- Why Archaludon is Better Than Hisuian Goodra Competitively
Competitive Pokemon
With the release of Gen 9 Indigo Disk DLC, new Pokemon such as Archaludon was released into the Indigo Disk OU DLC meta game. Despite sharing the same type of Steel and Dragon as Hisuian Goodra and a worse special defense, it seems to a lot of people that this is a fantastic Pokemon and perhaps even better than what H-Goodra offered as a steel and dragon type Pokemon. A: Well surprise its me playing as the opponent as well and having Pokemon faint every 5 seconds isn't as fun as seeing the Pokemon do something in the battle for some time, which is why the gameplay seems like the opponent is braindead. Although I have taken some feedback and have tried to make it more interesting as possible without making the Pokemon faint every 5 seconds for hopefully better entertainment.

In Legends Arceus it boosted both defenses and evasion. They could have Made it a Cosmic power

Low special defense is honestly one of the easiest stats to deal with. Look at Tangrowth for example. Assault Vest is just that amazing. And not to mention being steel/dragon with so many resists to most special moves already? It works itself out easily so the other stats can go nuts.
Especially in Bridge Dragons case because it doesn't NEED stat boosting moves as Electro-Shot/Meteor Beam boost SpA on their charge turn by default with the added bonus of ES skipping that charge turn all together if you happen to be in rain
I've thought it strange that we have items that boost every stat except Defense. Choice items for the offensive stats and Assault Vest for Sp Def. Why not an item that does the exact same thing as Assault Vest but for Defense?
I guess because there are more mon with stupid physical defence than there are special def and on the flip side most of those that could make use of it like Blissey are SO low that it wouldn't really matter. like boosting a base def of 10 by 1.5 is kinda pointless.
it'd be a nice option to have sure but then you also have to worry about making phys walls that already exist TOO tanky. No one is going to enjoy it when every match is just even more stall tactics.@@midnightbloomofeorzea7182

@@golemofwill4728 I'd argue they should also change Freeze status to Frostbite, have it halve Sp Att like it did in Legends Arceus.
Make shelter 8 pp, nerf it to raise the defence by 1, but it recovers 50% of your hp
The fact that it doesn't raise evasion is probably *good* but is honestly a baffling decision
@@adampozzobon5193probably cos evasion is meant to be based on dodging an attack and shelling up is not dodging it's blocking the attack directly

Agree Shelter needs a buff, either by,
1. Restoring health
2. Or granting protect
3. Or plus 3 defense
However 50 percent health would be to OP

that's an instant ban to ubers. you ppl have no idea how to balance mons, honestly wouldn't be surprised if you think chi-yu and chien-pao are balanced.
It honestly comes down to Arch having a better ability (stamina) and Electro Shot
Both are powerful in their own ways but i think archaludon has a more offensive presence which has to do with it's movepool
It does hurt to see the superior forme of my favorite Pokemon ever be outdone by a new Steel/Dragon type in most areas as I have high hopes the stats can be redistributed properly to better suit it movepool of great attacking moves. As historically Goodra never really had been ranked in OU before only to see a new mon outdo it despite a Hisuian Form being gifted to Goodra is does bring a tear to my eye. Won't stop me from trying to use H-Goodra in OU even if it may be throwing for trying to win with my favorites!
HGoodra is a much better special wall/Assault Vest Abuser so there's definitely still very much a niche for it I think in the right teams!
I'm currently using Assault Vest, with Sap Sipper, Knock Off, Earthquake, Ice Beam and Draco Meteor. Does really well vs a ton of the meta I think!
@@VinceLovesToast Lowkey I think HGoodra could be a sleeper pick as a counter to Serperior since with Sap Sipper it has to switch in against it and Serperior has no hope of hitting HGoodra, with an Assault Vest, super effectively or KOing it without Tera typing to Fighting or Ground, which are not good Tera types to be since it needs Fire the most. HGoodra can KO with really whatever coverage move hits Serperior supereffectively since Serperior will never invest in bulk, or use Dragon Tail to force it out.
This is something Archuladon cannot replicate due to the ass Special Defense it has.
@EidinAegis Ya 100%. I feel h goodra does well into Raging Bolt, Rillaboom, etc. It's also really good at baiting out ground/dragon types before hard punishing them with ice beam (think Gliscor, Roaring Moon, Garchomp, Landorus, etc)
Even if you don't wanna commit to reading their switch in, knock off will net you progress.
Unfortunately these sets don't have too much firepower themselves without sacrificing bulk, but I think the niche is very real regardless
For H-Goodra they should either give it recover, rework shelter to give it recovery (Make it a 5PP/8PP move with 33% Recovery and increases defense by 2 stages), or replace its HA Gooey for Regenerator and give it a pivot move (U-Turn or Flip Turn) to make it a defensive pivot or they could rework shelter to where it switches goodra out but the next pokemon that switches in gets a +1 in defense.
shelter needs to be a protect clone that raises defense.

@@Adir-Yosef are you crazy? protect + setup move all in 1 move is an instant ban. the whole balancing around set-up moves is that it makes you vulnerable, if you remove that then there is literally no downside, just click buttons and win the game.

besides what's the point of a move called shelter if it's not an upgraded protect.
so having a protect + harden in one move for H-goodra would be a great method to shift it farther into the tank role
besides it will still have all othder downsides that protects haves. failure chance at repet uses, 5 PP the works.
@@Adir-Yosef last time I checked burning bulwark didn't give you any boosts, nor does baneful bunker. You can predict these moves and choose not to attack: switching your Mon to be in a positioning advantage, entry point for wallbreaker, or setup opportunity. Punishing protect, meaning there is a risk involved. With your move, it's just a win-win situation with absolutely no drawback.
Goodra will have +1 defense increase at all times, since it is a prority move. Goodra actually has the bulk to survive multiple hits, so once it has that +1 defense it can easily stack up defenses to become extremely hard to kill. And by the time goodra has been dealt with, you would have lost like 2 mons.

I actually use them both in the dlc. Archaludon with Electro Shot and Body Press, Combined with Hisuian Goodra using Rain Dance. It also has access to substitute, counter, life dew, acid spray, so although you could find better support mon they still can work pretty well together.
Thank you for this video about who works better competitively I'll still probably be using h goodra on my team as he's a special pokemon to me and I'm glad something like this happened I love listening to others talking about what's the current meta for pokemon I'm not a good competitive player myself but I love watching the teams people make revolving around certain mons
Hisuian Goodra still is my favorite since Shell Armor deals with Wicked Blow/Surging Strikes and becomes the best to hide behind screens as a dummy T H I C C C C C C wall.
This is the first cross gen evolution that gets a 600 base stat total hopefully other pokemon will get this too maybe even pokemon that aren't dragon type

TBF, Druddigon’s 485 BST is much lower than Duralodon’s 535 (yes really) so more likely a 540-550 BST one, but still

@@agentblackbird9435That's purely an American community requirement. The Japanese community (the one game freak talks to regularly) only cares that it isn't a legendary, and has 600 BST. Arch is the first pokemon to satisfy those conditions, that doesn't have a 3 stage line, thus proving they aren't considered requirements after all, as opposed to a balancing choice.
@unkarsthug4429 Regardless, pseudo-legendary is a purely fan-made term that has no bearings on what Game Freak does. Though that just means I agree that the only real conditions are not being a legendary and having exactly 600 BST, with every other condition being subject to change. They could buff Lapras and give it 600 BST, and it would count as a pseudo in my book.
H goodra really just needs a way to boost its SpA and then it could be viable. How does a pokemon who’s main strength is SpD and SpA get curse, shelter and acid armor as its only form of stat increasing?
It would be pretty boring to have it boots its SpA and just be an Archaludon sidegrade, I think it could be much more fun if it had better recovery and defensive utility to function as a true wall

Both are great mons but imo H-Goodra is still better as an overall wall while Archaludon is an amazing physical wall. But they're both pretty balanced at the same time because if Archaludon had better sp.def it would be a completely different monster, same goes if H-Goodra had better recovery than rest

I was battling an Archaludon online and it was pretty easily chipped down by my uninvested Toedscruel. My H-Goodra on the other hand wouldn’t have let the same happen and tanked everything sent at it before dishing back more damage! You made some very good points about support though! Merry Christmas!
Yeah I feel like Archaludon suffers alot if there's no rain or if you cant electro shot things in one hit. Despite its ability and stats, it doesn't last long once hit.
I guess y'all are just letting Archaludon get hit by Earth Powers and Moonblasts, it's not suppossed to tank special hits in the same way Great Tusk also isn't. It does its job as a physical wall far better than Goodra does as a special

Just give both goodra recover, their both snails.
Hoodra's defenses are understated especially with Assault Vest, although Archaludon barely edges it out bc of ability and better special move, to which Hoodra's are practically nonexistent. Archaludon just has a little more love from GameFreak, if Hoodra had a recovery move or a more relevant ability it would be a different story. However, the point about EV speccing SpDef for Archaludon could be said the same for Hoodra, except Hoodra already has a respectable Def stat (could also use the EVs on HP instead). One last point you could make for Archaludon though is that his ability along with the base physical defense fare better to offset the fighting and ground weaknesses, since most fighting/ground STAB are from physical users.
Make shelter be like king’s shield except raise defence if an opponent hits goodra with an attack

Another thing Archaludon has going for it is the move snarl. Which even though it doesn't do a lot of damage and it makes it special defense skyrocket especially if used against a psychic or ghost type

I wouldn't underestimate H Goodra in VGC. A few shelters and tera water and no physical attacker can break it... plus it has huge sdef! Give it leftovers for recovery and spam body press for W

archaludon has already given better perfomances than hisuian goodra in online tournaments. Hisuian Goodra is not a good pokemon. Archaludon otherwise found a place in rain teams in vgc.
Sap sipper Hoodra (Hisuian Goodra) was the perfect amoongus counter when it was in UU and he’s my personal goat…

Idk about you but I genuinely think that hisuian goodra might be better than archaludon in current meta, I think having the perfect mix of coverage moves plus a huge spdef stat makes it a perfect assault vest pokemon that is able to deal with almost any special attacker in the meta 1 on 1, not to mention it has dragon tail to prevent a sweep, and sap sipper for shutting down both spore and leaf storm from serperior. Archaludon on the other hand kind of gets outclassed by other faster special attackers like valiant, raging bolt, walking wake, etc. Obviously it's still a very good mon but I feel like Goodra in general brings more to a team.
Archaledon is another example of “if you ever have to use your sturdy you have failed” club.
That being Pokémon that are clearly built to withstand many hits with their bulk but still get Sturdy as an ability, which only ever does something, if your bulk failed completely

Stamina is literally ridiculous: it actively punishes attacks that don’t oko it with what is effectively curse with body press, and can boost its special attack while dealing heavy damage. The more its defense raises, the less likely it dies in one hit, and the harder body press is. It’s a catch 22
I tried swapping to Archaludon for my team and it was much worse.
I want an Assault Vest Special Wall with that nice steel dragon typing, and sap sipper is a really great ability vs mons like Serperior, Rillaboom and other Grass types.
Utility like Knock Off, Ice Beam, Earthquake, etc are also very nice for the current meta!

I don't think either is better than the other, they do different things and are good in their own ways. Hisuian goodra is lot more annoying to remove thanks to a great spec def and good def stats paired with a fantastic defensive typing, while archaludon excels at removing high value threats, especially with power herb turning arc shot into a one turn move.
Maybe you mentioned this already, but steel and dragon's only weaknesses are fighting and ground. Types who's strongest moves tend to be physical, which just so happens to be Archaludon's better defense stat. Just imagine if they had given it access to Amnesia or Eerie Impulse. It'd be nearly indestructible.

I love Goodra, but no one thought "Oh he is better than Archaludon because he has no weak stat compared to Archaludon's low special defense", because everybody knows about how broken Assault Vest is and how there's no physical assault vest for Goodra. (which would have made him broken)
I get this is just your opinion but I think you are a lil biased. goodra can fill multiple roles very well he can go on any team and just work, he has weather ball for every weather condition, and I feel like gooey has yet to see its power be tapped into. And what about sap sipper, he becomes immune to all grass type and spore moves. he's a hard counter to Rillaboom, wellspring Ogerpon, amoogus, meowscarada, etc and can hit hard physically too.
Why not both ? 😅 I say both are good choice and I won’t mind getting both

I know 105 attack isn't trash, like special Pult works despite having only 100 SpA, but if Archaludon had like 105 SpD instead of Atk, would be like 10x better for it

archuladon is an infinitely more likeable mon. It's a cool menacing robot godzilla, with sharp edges and complex design. It also has an aspect of goofiness to it: turning into a literal bridge when it uses electro-shot. It actually looks like a steel dragon. h-goodra is based off an ugly forgettable pseudo legend (at least h-goodra looks better than base goodra and baxcaliber). H-Goodra looks like a barney and friends character, primarily comprising of ugly round blobs and its 'friendly' apperance. When i first saw h-goodra I could've never guessed it was steel/dragon. so overall, h-goodra is cringe.

Archaludon is worse when it comes to just tanking but it outputs far more damage than goodra. Yeah H-goodra doesnt die but its just free set up fodder compared to arch which has some of the highest damage outputs in general,not even including rain

Goodra is made dor vgc the real metagame. Sap sipper = spore counter. Resists almost anything and has good offensive coverage.

Curse is a setup move and it has gyro ball...what more would you need for h goodra? What it lacks is a healing technique. Hisuian goodra with curse and trick room would be gonzo and broken. Body press, curse, Gyro ball and a physical dragon move there we go. Hisuian Goodra is totally on par with Archaludon. I am so tired of this speed oriented garbage meta. Pokemon needs to give us a pokemon with the ability to set up trick room on entry and then this meta can be flipped on its head. Excessive pokemon being special attack oriented sucks and yes Shell armor or sap sipper is better. Hisuian goodra has better overall defenses. I would say for sure the best true tank in the game are Hydrapple and Garganacl.
