- My Makeup Declutter TIps & Tricks for 2015 - my makeup collection/stash needs a clean out and purge, so I got rid of a LOT of high end and drugstore lipsticks, blushes, highlighters, palettes, & more this time around! I was inspired by the KonMari method, although this is not precisely her method!

Things to think about when decluttering your makeup:
Would I buy this again?
Don’t think about what you spent on it - if you’re not using it at all, what does it matter if it was expensive or not? The money is already gone & wasted.
Figure out what your “bad makeup shopping habits” are. I have bought way too many brightly colored lip glosses & glitters/pigments, which I NEVER wear. After I got rid of them, I now know that no matter how tempting it might be, it would be a waste.
Don’t worry about “running out” - odds are, you won’t. If you actually do, then you can go to the store and buy it as you need it.
If need be, just keep one of each shade of a product that you would actually wear. Don’t worry about owning “1 orange lipstick” just for the sake of having one if you KNOW that you will never, ever wear it.

I've recently gone cruelty free. It's has been a huge learning curve for me in terms of finding out what companies don't test on animals. I started with makeup, then went into HBC and finally household cleaning. I decided I wanted to become a conscientious consumer. I recycle. I think about what I'm buying and how it will affect the environment afterwards.
I think this is amazing! We vote for the world we want every time we spend $1. Let's make it a great one :)
+lenastockton Ive recently done this as well make up wise :) one brand I fell in love with because of this is BH cosmetics. they are only online but everything I have bought is AMAZING and they are really low priced
+lenastockton I am also in the process of moving to using cruelty free cosmetics and skincare / haircare etc at the moment. It's amazing how many companies still test on animals considering there are alternatives and I am surprised at the number of companies who chose to test on animals to sell to the Chinese market.

Things that have helped me are, bringing possible dupes to the store and swatching them. Using what I buy as soon as I buy it. Unsubscribe to email lists. Canceling subscription boxes-as fun as they are I don't like most of the stuff. Not watching haul, new reviews, and some monthly favorites TH-cam videos. There are certain youtubers that make me want to buy everything so I only watch makeup tutorials from them and avoid the other videos. I watch mostly de cluttering, project pan, and favorites or reviews from people who do project pan and de cluttering videos.
My collection is actually in a good place but I've been working on it for 2 years (My collection fits in three drawers in an Alex 5 drawer unit-I totally measure my collection by how many drawers it is. I started at a very full 5 drawers.). But after watching your video I know there are things I've been hanging on to that need to go that stress me out because I'm not using them. I loooooved this video.
+Carla M I'm glad I'm not alone too! there is a whole community who do projects around using up makeup they already have. Check out Amber F, prettypistol86, and strwberrysweet. There are tons more but those are some of my favorites. :)
+Shelley Salmond I think that's such a good point: stressing over things we are not using. We see, we like, we buy, we try...and that's it. Then you think, "Gee, I really should use that, but then I need to use this one also..." Then you begin to feel anxious because you want something new and know you probably shouldn't be picking up anything for the next year (at least in my case lol). So we stress. I think decluttering is a good solution to this. I should feel happy when I look at my stash, not anything else!

I decided to limit my makeup to only what can fit into my acrylic vanity organizer unit from Amazon.com www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00O9SPPS6?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00 If it can't fit into the unit, then I don't need it. The only exception to this rule is when I switch out certain seasonal products e.g when changing summer foundation/masks/lip products for the winter formulations, etc. I worked hard this year to either use up or pass along all those samples that come with purchases and so forth and I am back on track to keeping a strictly curated cosmetic collection. There are no superfluous items permitted in my makeup drawer.

This is the most sensible discussion of 'why declutter' I have seen. Good for you. Who was it who said something like knowing thyself is the first step to happiness. Congratulations!
I always ask myself if I really need the product. (Makeup or not)
Recently, I also have been not buying any makeup for a month or two or even more but throughout that time I make a list of products that I really want or need and then after a while I will go out makeup shopping and get the things that I really need off of that list.

ive been doing that too. and then like after a week or two i look at my list and realize i dont even want it all either. lol much cheaper for me. but also like...i thk in my head am i gonna be like meh about this and declutter it next month? then lets not waste our time on it. and by we apparently i mean me, myself, and i. we all like makeup hahahaha

some recent life events have me feeling more than a little out of control, but I have started doing this and I have to say it really does feel amazing. the blessing of being able to afford things becomes such a burden when you weigh down your life with stuff, and decluttering and down-sizing is such a load off my mind. and even more wonderful when you can pass along or donate the things we can't use! love this video, very motivating :)

This was great Jessica! Loved it and I have done recently a makeup and whole house purge. So much to donate to benefit others who are in need instead of having things sitting around collecting dust. Plus, having 2 kids you accumulate a lot. I do have the habit of going through clothes every six months and putting donations aside but this time it was the entire house. Nice to just keep things tidy and teach my 7 year old to give things away to someone who cannot afford the toys that are just sitting and having her enjoy more space in her room rather than it looking cluttered. She suggested that we keep a big paper bag under her desk to put any of her toys that she may not want to keep for herself to give to other children who would enjoy them more. She's such a sweetheart! I love that she wants to keep it up and that it's not a one time thing. I don't want my kids growing up being so attached to material things, and to appreciate the things they have and enjoy them rather than collect and accumulate clutter.
I literally gasped the minute this video started because seriously, this makeup and this hair is on point. It's seriously breathtaking, I could not stop thinking about it the entire video. Wow
while decluttering you can just depot the shades you really like and place them in a magnet palette. and give away/sell the rest of the shades in the brand palettes.
it saves so much space on the makeup shelf/in the drawers )) and all the eyeshadows that you actually use are in a single palette.
I also added a blush and a compact powder in my magnet palette. it's making makeup application much faster in the morning.
My husband for the first time watched and appreciated a beauty vlogger's video! You are sensible!

Those are her declutters and its the same stuff as in this video and it just seems like less because she is doing small amounts at time but that's everything.

Good for you Jess! I try to go through my makeup periodically to either switch up what I'm using and remind myself of things I've forgotten about, and then I usually end up putting things in a bag to give away to friends that I don't use. I have a massive bag full of things to give away right now and it feels so awesome!
I'm on a no-buy for the rest of the year (except for the Covergirl Star Wars collection, I can't pass that up) and I'm actually really excited about it! Usually I go into no buys going "oh no but this is coming out and this and this" and right now I'm like "so what? I have everything I need"

you've inspired me! I literally stopped the video half way and pulled things that I have had in the back of my mind that I should get rid of. I have a horrible habit of buying things when they go on sale. If it's on sale it gives me the excuse if you will. Obviously sometimes it works out and it's a great product. Other times not so much. Thanks for the inspiration! Now I have to find someone who wants all of my decluttered stuff.
this was SO awesome to watch, i feel the same way as you did.. emotionally attached to stuff i never use and then it hurts my heart to think how much i spent on some stuff and never touch it. i did a HUGE cleanout at the beginning of the year and i'm realizing i need to do another one and just rid myself of the stuff that i don't ever use or don't grab when i open my drawers, cause i know at the end of the day it feels amazing to declutter and have more room.

You know what? I was so nervous about all the holiday palettes coming out because I already own so many and just knew I'd want more! Then I saw a sneak preview of all of the big companies' holiday sets and realized that I already own palettes that have basically all of the same colors that will be in the new ones...Yeah they're cute and pretty and oh so allureing, but I am proud to say that I just DON'T NEED THEM...And keeping/having only the makeup that you find stunning and wonderful is so cool, because like you said, you open your drawer and there are all your favorites and it can just make you so happy! TH-cam, while being such a positive and awakening soo many peoples' passion for makeup, has also spurned a really ugly wave/trend of consumerism that has damn near reached a frenzy. I just think that if we really put a lot of thought into what we want/like/need, and not just purchasing because of hype, we could all do a lot better....Great video!

This is a fantastic video to include along with the standard declutter vids. I've found myself having to ask those same questions about why I bought things, and why I was keeping them in my collection, and those answers were absolutely the ones that made it easy to let go of a lot of stuff. I was keeping stuff that I'd gotten free, even though they were formulas I couldn't use (regular kohl eyeliners) or just didn't like (every lip gloss ever). I might go back through things now and ask if they're loved enough to repurchase, and that'll get me down to just favorites - you're right about the excitement of liking everything you see.

I watched your declutter series and it inspired me so much that for the past month I've been going through all my stuff and I got rid of so much! I really am a makeup/beauty products addict and I really have to change my habits, I was doing a lot of that which you talk about, saying that someone talks about how great a product is, and I immediately want to buy it too so I can say I have it in my collection. It's a very dangerous habit and I'm fighting to lose it and your vídeos have helped a lot, so thank you! :)
Owning too much makeup definitely gives me anxiety. Whenever I go through a period of accumulating new makeup items I feel very overwhelmed. Eyeshadow palettes are the worst because I'll probably never use them up. I know what I like and what things work for me so i'm trying to appreciate the small collection that I have instead of constantly purchasing because of the hype. Loved the video! You talked about people who just have a makeup bag of makeup and that's it. Could you do a video on what would be in your makeup bag if you weren't a TH-camrs beauty blogger?? :)
last October I started to decluttwr minimalize and use up my beauty products. I used to have $345 of makeup and 160 products ... I am down to $171 of makeup and 100 products !! I feel accomplished and project pan and declutters are so useful. keep up the good work it's easier than you think
Just a heads up for all of you ladies, if you are decluttering your make-up collection considering donating your new/barely-swatched make-up to homeless or women shelters. I just did this and they were so thrilled to get a make-up donation.

Back in the 70's and 80's, there were several companies that did "Color Matching" services for men and women. A lot of this had to do with "Seasons". (everyone would say "What Season are you?") You were given swatches to find your best colors for skin/hair/makeup/clothes/accessories. It was a way to sensibly buy your wardrobe, and not give in to "well that looked good in the store but it would never work with my skin/hair tones". You didn't end up wasting your budget on failures, and even more, your time on bringing stuff back, etc. I think this generation needs to find that system again.
+Patricia Niedrich I've done that... I'm an Autumn, lol. The issue I have is finding appropriate color in clothing, especially in the spring and summer, and since I live in the deep south it's warm weather almost year round. Almost everything is cool toned and neither white or black as neutrals are a good option for me.
+waymire01 Clothes are mostly cool toned due to most of the population not being redheads and warm-toned people. (like Autumn folks) You just have to buy extras of things when you find them. I think your "white" are tones of Ivory to Beige, and instead of black you might do a dark olive green to a dark blackish brown. As well, things get muted when we get older and turn grey, and lose our natural "colors". But at least you know that you are an Autumn. I am a Spring. Winter tones are a little too severe on me, but again, I am not a pastel person by any means. Kind of in between the 2.

I have never done that before, but i heard about it and i am probably winter. But even by not knowing what season i am, if you open my closet you are going to find a LOT of dark blues, emeralds, and wine reds. (And also black grey and white). I think people naturally pick what they look good in anyway. As for makeup, you cant always try it in the store (or if you buy online) though

One of the benefits of having a student budget is that I have no choice but to have a small makeup collection; absolutely all the makeup products I own, including my brushes and sponge, fits in my Hello Kitty tin lunchbox :) It makes it quick and easy to get ready in the morning because I only have one foundation, one concealer, one powder, one blush to work with. The hardest part is choosing a lip colour and how to do my eyeshadow, and even then, I only have a couple of each type of product so I don't have much to choose from.
I stop myself all the time from buying things I know I won't use and constantly compare it to my collection. I'm doing a project pan right now (I think you would be interested in that!) and it's really helping par down my collection and keep it not huge but not teeny. Good job on decluttering!!
I read this book because of your clothes video!! And you really helped me out by recommending the book my husband just got stationed at a new base and we had to move into a new home and this book and your video of going through clothes has made packing even better for me! And even when I put our clothes into the new closet, I got rid of more because they didn't spark joy
I'm glad you posted this, because I think even if makeup isn't our job but we just love it, we get in these same bad habits without realizing it. I know I'm guilty of it. I've bought stuff just because it was either unique or cool looking, or pretty and I didn't have it but I either never use it or it doesn't work for me.
Glitters are my weakness. They're so pretty, but as a 30 year old Stay at home mom seriously why do I need so much glitter when I don't use it or have a need for me personally.
This was a very inspirational video and it helps to motivate me to further my own makeup and clothing de-cluttering process. Thank you for that! On another note, your makeup has been looking flawless and radiant ever since your honeymoon videos. Please do a tutorial on your recent everyday makeup. This was an inspiring video and made me subscribe! I'm just getting into expanding my makeup collection and had a bad case of "youtube made me buy it" lol, where I was getting something just because my fave gurus recommended it. This made me think about my makeup wearing habits and go through my collection to see what I don't actually use and get it out of my life!!!

Jess, I'm not a TH-camr like you are and I don't have makeup for the purpose of review like you do. Though I do have a small channel, and you really are "goals", but I digress. I am also an emotional shopper and this video has inspired me to declutter the makeup I do have. I don't open my drawers and think,"I love everything in here", and maybe loving and wanting to use what I have is a small part of my emotional shopping problem. I am new to makeup by many standards so I am still in pursuit of a lot of those "Holy Grail" products, which has also fueled the shopping. A wonderful friend has offered to help me work my way through my "stash", maybe I'll film it and upload it to my little slice of TH-cam heaven. I applaud your honesty and your insight on your makeup collection. I need to purge my stashes also and this is especially important to me since I am "combining " my home with my sweetie. I am a serious lipstick hoarder, and like you, I tend to hang onto colors that I never wear because it's the only orange in my collection. You've inspired me to not only go through my makeup collection, but also my clothing! Time to make some tough cuts.

This video is awesome, thank you :) I used to have a ton of makeup like youtuber's have but got rid of all but essential items. I find with me decluttering makeup is so liberating. So everytime I use up a product, I get 2 new ones. That's my way of rewarding myself.

You are a stronger woman than I am Jessica! I'm like a make-up hoarder and I honestly can't bring myself to get rid of any of mine. However, if one of my daughters comes to me and they need an eyeliner, mascara, etc...I will give them one out of my stash, but I'm not ready to go through and give any of it up yet. I have talked myself out of buying more by thinking about what I already have that I hardly use and that honestly helps.

Great video! I saw the title "Goodbye to 70% of my makeup!" and I knew I had to watch, even though I thought it might be painful lol. I saw your decluttering clothes video where you spoke about the book and I requested it from my library. Just received it this week and I find it very motivating. I am currently reading "Living Well, Spending Less" by Ruth Soukup, which is a great read for those of us trying to simplify our lives and helps to analyze our neverending need for THINGS, whatever they may be. This is perfect for the makeup expert or the newbie! Thank you for posting this. I am just starting with my collection and I don't want to get to the point where I feel overwhelmed because I have too much to choose from, which honestly is a lot easier to get to than I thought. Even though I have a small collection I have started using your tips and tricks :)

This is great, I don't have tons of make-up but I have a good collection going and the other day I realized there's things I bought months ago that I haven't used. Since then I decided to make a everyday "go-to" bag for products I have a lot of. For instance I have a lot of eyeshadows/lippies so I decided to add things to my bag that I don't use often or at all that way I can start using it and not just filling space with it.

I'm on a budget so don't buy a lot but would love to review as a job! I love how humble you are and still do a lot of drugstore reviews. My goal is to one day have enough makeup to declutter!

I wish you could have filmed the whole thought process of getting rid of some of ur makeup. I got rid of a lot of my clothes from your last video. This video didn't inspire me to do the same. I'm still very happy for you that you were able to get rid of so much stuff so you can truly enjoy what you have.

Considering that she had already done those recently, I just thought it would be interesting to understand why now she got rid of palettes she had specifically thought she actually needed. Watching someone go through the process I think helps us to understand those same reasonings we may have
I love this video! After watching it i have decluttered all my makeup because I have a terrible habit of liking one shade in a particular range and then feeling the need to but every single colour, which is completely not necessary. I have already ordered the book you linked! Amazing video!
I have so much eyeshadow and makeup that is empty but I don't get rid of it and you inspired me too because I only ever wear mascara and eyeshadow because that's what makes me feel good thank you for teaching me that! Ily
I started a process very similar to this last August, I purged 80% of my collection for lipsticks and glosses I kept my favorite one for each color family and purge the rest. So instead of having 10 different nude lipsticks I only have one that suits my skin tone and that I love.I gave away the rest to my sisters and friends.I used this same method in my entire home. My house is now so much easier to breath in and I spend ALOT less money on things I would new use.
This is just the inspiration I need right now! I'm leaving for my freshman year of college next week and I have to cut down my clothes and beauty products to what I want to take with me. Hopefully, it will help me manage my space better for living in a little dorm
this video has inspired me to go through my collection and declutter. I definitely don't have as big of a collection as some TH-camrs or big time makeup lovers but it's way too much for me. like you I have some palettes I've used once or not at all. thanks for sharing your tips!
