  • Off The Edge is a skiing and hang gliding movie produced and directed by Michael Firth and featuring myself and Jeff Campbell. It was shot in the South Island of New Zealand in 1973-74. It was nominated for an Academy Award in the Feature Documentary category. We got to go to the awards and I met Sylvester Stallone (sort of... I was at the urinal next to him).

Me and the boys used to always watch the old VHS the search for adventure of Jeff and Blair and we just go to Jeff and Blair’s tape and we loved how Jeff and Blair kind of looked like Simon and Garfunkel. And this is my first time seeing this version of it and I’m freaking stoked it’s like Jeff and Blair 1.5 bonus edition.

Darrell sent this to me Blair.
I thought it was a wonderful film. Magic sound track. Such skinny long skiis, Vuarnets!, and the flimsiest hanggliders I've ever seen. And you were over the edge, great you made it home. Fearless and ahead of your time!

I saw this at somewhere in Auckland when it was new, I had a friend who was one of the early hang glider pilots, he unfortunately died in an accident soon after.
Living in Australia for over forty years, I have never forgotten it , it is so spectacular, was telling my partner about it the other day. Going to watch it again right now !

Nice one Blair! An important movie to me. Got to ski and climb in those places too, and I grew up with some of the pioneers of hang-gliding in New Zealand, down south.

I just finished watching. Man that was a good movie. Those four cameramen had to be ahead of the stars all the time with big 35mm film cameras. That must have taken some skill and talent. Bravo.

Now, there's a classic piece of NZ mountain history! I first saw this as a keen 16 year old, sitting amongst a bunch of mouldy climbers late one night in the back room of the Mt Cook visitors centre in 1978. It had a profound influence on me, getting me onto skis and under hang gliders (also starting on a Seagull 3). I own a copy of the film, and while it looks dated now, I still love it as a piece of nostalgia.
Thanks so much for putting this online. The gentle liberties taken with the topography, the sunset in the east over Mt Wakefield, the accidental cameo of Bill Atkinson etc. just add to the delight. Wonderful!!!

I saw this in 1978 too at age 16. I always wanted to get to the Pioneer hut. Amazing that is hangs on to that peak. Happy days.

@@mrparlanejxtra Sadly, that version of Pioneer Hut is long gone, and its replacement is further down the glacier. I agree, a 2020 remake of the movie would be fantastic. Cheers!

Oh my word - what a coincidence. My family were just talking about this the other day - my brother was reminding us that he had been in a movie and it was this. So we'd been looking for it (unsuccessfully) and now you've posted it. Greetings from the family with the red Quicksilver (that our friend John broke in the clip of flights in Auckland). Thank you SO much for putting this up for us all to enjoy. It really should have won an award - such an excellent production - the filming, the sound, the song and the SCENERY - magnificent.

How about another trip back to NZ when the chaos is over to make another movie? John Hanlon is still here somewhere but now he sounds like NZ's equivalent to Tom Waits. We have not enough from him either. Just after this gig I paid fifty cents to hear him play at the Te Awamutu College Hall one afternoon.

I just made a comment on another video, that NZ old movies were not available on streaming channels, I included this one, and what do you know... Here it is, thank you, now just wish all the other movies I mentioned were available, somewhere, like sleeping dogs, bad blood, Utu, etc, thanks for the upload👍

I agree mate, I don't know, Government policies, Rogernomicks, GST, MMP, it's not been the same from the late 70s onwards, , I miss the days in the 70s, when Me and my Brother would run around Otara creeks Eeling, and just exploring, having fun, go to school on frosty days with no shoes, no one cared back then ha, made us a hard generation.
