I'll list a few because it's one of my favorite things: Deadly Premonition of course, Mizzurna Falls (old ps game that recently got a fan translation), Kathy Rain, Night in the Woods, Oxenfree doesn't take place on a small town but has a very cool vibe, Life is Strange, Costume Quest more kid friendly but fun nontheless, Silent Hill of course.

I remember hearing a bit of trivia that in the original version of the game, the batteries were sponsored by a real battery brand, and all the battery pickups in the game used their logotype.
Then they retracted the sponsorship because the batteries last like 10 seconds in-game and the devs had to patch them back into generic batteries again.

Nah. The original still has the sponsored batteries...the sponsorship wasn't renewed so they were removed from the remake. I've got the xbox360 version and the batteries are the same. If you'd bothered to watch the video he literally says the product placement is still there?

I think my biggest problem with Alan Wake is how spread out its narrative is. The Bright Falls mini series was one thing, but did they really need to put five exclusive manuscript pages in the official game guide? Wanna know what came from Barry making those calls for the sheriff? Read this comic. Wanna know how Hartman survived? Read this other comic.
I think the worst has to do with a character who only appears once in the entire game. Remember that guy at the very beginning off the game, who helps Alan during the prologue nightmare? Well that guy is a named character who wrote an in-universe novel called 'The Alan Wake Files.' This book got a physical printing as part of the games original release as part of its collectors edition. Now why is this important?
Well, despite never having been republished or made widely available, both the character and the book are confirmed canon in Control by name drop.
TLDR; the remaster should've had the comics and all the extra manascript pages included, and the Alan Wake Files should've been reprinted or sold as a pdf.

Great atmosphere, radio shows especially the first ones playing in night and believable world all were to make a good experience for me and while the atmosphere was eerie it had that kinda calmness to it. If I want to highlight a chapter it will be 3 because of how cinematic it is. It starts with a visit and talk, the police arrives, Alan escapes and Nightingale shoots at him, going to through the forest while the darkness attacks the police, you can see damaged police cars, the radio station and the great ending with Alan being thrown in to a lake. I was playing chapter 3 at night and when I heard the cops shouting that something attacked them and then I saw their wrecked cars in the forest with the great atmosphere that the game had I was excited to see what was going to happen and I knew it would be fun. Also I felt relaxed listening to the radio shows at night in the cabins

When the Alan Wake 2 trailer dropped, that's genuinely the most excited I've been for a game in a long time. At first I didn't know why I was so excited because I found the first Alan Wake to be just a good game. I liked the flashlight mechanic, and I thought the writing was interesting. However, no Remedy game has really ever resonated with me. I like Max Payne, Quantum Break, and Control, but the games have always been interesting concepts for action. But when they said Alan Wake 2 would be survival horror, I realized that's what made me so excited. The world Alan Wake is trapped in is so nebulous and sinister that it screams horror. I really hope they knock it out of the park.

Alan Wake is in my top 5 best games I've ever played I bought it for my friends when it came out on Steam, I wanted them to experience this great game. I even this year purchased the book to read before Alan Wake 2 came out.
While I understand the game doesn't have the most variety of enemies in it you really couldn't add any different enemies to make it seem like that's it's rooted in somewhat believable reality these are normal small logging town people taken by the darkness, animals would make it come across at cheesy or gamey( like taking on a group of Taken Deer or Bears)
About the part where the levels of the game are long and dragged out if you have ever been to an actual logging town near Canada, you will find miles and miles of wilderness, gravel roads, and trees and if you have ever been on a long hike it takes a while to get anywhere considering in the game you walk or runs most of the time it going to feel slow. There have been other games that have also done the long stretch of distance gameplay, The David Lynch/ Twin Peaks-inspired game "Deadly Premonition". I personally like my game world to feel big like the real world but not needing to be.

I cant agree with the opinion of no driving, as a big city resident i loved driving in the woods and in a small town. Alan wake was the most recent title i had in my xbox and the graphics blew me away, a driving sequence meant much more distance to cover and more stuff to see.

PSA: For the Remaster (which is subtle but great), if you don't have access to DLSS, you can mod in FSR2/XeSS. It's also easily one of the best implementations of FSR2 on the market ironically enough. Identical in visuals to DLSS2.
Played in 2023 in 1440p120 FSR2 Quality on an RX 5700 XT.

I can't speak for Quantum Break, outside of a suggestion to look at the "Alan Wake Lecture" boards in the game, as well as some of the prototype Alan Wake 2 teasers in the game. Considering the nature of the Remedy-verse, I wouldn't be surprised if they were somehow relevant, but they are interesting regardless.
That being said, Control. Do Not Sleep on Control. Putting aside how interesting the setting of Control is in the first place, there are quite a few references to Alan Wake in the game. I won't go into any direct spoilers, but the entire AWE expansion, and not just the Alan Wake scenes, is fairly important to the state of the world and some of the characters prior to Alan Wake 2. The expansion covers the FBC's investigation into the Bright Falls AWE, which serves as more of an outsiders study into everything that took place during Alan Wake 1, and during the decade that followed. Despite being DLC for Control, the AWE expansion should very likely be considered a refresher and follow up to Alan Wake, and a prologue to Alan Wake 2. It cleans up some of the loose ends left over from Alan Wake, and sets the stage for Alan Wake 2. Highly recommend checking it out before Alan Wake 2 drops. Also Control is amazing.

I remember playing this game way back in the day, but the gameplay was way too tedious for me to enjoy anything else about the game. The shadow armor the enemies have just felt like it just drew out the combat encounters to be longer more than it adding a strategic element, skill check or anything like that.

In all fairness, and maybe for some irony.. the place where Alan wake would have taken place, especially back then.. entirely dominated by AT&t, I couldn't get a signal at all on T-Mobile or Verizon.. which meant I LOL I was lost in the dark woods quite literally because it gets dark around 3:30 in the evening in the winter.. after I ended up 5 hours later in the exact place I started, I just got a hotel and quit until the daylight pretty much.. I found the last place in town that was open that served food within 10 minutes of it closing and I just was I was done LOL.. when I left I learned the trick was follow the trucks, they lead you to freedom.

I really hope Alan Wake 2 doesn't take your guns away every time that Alan Wakes up to a new day. The original game is a masterpiece of atmosphere and story telling - but certain quirks with the gameplay and pacing have kept me from replaying it.

9:30 - I listen to videos at work to tune out the general office noise and usually only pay half-attention, so when you said "Alan Wake does drag", it confused the hell out of me because I genuinely thought you meant like drag performing, d'oh! I was like "wait, what?! I don't remember that part of the game!! Was Alan's fabulous lip-synching skills in the DLC?!"
    Derp. 😖

    Hi Boulder Punch :)
Did you play Deadly Premonition ? This game (it's now a cult game) came out during the same time as Alan Wake. I strongly recommend to have a look or, even better, to play it. It's worth your time, even if it's massively flawed. Take care of yourselft and kind regards from Switzerland :)

This game was a very fun experience and experiment to me. It was cool to see a developer going with such creative ideas and elements for story telling. I liked how meta it was and how the town was a character of its own. It may not have been perfect, but to me it was a solid experience. The episodic thing was so cool at the time lol. I guess if one is to say something about Alan Wake is that it is a very unique experience.

the difference between alan wake and max payne is that this game is more of narrative experience with a bit of gameplay slapped on top. the tanky controls and weight of the characters movement add to the immersion that you are controlling a regular unathlethic writer .. plus i liked the visuals and artsyle of 2000s thriller movie look that being said it the gameplay loop is not fun for more than 2 episodes .. the flash light mechanics is good at first but its never expanded upon and get repetitive by the end .thankfully it wasnt that long.. because what kept me playing is the story it was like wsatching an average movie.. overall i was disapointed because this wasnt the direction i wanted games to take

    Dumb title, good review.
In the Remedy Universe, Alan Wake is a Lake not an Ocean. Control would be considered an Ocean. The difference is how large the scope of the threat is. If it can cross over to multiple games worlds then it’s bigger than a lake. Alan Wake as a series with the AWE content has shown it is now a lake connected to the ocean.

I feel like you can just tell that the game is full of compromises, but setting a rare example, Remedy managed to pull just the right components together into a great experience.
That said, knowing all the things that had in mind during development, it's a huge shame that they couldn't do it the way they envisioned. It would have done wonders to the less than stellar pacing of the game as it is.
