    I sometimes forget how casually brilliant chess masters' memories are , i would never have guessed that these moves from one random blitz game in a tournament weeks ago were all straight from Eric's memory

      @@clarencefujita5721 Yeah he recreated it from memory, but not while filming. He recreated it from memory in the study before filming, which is why he has the notation on the right from the start.

      I don't think memory is a key factor here. My memory sucks, but I can still recreate games that were played a long time ago.

    I just imagine you screaming "Oh no! MY PAWN!" In a room full of people quietly playing chess tournament.. Then my imagination took me to the spot where everyone leaves their table and come to see what Eric came up with, since they are all very familiar with how "Oh no my piece" sounds..

    There's a clever in between move that allows the bishop to capture at 8:15.
    After Bxd4, b4, Qa3 threatening a discover attack on the opponents queen

      After Qa3, white has Bc1 which hits the queen. Black has to move the queen to a4 and white can capture the bishop.

      and that's even more dangerous coz after Bc1 and Qxc3, I think white has to go for the queen trade, and which will eventually lead to the dark square bishop of black to attack both rooks from the c3 square, winning 2 pawns + 1 more exchange in the entire process !!

    The Stafford is so dubious that your opponent didn't go into it because he felt bad you blundered so soon in the game 😂
    I wish he went into it, sounds like you may have gotten a 10 move win out of it!

    Thanks for the recap Eric! Also notable is after 9. Re1 5:26, Stockfish 14 recommends g5! Very instructive move, as the Knight on d3 is blocking the d2 pawn and the c1 bishop, and the f3 bishop is an open target for the pawn, so black has free reign to give a flurry of attacks on the opponents Kingside.

    Seems brave for Eric to ever play the stafford in serious play. Have to imagine any player would prepare for it by drawing his name alone.

    I’ve had a lot of tournament experience, and this has happened to me a lot. Even if a stronger player plays the opening badly they still have more experience so they know position better, and that can set the boundaries of rating, it’s not all about skill.

    10:43 Bc3 seems to be the better try since it defends the rook with tempo. White's position looks better than the Rd1 option.

    I could see the stafford working in any tournament except english speaking tournaments with gen z or millenials, this is due to your many videos about the stafford gambit. Luckly, I live in Brazil, therefore most people don't speak english and won't see your videos, also most portuguese speaking youtubers don't cover the stafford gambit so I might have a shot at playing it in some tournaments.

    I have definitely delayed ideas from the opening once declined and transposed them in the middle game for a win it can be quite flexible if you are not afraid to wait

    After white plays Bd2, can't Bxd4 b4 be met with Qa3? Pins the pawn to the queen. I haven't checked with the computer and I know its a rapid game but interesting idea. Maybe it gives too much kingside initiative to white.

    Eric, @ the question whether you hung a pawn in the opening -- Bronstein says in 200 Open Games that he got the same question (except it was a bishop) after his game with Rojahn in the 1956 Olympiad. :-)

    in the minute 8:15 eric said he couldnt take d4 cause after b4 he was losing a piece but after Qa3 hes pinning that pawn so maybe taking d4 was the best move

    At 8:17, after the bishop moves, couldn't you take the pawn and then go Qa3? It re-pins the pawn to the queen. If the white bishop moves back, it forces a queen trade but you also get a rook fork in the end. I can't calculate all the possibilities of course, but the ones I can look at seem survivable as well. Thoughts?

    10:25 after bishop takes on d4, b4 wouldn't it be even better to take on f2 with check? Because after Queen or King takes back you still get the knight but you win an extra pawn.
