Lived, worked and studied in London; got 2 masters and a PhD..had great job but yet i was unable to buy a house as a single lady..so, over 10 years ago I left my rented apartment and well paid job in London UK and moved to central Italy...i drefted from farm into another learning skills on how to grow food organically, keep animals, etc using my dwindling saving untill 6 years ago when i managed to buy a very small old stone house ...now i live off grid, not even solar panels, just candlea i make, no car, no electricity, no bills, grow my food, keep chickens to sell eggs and goats for milk..no job, no money but i eat better than a queen and I'm the happiest and healthiest I've ever been. I've learnt alot from preserving my food mainly through fermenting or dehydrating, to animal husbandry using holistic methods, to grow organic food, to making soaps, candles, medicinal oils, ointments, etc.. If I, a single lady, can do it, anyone can..yes i miss the UK, it's my only home but i can't afford to have even a metre of land to live my dream.. maybe one day. Sorry for any spelling mistakes,cetc, as i use this old mobile phone with a limited access to internet..maybe when i can afford a new one i can start a TH-cam channel to share my experience and knowledge. I have just turned 60 my husband retired last year. At around the same time he was diagnosed with MS . He is now in a wheelchair. All the plans we had are now gone. We've no children and no family nearby. I feel very trapped , and with the country as it is i have very little hope for the future. My point is , to anyone and everyone... don't put things off, if you can do something today do it. Take the leap. Take the risk. You never know what life will throw at you. Life is very short.
the MS diagnosis seems linked to his retirement... feeling loss of purpose... control etc.. why do you think there's never a root for autoimmune disorders... because they're emotional/mental... wish you all the best and hope he recovers if he's brave enough to go into the root of it :)
i hope you are ok and can find friends, or neighbors...some people you can connect to. i am 51 and my sister is a year younger. my parents are in their 80s. i don't really have friends as i am quite the homebody. we've no husband or kids...one day we will be alone. i can't think about it too much or it will be too depressing. But more and more i think i should retire soon, to take care of my parents and do more around the house. Just want to thank you for your comment

i lived in Hong Kong for 3 years. i am chinese born in the uk. Yes Asia seems easy, I was doing well for my job, doing a part time masters degree in the uni of hong kong, but i missed my sister and family in the UK. I missed the countryside and greenery. i know i could be successful in HK, but I came back to the uk. i know work as a contractor in central government. i am lucky i paid off my mortgage with sister, i have now rented out my whole house and live with my 80 year old parents. Working from home and taking care of my parents, i love my simple life. i really hope your youtube channel gives you a lot of success

I’ve only recently found your channel. Your content has helped my mindset a lot in a very short space of time I live in rural north Wales. It’s a relatively poor area that relies on the tourist industry. Wages and job opportunities and pretty minimal around here. I’m 49 and live on my own. Happily may I add! I have a decent career, but I find that I can generally just pay my bills and mortgage with my wages. I try to save, but that money usually goes when I have issues with my house or car. It’s a pretty dire situation at times. I feel like I’m just working to pay bills. But you’re content has given me a shift in mindset by making me appreciate the little joys of life. I live in a beautiful area surrounded by nature. I’ve also known what it’s like to be out of work and have sleepless nights about where my money is going to come from. So I’ve shifted my mindset to be a lot more appreciative of what I have. I have a job that I like, a roof over my head and I enjoy living in a beautiful area. I definitely think that social media has skewed my perspective about life. All is see is people post their highlight reels. Their new cars, their nice holidays etc. Constantly exposing myself to this just makes me feel that my life is lacking and that I don’t have a nice life. But it’s all about a change of perspective. Some people do get the rub of the green financially. Whereas others probably have to work hard at very stressful jobs to buy these nice things. I might not be able to get the nice house or car. But is it really worth the stress if I have to sacrifice things like my relaxing walks in nature or just chilling at home with a cup of coffee. Thank you for your content. You have genuinely helped knock me out of a spiral of self pity and feeling that my life isn’t as good as people who have the financial freedom to do more. But you can have a nice life with the most basic lifestyle with the correct mindset.

I have a 1995 Audi estate and live in expanded ulez zone lmao £12.50 a day to drive my car out of the car park and £37.50 a day if I go into central London. It's a fucking joke. Not to mention taxes. Taxes on capital gains have fucked me. I cant sell a certain digital coin that I have held for nearly 10 years because I would have to pay the government too much and they took none of the risk.. I don't even have to work a 9-5 because I got lucky on investments in 2021 and bought a flat and even I'm still getting shafted. Can't imagine what it would be like to still have to rent in London. Last time I rented a one bed flat in 2019 it was £900, now I am sure it would be closer to £2k. It's all planned 'YOU WILL OWN NOTHING AND YOU WILL BE HAPPY'

You're correct that it's planned. An impoverished population is easier to control. Otherwise it's a major coincidence that all anglosphere countries are experiencing a housing crisis at the same time due to hardly any new home-building and extortionate rents and mortgage terms. There is clearly a concerted plan being implemented across a number of western countries to impoverish the masses.

You made the right choice. It's also about connecting with who you really are and what you truly value in life. I used to live in the US, also making lots of money, but decided I was European and moved back to Europe. Life is harder in the EU for me, but I feel like I'm home and not in a foreign country.

Walking in nature past old stone buildings is something I love too. Being around others with shared values, culture, and language means a lot. I'm watching you from Montréal, Canada where French is the official language. However, my french language skills are severely lacking despite the last seven years of daily practice and two years of french language school. The main challenge is that I'm very introverted, so I avoid too much interaction with others - self-defeating. It's exhausting learning another language in your 60's. It had always been a dream of mine to live in France, but I didn't manage to make that dream come to life. Your videos are comforting and inspiring. Thank you.
Nice to hear some normal and thoughtful takes on living in the UK. My TH-cam feed is often filled with negative videos, people ranting and raving about failed Britain. This was a breath of fresh air. I'm on the same page as you with the walking - I live down South near Bath and the access to nature is one of my favourite things about the area, coupled with easy access to the city.

I love your positive/thankful/realistic outlook. Your unique life experiences and insights are refreshing. I agree that the cost-of-living is pinching most people these days. I'm in the USA, though, so I am feeling optimistic that these might improve over the next few years. I certainly hope so, for our daughter's sake. She'll hopefully graduate from university in 2.5 years. As a 50-something married woman, life is pretty good. My main stressor lately has been our neighbor's pitbulls and lack of fence/containment. I grew up in a more rural area and was chased by dogs on our way home from school and it's bringing back unpleasant memories and I don't want our daughter to live in fear of going outside, either. I hope and pray that this will only be a temporary situation and it's motivating me to get our finances in order and save money in case we have to move. It's just sad because we've lived in our home for over 26 years and one neighbor's selfishness is ruining our once peaceful neighborhood. The area in which you are walking looks so peaceful. I hope your situation improves and you are able to relish the little joys in life each day.
24, scotland. yeah, rents are insane, id be spending around 65% of my full time salary on rent alone if i moved out of my family's place, and close enough to work to cut out the bus cost. council tax and bills on top of that would leave me very little to actually use to build savings for my future. i feel powerless, or immature, becuse the adult milestone of moving into your own place feels unatainable for me right now

Why stay? We stay because its our home...we've been here for 10,000 years. When things aren't great, we stay and fix them back up. When things are good, we share our success with the world.

Im in the UK and for the last 4 years I have been rent free in my hometown in return for some minor security dervices. I was very lucky to have this arrangement but unfortunately I was not earning very much during this time so was not able to save anything. I decided to end this arrangement and get out of my hometown because the convenience of living there has kept me there too long and i want to experience the rest of the country. Im currently on state benefits and sofa surfing around the country trying to pick up work where I can but this isnt yielding too many results. I dont think I will ever be able to afford a normal lifestyle here so Im having to look into other options. I have friends who are looking at buying some land for some community focused projects and I think I might have to build myself a wooden shack there so i can live in a low cost way and save money while working in the local town. It will be interesting to see how things develop in the UK because something has to change at some point for better or for worse.

In America they say if your rent is more than 40% of your earnings it’s not good, when in the uk let’s be honest rent is normally 90% of your wages if not more.
Jeez I rent a caravan and it's 800 a month plus 90 for a gas bottle each month now going to charge for electric so another 40 , 50 a month plus 200 a month for fuel for car food is about 2 to 300 , gym membership is 35 that's almost 1600 , oh plus 300 child maintenance that's almost 2k , I take home 2100 so that leaves me with a whopping 100 pound a month to do hobbys and go out to do things !! To invest etc , and that's just renting a caravan. If I was to rent it would be much more ! The UK is fooked and impossible to live.

I am a retired teacher, and having several weeks off in the summer during my working years I had the opportunity to travel to The UK and European mainland seven times in the from the early 80s up to seven years ago (Iceland Christmas trip). Loved every country I have travelled to, especially the nature in Ireland, England and Wales. My paternal ancestry is English and maternal Irish, so had lots of deja vu moments. Also I appreciate your gratitude for having a good quality education in The UK which taught you critical thinking, open mindedness and a love for life long learning. Liked and subscribed.
I lived in the UK for 20+ years. I went the other way and moved to Russia. It was very easy for me as my wife is Russian. Luckily we did this before the sanctions, so we could still transfer our money over there. We bought a patch of land near the Black Sea and built a hotel. We're now financially secure and no longer have to worry about the future of our 7 year old son. I guess we're now considered "wealthy" (even by western standards). This is the first time in my life I've felt comfortable, and it's a great feeling! If you're broke, you're not "free" (I don't care what anybody says about "freedom", I've learnt this from first hand experience). For the first time in our lives, we actually own things now (instead of owning debt, like a mortgage or car payments). I'm temporarily back in the UK right now, and I can't believe how bad it is. We still travel back to the US at least once a year to see my family and friends, and it's getting grim there too. I'd love to be able to help out my family (especially my brother and sister) financially, but it's not that easy getting money out of Russia now. We can take a certain amount out in cash per person, but we get grilled at the US or UK border every time we do - because we take out the legal limit per person, including our son. I have one friend back in New York state who's a lawyer, but drives an taxi at night!!! While my wife and I (and our son) are fine, what's happening economically still impacts us, especially when we hear/see how it affects our loved ones abroad. I'd love to believe that things will get better, but I just can't see it (yet).

When you live somewhere which is not your home of origin, you still struggle. We have tried for 20 years and finally decided to try to live back home. It was the best decision we' ve made. Financially, family- wise, friends- wise, housing, food, travelling - after a very long period of time we could relax and start enjoying life
I think we are all different. Although Brits our hearts lie with France as that is our way of life with so many genuine friends, unlike people in the UK.

I have started a few youtube channels myself. Because of work I haven't focused on my hobbies much. But i intend to do more of what i love. I also started growing my own food during lockdown. we turned our back yard into a veg patch. it's very rough and ready but it gives me and mum so much enjoyment. we made it from free pallet wood we collect.
Was offered a job in the UK. Problem was, I had to apply for the Visa (normal) but the costs of getting that Visa and delays with zero guarantees that if I took the job offer, my Visa would be ready. I had to have at least 50K in savings (had to prove this to the Home Office, didnt even have half of that). I had to prove I would have an additional 10K to cover any emergency healthcare costs. I was hit with an additional 8K in fees, taxes, processing costs. I had to find my own housing (average cost was going to be 1200 BNP) BEFORE I arrived. The job itself was a pay cut from what I was getting in the USA (about 20%) less and the position was only for a year and could be renewed or cancelled at anytime. Even having direct relatives in the UK (Uncle / Aunts / Cousins) didnt help. I had to decline the offer, and glad I did....four months later, the company folded. I would have been in a dire situation if I had proceeded.
Thanks for this. It seems an honest and interesting take on how the U.K. is at the moment. I’m moving back to the from Thailand in a few months after 16 years away. I’m returning at 44 after a messy Divorce with my 16 year old son and very little savings. I know it’s gonna be rough to begin with but the walks, nature and culture will make it worth it I’m sure! I won’t be turning on the tv or listening to the radio as I believe they are just making people miserable atm.
After 24 living in the UK, I want to come back to Italy but my daughter is only 17 years old. Her education here in the uk is important. I am struggling mentally and fisically . 57 with osteoporosis, food quality is just for the rich if you find it. Massive propaganda of junkies food and beverages disgraceful. Teenagers used to smoke, and now they vape! Terrible, I am horrified to see the decline and government are useless. It doesn't care about the British. Never mind healtcare. I know I am lucky I can fly to Italy for that. I am patient for a few years until my daughter is independent, and I can return to Italy. England is a beautiful country, and I love it so much. Egglestone Abbey is a place I live near and visit regularly. I love the UK but am scared that now an anti British government is ruining everything g we hold dear it will be broken beyond repair. We need people in charge who share our love for the country as it was as we grew up. I’m not racist at all but Britain is a white country with western values. If a government does everything to fight this belief it’s going to wreck the UK. Possibly the solution is to become racist as the government and incomers are. Locals in China have an easier life than in the UK BY FAR. If this guyhas only been in a megacity maybe he thinks the rest of China is the same, which is not. In China you can go to smaller cities and someone working in a supermarket earns 500 pounds a month but housing , transport and food is extremely cheap, that is why 90% of chinese people own their homes. The problem in the west is that not only big cities are expensive, everywhere is very expensive, and safety is a real problem in the UK

Virilit. I am English by birth and by family history since the beginning of time! I saw the writing on the wall there from a very early age. I was not comfortable there during the 70’s/80’s. I finally left in 1999. I miss some elements (it is my home after all) but now I feel I have probably bought the one way ticket? There was a tentative plan to return to grow old and die but with what I see there now that would be crazy. I have a home I could not dream of in UK. I have all I want. I pay minimal tax and the cost of living is way less than UK. Yet I am in a 1st world country still. I did chuckle when you said free speech is not under threat there. To me it has already been removed. So in conclusion, I miss the UK for sure. The UK of yesteryear. The UK that I was unhappy growing up in! How would I cope with it in 2025? I believe the locals’ struggles in China is not proportional to the struggles of the same demographic in the western world. Rent and grocery is more affordable in China. Car and public transportation is cheaper. No/low personal income tax depending your salary. Efficient universal health care. Excellent education. And no property tax! People in China, even for those who are struggling can still afford hobbies and eating out with friends and family. So it is not unethical at all for you as an expat to earn your living in China. You have something to offer and your service is valued. A teacher in China is a very noble profession and highly regarded by Chinese culture. An English friend of mine recently closed a highly lucrative deal in China. And it is very interesting that the final decision was not based on his 30 years in top global management experience but the fact that he is a teacher. My friend is a part time teacher at Birkbeck. Even he is planning to move to Asia because it makes more sense. So go for it! We all deserve to live a happy and joyful life.

The easy days in Britain ended in the late 1980's when house prices became unmanageable. You would be surprised that even in 1989 it was difficult to get a small house anywhere near London as a single person even with a 'good' job. If you failed to get on the property ladder your fate was sealed i.e. you would never be on the ladder. If you had a council house and 'right to buy' you were very lucky but this was difficult in the south and in any case, it was charity. Now it is harder than ever. I hope the country you love (Britain) will give you something in return as your dedication deserves.

It’s very tough especially when you have kids as the system is set up to bring you down. I also worked in China as a teacher where I met my wife and were able to buy a place in the UK and then started flipping houses and now very fortunately by a combination of luck and thinking creatively own our house outright. We don’t have kids which would have made it very difficult or impossible. China is great if your a foreigner and earn money as a teacher or you can earn money online and live here, but us tough for the locals. Your point about ethical is all good and well and it’s down to if you want to make your life suffer or not. We are not on this planet for long and I am like everyone else who wasn’t born with a silver spoon, but I won’t accept my fate and will always find a solution to make mine and my wife’s life easier.

Now i've watched the whole video i'll wish you luck again! You asked, so our future plans are in China eventually, but like you my mum is here, and I have a business here with clients etc, so we have to stay for now. I would go to China more often but 3 years ago we got a dog and I can't bear the thought of leaving him in a kennel, so i'm stuck for the time being. We are looking for someone to care for him properly so we can go visit family in Shanghai and in Yunnan we have some friends we are dying to see. Eventually though, i'll try my best to get to China. I do worry about the situation in this country, you alluded to it, it's going the wrong way at the minute. Depsite what everybody says, I would trust the Chinese government more than mine here to look after people. My wife has family members that are what we here would call councillors I suppose, but they are party members that look after various regions and i've seen how they operate, it's good on the whole. I would have stayed in China or flown to another Asian country like Taiwan or Japan ..to teach English. The UK is a sinking ship ..you are getting screwed if time in the UK with bills ,taxes ,general cost of living. The NHS is a disaster at the moment .. Rent is an another negative about the UK. Interesting video. I don't personally believe that life needs to be hard for people. We have the money and technology and land across the world to clothe, house and feed everyone but because most of the resources are owned by a small percentage people suffer. The ruling class hoard resources to keep the masses fighting for scraps. The problem is when people accept this rather than fight to change it. Buckminster Fuller talked about this, his quote on work really sums it up. In 2025 life should not in any way shape or form be hard, especially when we still have people calling themselves royals sitting in castles whilst people can't afford to heat their homes.
It's not the 'royals sitting in castles' that are the problem - they cost the taxpayer a fraction of what illegal immigrants sitting in hotels cost us. And at least the royals carry out public duties and represent Britain abroad etc, which is more than can be said for the millions of 'nowhere men' coming over the Channel.

I've been unemployed now for 9 months, with agency work in between (warehouse). It's never been this bad before. I would leave if I could, but like you say, where to? I have a child at school too, so its not really do-able. I hope it gets better.
I suppose the millions of Brits who are quite happy living in the UK never post on channels like this. It´s easy to bash the UK, and I understand that many people want to leave, but often, the dream turns into a nightmare. I only hope that the ones who want to leave do their homework thoroughly and weigh up the pros and cons before finally breaking the ties they have in the UK. The good news is that they can always come back like you did.
Life might have been marginally better for a couple of decades, but in reality, it has never been easy for ordinary people. My parents started out after WW2 with nothing and just had to work hard and do without. We were boomers and yes we got mortgages which was really lucky but none of the luxuries, like holidays, and it was charity shops and secondhand stores all the way to provide for our family. Yes, it’s hard for young people setting out these days but their expectations are so much higher, they want a nice house and a car in the drive, white goods and holidays. Maybe we boomers were at fault for promising our children the earth - fantastic and rewarding careers, loadsamoney, fabulous houses and lifestyles - all they had to do was believe in themselves and they could have it all. It wasn’t realistic and it was a dream was always going to come crashing down.
I live in the fifth most expensive part of the UK houses cost from £425,0000 becasue it's within an hour traveling by train to London. When I told somoeone from the North East they were gob smacked . Like you I recognise we live a volatile word and can see where you are coming from on having children my Mum who's in her late seventies says the same thing. The other week I found myself thinking once my parents are no longer alive I will have the feadom to move elseware. My only other other family lives 40 Miles away with his partner. Your video just popped up in my feed and i watched and subscribed..I'm a British young lady ( from an Arab descent). Lived, worked and studied in London; got 2 masters and a PhD..had great job but yet i was unable to buy a house as a single lady..so, over 10 years ago I left my rented apartment and well paid job in London UK and moved to central Italy...i drefted from farm into another learning skills on how to grow food organically, keep animals, etc using my dwindling saving untill 6 years ago when i managed to buy a very small old stone house ...now i live off grid, not even solar panels, just candlea i make, no car, no electricity, no bills, grow my food, keep chickens to sell eggs and goats for milk..no job, no money but i eat better than a queen and I'm the happiest and healthiest I've ever been. I've learnt alot from preserving my food mainly through fermenting or dehydrating, to animal husbandry using holistic methods, to grow organic food, to making soaps, candles, medicinal oils, ointments, etc..
If I, a single lady, can do it, anyone can..yes i miss the UK, it's my only home but i can't afford to have even a metre of land to live my dream.. maybe one day. Sorry for any spelling mistakes,cetc, as i use this old mobile phone with a limited access to internet..maybe when i can afford a new one i can start a TH-cam channel to share my experience and knowledge. I have just turned 60 my husband retired last year. At around the same time he was diagnosed with MS . He is now in a wheelchair. All the plans we had are now gone. We've no children and no family nearby. I feel very trapped , and with the country as it is i have very little hope for the future. My point is , to anyone and everyone... don't put things off, if you can do something today do it. Take the leap. Take the risk. You never know what life will throw at you. Life is very short.
the MS diagnosis seems linked to his retirement... feeling loss of purpose... control etc.. why do you think there's never a root for autoimmune disorders... because they're emotional/mental... wish you all the best and hope he recovers if he's brave enough to go into the root of it :)

But more and more i think i should retire soon, to take care of my parents and do more around the house. Just want to thank you for your comment

i lived in Hong Kong for 3 years. i am chinese born in the uk. Yes Asia seems easy, I was doing well for my job, doing a part time masters degree in the uni of hong kong, but i missed my sister and family in the UK. I missed the countryside and greenery. i know i could be successful in HK, but I came back to the uk. i know work as a contractor in central government. i am lucky i paid off my mortgage with sister, i have now rented out my whole house and live with my 80 year old parents. I live in rural north Wales. It’s a relatively poor area that relies on the tourist industry. Wages and job opportunities and pretty minimal around here.
I’m 49 and live on my own. Happily may I add!
I have a decent career, but I find that I can generally just pay my bills and mortgage with my wages.
I try to save, but that money usually goes when I have issues with my house or car.
It’s a pretty dire situation at times. I feel like I’m just working to pay bills.
But you’re content has given me a shift in mindset by making me appreciate the little joys of life.
I live in a beautiful area surrounded by nature.
I’ve also known what it’s like to be out of work and have sleepless nights about where my money is going to come from.
So I’ve shifted my mindset to be a lot more appreciative of what I have.
I have a job that I like, a roof over my head and I enjoy living in a beautiful area.
I definitely think that social media has skewed my perspective about life.
All is see is people post their highlight reels. Their new cars, their nice holidays etc.
Constantly exposing myself to this just makes me feel that my life is lacking and that I don’t have a nice life.
But it’s all about a change of perspective.
Some people do get the rub of the green financially. Whereas others probably have to work hard at very stressful jobs to buy these nice things.
I might not be able to get the nice house or car. But is it really worth the stress if I have to sacrifice things like my relaxing walks in nature or just chilling at home with a cup of coffee.
Thank you for your content. You have genuinely helped knock me out of a spiral of self pity and feeling that my life isn’t as good as people who have the financial freedom to do more. But you can have a nice life with the most basic lifestyle with the correct mindset.

I have a 1995 Audi estate and live in expanded ulez zone lmao £12.50 a day to drive my car out of the car park and £37.50 a day if I go into central London. It's a fucking joke. Not to mention taxes. Taxes on capital gains have fucked me. I cant sell a certain digital coin that I have held for nearly 10 years because I would have to pay the government too much and they took none of the risk.. I don't even have to work a 9-5 because I got lucky on investments in 2021 and bought a flat and even I'm still getting shafted. Can't imagine what it would be like to still have to rent in London. Last time I rented a one bed flat in 2019 it was £900, now I am sure it would be closer to £2k. It's all planned 'YOU WILL OWN NOTHING AND YOU WILL BE HAPPY'

You're correct that it's planned. An impoverished population is easier to control. Otherwise it's a major coincidence that all anglosphere countries are experiencing a housing crisis at the same time due to hardly any new home-building and extortionate rents and mortgage terms. Really appreciate the honesty and I completely sympathise with your reasons for staying. It's hard to know what the future will offer long-term living in the UK, and it's also important to appreciate that we are still very lucky and privileged compared to many places in the world.
Walking in nature past old stone buildings is something I love too. Being around others with shared values, culture, and language means a lot. I'm watching you from Montréal, Canada where French is the official language. However, my french language skills are severely lacking despite the last seven years of daily practice and two years of french language school. The main challenge is that I'm very introverted, so I avoid too much interaction with others - self-defeating. It's exhausting learning another language in your 60's. It had always been a dream of mine to live in France, but I didn't manage to make that dream come to life. Your videos are comforting and inspiring. Thank you.
Nice to hear some normal and thoughtful takes on living in the UK. My TH-cam feed is often filled with negative videos, people ranting and raving about failed Britain. This was a breath of fresh air. I'm on the same page as you with the walking - I live down South near Bath and the access to nature is one of my favourite things about the area, coupled with easy access to the city.

I love your positive/thankful/realistic outlook. Your unique life experiences and insights are refreshing. I agree that the cost-of-living is pinching most people these days. I'm in the USA, though, so I am feeling optimistic that these might improve over the next few years. I certainly hope so, for our daughter's sake. She'll hopefully graduate from university in 2.5 years. As a 50-something married woman, life is pretty good. My main stressor lately has been our neighbor's pitbulls and lack of fence/containment. I grew up in a more rural area and was chased by dogs on our way home from school and it's bringing back unpleasant memories and I don't want our daughter to live in fear of going outside, either. I hope and pray that this will only be a temporary situation and it's motivating me to get our finances in order and save money in case we have to move. It's just sad because we've lived in our home for over 26 years and one neighbor's selfishness is ruining our once peaceful neighborhood. The area in which you are walking looks so peaceful. I hope your situation improves and you are able to relish the little joys in life each day.

Im in the UK and for the last 4 years I have been rent free in my hometown in return for some minor security dervices. I was very lucky to have this arrangement but unfortunately I was not earning very much during this time so was not able to save anything. I decided to end this arrangement and get out of my hometown because the convenience of living there has kept me there too long and i want to experience the rest of the country. Im currently on state benefits and sofa surfing around the country trying to pick up work where I can but this isnt yielding too many results. I dont think I will ever be able to afford a normal lifestyle here so Im having to look into other options.
I have friends who are looking at buying some land for some community focused projects and I think I might have to build myself a wooden shack there so i can live in a low cost way and save money while working in the local town.
It will be interesting to see how things develop in the UK because something has to change at some point for better or for worse.

In America they say if your rent is more than 40% of your earnings it’s not good, when in the uk let’s be honest rent is normally 90% of your wages if not more.

Jeez I rent a caravan and it's 800 a month plus 90 for a gas bottle each month now going to charge for electric so another 40 , 50 a month plus 200 a month for fuel for car food is about 2 to 300 , gym membership is 35 that's almost 1600 , oh plus 300 child maintenance that's almost 2k , I take home 2100 so that leaves me with a whopping 100 pound a month to do hobbys and go out to do things !! To invest etc , and that's just renting a caravan. If I was to rent it would be much more ! The UK is fooked and impossible to live.
In the UK ther is no freedom of thought or speech , try speak out about many things and you'll find you soon end up with problems!

I am a retired teacher, and having several weeks off in the summer during my working years I had the opportunity to travel to The UK and European mainland seven times in the from the early 80s up to seven years ago (Iceland Christmas trip). Loved every country I have travelled to, especially the nature in Ireland, England and Wales. My paternal ancestry is English and maternal Irish, so had lots of deja vu moments. Also I appreciate your gratitude for having a good quality education in The UK which taught you critical thinking, open mindedness and a love for life long learning. Liked and subscribed.
I lived in the UK for 20+ years. I went the other way and moved to Russia. It was very easy for me as my wife is Russian. Luckily we did this before the sanctions, so we could still transfer our money over there. We bought a patch of land near the Black Sea and built a hotel. We're now financially secure and no longer have to worry about the future of our 7 year old son. I guess we're now considered "wealthy" (even by western standards). This is the first time in my life I've felt comfortable, and it's a great feeling! If you're broke, you're not "free" (I don't care what anybody says about "freedom", I've learnt this from first hand experience). For the first time in our lives, we actually own things now (instead of owning debt, like a mortgage or car payments). I'm temporarily back in the UK right now, and I can't believe how bad it is. We still travel back to the US at least once a year to see my family and friends, and it's getting grim there too. I'd love to be able to help out my family (especially my brother and sister) financially, but it's not that easy getting money out of Russia now. We can take a certain amount out in cash per person, but we get grilled at the US or UK border every time we do - because we take out the legal limit per person, including our son. I have one friend back in New York state who's a lawyer, but drives an taxi at night!!! While my wife and I (and our son) are fine, what's happening economically still impacts us, especially when we hear/see how it affects our loved ones abroad. I'd love to believe that things will get better, but I just can't see it (yet).

When you live somewhere which is not your home of origin, you still struggle. We have tried for 20 years and finally decided to try to live back home. It was the best decision we' ve made. Financially, family- wise, friends- wise, housing, food, travelling - after a very long period of time we could relax and start enjoying life
I think we are all different. Although Brits our hearts lie with France as that is our way of life with so many genuine friends, unlike people in the UK.

I also started growing my own food during lockdown. we turned our back yard into a veg patch. it's very rough and ready but it gives me and mum so much enjoyment. we made it from free pallet wood we collect.

Was offered a job in the UK. Problem was, I had to apply for the Visa (normal) but the costs of getting that Visa and delays with zero guarantees that if I took the job offer, my Visa would be ready. I had to have at least 50K in savings (had to prove this to the Home Office, didnt even have half of that). I had to prove I would have an additional 10K to cover any emergency healthcare costs. I was hit with an additional 8K in fees, taxes, processing costs. I had to find my own housing (average cost was going to be 1200 BNP) BEFORE I arrived. The job itself was a pay cut from what I was getting in the USA (about 20%) less and the position was only for a year and could be renewed or cancelled at anytime. Even having direct relatives in the UK (Uncle / Aunts / Cousins) didnt help. I had to decline the offer, and glad I did....four months later, the company folded. I would have been in a dire situation if I had proceeded.
The UK makes some people go through this, and then they let others basically walk in and bring their entire extended family.

Thanks for this. It seems an honest and interesting take on how the U.K. is at the moment. I’m moving back to the from Thailand in a few months after 16 years away. I’m returning at 44 after a messy Divorce with my 16 year old son and very little savings. I know it’s gonna be rough to begin with but the walks, nature and culture will make it worth it I’m sure! I won’t be turning on the tv or listening to the radio as I believe they are just making people miserable atm.
After 24 living in the UK, I want to come back to Italy but my daughter is only 17 years old. Her education here in the uk is important. I am struggling mentally and fisically . 57 with osteoporosis, food quality is just for the rich if you find it. Massive propaganda of junkies food and beverages disgraceful. Teenagers used to smoke, and now they vape! Terrible, I am horrified to see the decline and government are useless. It doesn't care about the British. Never mind healtcare. I know I am lucky I can fly to Italy for that. I am patient for a few years until my daughter is independent, and I can return to Italy. England is a beautiful country, and I love it so much. It gave a nice husband and daughter. But now I want to go.

I love the UK but am scared that now an anti British government is ruining everything g we hold dear it will be broken beyond repair.
We need people in charge who share our love for the country as it was as we grew up. I’m not racist at all but Britain is a white country with western values. Locals in China have an easier life than in the UK BY FAR. If this guyhas only been in a megacity maybe he thinks the rest of China is the same, which is not.
In China you can go to smaller cities and someone working in a supermarket earns 500 pounds a month but housing , transport and food is extremely cheap, that is why 90% of chinese people own their homes.
The problem in the west is that not only big cities are expensive, everywhere is very expensive, and safety is a real problem in the UK
And you're not allowed to own anything for self-defence, which was premeditated on behalf of the government if you ask me.

Virilit. I am English by birth and by family history since the beginning of time! I saw the writing on the wall there from a very early age. I was not comfortable there during the 70’s/80’s. I finally left in 1999. I miss some elements (it is my home after all) but now I feel I have probably bought the one way ticket? There was a tentative plan to return to grow old and die but with what I see there now that would be crazy. I have a home I could not dream of in UK. I have all I want. I pay minimal tax and the cost of living is way less than UK. Yet I am in a 1st world country still. I did chuckle when you said free speech is not under threat there. To me it has already been removed. So in conclusion, I miss the UK for sure. The UK of yesteryear. The UK that I was unhappy growing up in! How would I cope with it in 2025? I liked your video though.
I believe the locals’ struggles in China is not proportional to the struggles of the same demographic in the western world. Rent and grocery is more affordable in China. Car and public transportation is cheaper. No/low personal income tax depending your salary. Efficient universal health care. Excellent education. And no property tax! People in China, even for those who are struggling can still afford hobbies and eating out with friends and family. So it is not unethical at all for you as an expat to earn your living in China. You have something to offer and your service is valued. A teacher in China is a very noble profession and highly regarded by Chinese culture. An English friend of mine recently closed a highly lucrative deal in China. And it is very interesting that the final decision was not based on his 30 years in top global management experience but the fact that he is a teacher. My friend is a part time teacher at Birkbeck. Even he is planning to move to Asia because it makes more sense.
So go for it! We all deserve to live a happy and joyful life.

The easy days in Britain ended in the late 1980's when house prices became unmanageable. You would be surprised that even in 1989 it was difficult to get a small house anywhere near London as a single person even with a 'good' job. If you failed to get on the property ladder your fate was sealed i.e. you would never be on the ladder. If you had a council house and 'right to buy' you were very lucky but this was difficult in the south and in any case, it was charity. Now it is harder than ever. I hope the country you love (Britain) will give you something in return as your dedication deserves.

It’s very tough especially when you have kids as the system is set up to bring you down. I also worked in China as a teacher where I met my wife and were able to buy a place in the UK and then started flipping houses and now very fortunately by a combination of luck and thinking creatively own our house outright. We don’t have kids which would have made it very difficult or impossible. China is great if your a foreigner and earn money as a teacher or you can earn money online and live here, but us tough for the locals. Your point about ethical is all good and well and it’s down to if you want to make your life suffer or not. We are not on this planet for long and I am like everyone else who wasn’t born with a silver spoon, but I won’t accept my fate and will always find a solution to make mine and my wife’s life easier.

Now i've watched the whole video i'll wish you luck again! You asked, so our future plans are in China eventually, but like you my mum is here, and I have a business here with clients etc, so we have to stay for now. I would go to China more often but 3 years ago we got a dog and I can't bear the thought of leaving him in a kennel, so i'm stuck for the time being.
We are looking for someone to care for him properly so we can go visit family in Shanghai and in Yunnan we have some friends we are dying to see.
Eventually though, i'll try my best to get to China.
I do worry about the situation in this country, you alluded to it, it's going the wrong way at the minute. Depsite what everybody says, I would trust the Chinese government more than mine here to look after people. My wife has family members that are what we here would call councillors I suppose, but they are party members that look after various regions and i've seen how they operate, it's good on the whole.

Interesting video. I don't personally believe that life needs to be hard for people. We have the money and technology and land across the world to clothe, house and feed everyone but because most of the resources are owned by a small percentage people suffer. The ruling class hoard resources to keep the masses fighting for scraps. The problem is when people accept this rather than fight to change it. Buckminster Fuller talked about this, his quote on work really sums it up. In 2025 life should not in any way shape or form be hard, especially when we still have people calling themselves royals sitting in castles whilst people can't afford to heat their homes.
It's not the 'royals sitting in castles' that are the problem - they cost the taxpayer a fraction of what illegal immigrants sitting in hotels cost us. And at least the royals carry out public duties and represent Britain abroad etc, which is more than can be said for the millions of 'nowhere men' coming over the Channel.

I've been unemployed now for 9 months, with agency work in between (warehouse). It's never been this bad before. I would leave if I could, but like you say, where to? I have a child at school too, so its not really do-able. I hope it gets better.
I suppose the millions of Brits who are quite happy living in the UK never post on channels like this. It´s easy to bash the UK, and I understand that many people want to leave, but often, the dream turns into a nightmare. I only hope that the ones who want to leave do their homework thoroughly and weigh up the pros and cons before finally breaking the ties they have in the UK. The good news is that they can always come back like you did.

Life might have been marginally better for a couple of decades, but in reality, it has never been easy for ordinary people. My parents started out after WW2 with nothing and just had to work hard and do without. We were boomers and yes we got mortgages which was really lucky but none of the luxuries, like holidays, and it was charity shops and secondhand stores all the way to provide for our family. Yes, it’s hard for young people setting out these days but their expectations are so much higher, they want a nice house and a car in the drive, white goods and holidays. Maybe we boomers were at fault for promising our children the earth - fantastic and rewarding careers, loadsamoney, fabulous houses and lifestyles - all they had to do was believe in themselves and they could have it all. It wasn’t realistic and it was a dream was always going to come crashing down.

I live in the fifth most expensive part of the UK houses cost from £425,0000 becasue it's within an hour traveling by train to London. When I told somoeone from the North East they were gob smacked . Like you I recognise we live a volatile word and can see where you are coming from on having children my Mum who's in her late seventies says the same thing. The other week I found myself thinking once my parents are no longer alive I will have the feadom to move elseware. My only other other family lives 40 Miles away with his partner.
