    Hey just curious if you know the frame rates for the prores without a crop. Having a hard time finding that anywhere. Looking for the 48fps with no crop.

      @PeterBaerveldt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Didn’t think about that. Sorry. Tomorrow is Part II going live but I’ll add it today. Wondering why I did not include that in the first place. Thank you for asking!

    • @PeterBaerveldt
      @PeterBaerveldt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I still forgot! I’m so sorry but the Max. Fps in prores is: 120 fps in 2k. It matches the RAW framerates 1:1 apparently.

      Peter Baerveldt does it all have the same crop? Was curious because I heard you can do 4K no crop in prores.

    • @PeterBaerveldt
      @PeterBaerveldt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The max. Recording Resolution of prores is 4K indeed. You can use the full sensor (6k 17:9) but then you’re limited to 40fps.
      It basically works the same way as the RAW examples when it comes to framerates. So if you want to shoot 60fps you need to select the 4K 17:9 which will create a crop on the sensor. So you can’t shoot 120fps on a full sensor readout.

    I like the wider field of view of the Komodo, but the Raven looks to have more dynamic range. Thanks for sharing!

    Not Fair,You should compare the 4.5K Full sensor Vs 6K Full sensor,not the 4K UHD because of the Crop

    Interesting perspective into a Raven/Komodo user. Start up, calibration, frame-rates, menu systems, compression options, the camera having to restart to switch between prores/raw..... makes me even happier with my UMP G2. Thanks for sharing.

    Great video! Owning a DSMC2 Dragon-X, Komodo really interests me as something with similar image that can be flown on small gimbals. I am a bit hesitant to pull the trigger on it though until we have a real dynamic range comparison. So many great cameras coming out right now, but can we take a moment to just appreciate how pretty the Komodo is? Even if the Sony/Canon whatever makes more sense based on whatever features, I feel like I'd be more inspired shooting Komodo.

    • @PeterBaerveldt
      @PeterBaerveldt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I feel you, Dragon-X is such an amazing camera. I felt like that it is what Raven should have been. Dynamic range is difficult to test correctly. I do sort of talk about it for a bit in Part II. I did an under- and overexposure test with a grayscale card. It's not scientific but it focusses on how well the camera's perform in 'extreme' situations.
      I must say that I'm shooting everything right now with Komodo and it's such a pleasure to shoot with, a lot of fun to shoot with and it feels like a tool that can handle the tasks that i've been trowing at it. Competition is coming but in the Raw department nothing has come close so far i feel like. I'm hyped for the new c70 tho. Looks like a camera that is a lot of fun to shoot with. Always loved shooting video with the 1dxmII and my c200 so combining those sounds amazing. Thank you for your comment man! It's so nice to have all these awesome interactions.

    I think it will be interesting to see how this camera compares to other cameras in this price point. The raven is, I think, more than double the price of the Komodo. What about comparing it to the Canon C70? Same mount, similar pricing...

    • @PeterBaerveldt
      @PeterBaerveldt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with comparing the c70! Pre-order is placed🔥 a second hand Raven will cost you around the same price. But when I bought it was more than dubble the price indeed!😱

  • @coreyandolina5392

    Awesome review! It really helps people that are looking to get into the Red ecosystem, to show them where each camera has their strong points. It’s also interesting because right now in the used market we are starting to see the Red raven drop closer down to the $6k mark as what the Komodo costs right now.
    Can I ask, what would the file sizes be for shooting comparisons?

    • @PeterBaerveldt

    I own the komodo and the raven as well. I think another interesting thing to talk about the two especially at the financial audience both captures (sub $10k camera) is data rates. Typically at this range, people mostly do not have a big media budget if a raven or a komodo would be their A camera.
    My opinion personally is that the Raven saves a lot of media budget with the 12:1 or even 15:1 in some cases. The komodo is stuck eating 512gbs of media with only barely a 90min record time per card.
    Anyway, cheers!

    • @PeterBaerveldt
      @PeterBaerveldt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So true! I do indeed talk about it in Part II. But Raven is a lot more data friendly for sure.

    Great comparison video between the Red Raven and Red Komodo, can I ask you where you bought that cage for the Komodo? I see it says "small rig", but did not find it on their site.

    • @PeterBaerveldt
      @PeterBaerveldt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I understand you couldn't find it! It's a 'selfmade cage made up with the GDU timmy ribs on both sides combined with a Smallrig nato rail with arri pins on the right side and smallrig hot shoe on the left. On top I have the 90mm smallrig nato rail. I'll do a video on this soon. I can talk a bit more in-depth about it. Thanks for noticing man! Quite happy with this setup.

    hello Peter,
    thanks for the great comparison videos, awesome!
    I have a Raven for 3 years and am thinking of switching to the komodo.
    So my question, is it possible for you to upload some of the footage of both cams so everyone can get their own impression?
    I'm most interested in skin tones and the quality itself.
    Thank you and best regards
    Martin

    • @PeterBaerveldt

      Hey! I don't have any downloadable footage right now of both camera's side-by-side (just the komodo). If you want to check that out visit my channel and you'll find the link under the video.
      I recently decided to sell my Raven and invest in a second Komodo. of course I advise to rent a komodo yourself for a day and check things out but I can say the camera is amazing and it's so much more effective for what I do that I decided to sell the Raven and fully commit to a Komodo setup.

    May I know what's the rationale behind comparing Raven 8:1 to Komodo LQ compression? Shouldn't it be at least MQ for 8:1 equivalent?

    • @PeterBaerveldt
      @PeterBaerveldt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it doesn't luckily! LQ is amazing and closer to 8:1 than MQ (from what i've read online MQ is closer to 5:1). This could be different of course! There's no official statement on that yet from RED. I didn't like the data rate of MQ. LQ works better for me personally.

    • @BalaKrishna-bq5iz
      @BalaKrishna-bq5iz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PeterBaerveldt I'm sure LQ is good enough for most usecases, but when you're doing a test for the purpose of a comparison, I think playing should be fairly level. There's no way LQ is anywhere closer to 8:1 in terms of compression.

    should you calibrate the sensor every time?

    • @PeterBaerveldt
      @PeterBaerveldt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't have to as long as the temperature doesn't change too much I believe. But to share what I usually do: I wait for the sensor's 'T' emblem to turn Green and then Calibrate at the start of the shoot day. I'm good with that. You can shoot without calibrating, and it will be fine if you do, but when it takes such a short amount of time I would recommend just doing it for the getting the best results.

    120 fps is big for me and I was expecting it at least at 5k that's the only disappointment for me and hold back

    • @PeterBaerveldt
      @PeterBaerveldt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah if 120fps in 5k is a must you shouldn't go with RED I think. Even Monstro, helium, gemini and Dragon-x don't do 5k HD 120fps. It's 5k 2:4:1 in 120fps or 4k HD i believe.

    • @FlashOneFilms
      @FlashOneFilms 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter Baerveldt umm yea they do I own the Raven and it does 120 FPS at 4.5 k

    • @PeterBaerveldt
      @PeterBaerveldt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FlashOneFilms But 4.5k on Raven is not 5k? If widescreen is an option then like i said all RED's DSMC2 bodies can shoot 120fps in 5k 2.4:1 just not 16:9. Honestly I thought that was what you meant. Only Raven and Komodo don't.
      I do get your point, Slowmotion is the biggest downside with this camera for many users. It is something that we use and need. Not having it is inconvenient to say the least.
