Hi Lindsey, My name is Somong, and I'm a music producer and DIYer. I've watched hours of floating shelf videos before finding yours. Although I'm more knowledgeable, I wish I found your video first. Thank you!
I used pine I had laying around that I made into 5 3/16" x 5/8" for the top and bottom of the box. I cut it into 4 pieces at 24 3/4". The sides were 4"x 5/8" with one piece cut at 26" and two pieces cut at 10 3/8" Then I used 3" spacers to help assemble my box. I laid out the top and two side pieces. I applied wood glue to the ends and then clamped it together. I put four air nails in each end.
Awesome, make sure you subscribe so you don't miss out on any new projects. In our most recent video we build two table top fire pits @ th-cam.com/video/KtELTRTK7Ag/w-d-xo.html
Love the tutorial and the outcome! Only question - where do you buy boards that are 5/8" thick? Assuming it wasn't plywood, because then you wouldn't have needed 2 per surface for the top and bottom. (Haven't seen lumber dimensions at Home Depot that matches what you use for the box.)
Nice vid! The only problem is when the wall isn't plumb or level it moves the inside frame causing the batons to either angle in or out. Also, most folks want shelves in alcove spacing so this is also more problematic (building the int frames beforehand). The way I do it is to build the frame and mount it first - then take the measurement for the outside OR clad it in 9mm MDF top, base and front. Get them glasses on ye!
All depends on having wooden studs! America is built on 2x4s... A lot of the stuff here in Europe is metal frame, which is really thin, which means you've only got the plasterboard itself (sheet-rock) to hold up the shelf. Hmmmn. Ideas?
@@TimberTea It depends what thickness of sheetrock they have fitted to it. My neighbours put up a wall between my part of the loft and theirs, and it was only ten mill stuff, and the whole wall shivered if you tapped it. It's very quick. You have verticals that you fix top and bottom and the sheet-rock slots into them. You cover the join with filler as normal. Usually, the thin steel frame is fixed to stone or blockword behind it as well, but the neighbours (lazy buggers) had just screwed it to the beams at the top and the floor at the bottom, and there it wavered like a curtain. What I did was to buy heavy sheet-rock and stuck it directly to theirs with a marvelous thing they have here in France called MAP, which is a mixture of plaster and glue. You can do anything with it, including sticking in this case the sheetrock to the floor, wall and ceiling. The resulting wall was solid enough to hang bookcases on it, (though I can still hear the buggers moving about)...
Having looked at about 15 vides on floating shelves, I found one using metal braces that I thought was the one. Nah! I want to cut to size my pieces and join them together like you did. Thanks for the inspiration -- and the confidence that I can do it.
Awesome job. But after i made several floating shelves. Those shelves felt so Huge. We can save the space with thin board with an anchor of Nuts and Bolt or Iron piece inside the board. So it can hold much more weight on it. Just share what i did.
It’s so pretty but I’m not as handy I would be scared to do this alone 😬... but I’m probably going to find me someone handy to build me this beautiful shelving. Thank you for this video 1:43
Great shelves. Used this video to show my wife how we can build them to hold her rocks. Appreciate everything.
This is probably the least expensive and yet durable diy floating shelves tutorial I have seen yet! Thanks for the video! 5:23
thanks for watching! glad you like it! :):)
Hi Lindsey,
My name is Somong, and I'm a music producer and DIYer.
I've watched hours of floating shelf videos before finding yours.

Awesome Dana !! I love to hear from people who actually used my video to build a floating shelf project of their own!
What was the measurements you used I’m tryna build a floating bar table with this method
Nice looking shelves.
Good advice
Nice shelves. Like the distressing technique. If you miter the corners (dope Bosch saw), this looks like a solid slab or beam.
Made one and it turned out great! Plus the insides make a great stash spot! 😜
haha amazing idea!!😋😋
That was my first thought, hidden safe!☺️
Like the finishing touch by sanding the edges.
This is exactly what I want to make for my kitchen. Thank you.
Quic and simple video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
No endless BS like done other videos

Hi, nice video. What size lumber did you use to build the boxes? I know about the 2 x 3's you used but what about the other lumber. Thanks.

Humm I've never worked with steel studs before how does a drywall anchor work ?
