHAT? 🤔
This is why again.... I MISS the 90's & early 2000's. When TRUE Black Excellence existed in EVERY skintone/representation. None of this dumbazz colorist DIVISION..... that GEN Z brought back to life. It's clearly unhealed scars Gen Z breathing back, because THIS type of comment..... wasn't even a thing growing up, not like it is now (the closest we had were like Brandy & Monica comparisons after "The Boy is Mine" but BOTH got love, equally. And Brandy & Monica were FUN comparisons, even Whitney & Mariah who's half-white were FUN comparisons.... there was no "bitterness" to it. Even with Lil Kim & Foxy Brown.... it was NEVER based on skin-tone, just pure beef & raps. That's just 3 examples. Everyone had someone to admire or look up to. THAT'S how we grew up. I miss that ). And I find it VERY odd & disappointing. How things have turned out in our community over the years. (and that's beside how we're treated IN the industry itself, which is racist enough). But congrats again, on your new "likes".
The "industry" holds back black woman.... in GENERAL. Esp these days. They held back BOTH Normani AND Tinashe. Equally. That's why Tinashe had to go independent & Normani now facing the same situation. So again cut the colorist bullsht
@@stopthenonsense123no one bullied that girl for being lightskin. She was just corny back in the day. She is very talented but whitewashed and tried to give “down chick” in her music so people clocked.
@@stopthenonsense123 nobody bullied tinashe for being light skin wut
@@Krissy-u8d Uhh. YEAH. They did. Been following these artists on social media for MANY years. Plus I'm a Tinashe fan. And my memory near spotless. Idk why yall lying NOW, yall were probably the ones doing it. 🤣
There's this R&B artist from the UK named Tyler Lewis her debut EP is really good. She was also on Little mix's show The Search.
Chloe is a perfect example. I love her voice but I need the instrumentals to match her vocals.
Great video!!! I love your attention to detail and how passionate you are when it comes to explaining different topics in your videos. Keep up the good work!!!.
Btw, when it comes to 90s R&B, you forgot to mention En Vogue and Salt 'N' Pepa, who were very huge at the time and even both groups collaborated for the song Whatta Man. In addition to that, Vanessa Williams had some R&B hits that helped her have some success in that genre during the 90s.
Also, I think that the best R&B era is definitely the 90s and 2000s because there was a lot of diversity of genres that were associated with R&B such as Hip Hop, Soul, Jazz, New Jack Swing, Gospel, Alternative R&B, Neo Soul, Quiet Storm and so on, which added to the variety of extremely talented artists that we come to love such as Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Aaliyah, Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston, Brandy, among others.
I appreciate that! Thank you!🩷 and also thank you for adding some of these names. There were so many to be listed and i either forgot or also didn’t want to be to winded with names.
I saw that you were excited about reaching 70k subscribers and thought this was an old video! Your stuff gives million plus subscribers materials! Congrats on 70k!
Ahh thank you!! Just working my way up the ladder and continue to make quality videos and everything will fall into place in due time🙏🏽
THIS IS SO GOOD. ++
Deborah Cox
Amerie
En Vogue
Dawn + Aundrea of Danity Kane
Keisha Buchanan (Sugababes)
Melody Thornton (PCD)
Ally + Dinah (Fifth Harmony)
Tamia
Shanice
Jennifer Holliday
Yes, thank you for adding some of these names! I can’t believe I forgot some of them😭 especially because I love me some Tamia
YUPPPPPPP BIG ON DINAHHHH you know whats up
Once again, you have knocked it out of the park, I love these last two videos and how you go in depth about the history of R&B. Mic the Snare has a few videos about The Music That Define The Decades series. I love would a video like that from you but about R&B from the 90s, 00s and 10s. I can see you pulling that off
Yebba out here being great too!! Her vocals are wild!!!!
Yes! She has a really nice essence about her music🙌🏽
Yes ma'am
Nothing will ever top 90s R&B!!!!Love SZA tho.
Agree agreed agreed!!
I just want to thank you for mentioning Brenda Holloway, her catalog is great.
A stunning singer! And she’s hardly mentioned in these discussions. I’m glad I could
This was so fire! You went in such depth i didn’t expect wow! 🔥🔥🔥 you really appreciate the craft and pay attention to more than the surface level stuff. Sheesh! But yessss u hit it on the head all the way down to everyone trying to be aliyah . The labels HAVE to get back to doing actual development. But that only comes when we get our money back right. Physical products make it so you can pay for development, live instruments, better writing, vocal producers etc
thank you🙏🏽 I really decided to do a deep dive today and I’m so happy I did because of the context it added! There are so many music lovers out there that genuinely care about the Craft and I’m really glad that it portrayed here.
@@CamrynSuzanne yes!! Bravo! 👏🏽 you are appreciated for sure 🔥🔥🔥
I absolutely loved this video. Very educational and a lot of insight on my favorite gerne!
Thank you!! I’m really glad I leaned into the history. It is so important to
The thing with Aaliyah though, is that while vibe and image were art driven and strong and she favoured a feather light delivery on many of her songs, she had great technique, a range of vocal tones/registers and could actually blow when the song called for it.
Unfortunately, the majority of girls who credit her as a major influence can barely sing. You could listen to an Aaliyah song and feel satisfied vocally, whereas I can’t name one Aaliyah influenced artist who has a voice I would want to listen to Acapella.
Camryn our queen of music dropped a new long-form vid😭😭 this was in depth and a much needed follow-up to the male R&B video. I'm gonna echo the people suggesting you check out Kelela's music, but ALSO falsetto queen Kirby, neo soul duo GAWD, and indie vocal powerhouse Nelccia
Let’s hear it for Detroit! ❤ Awesome job on the editing, research and presentation! Btw, I agree with your mom. Sometimes I can’t name that voice with some of the new ladies.
Detroit🎉🎉🎉
Laila is a new rnb artist that seems very promising. Her album Gap Year was so good.
Yes! Her latest song "not my problem" is so nostalgic to me 😭
Could Be,Talent Show, R U Down, n Flyer than u
I love Laila’s tone, lyrics, and overall freshness.
One of my favourite videos from you so far! Thank you for your informative video and for shedding light on some queens I never heard of. I never realised I was so influenced by it, that “mellow” sound I thought was just my taste but that’s really all we can receive from the rnb women these days. I love that we can all agree on the same women or group of women who are bringing tastes of the old days that aren’t as watered down.
Love this and you so much Cameryn🎉🎉
Thank you so much for watching!❤️ this is probably one of my favs too because of all the conversations we are having in the comments
One of the best RnB singers from the 90s that I feel is still criminally underrated is Chanté Moore. She has the vocals, the stage presence, and the looks (and is still a great performer to this day) and has a solid discography.
JoJo has also consistently stayed as one of the best vocalists in RnB since her literal childhood and just keeps getting better and better (same as Tori Kelly). I'd recommending giving her 2021 EP "Trying not to think about it' a listen!
I realize you can't possibly mention everyone in the video, so I thought I'd give them a mention in here 🫀
@@saadmars961 suggest listen to the Ivory Queen of Soul, R&B ~ Lady Teena Marie. Add her to your list .
To add some names of female R&B Cleo Sol I was introduce to her last year and loved her project. Ravyn Lenae and my controversial pick Doechii, I know must see her more as a rapper but she also sings on her project.
I loved that JoJo was included on this :,)
Love me someee Jojo✨
Ravyn Lenae, Amber Mark, Jade Novah, Sinead Harnett, Joyce Wrice, Kirby, and Swsh are some of my favs right now 😊
Ohhh i’ve been WAITING for this one
Hoping you like it! I’ve been excited to do this one for a while
1 new R&B girlie I adore is Joyce Wrice.
Yess, can’t believe I forgot to mention her👏🏽 she has some good music
Thank you for another excellent video. I think I will watch it again right away. One contemporary vocalist that wasn't mentioned here (I think) is Tiana Major9. Her voice is truly angelic, I love her and wait for an album.
I’m not even done, about 10 min in. And the amount of history, and preparation, and respect for the genre. Phew! As a musician currently working on branding, crafting my sound, and the direction I want to take my music, this is like a master class, and such beautiful confirmation that I’m headed in the right direction. The history speaks for itself. Bravo on all the hard work you put in to these videos. Only my second video and already a subscriber. Thank you for putting us on game! ❤
My Favorite new school R&B
Ari Lennox
Ella Mai
Queen Naija
Tori Kelly
Kiana Lede
Normani
Coco Jones!!!
I’ve been listening to India Aire a lot lately I really miss hearing positive uplifting music…
Girl you literally listen to all my favorite old school artists especially the 70s and 80s female Queens
Regina Belle has such a phenomenal voice her song Show Me The Way & Baby Come To Me is everything to me!!!
Great list! Kiana is one of my favs on there and I wish I would’ve emphasized how much I really like her music out of the new class of R&B artists. Also, I’m so glad I could list some of those old-school artists because it’s so important that they get their acknowledgment and flowers when we talk about the R&B conversation.🙌🏽
We definitely need more positive uplifting music in the mainstream today.
As someone who sings backup and leads in my small church choir, I looooooveee listening to songs with complex vocals, even if I can’t reach them as an audience, it’s so mesmerising and truly shocking the lengths that the human voice can go. And it’s pretty fun to try and reach it(though I’ll probably need years of training to ever come a smidge close to Minnie rippertons whistle)
I would recommend Tanerelle. She is a indie artist. But her sound is rnb soul/neo soul. U should listen to her music.
I loveeeee her. Her music is so beautiful
@@niyaakbar1098 yeah. I think she represents the deeper tones of the rnb sound. I love her deep voice.
Yes she’s great even tho she’s great at other genres too
Oh okay bet!!!
Camryn you made my soul smile when you mentioned Jhene starting a wave with Sailing souls, everyone seems to forget her when we talk about who originated Alt rnb, and usually only mention The Weeknd or Frank
Yep, she is a pioneer there!!
I also like to give love to some of the girls across the pond as well. There are some very talented R&B girlies in the UK and it made me so happy that you mentioned Flo, Jorja Smith, Ella Mai, and Hope Tala! I also recommend Mnelia, Tyler Lewis, Jaz Karis, Bellah, Raye, Mahalia, Tiana Major9, Cleo Sol, NAO, and Sinead Harnett. These girls make some quality good music! Check them out!
I hope to be one of the artists on your next female R&B video. It does take a little while when you aren't willing to go the major label route ( been there done that), but We are out here and the vocal girlies will be back. We are building teams and figuring it all out. Thank you so much for your wonderful perspective on music. You are definitely a student of the game!
Is it illegal to enunciate , bruhh you just made me scream 💀💀💀
😂😂

She back at it with another 🔥 video!
Thank you for watching!
