Obviously the presenter doesn't know much about Quokkas. Quokkas are not a type of Wallaby, they are a member of a different Genus to wallabies, that being Setonix, of which the Quokka, Setonix brachyurus, is the only extant species in that Genus. The closest Quokkas are to Wallabies is that most Wallaby species as well as Kangaroos, Wallaroos and Paddymelons as well as Quokkas are members of the Subfamily:Macropodinae of Family:Macropodidae. Apart from Quokkas being marsupials with rather large hind feet they have very little in common with Wallabies. Wallabies tend to live either solo or pairs, rarely forming larger groups or mobs, and most Wallaby species tend to live in dense scrub or maybe on rocky outcrops, probably as protection against predation. Quokkas tend to live in large groups or mobs and live in more open bush, especially at Rottnest as there are no real thick scrub on the small windswept island. Quokkas also have an ability to climb trees, although their agility and dexterity in this endeavour is questionable.
Rottnest is a fairly bleak place, sandy soils and low shrubbery. No trees as such and definitely no forests. Fresh water is very limited and mainly found in the swampy areas(most water for human consumption is desalinated sea water). Very few people live permanently on the island,as it is mainly a tourist destination during the nicer months of the year. No private vehicles only bicycles and a bus or two to take visitors to the extreme ends of the island. I suppose l should add it has great beaches and a fantastic bay for mooring boats.

My daughter is a scout leader. Her scout name is Quacka. I don't knew if your scout groups name staff after animals. People think they can pet them like a cat or dog but they are a wild animal. They don't carry disease and a band aid is normaly enough.
Tonia, your videos are very good. Also, your pronunciations are fine. BTW, it's very un-Australian to criticize someone for petty reasons. I apologise on behalf of Australia if some idiots from my country have upset you. You're a lovely person. Please ignore the trolls! Luv Dave (from Sydney, Australia)
wow I just heard a yankee girl say the F word.. You are getting close to being an Aussie good on ya. You do what makes you happy, and be proud be a yank. We understand every word you say. because we are all one big family. WE TOLERATE yOU.
There is a difference between mispronouncing something and a regional dialect or accent creating a different pronunciation. I think the way you pronounce kookaburra falls into the former, while the way you pronounce emu falls into the latter. American English dictionary can probably clarify how the words should be pronounced from an American English perspective. Regardless, of what I think, or whether you mispronounce/pronounce differently some words, you do you and that keeps me coming back. Regarding Rottnest Island, or Rotto, as us locals refer to it,climate, hot and dry summers, cold and wet winters and everything in between. Nights get quite chilly, not a big island, with wind coming off the water, which acts like an evaporative cooler in the warmer months and brings arctic chills in the cooler months. Not cold like Illinois but I remember missing the boat back and spending one summer night shivering in the dunes, rather painfully after a warm day. December or January. Rotto doesn’t really have any surface fresh water, it’s quite hash, unless it rains so the quokkas primarily get their water from the plants that they eat.
Your cats are lovely and they want to be with you because they love you , never mind about the grumpy buggers . If they don't like your channel then they can bugger off , simple .
Hello Tonia, forget about the haters of your cats and the way you talk, I believe if they dont like your content, they need not watch it. As far as I'm aware, it is not in the constitution of Australia that all Australians need to watch your videos, but it shouldbe, you're awesome! So they can go on some other channel. You have some loyal subscribers who enjoy your videos. I myself don't really like cats, but find that your cats add to your videos by interrupting you, closing your screen, and wanting attention, that just adds to the videos. I was reading a few comments, and despite your 7 and a half minute, fully justified rant, there are still some who comment about the way you say Emu, for example. People are unreal sometimes, some simple tasks are difficult for some people. As for Quakkas, I believe they have poor eyesight and may bite when being fed, but they dont have any diseases that i know of.
Americans tend to pronounce every letter. One could say they speak properly. English skip whole parts of words and are very fluid in the pronunciation of letters. (I’m not American)
Will find you a link to Aussie girl who does break down of our different accents, she has done great one about Aussie swear words, we bloody swear a lot, even on TV, this is why our TV shows did not pass US censorship board, there girls will crack you up, also how different Kiwi English is to Aussie English have internal version of English.
I just want you to know, we don't hate cats here. We have as many pet cats as you guys that are loved and part of the family. When they say invasive species, it's because there are so many feral cats living in the wild here now. They have adapted to almost every environment. They are born, live, and die wild, numbers are increasing and they are evolving in size (I mean really large cats). Our eco system wasn't designed for a predator like this and they have wiped out many smaller species of mammals and reptiles already, with many more endangered. It's a very real ecological problem. I just wanted to clarify, sorry for rambling on. ✌❤
@@taniaPBear I completely understand that. And it’s really unfortunate that you have that type of issue. I know a lot of Aussies have cats. I think I just meant that using the word invasive sounds weird to my American brain for cats 😂
What is wrong with people??!! Would they like someone walking into their house & telling them what to do? No. So why do it to someone else... & when one does a video from home, they're inviting viewers into their home, via the internet. It's as if they walked in the front door. If they think they're so good their crap don't stink, then they can go start their own channel & put up with others telling them what to do. Ok, my rant over lol I love your cats & tough if someone else doesn't. Your channel your way.. ok, maybe one more rant lol She had info I didn't know.. & I'm Australian, lived in West Australia in the 70's, & went to Rotto (Rottnest Island) quite a few times. The Quokkas are adorable. I'd say they only bite if threatened, harrassed etc.. which pretty much any wild animal would do. U keep being u, & I hope your cool daughter is doing well.. she reminds me of my girls, though they're older lol. Oh & don't worry about the lingo (language) issue. Most Aussies have a chuckle, & may correct pronunciation simply to teach. If they come from nastiness, arrogance etc.. tell them to "chuck a na-na (tantrum)" elsewhere. Never let these turkeys get u down. Sending u love from Queensland (u said that fine, either way) x
While cats are basically evil, I respect your right as a pet owner to be oppressed by your cat overlords (grin). Keep up the good work, greetings from Australia, glad you like our quokkas.
Very good video on Quokkas. They have some at the Perth Zoo and in SW Western Australia. If you want to catch a cool animal video, watch How Horses save humans from snakebites on the Veritasium channel. You'll meet a guy with the most dangerous job in Australia.
Don't let 'em get to you, cats will be cats, and they need to be left alone, unless they need pats, or food etc.. Rottnesr island is just south of Perth Western aus, they get snow in winter. Emu and Kookaburra as well as Uiuru are aboriginal words that's why it's not ayers Rock anymore, always was Uluru and sacred to the original Aussies, not aussie english, you decide if american english respects that or not? We've all been told off before.
Unfortunately feral cats here have decimated the native wildlife. They kill 2 billion native animals per year. :( A quokka would have to feel threatened or provoked to bite. Lol I keep thinking my cat is mewing, but its one of yours.
Ignore those drongos, if they do not like cats they can watch something else. Kookaburra (Aboriginal Language) in some Aboriginal cultures means good luck. Emu is only found in Australia therefore the way we say it is correct. Names of anything have origins and therefore if they pronounce something in the Original Country then endeavouring to say it correctly is respectful. You do not want to say EMU correctly stop reacting to things outside of the US so you do not have to say words as per the Natives.
It's your show and if your cats are in it, big deal. I don't like cats but they are only on my T V not sitting beside me. It is estimated that cats in Australia kill 3 billion native birds reptiles and mammals per year. I have no problem with hearing presenters in your videos with different accents. My issue is that they often present false information or pictures. I care about accuracy not accents. Beautiful birds here and don't forget the peacock jumping spider. Love your work.
they bite because they are wild animals end not pets people are asked Not TO TOUCH THEM AND THEY GET BITTEN. ALSO, people are told not to feed them, but they do all sort of shit like chips and other human food which makes them sick and can kill them!
From oz. Your cats are fine and I lost my heart to a Burmese. I am concerned that they are killers of wildlife so so hope their movements are restricted dawn to dusk.
Quokkas prefer the cold end of Australia. They can also be found in Tasmania. She didn’t show one photo of a Quokka smiling but as you said she ins’t Australian. I have never heard of a Quokka biting anyone but most of us know there is no touching a Quokka. They don’t know they should be scared of humans. We have just as many cat lovers here as you do. We also have a massive feral cat population and a wild dog population. People just dump them and they multiply fast. They grow large and kill farmers stock. Again some humans need an IQ test before being allowed to own a pet. We have 4 special needs dogs that keep us poor. Our children grew up with cats and dogs. My yard was a zoo. I didn’t know I was allergic to cats until my children left home. Before that I was treated as a severe asthmatic. Now I don’t have asthma and I visit my daughter’s cats.

@@DaveOz-mx5oh Oh wow you’re so close!!
Hi tonia Vaughan from Australia nice to see you i 2ould like to say is there your cats there home and space its your channel you shouldn't have to change a thing i love the cats and if they dont like certain things then dont watch it my beautiful girlfriend is English and they do say certain things the same as the u.s anyway you go girl i enjoy your videos
@@VaughanKoch-yb9wd Thank you 🥰
@ToniaElkins your welcome Tonia I like you your so upfront and honest
Eemyou... not Eemoo.
That’s what I love about you Tonia you keep it real and honest I found the video interesting and informative to all the naysayer out there. If you can’t say something interesting ,nice and informative then the intelligent thing is to say nothing! at all. But I guess that’s what you’re lacking intelligence.
Nike is the Greek goddess of victory and the way you say her name is the original way. I don't mind what grunting sounds we make in our efforts to communicate... Celebrating diversity is what makes life interesting... (I still haven't made it to the quokkas yet.)
@@markkairial I agree lol
They have poor eyesight and people get bitten while feeding them so its not their fault
@@markflint2629 Ahh makes sense
I"m glad you cut the video when that women started talking about global warming the islands are not going under water same as great barrier reef it is not dying it is thriving
Love your show❤
My daughter is a scout leader. Her scout name is Quacka. I don't knew if your scout groups name staff after animals.
People think they can pet them like a cat or dog but they are a wild animal. They don't carry disease and a band aid is normaly enough.
wow, I'm from Perth, I learnt stuff here☮️😎🇭🇲
Tonia, your videos are very good. Also, your pronunciations are fine. BTW, it's very un-Australian to criticize someone for petty reasons. I apologise on behalf of Australia if some idiots from my country have upset you. You're a lovely person. Please ignore the trolls! Luv Dave (from Sydney, Australia)
If he bites you, just tub a bit of dirt on it, remind yourself your a dumb dumb and continue your day!😂
wow I just heard a yankee girl say the F word.. You are getting close to being an Aussie good on ya. You do what makes you happy, and be proud be a yank. We understand every word you say. because we are all one big family. WE TOLERATE yOU.
Talk how you think kiddo and don't talk how others say, but if you talk Australian your on the right path ❤
Rotto is only 25 mins away from me!
I'm Australian, but from now on I'm calling emus "just a fucking bird!" I love that!
@@labradorsandwhich Lmao!! 😂
Don't bother with the angry trolls. You just be you. 😊❤
❤️💩🖤🤘
Americans tend to pronounce every letter. One could say they speak properly. English skip whole parts of words and are very fluid in the pronunciation of letters. (I’m not American)
Will find you a link to Aussie girl who does break down of our different accents, she has done great one about Aussie swear words, we bloody swear a lot, even on TV, this is why our TV shows did not pass US censorship board, there girls will crack you up, also how different Kiwi English is to Aussie English have internal version of English.
Quokka only bites for defensive reason. Otherwise they are really friendly..... Not all like selfies.
Ok, my rant over lol
I love your cats & tough if someone else doesn't. Your channel your way.. ok, maybe one more rant lol
She had info I didn't know..
I think it's bad that a lot of people eat cats. Although, they do say that they are tender and tasty. 😮😮😮😮
While cats are basically evil, I respect your right as a pet owner to be oppressed by your cat overlords (grin). Keep up the good work, greetings from Australia, glad you like our quokkas.
They bite because they're Australian & it's the law
aS SIMPSON SAID one day English is AS SHE IS SPOKE
Very good video on Quokkas. They have some at the Perth Zoo and in SW Western Australia. If you want to catch a cool animal video, watch How Horses save humans from snakebites on the Veritasium channel. You'll meet a guy with the most dangerous job in Australia.
Relax lady, just be you. It is enough
A quokka would have to feel threatened or provoked to bite.
The peacock jumping spider! One of my favorites. I saw one the other day, so beautiful. (Mornington Pen, Vic)
Your channel, your rules, those who don't like it , chewy on your boot. 😊
they bite because they are wild animals end not pets people are asked Not TO TOUCH THEM AND THEY GET BITTEN.
Stand your ground
Quokkas are NOT found in Tasmania.
American English is an oxymoron.
thanks for letting us know that your cats run your life and you just lost another viewer
Doofus.
Bye bye. 🤘😼
