Finally had a chance to listen - wow, what a difference! The newer one introduces some fizzy high end. Sounds way harsher - also sounds more scooped on the mids.
Cause the high freqs are the first to fall as time marches on perhaps? Don't think I'll be paying 2-3 times the $for some I can roll off with a tone knob...P.T. Barnum was the smartest man ever. He understood the nature of man better than Freud and Nitchie combind...every minute. Yep.
I try not to be that big of a snob and usually think in old vr new comparense that the new one is just as good here not so much. I do a lot of speaker swaps as i beleive they make the biggest easiest change in your amps tone.so old one wins by a shitload to me. Pissed i usually have to get by with the cheaper new one but if we,er just talking tone........
Forget the cabinets, that song was really tasty Johan! Now back to the cabs, that 71 sounds so sweet on the mid range. It's mellow, it's smooth and I want one. That being said, I think that new one would compliment a heavier rock tone a little better. Great video Johan!
Thanks for this comparison. The difference is far beyond I'd expect. I can see that the mic placement is a little different between old and new. In the new one it`s closer to center. It should contribute for the difference we are hearing.
Let me say....the 1971 1960A sounds like a how a good old Whiskey taste, the 2010 is moonshine. Nuff said. Great played as always. Cheers from Jamtland Sweden
Was thinking about getting myself one of those new 4x12 cabs with greenback speakers but after hearing this i now know why i didn't like the 1960ax cab that i once had, so I won't be buying anything. Thank you for this video!
@Johan Segeborn I watch a lot of guitar/tone/review videos to inform myself on what I am looking for in my own tone search. There are dozens of videos that have very capable and even virtuosic guitar players and despite the high level of playing ability, composing in these videos often falls flatter than flat. Opinion is subjective, yes, but one thing that makes your videos so great is your songwriting ability. That is to say, the licks, the riffs and the balance of the "band" to play in it's respective role in a completely digestible way. That and the simple approach you take for recording. I love the drums sound in this one. That kick has sooooo much character. This track has been playing in my mind for 3 days! As always, great work!
Wow. It’s so different to me, that if I didn’t know, I’d assume the speakers were “a different type”.....great vid. Of course I enjoyed the older one....much more “girth” to my ears.
Excellent song Johan! Love it, and loved getting to hear these in the mix. Both individually sound great, and would be an awesome tone to have. The 1970 cab just sounded clearer and less harsh, much preferred over the newer cab. The 2010 cab while still a great tone, did seem to have a little more edge to it and a bit more treble. Love the band!
I love when your cam shakes! The power is there! Older: a bit more mid range. New one: more scooped. But let the cab breath for more 20 years. :) The new one is already broken? Nonetheless, the TONE is astonishing. No one is better than another. You should do an album. So cool and refresh! Cheers,
Johan great video, But i wasnt surprised of the results. Celestion moved their basic line of speakers production to their plant in china somewhere in 2003. Leaving only the heritage series, alnico gold, blue and Mesa's V30 version to still being produced in the UK. Which means that the v30s, g75t12 creambacks and greenbacks are being produced in china with different cone sizes and materials, hence the big difference in sound! However there are some good news, apparently some v30s "marshall label" are still being produced in the UK but only in some of the 1960av and bv models across the UK.
I actually liked the newer one. It let a lot of the high end from the strat through. But I think if i were playing rock with a lot of Overdrive like acdc, I’d prefer the warmness from the old one.
I Do so enjoy your split screen mixes! Thanks for using the single coils! Well done and thanks for sharing brother! Be Well Johan! Oh the Cabs? Love them both of course!
They are basicly two different speakers. The modern greenback is so bright and trebly that it sounds like a different model. I tried newer greenbacks with my JCM 800 but was more satisfied with darker sounding speakers such as g12-65 and WGS et65.
Different to one another for sure , older is warmer , but both good . But the band and tune is so very excellent ! Who are those guys ! LOL Great clip again my friend ! Always the best to be found here ....... lets go !
I really try hard to not be "That guy" that strictly like old gear because it's cool. That being said those older cabs and speakers have consistently impressed me every time Johan has played them. Also, Johan, that was great playing as always! Cheers!!!
I’ve got a 68 B cab with the original Greenbacks and I’ve had 2 1960ax cabs, one with English reissue Greenbacks and the other with Chinese. This video sums up the differences perfectly. The 1960ax is a decent cab but it just hasn’t got the midrange to handle authentic vintage tones.
To me both cabs sounded good clean. The difference was with dirt the newer cab sounded a little brittle compared to the original which I might add sounded amazing especially with you playing through it. You play some tasty tunes man!
Johan - thanks for your videos, it's always awesome to watch and learn. I wonder if you didn't have to compensate the head eq with more treble and less middle for the old speakers. If you want the same warmth tone with the new cab, would you be able to achieve it with a different eq?
The camera tells the story. When he’s playing the riff in the lower register, see how the older cab and speakers makes the camera rumble. The newer cab with the reissues doesn’t have the thump to do that. I’m just curious. Since cabinet resonance is a real thing, I wonder if putting the original speakers in the re-issue cabinet would sound the same as the older speakers in the older cabinet. It just makes me wonder if the construction of the cabinet and the wood that was used in the old cabinet is playing a big role in the tone as well. Hmm...
The 20 watt new greenback sounds much more like the old 25 watt than the new 25 watt speaker. I would love to hear the new 20w vs old 25w comparison!!! I think the cabinet is fine.
All these years I have been buying and selling guitars, trying to get "that" sound. What I finally realized is that the guitar has less to do with good tone than a good amp and cabinet. I now have a Friedman BE100, and this same vintage Mashall cabinet with greenbacks, and even the cheap Indonesian strats and teles sound good through it. My Les Paul, well that goes into the amazing category through my new rig...
Good point, but the mike on the 1960AX is placed closer to the center than on the original. That makes the reissue sound brighter. On the other hand, I have experienced that reissued greenbacks sound a bit harsh compared to originals. In this case I think the comparison is a bit unfair, and set to the extreme because of the mike positioning.
i have notice that. 1cm at that point make a huge diference... the 71 sounded way better but i can hear the mic placement position... i still cant say the real diference between booth
Pretty spot on. I've got a 2000 1960ax and a mid 70s check 1960b with later 1978 black backs 75hz. I think I might swap in 2 out of each to balance out the two cabs and see how it sounds
Had to miss the premier due to work. But, I love your playing in a mix. I think the Original sounds best, but I wouldn't throw out the new one. It may sound a bit smoother with a humbucker equipped guitar. The Strat showed how spiky the highs were on the new cab/speakers. Great video as always bro! God bless.
I was actually surprised to hear that the newer cab, with the newer speakers, had a vintage green back meets blackback vibe. I could actually imagine getting a convincing AC/DC (Highway era ) tone.
Hi Johan, have you ever tried the Heritage 20w Greenbacks? I'd really like to know if they are closer to the original ones than the standard Greenback reissues. I actually like the standard ones too, but this video shows there still is a difference with the vintage ones. I have seen your latest video with the 20w speakers and they sound great, so I'd like to know how close the Heritage ones could get to them
The new one has a harsh high end. Is the difference only speakers or cab as well? Have you tried pulsonics in a new cab or tge chinese greenbacks in the vintage cab?
The AX is loaded with the Chinese G12Ms right? But in the Metropolous vid 'Metropoulos G12M Speaker Shootout 2013' the Chinese reissue compares very well with a reference G12M from 1967. I just don't know what to believe!
There is nothing better than G12M T221 75Hz 003 Pre Rola Speakers.....!!!! LOVE my 4x12 from 1969 speakers and my 4x12 from 1970 speakers... its the speakers.... i got rid of the old stinky cabs and put them in new cabs - HEAVEN..... dont know why people buy these speakers like crazy they are worth every penny and i think they are almost as gold as a vintage amp itself
The vintage one sounds way better, sweeter, smoother and less ear fatigue inducing , but I'd love to hear both in a heavier context, and maybe a fuller mix. Between the two the newer one would likely cut far better thanks to those rawer high mids which deliver far more presence.
I agree with most of the comments that the reissue is a bit thin, but that may have something to do with the amp that it is paired up with. One thing I have learned from watching so many demos on this channel is the combination of amp and cab creates the tone, so maybe an amp more pronounced in mods and mid lows would have a better result.
That is a lot more difference than I though there would be. The new one is not filtering out the fizz. It's really noticeable on that riff you play where you are bending the G string at the second fret. The amount a speaker filters out is easy to get an idea of if you use load boxes and IR. Turn the IR off and there's that fizz. The output of an overdriven amp is actually quite nasty, but the speaker takes most of that out. Some do it better than others it seems. I wonder why?
Just enjoying your great tune this time around!! Am thinking of buying a new greenback to mix with cream back 65 and put the second cream back in a 1x 12 cab to replace a Celestine 70/80.
Love the 71 cabinet :-) Thank you for doing this essential comparison - such a pity the new Marshall cabinets just don't sound as good. I have tried custom cabinets from other makers that use seasoned wood for the cabinets, with a real attention to detail with the joins on the corners, type of wood glue, grill cloth material, etc. It all makes a difference but cost more of course.
Fortunately now there are vintage cab impulses that can get you there, besides that it's nearly impossible to own a vintage cab. Thanks Johan for showing this to us 😉, great!
Cool concept and Im sure it will be epic as all your uploads are. HOWEVER: I hate this new PREMIERING at xx:xx preview format. Ultimate tease, I much prefer to open TH-cam and there’s just a new unexpected video for me to enjoy.
Hey Man ! I have a similar 71 , but I actually prefer to use my original 1979 JCM 800 4x12 loaded with G12-65``s when I use a Marshall 100w head. Unless I use the Silver Jubilee ( 1987) , then you have to go for a vintage 30`s 4x12 cab.
Old cab is the clear winner imo esp with crunchier tones, cleans are good on both. Thanks for focusing more on strat & M greenbacks instead of humbucker guitars with H greenbacks like you used to as I'm a big strat over plexi/G12M evangelist. Though I'm curious how the old cab would stand up to cab loaded with a broken in set of Heritage Greenbacks in this same setting. The Heritage G12M's are significantly better sounding than the regular reissues (I'm not so impressed by the Hertiage G12H but I do like the Heritage G12Ms a lot). Keep up the good work ♫ Karst & EXP // Amsterdam // The Netherlands
I actually have one of those British cabs with the sticker on the bottom right.. I find myself playing the blues Junior more than the Marshall... Now we know why... Like if you listen to some of the Allman Brothers stuff from the 7071 days... Turn the Blue sky solos it was like they were ringing the bell... And you can kind of hear it in these cabinets that you got there the the old one sounds so much different thank you
Wow...Day and night difference. The '71 sounds like a warm summer day. Great groove. Have you thought about sharing an Impulse Response of your '71 1960A ? That would be so fun to play with. Thanks as always.
The winner of this shootout are the pulsonic cones... I wish celestion would get serious about recreating them. Smoother - more musical... those reissues are harsh in comparison. Thanks for the side by side - great stuff...
I dont understand how In 2020 they can make them identical to the vintage ones they should even be able to account for wear. Like wtf. Scumback is the closest I've found. I cant afford really pulsonic cones. I have ONE of them on a 2x12 with scumback H55 for my jtm45. But I want to fill my 1960a with pulsonic greenies and but golds in my 2x12
The 1971 sound more lively and open to me. The 2010 sounds a bit nasal in direct compare. Both sound great, though. I play a 1960AX from the late 90`s myself and still love this cab. Great compare, love it! Keep it up, Johan \\M//
Best channel on youtube!!!... would be awesome to if you could test some of the other greenback clones to see if there is some that comes closer to the original
Johann you didn't mention about the construction but I would imagine that there is a difference between the two cabinets regarding at least the material used in the back. The other thing that would be interesting to do would be to swap the speakers between the Cabinets to see how much follows the cabinet versus the speaker.
I would like to SEE frequency response curves for both... I bet they extended the newer speaker in the upper range... hence the more detailed audibility of artefacts of the gain structure.
Vintage stuff usually is more limited, and guitarists seem to be drawn to this. When I play my 4x10" Jensen Alnico Cab, it also sounds very warm and full etc. But I'm also missing some harmonics in the upper range, sometimes.
Yeah, the vintage one is better sounding to my ear for sure. By the way, this track is awesome. Love the groove you've got going and that little overdriven riff is awesome.
I listed first without watching so I wouldn't be biased towards vintage. Then watched to see which was which. Man, that 71 all day long. Guess I am saving up for a vintage one instead of the newish one I just found on CL :(
The newer cabinet holds up well in comparison as long as you're keeping it pretty clean. Start cranking up the square waves and it doesn't stack up against the original nearly as well, but the tone that you get then is still very interesting in and of itself. I do wish someone would figure out the proper cone doping procedure for Celestion's benefit. It'd be great if the greenback reissue actually had that proper Pulsonic tone response.
It sounds almost like the reissue is making up for the shrill high end that was present in early Marshalls that just aren’t in modern amps. That top end is why we love a Marshall, though.
the 2010 sounds fine on its own, BUT the 1971 just has a special low end warmth to it that puts it ahead !
1971 was sooooo much better in the recording.
Finally had a chance to listen - wow, what a difference! The newer one introduces some fizzy high end. Sounds way harsher - also sounds more scooped on the mids.
That song in the begining is awesome dude! The bass part especially opens it up a lot, EVERYONE CALL OUT JOHAN FOR A SECOND ALBUM!
Thanks my friend, it will be my pleasure!
Would love to hear something featuring a superbass, that vintage ABR on the reissue les paul, and the older cabinet in this vid!
VERY Sticky Fingers era KEEF!
Its crazy how different the top end and mids are. The vintage stuff really is magical.
Vintage stuff is old and used, that's all.
@@Honeythebeebee no way the new speakers are gonna sound like the vintage ones when they are used. They sound like totally different speaker models.
@@MariJu1ce Who knows? It obvious that these old speakers (and amps) sounded brighter back in the days
Old cab is meaty and balanced, the new one nasal and thin. Some vintage stuff costs more for a real reason 👌
It certainly does :-)

@@JohanSegeborn Johan, is the newer cab "played in"? Because that can make a HUGE difference tonally.
the 70's one sounds so much better, the new one is way too bright.

The 1971 is so much smoother. 2010 lacks a balanced sound. I'd still play either in a heartbeat.
Original wins. Hands down. Deeper, more complex, less grainy/harsh, fuller. No contest.
Forget the cabinets, that song was really tasty Johan! Now back to the cabs, that 71 sounds so sweet on the mid range. It's mellow, it's smooth and I want one. That being said, I think that new one would compliment a heavier rock tone a little better. Great video Johan!

Excellent comparison! Gonna go have me a little whiskey... thanks for the inspiration!
LOL Perfect analogy!
They both sound great, and great playing as well.
Yeah, and all those guys gloryfying vintage go over the band. New is good, brighter so what?
Sounds like whoever was in charge of that AX project has lost most of their hearing in the upper frequencies.
Was thinking about getting myself one of those new 4x12 cabs with greenback speakers but after hearing this i now know why i didn't like the 1960ax cab that i once had, so I won't be buying anything. Thank you for this video!

Not even close. Love the 1971 version better. Once again an awesome demo!
Cool concept and Im sure it will be epic as all your uploads are.
HOWEVER: I hate this new PREMIERING at xx:xx preview format. Ultimate tease, I much prefer to open TH-cam and there’s just a new unexpected video for me to enjoy.
i like the little chat that comes with the live premiere
I agree, I get a notification just to tell me to wait an hour
Upper mid bump on the newer cabinet. Both are great, just different.
And you can kind of hear it in these cabinets that you got there the the old one sounds so much different thank you
Thanks!
Wow...Day and night difference. The '71 sounds like a warm summer day.
Great groove.
Have you thought about sharing an Impulse Response of your '71 1960A ?
That would be so fun to play with.
Thanks as always.
Thanks Lu! Hopefully I will do an Impulse response video soon and then we can document some of the cabs.
That would be awesome.
Thanks for the reply :)
Love the vintage grill cloth!
The 71, sounds a lot smoother. The 2010, is harsher and more trebly, in an abrasive way.
Yea the older one is warmer but the newer one cuts easy in a mix.Can always eq to taste
Thanks for this video! I'm wondering if the mic placement was exact on both cabinet? The newer cab sounds brighter.
Johann you didn't mention about the construction but I would imagine that there is a difference between the two cabinets regarding at least the material used in the back. The other thing that would be interesting to do would be to swap the speakers between the Cabinets to see how much follows the cabinet versus the speaker.
As you said the difference is obvious. The original wins by miles and miles. And that song deserves to be on an album. With vocals.
The Johan brothers just kick ass!
The originals are warmer.. smoother and fuller.. the re-issues are more shrill and a bit thinner... Great Post
Thanks man!
ive just noticed that on some of your stuff has synths low down in the mix ? or am i hearing things? awesome playing and job man!
1971 has sweet smooth tone, I like that one.
Sounds like more mids from the 71 and I preferred that, but without the comparison, the AX sounded cool too.
Yeah the 71 has a fuller better balanced tone
It sounds almost like the reissue is making up for the shrill high end that was present in early Marshalls that just aren’t in modern amps. That top end is why we love a Marshall, though.
