      Sherry, I find it bizarre, that you aren't required to read the accompanying warning information. What are your qualifications? That you don't know the effects or much about meds you are giving to people. Because of people like you that gave me Abilify, I now have diabetes2. I thought I was safe and had I known, I would not have taken it.

      @@grammyd8361 your doctor should have been the one responsible for your treatment. All I do is literally hand clients medication. I don’t understand why you’re coming at me with hostility. I know a whole lot about meds because I went over halfway through nursing school and I aced pharmacology class. The truth is that sometimes people have negative consequences from taking medications. The ads warn people. Sometimes doctors don’t know everything there is about a drug. They’re human and they can make mistakes.

      @@Cheese-is-its-own-food-group Sherry, I apologize. I have bipolar2 and I guess I am still real angry about the Abilify and having diabetis, due to no fault of my own. Going through a lot of stuff right now and guess that it just triggered me. However, there is no excuse for me to be rude to you and again, I am sorry. Perhaps it caused you to think twice before handing out this medicine to a physically healthy person who just is overstressed, overwhelmed or just at their wits end because of a trumatic event caused a mental break. This med made me go from a energetic, spry senior to a unhealthy, neuropathic lady who is homebound and totally alone in the world because of pain and balance loss, I lost my freedom. Diabetes is wicked! I trusted my nurse practitioner to be educated and informed. Abilify, stole what little life I had.

    It would be nice if all doctors took the time to give this information when you are with them while they write out the prescription. I have to read the pamphlets fir all my meds and often consult my pharmacist as one of my doctors so often gives me ridiculous or incorrect Information. But now I understand much better why my psychiatrist prescribed buspirone to be taken with breakfast, lunch and dinner rather than every eight hours!

    • @DrTraceyMarks

      I have to admit I have forgotten to mention the food aspect when I’m going over side effect issues patients. Sometimes there’s so much to say it’s hard to get it all in and then hard for the person to remember it all. That’s why I like making the handouts

    • @whatisahandle221
      @whatisahandle221 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DrTraceyMarks - I really wish a) Pharmacists regularly took time to introduce and chat with new patients/customers (I Q&A mine probably too much) and b) the handouts with medicines are nearly useless: they are legalese warnings only slightly better than the ones on the strings on blinds or baby car seats (posing worst case warnings or vague warnings vs things like effectiveness vs time graphs... or effectiveness vs plecebo... exception: Atomoxitine pills came with a manufacturers, thin papered fold out that was actually decently informative--if you could understand it.)

      @@DrTraceyMarks Ooooh, I feel like you opened my mind to be more flexible and fair-minded about psychiatrists/doctors overall. I hadn’t thought about the doctor’s perspective - I imagine that it would be difficult to juggle all of the details and caveats and unknowns of medications + I imagine there may be legal/ethical binding about how a doctor gives out information (e.g. caution around misinforming patients, to follow the do no harm).
      I’ve had the experience of how communication with others about a subject can become more and more difficult as we learn more and more about it. I have ADHD, which makes me super curious, and I have obsessive compulsive personality traits, which can be positive because I care a ton about the world and people around me. This has driven me to seek understanding about the world, often in service of sharing it with my community (aka geeking out lol). But, as I’ve learned more and more about psychology (mainly complex and developmental trauma, radically open DBT/social psychology, personality disorders, because these apply a lot to my experiences) I’ve gotten feedback from friends and others that when I talk about it, I go way too fast. I also speak like the other person has the same information I do about some niche subject I hyperfocused on for 9 months, like talking about Sensorimotor Psychotherapy stuff and Window of Tolerance without pausing for questions or letting the person switch subjects if they’re uninterested/don’t want to go further in it. That, or I get so frazzled with information about it that I end up unable to speak, except to say that I lost my train of thought - its a computer crash! I share that story/my experiences to try and show empathy/engagement btw - it’s a neurodivergent thing! But yeah, linking that together with what it sounds like doctors need to handle, not to mention… insurance companies… I feel more compassionate and humble toward you and others working as doctors. I imagine the wait time for antidepressants to work is also stressful for you all too!!

    Hi Dr Marks! I have ASD. I'm in college and in just the past year I've decided to give in to tiredness and start drinking caffeine. I felt much more energized, but much more so focused, and it made it much easier to talk to people. I wasn't doing anything on purpose but suddenly I could participate in conversations without blanking on what to say. I looked it up and saw (to my understanding) there are studies that show caffeine can help with symptoms of autism. Can you go into how this works (or doesn't) and why I had not heard about it until recently even though I have been diagnosed and floating around the ASD community for years? Thank you, your videos are excellent.

I was told Viibryd was new for depression back in 2013/15. The immediate notice was nausea which I had never had before, food definitely made a HUGE difference, even though I still feel some affects of nausea, it isn't as bad as it was the first couple of days. I am still surprised at how fast lexapro worked for me, I felt it immediately from day 1.

    • @DrTraceyMarks
      @DrTraceyMarks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is interesting. I’m glad it worked for your insomnia. I tend to use more immediate release Seroquel than the XR. Sometimes I will instruct people to move it back to dinner time because when they take it at 10 PM they have a huge hangover effect in the morning. So to be able to wake up easier they need to take it earlier.

    As both a therapist who specializes in Neurodiversity, and having ADHD myself, ADHD meds, especially Stimulants, have very specific food needs. Taking them with a meal can greatly decrease side effects, especially the "zombie" like effect people don't like, headaches, and nausea. Also, acidic foods like juices and even Vitamin C supplements can break them down too fast. I learned some of that early on in my career in a training on Vyvanse when it was first released, and it solved so many problems for my own meds, even though I was taking Sraterra, a NS. Sooooo many kids take their meds and then go to school to eat breakfast and struggle with side effects because its too much time between when they take the med and when they eat. :/ Even just a gogurt or something small with a little protein in the stomach can be so helpful!

    Hi Dr. Tracy Marks, I could really use some advice. I’m worried about my health as I think my mental issues are causing serious physical symptoms. I’m 21 and weigh 90lbs. I think it’s caused by my anxiety. I’ve never thought of myself as having an eating disorder. My body is constantly shaking uncontrollably. I can’t eat in public at all without becoming violently ill . When I’m at home the only things I can keep down are soup and bread, but I can’t take more than 3-4 bites of anything solid without being sick. I want to explain something else. Especially when I’m in public and attempting to feed myself I feel like there’s something or someone inside of me who makes it impossible for me to eat, sometimes I can hear it’s voice. I have nausea on a daily bases so bad that even though I haven’t really eaten anything in a few days I’ll still throw up as soon as I wake up. This will happen many times throughout my day, even at work. This has been happening for almost 2-3 months. I don’t understand and I’m really scared. Please, any information or your thoughts on the matter would be deeply appreciated.

    What about Adderall, Vyvanse, and Synthroid? I notice a huge change in these medications with food vs an empty stomach. Is this just in my head? I don’t take adderall anymore but do have vyvanse and synthroid daily.

    I'm on geodon and they told me to take it with atleast 350 calories of food. Sometimes that's so hard to do when you aren't hungry. I hate it but it's what works for me.

    • @DrTraceyMarks
      @DrTraceyMarks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is hard to take it with food especially if you take the medication at a time when you don’t normally eat

    Hello Dr. Tracy.
    I've watched almost all of your videos and I really love it! I might miss your videos but can you please tell us more about Alexithymia? I've been getting emotionless these days, not being able to describe much about how I feel. I would be really grateful if you can make a video about it.

    I stopped eating grapefruit because I read somewhere that you shouldn't eat it if you're taking venlafaxine. But then I started a statin, and it has a warning on it about grapefruit. So... I still won't eat it, but if I'd been wrong about venlafaxine + grapefruit, I'll be sad, because I really do love grapefruit.

    Have you done a video on the inability to enjoy things that used to be enjoyable ! It has a name and I can’t recall it . But can this be connected to Chronic pain ? I have sickel cell anemia and I’m trying to make connections between the mental , emotional and physical connections. September was awareness month for sickle cell and no one ever addressed these possible connections. I’ve given up on finding someone outside of TH-cam to discuss this, ppl just aren’t as on point as you are ! Your my new bible , basic instructions before leaving earth 😂

    Seroquel immediate release (Quetiapine) i think is only available on the NHS in the UK, if I take it on a full stomach it takes over an hour to kick in, however you are right immediate release is very heavy it can make you feel awful

    Interesting. I wonder if medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro would interact with sleep medications due to delayed gastric emptying.

    Is lamictal a medication that's at all affected by food?

    • @DrTraceyMarks
      @DrTraceyMarks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not aware of it being affected by food. Some medicines that cause nausea can be helped by taking with food but that’s not the same as food affecting the way the drug works.

    Would be cool if you did a video on hypothyroidism possibly in relation to Depression or bipolar. I’ve been on lithium for only about 2 months and was feeling good up until a couple weeks ago right around the time my TSH went above 20, as my doctor told me, felt like everything stopped working and went back to feeling suicidal with chaotic and frenzied thoughts and directionless restlessness..now on levo and struggling to get used to it as it seems to make me jittery which isn’t helping because I still feel shitty so now it’s just that plus these side effects. I know there’s a connection there but I wonder how “clinically” relevant that is, because I’ve had a subclinical hypothyroidism since I was 17, 24 now, maybe that could’ve been making me just a uptick worse the whole time

    Thanks for the info Dr Marks, it's unfortunate the medications on the must have food list don't have long half lives. Intermittent fasting has helped so much with my condition and overall health. I wonder if the 300 calories for latuda can be pure fat.

    • @DrTraceyMarks
      @DrTraceyMarks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m glad intermittent fasting has helped you. Usually the food requirement is that the meal have a certain percentage of fat. I don’t know if more is better or if it matters if it’s pure fat

    Another super helpful video. I have a question, I would greatly appreciate if you see it, although I know it's hard to navigate through all the comments.
    I was on Zoloft for 7 years. Unfortunately, it stopped working. I just got prescribed Pristiq. I'm originally European living in US. Pristiq is banned in EU due to certain side effects and heart issues, which got me extremely worried. I did notice increase on my heart rate and blood pressure, which I'm obviously gonna discuss with my doctor. My question is, in your general practice over the years, was Pristiq generally safe? And was it effective for treating Panic disorder? Thank you

      Of course that's only what they are thinking/feeling and meanwhile they're de-compensating or going down in regular shape cuz the medicines are leaving the body or out completely, I know because in Texas I'm a QMHP, qualified mental health professionals and I was inspired to get in this field over 30yrs ago because of my brother who has schizophrenia

    I just got prescribed trazodone. I am also on 100mg of Zoloft. I wake up a lot in the middle of the night. At times w hot flashes. My hormones have been checked and are good. I took it one time. It made me drowsy but didn’t put me to sleep. I had to take a Xanax. So last night I didn’t take it and I didn’t sleep at all. I was eating when I took it. I am new to these meds. But my life has been hell for three years. I don’t know what to do 😢
