IAEA side event: Nuclear security during decommissioning - International perspectives

  • On 21 September 2021, The KCL Nuclear Security Programme (NSCP) hosted a virtual panel discussion, as a side event to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) annual conference. It focused on how to maintain security during the nuclear decommissioning process, ensuring that it remains proportionate and effective as potential risk and threats change.
    This is becoming a priority area for the international community with a greater number of nuclear facilities requiring decommissioning. Speakers included academic experts and international practitioners who shared insights on key considerations and potential challenges.
    The discussion was chaired by Professor Christopher Hobbs, Director of the King’s Institute for Applied Security Studies (KIASS) and introduced by Angus Girling Programme Manager, Global Nuclear Security Programme Nuclear Directorate at UK Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).
    Speakers included:
    - Mr Paul Tonks, Head of Security and Resilience, Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA)
    - Mr Ben Whittard, Security and Resilience Director, Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS)
    - Mrs Kateryna Pavlova, Head of International Cooperation Department, State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management
    - Mr Steven Dhlomo, Senior Manager, South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa)
