This is really a video that many more people should watch. Really glad I came across an article the other day about Ub Iwerks. So I took to youtube when I read about Leslie making a film about her grandfather, what a great story I only knew a little about previously.
The entire Iwerks family has been inspirational over two centuries! So many have been touched by their creativity, dedication, engineering and the belief life's a story to be told... film its greatest medium. Leslie, as an accomplished filmmaker, to her father, Don, co-founder of Iwerks Entertainment, have largely shaped cinematic entertainment through a variety of unique projection technologies and cross-continental storytelling. We're grateful for their contributions that will live on for generations to come!
With the 1 exception being that Walt and Ub after their falling out eventually started working together again and Walt gave Ub the positions he wanted.
A really interesting ted talk about the story behind the story of Disney. Anyone interested in Disney's beginning and saving "burning libraries" (watch the talk) should view this. Great job!
I have seen the Documentary the hand behind the mouse and don said when Walt died his father Ub iwerks was sad about losing his friend Rip Ub iwerks Rip Walt Disney
That's because Iwerks didn't invent, Mickey. Mickey is a redesigned Oswald rabbit, which Walt created. I am not saying that Ub didn't have anything to do with the creation of Mickey, but Walt was also a great animator and both he and Ub created Mickey, how much each contributed to the design or look of Mickey ? Only they truly know for sure and anyone else who might have been there at the time.
@@Superman679 Absolutely correct. Even the Iwerks Family have confirmed Walt first came to Ub about the initial idea of making Oswald into a mouse and Walt's wife did suggest Mickey when Walt thought about naming him Mortimer. Ub did all the animations up until 1930 then left and came back 10 years later to do some animation but mainly to work on filming equipment and other innovations. Walt did do a rough first sketch of Mickey and would later doodle a image of Mickey for fan signings (extremely expensive to acquire now) but Ub was the animator for Mickey for those critical first years. Walt would later use the name Mortimer for Mickey's rival that pines for Minnie and gets Mickey insanely jealous in one of the few times Mickey got really mad.

Without Ub, the Walt Disney company wouldn't be here today. He is just as important as Walt and Roy.
Ub Iwerks is the Steve Wozniak to Walt Disney is to Steve Jobs.

Great artists always have stories to share, thanks for sharing this.

@@dtnetlurker Walt drew the original sketch of Mickey. Ub made it more applicable for animation.
