    Thank you for the time you took to show us different aspects of our job. We all have a unique way of tree cutting, but staying focused and making deliberate safe cuts along with planning is something the average person would miss and what we make look easy, sometimes, no most times is a challenge. Everyone makes a mistake but with good plan of action and making deliberate cuts they can be minimized

    Really appreciate you taking the time to slow down the parts that for you are second nature to show the rest of us the art and years of skill involved. Nothing better than watching someone who's a master at their craft and being invited to understand the background and processes involved. I would love to see further explanation showing how you actually set up for a spur climb, with the Ddrt as backup, and the speedline, and then how you move all of that down the tree for each cut. Seems like magic when edited out (but I'm sure there's still magic to it!) Appreciate your videos! Congrats on the little one!

    I agree with Robert Wood don’t be afraid to make the long boring videos I am not here to learn my job I come here to learn tricks that will make my job easier. We all have little tricks to add and August you have so many tricks it’s hard to tell whether you’re a magician or not. If we all add our little tricks it will improve the safety of this community and will all get home to our loved ones at night. One for all and all for one thanks August.

    Thanks for sharing this August, it was a little comment by you in another vid (the one where you explained why you don't wanna rig branches for a speedline at a spot on the branch that's too-far out from the trunk in a way that'd invite the thing to 'butt into' the line), you showed great integrity in attributing the principle to Reg (even though I've no doubt you'd have learned that technique on your own, considering the volume of this that you do!) and it was that mere mention that let me know of his existence and, now a couple weeks later, I can't even quantify how much more knowledgeable I am for having "attended Reg Coates U.", it's such a wealth of info thanks again for cluing me into him (and, obviously, for your content- am not finished with your library yet but am a good chunk through it, sooo much to be learned by vicariously "going on the job" with you - there's something inherently amazing about this, youtube in-general for such things as this, because I could go spend a summer as a groundsman (have in the past!) solely to learn but in doing so I wouldn't learn, in an entire summer, the principles&techniques I could learn in an afternoon watching you or Reg's channels, literally more in a day than in a summer with a local group and I know "but you can only learn so much by video, you gotta get out there!" and true that's fair enough but, for something like arboriculture, there is so much principle/technique *specifics* that one's gotta know to be efficient before "getting out there", am so glad to have had you guys' videos to really help school me and would take you guys' videos + solo-practice over simply buying gear then relying on on-job-learning - there's great crews that'd teach you a ton, obviously working on *your* crew would be a helluvan experience, but the average crew that I've seen isn't even familiar with / routinely setting speedlines, I have to wonder how much I'd actually learn....the things I've gotta "learn" are things only I can learn by myself in the tree IE movement/posture/etc, the rest is factual/objective techniques/practices/etc that you guys outline beautifully, I am still just blown away / in awe at these ropes & what they can withstand, and at knots&friction-hitches (I could never tie a knot before, my mind was just blown seeing all the things you can do with a rope!!!)

    • @AugustHunicke
      @AugustHunicke  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I'd say you are very much tuned in and sponging stuff up indeed by the details in your writing, especially the deeper observations of thankfulness/awakeness. Yes, most crews won't teach you much. I had to start my own company to begin REALLY learning. But there was no TH-cam back then. What a blessing it is for people to surf YT for vocational input.

    as always, amazing rigging. great patience for perfection! A model for safety.

  • @gschgvt2956
    @gschgvt2956 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I’ll often mix conventional rigging with speedlining on pieces that are too large to speedline on their own and restricted from a safe landing zone conventionally. If a top is too big - drop it, let it run a little, slide down 30’ and hook it on the speedline. The original rigging line will work as a speed control line at that point as well.

    • @kivaswander5537
      @kivaswander5537 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      GSCHG VT hey man thanks for that tip, why 30’ and not just 10’ ?

    • @gschgvt2956
      @gschgvt2956 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Kiva Swander Arbitrary number my mind came up with while writing when thinking how much a big top usually runs. By all means keep it as short as possible.
      Edit: I’ve also set up a 3:1 to pull the top back up after letting it run too far. In extreme cases I’ll piece out the top/limb like it’s a separate tree while it hangs on the rigging rope.

    • @kivaswander5537

    Thankyou August and Reg for all the time you have spent with this subject. I agree with you about one handing saws, if our economy could afford the cost of time for two handing saws a lot would be different. I feel there is a disconnect when we cannot see the full impact of our regulation. Often the contractor being left to just figure out how to comply, not unlike engineers being told to adhere to emissions regulation written without a solution. We all know the troubles with new saw tech that leaves us paying to replace or repair failed attempts at engineering a solution. Be deliberate, be present, don’t make the f@#$ it cut! Be responsible for the actions of the self, at least try right? Thanks for bringing this stuff to the table, be well

    Such rich content!
    "Do deliberate tree work or don't do tree work at all"
    "its about puttin' things in ya favah"
    All that editing and extra production of the videos seems like it must be a lot of extra work ----- but thanks a lot for going to the trouble to show what you are thinking in the situations, etc.
    I don't know if I will ever use a speedline or not, but the info here is so rich for any kind of tree work it seems... even for the common home-owner.
    .............. how about doing some (longer?) "boring" videos where you do show all the planning and preliminary steps.
    but regardless, thanks again.

    • @Actual7
      @Actual7 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Like the raw content stuff travor does. Would be superb. Just straight through. Some neurology study, that i can't find, said that watching first person perspective helps assimilate data and the brain actually processes the information like it's first hand. Regardless of that, being stuck outside my comfort zone without proper coaching i resort to what i see here and it honestly works. I work full days and 'study' for a couple hours and the studying is showing bigger gains than rushing out production. Thanks for what you do man.

    I'll use that "Deliberate Tree Work" if you don't mind. I come from the days when you got yelled at for not using your top handle saw one handed so it's second nature to me now, I try and set a good example for the new boys ... My wrist and thumbs are pretty buggered now though and I think all that one handed use probably hasn't helped, especially with the old 020's..

      Deese's Trees : truth!! I also like the line; “do you know where your bar tip is?” I used to frame house long ago and usually pinned the guard on my Skilsaw (OSHA no no) but I always knew where my blade was and didn’t have to worry about the guard causing a bind-up on compound-miter hip/val cut.
