6:50 maybe that's why omastar went extinct. maybe shelldar used to be its food source and has a softer shell, but over time shelldar developed a stronger shell and omastar couldn't eat it anymore, so it died out.
Also 'to crack open a shell' especially when referring to bivalves like clams and oysters can mean to pry open the shell; often also called shucking. A common tactic used by squids and octopuses is to use the suction cups on their tentacles to rip clams and oysters open.
+ThePunkPhantom Another of Omastar's pokedex entries explains why it died out....It says that due to it's heavy shell it became unable to chase it's prey and hence died out of starvation....

I think yanmega is an absolute gold mine of creepy pokedex entries. check out this gem from BW2 and X, and OR

I never saw that PokeDex entry for Magcargo before. Why I don't get is that it says water vaporizes on contact with its body, yet it's doubly weak to Water-types.

Think of how many times pikachu shocks Ash in the anime, Why isn't he dead? Is Pikachu dramatically weaker?

+CometFire321 Steam erupts because water saps energy (heat) from lava when they touch or get close, which also causes it to cool and harden.
Magcargo, like Slugma, uses it's internal lava to carry nutrients. We can also assume that, like Slugma, when their body cools it hardens and falls off which would cause not only physical damage, but also lower it's ability to transport nutrients!
It's like a young imaginative boy is the one writing these dex entries. They over exaggerate so much on what these creatures can do, yet we rarely ever see them do any of what their dex entries say.
"Pumbloom may be small but it can... it can, uh, IT CAN SHOOT OUT WORLD WAR 3 BEAMS HOTTER THAN THE LARGEST SUN IN THE UNIVERSE!!!"

In Macargo's defense its been proven that pokemon can turn off certain things like in that Ponyta episode where Ash gets on a ponyta and the lady says that ponyta can make the fire not hurt humans if it feels comfortable with the human, it works the same with macargo, maybe he chooses not to burn through earth or evaporate the little girl hugging it

Perhaps Omastar being unable to crack Shellder's shell is why it went extinct in the first place. Shellder's shells evolved (as in natural selection not pokemon evolution) to become to tough so Omastar lost its food source.

I think it should be remembered that the Pokedex is not a fact based info machine but one that uses facts, rumors, myths, legends and theories... and mixes them together, rarely (though not never) identifying which is which... that said, while I think the Pokemon world is similar to our world, it's probably a lot more powerful...

Completely unrelated to spooky Halloween Pokédex entries, but when you put up Shauna next to Gotharita, I realized that their designs are really similar. I knew Shauna was supposed to resemble that evolution family, but putting Shauna and Gotharita next to each other I realized the hair almost exactly matched! I wonder why they Shauna even looks like Gotharita in the first place though. I don't think she even uses that evolution family when you battle her.

You know, for kids!

Magcargo: It's also nonsense because mechanically, Magcargo sure as hell doesn't make water evaporate; water absolutely ANNIHILATES Magcargo. Dirt does, too, but the better Ground attacks are usually physical.
Parasect: Oh, its real-life inspiration gets even worse. At some point, the fungus will force the bug it has infected to climb as high as possible and completely overtake the bug, leaving it as just a corpse full of fungus which can now spread its spores. Brrrrrrrrr...
Xatu: The second picture seems like the most horrifying thing Xatu may have seen. The Smash fanmade seems way too pleasant to be what he saw, though. Or maybe Xatu is just paralyzed in confusion about the existence of Pepsiman.
Gothorita: Are Psychic and Ghost Pokemon working with the Body Snatchers? Because the Body Snatchers creep me right the flap out.
Carracosta: Must be a great swimmer if its fins can crack you so easily.
Omastar & Shellder: Is this one of those "shield which can repel any attack" and "spear which can break any defense" situations?
Slowking: If the "poison" somehow expands your mind, is it truly poison, or some kind of brain-activation chemical like dopamine? Also, when did Shellder develop a poisonous bite / clamp?
Metagross: Weird how Metagross, which looks like a spider tank made from a meteor, has a mouth, while Poliwhirl (a frog) doesn't seem to open its mouth ever, if it has one.
Golbat: No mention tonight of the weird Gene Simmons tongue it had that one time which just... vanished? Also, it's freaky how this thing's body just seems to be an always-agate mouth. I would imagine it has to close at some point. Same comment goes to Gyarados, though according to the Stadium games, Gyarados should be able to close its lower jaw.
