    Alright, in this experiment I tried using a new narrative theory, and a new structure where I try to tell a story first as opposed to purely analyse, as a result, this was an incredibly convulated project to write, so I can only hope it makes sense. This video was also supposed to come out 2 weeks ago, but then I needed to get my Saving Private Ryans video finished first and then I realised I should get the One X-Cellent finally done too so it can come out close to this. But regardless, this next essay is on Miles Morales.

      It definitely made sense. It was a fun one to follow along with, and really made me think about the character in a way I had never considered (especially with his reversed role in Dark Phoenix as the one most driven by fear, and how that ending contrasts so sharply with that of Logan).

      James McAvoy and Patrick Stewart's scene where they play off each other is the greatest, because I believe it shows off Xaviers greatest gift and his curse, which is not his telepathy, but his empathy.

  • @ajaylouw6604
    @ajaylouw6604 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    His tragedy is writers who either see him as boring and try to spice him up in the bad ways, writers that outright hate and don't like him and just bad writing overall

  • @Phantom9252
    @Phantom9252 3 ปีที่แล้ว +95

    Comics Xavier is exactly like this as well. In the 60's he just started out as the idealistic mentor figure with a dream but as the comics went on writers pushed Xavier into deeper and deeper acts of moral ambiguity, even crossing the line a couple times. Professor X is supposed to be the moral heart of the X-Men but how can he be when he himself keeps compromising his own morals?

    Well, things didn't get QUITE as bad as they did for Charles, and Cyclops, in many of the recent comics, and in Ultimate X-Men, etc, thankfully.
    Still, Dark Phoenix darkens the character a fair bit, and Logan was a pretty overly bleak ending, after the triumphant (and almost climatic) end of Days of Future Past.
    And of course, Dark Phoenix could not REALLY have been done in a single film, to begin with.

    • @kittycatts5632
      @kittycatts5632 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cramping it into one film wasn't the plan in the beginning, they planned two films, you can look it up

  • @MrDangerdood

    Loved the essay dude; it really got me thinking:
    This is cathartic af seeing as how in the comics right now Xavier is living his dream, and it is sort of problematic, as upsetting as it is Charles is better off outliving his political pursuits than he is in succeeding at peace, while alive, because his prerogative lies within the fight, and his humanity lies in his position as a leader of change. The endings he gets in the films may seem bleak, but are the only way his dream lives and Xavier doesn’t lose what makes him/his vision good. Therefore, while tragic it could be argued that both endings are bitter sweet, Logan especially when taking in to account the kids, and how Charles’s demise can be viewed as a form of martyrdom for the dream.

    Speaking of timelines, based on Marvel's UNIVERSE classification system on the Marvel Database, the original X-Men Timeline is Earth-10005. The Days Of Future Past Timeline is Earth-TRN414, TRN stands for Temporary Reality Number which is what all new timelines get, when a new Universe is shown in the form of a new Movie, TV Series, Video Game, Motion Comic, or Comic. Then eventually they get a new OFFICIAL number at San Diego Comic Con in the following years. But, LOGAN is Marvel Earth-17315. Completely different to TRN414 which is the Days Of Future Past Timeline Future. So LOGAN is an alternate future, and still so incredibly sad and perfect, and Dark Phoenix is a mutually exclusive ending, compared to LOGAN.

    love love love this video. xmen movie analysis on youtube is far + few between (especially when it comes to charles) so this was so great to find.
    i think charles in dark phoenix is the most echo of comics charles + his ~dark side~ while xmfc-dp charles is simultaneously an example of what comics charles could've been with intervention before he became set in his trauma + privilege-induced ways. the idea of the knowledge of hopeless futures hardening charles is also extremely relevant to his comics self in conversation with the house of x/powers of x comics reboot (idk if youre a Comics Enjoyer but! yeah there's a lot of retcon madness going on with that)

  • @moltamio

    As I understand it, the reason Logan takes place in the new timeline but can reference and acknowledge the old one is because when Logan wakes up in the new timeline at the end of Days of Future Past, he still has the memories of the old timeline and therefor Charles can read his mind to know Logan's past. At least that's my head canon of it all.

    • @briansilva3344
      @briansilva3344 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I personally believe most of the new timeline is on a similar path as the original trilogy, but there were some changes in order to keep the DOFP good ending in tact. No X3/X2, but there was a similar journey in X1, since Rogue still has a white streak in her hair and is still dating Iceman like in the trilogy.

      makes sense since a different teams were working on those 2 films. Also the franchise did not have a goal to make building blocks for. Each of the rebooted series were mostly self-contained stories that couldn't change too much to affect their previous films continuity. Logan focused at the very end of the timeline to tell a closing story, while the new movies were set to continue as long as they could (before Disney put in the deal to buy Fox). Apparently, Fox were in development of a franchise plan starting with Dark Pheonix, but that never came to fruition.

    i have a theory there are 3 completely independent universes and stories being told and the actors are just playing multiple versions of themselves.
    U1: Xmen 1-3
    U2: Origins/Wolverine/Logan
    U3: FC/DOFP/A/DF
    i separated u1 and u2 because i think Logan both fits better as a conclusion to the previous to solo films, but also Logan went out of its way to distance itself from the events of U1.
    U3’s time travel also takes place within itself although again several similar things to U1 may occur, and the actors reprise their roles(mostly).
    obviously this isnt really likely but if you treat each series as independent, much less plot holes and annoyances appear

    They're alternate universe characters that were put into the same timeline. They don't really have the same character or behavior. Stewart wouldnt have acted like McAvoy when he was a young man and McAvoy Xavior wouldnt have acted like stewart when hes older. That's like saying theres a character ark between Aaron taylor Johnson and evan Peters just because their timelines have come together

    With Logan Xavier mentioning pre-soft boot events. He is well aware that the logan he is talking to is not the Logan Jean released in Apocalypse. He also read Longan's mind/history so he's well aware of Logan's story from the original timeline.

      A man chasing a dream became a prisoner of its impossibility. Inevitably captivated people believing in that dream. The positive imagination of this dreamer has the possibility the tide. In the end he outlines his dream or his dream outlives him. As the life of a dreamer can be impossibility bleak. That is what I got from that.
