  • Why Critics hated Lenny Kravitz music.
Rockstar Lenny Kravitz has had a pretty impressive career staying relevant for nearly 4 decades and selling over 50 million albums worldwide. He’s also branched out into hollywood, appearing in blockbuster films and honestly he looks incredible for his age, given he’s in an industry where alcohol and drugs frequently take their toll. But it wasn’t an easy road for the musician who had to fight tooth and nail to be taken seriously, Not only that but, being mixed race the media, which loves to label people, didn’t know what to ake of him. In todays video, let’s talk about why critics didn’t count themselves a fan of lenny kravitz early in his career
Growing up in both los angeles and new york, Kravitz by the age of 10 was already playing guitar and writing his own songs. His mother Roxie Roker was on the tv show the Jeffersons, while his father Sy Kravitz was an executive at cbs. He would be mixed racee - being half black and half jewish. He would learn classical music and would perform wit hthe california boys choir and even recorded with Zubin Mehta. HBut by the time he attended beverly hills highschool - which was also attended by future guns n’ roses guitarist Slash, actress Gina Gershon and actor Nicolas Cage, Kravitz initially had aspirations of being a session musician, but by the time he graduated from high school he realized he he wanted to become a star in his own right and not go to college. Kravitz’s father agreed to support his son’s aspirations and took the money he set aside for his college fund to book studio time to do some recordings. It was early in his career, Kravitz used the moniker Romeo Blue. Kravitz was a fan of using vintage recording equipment and real instruments in the studio.
It was between the time he graduated high school and the late 80’s Kravitz got numerous offers from record labels, turning all but one of them down. He would tell the kansas city star “they wanted trendy black music, which i hate. They’d say ‘this is too white. You have to get your black base first. Then you can cross over. They want everyone black to get a drum machine and make a funk record. That was a big issue. What i’m doing is black music anyway. Rhythm and blues, rock and roll.” Kravitz would end up signing a deal with virgin records.
In 85 Kravitz would meet his future first wife, Cosby Show star Lisa Bonet, and the two would eventually get married having a daughter, Zoe. . Kravitz would tell the associated press how crazy the media attention was before he even released his first record recalling “being that i was married to her, people were interested in what i was doing. I was on the cover of all these magazines, just because i was married to her. Who is this guy? Adding what if i came to see you because your wife is so and so. If that’s what brings people out, fine. But I’ve got something to say. I’m not interested in being mr. bonet.“”.
It was in 1989 Kravitz released his debut album Let Love Rule, with Kravitz producing the work, writing all the songs, playing almost all the instruments and bonet co-writing two songs. It was at the urging of his label, he dropped the name romeo blue and went back to lenny kravitz. The album was a hit in american and overseas. Kravitz would cite john lennon, bob marley, lou reed and jimi hendrix as the main influences on his debut record. Kravitz would tell the kansas city star “i’m not hip to the way records sound today. All this digital , But some critics didn’t call themselves a fan, with some being especially hard.
One frequent criticism was thatlet love rule was too derivative of 60’s pop, funk and soul, Kravitz wore his influences too much and that he sounded too much like elvis costello
The boston globe would write in 1989 “if you’ve heard anything at all about lenny kravitz, you’ve probably heard he’s tv star lisa bonet’s husband. But kravitz is also a singer/songwriter bandlateder with a just released virgin debut record ‘Let Love Rule’ and when it comes to an artist in his own right, well…he’s lisa bonet’s husband. Ouch..” …adding “There is however one problem. Lenny Kravitz is terrible…He couldn’t sing his way out of a paperbag…” they would add his lyrics are quite trite and that onstage he has a self important attitude.

@@Axolotl_Mischief What's loathesome is you dufuses constantly romanticizing every bygone era as being so much better than "today" like if it was 1994 you wouldn't instead be bitching about how music is dying now and things were so much better in the 60s/70s. Musicians have more independence now than ever due to social media, sites like Soundcloud, Bandcamp, etc. giving them a platform without a label breathing down their necks. Overall it's not necessarily better or worse, it's DIFFERENT. If you seriously can't find music that is worthwhile today then that's a you problem, especially when all kinds of retro styles of music are finding resurgences with the younger generations, so quit being a lazy old cynical fart and get with it lol.

    The year was 1996’
    The event was the H.O.R.D.E
    Festival at oak mountain amphitheater
    In Pelham Alabama
    The line up
    Was Rusted Root Lenny Kravitz
    and the Blues Travelers
Lenny was performing at the time
    He walks off stage
    While the band played on
We was seated about a quarter way up the amphitheater
Directly in front of the stage
All of a sudden the people to the right of us was going crazy
    I asked my buddy
What the hell was going on
He looked over and said I be damn
It’s Lenny Kravitz in the crowd
    I was like
    What the f *** man
    Sure enough it was him
He popped up through a secret tunnel
There was a gentleman setting there by the entrance way in a
    Wheelchair
Lenny finished the song that they where playing
Turned around and handed the gentleman his Flying V guitar
    Gave him a hug
And thanked him for coming to the show
I been a die hard Kravitz fan since
It spoke volumes about the man !
By the way it ranks up there in my top three concerts
Big John didn’t disappoint either a great show

It was one thing that cheered the living hell out of me, both because it was 100% true rock and roll and because Slash played on that song. It was a nice start to a period of time which would become musically way richer due to the subsequent meteoric rise in popularity of grunge.

Of course I'd always been aware of LK from some of the hits and the LB coverage (I had a huge crush on her growing up) but hadn't really ever looked into his music. I was working in a music store when Baptism came out and we gave it a spin and I thought it was pretty good, actually got me to buy a cheap drum kit to go along with my guitars and bass. I went into the catalogue, a bit varied, certainly some good stuff to be found, I appreciated the variety, the throw back, the attempts to work ahead, but I could hear the criticisms, as well. But, I do count myself as a fan, when he's on, he's very good, and he has a unique voice and is a good student of music. I got pretty annoyed when I heard Strut, though. The songs were groovin but I was aghast at how cut and paste they felt, I mean, literally cut and paste, like "why bother to record another chorus, just cut, slide, drop, done, next." Totally ruined what could've been fun songs. He's often been a little too simplistic, a little too formulaic, and it's a real shame because he can write, he can put together a good recording, he has his own vocal sound but I feel like he holds himself back and it's pretty frustrating. But has he collected a solid bunch of work in his 30+ years-- yes, but could he have been so much more-- yes to that, too. I mean, I wouldn't mind having his catalog, but all the missed opportunities...
