I thought the bird and cat scenes paralleled the underlying psychopathy in both characters, needlessly (attempting to, at least) murdering animals. Basically the two characters shared that major
underlying character/personality trait and collided, with devastating effects. You could say they brought out the best/worst in each other. I also thought the graduation speech, followed by the threatening of the guidance counselor, was an allusion to the God complex many serial killers experience which is one reason why they almost never stop murdering. The way he spoke, and the expressions on his face, were quite chilling in that final scene.
Rather than power corrupting these two, I saw it as a tale of nature > nurture (the parents were shown to be quite normal and not abusive in any way), and that in the end they both have, and will, inevitably be drawn to positions of power in one authoritarian/dysfunctional system (Nazi party obviously, and, say, executive of a large bank or even a politician for the kid) or another where they get to where they did by machiavellian means and are free to exert their wills on other people relatively risk free.

Boy be careful….. you play with fire…. Even he himself knew that it was toxic…. The cat scene really got to me… as if he wanted to relive his glory days…. He talked about the little children being trampled underneath the adults trying to escape the suffocating gas… I can see why many people refer to a Nazi as not being human but a Monster….
    Good review, i enjoyed it

I’m American and I I would literally never say it’s nice to see my fellow Americans making reviews. You might want to do a self check player, that’s not normal, it’s either too nationalist or too race obsessed.

@@johnwhitmer4036 chill dude! I think you are reading way too much into his comment. Nearly all my You Tube friends are American. That's because fewer people over in the UK think about reviewing movies on You Tube. Therefore, it IS nice to see when people from the UK crack on with it. That probably wouldn't be a consideration for someone who comes from the country that has already flooded the market with voices.

Love this film. An underrated gem. From the same Stephen King collection of stories as The Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me.

I am surprised by this oversimplified discussion of power. It should be pretty easy to see in the information age that this is also about the radicalization of youths who have a morbid curiosity about the atrocities of the past and the way staring into the abyss causes the abyss to stare into you. It is a cautionary tale that has only become more relevant with youths seeking out information that is being withheld from them on the internet without any sort of caution or context. Ian McKellen's character wants to move on in a healthy way, but the main character, enticed by an unstable sense of self, presses on because of his own obsession and perhaps a form of sadism he has that he feels he can justify. The takeaway is that the slippery slope of engaging in these drives is inescapable, which is the true horror of the story. McKellen did everything he could to help this boy, but exchange is always two ways, it is the horror of our ability to influence each other and the ways we do and don't control that influence. Showing a teenager who is in the underbelly of the dark web this movie is sort of like letting a kid smoke a cigarette. You might think it a bad idea, but chances are they will think twice before trying another one.

Stephen King is a premier author and a complex and unique storyteller. He winds characters and settings utilizing powerful nuance. King's ability to empower and manipulate language and settings, creates sublime and powerful emotions. The movie reviewer captured the basic story, but without reading the book, it limited his grasp in defining the heart of the characters. The synopsis of this story was just okay.
(My heart breaks for Renfro's short career and life.)

I'm not gonna tell you you're wrong. It's true. I haven't read the book. So I can't really be blamed now can I if the film has missed something? But this is a film review, not a book review.

I thought the scene with Mr French and his "grandpa" was a hidden symbolism because the clothes Mr French had on looked like Hitler Youth uniform. However I looked it up and they had black ties and not red

    Political correctness is killing TH-cam...
You never say the word Holocaust.
You reference Schindler's List instead so people know specifically which event you really mean.
If you can't say what you really mean then what's the point of giving an opinion? 🤔
