The volume pedal in the effects loop works quite well, I got the JHS Black Amp box which is smaller, and has a regular pot on it which is easier than trying to keep a volume pedal treadle in place. It's the only way I can play my DSL100 in my apartment.
Ive been on a mission for a couple of weeks trying to decide which attenuator to get... (I really want the Captor X but i want a dial attenuator, not a switch) thanks for this video, RJ.
I use the two notes torpedo captor. It is a dummy load and it has either a pass through or a set -20db attenuation port. It has almost zero coloration on your tone and it comes with the wall of sound program. One of the best pieces of gear I've bought.
@@michael_caz_nyc no real discernable tonal change I can notice. Either by ear or by feel. Put it this way, I liked the first one I bought so much that I bought a second. One 8 ohm, one 16. I have not tried the captor x. The only feature I would be interested in would be the additional attenuation step.
Hello Man, thanks for the video , ı m looking for something but ı m note sure how can i searc for it, i hope you can help me with that, i m planşng to buy a head and wanna connect it to sound card , also i ve already checked that captor products but i just need like budget thing, any advise , bybthe way i wont buy a cab thanks
The Bugera PS-1 is a passive attenuator that offers 4,8, or16ohm hook-ups and is rated for 100watts. Also boasts a low impedance cab simulated out plus a high impedance out [no cab sim] but has its own volume control. It has the exact design and components of the Jett City "Jettenuator" designed by Mike Soldano {of Soldano amp fame}. Sweetwater has them discounted at $49.00 until they are sold out. It works very well imho. Xmas presents? Only drawback is the attenuation starts out at 50%, so your 100watter is down to 50watts but it is adjustable from there to zero.
I’ve heard reports from people that those things are 1) not very reliable, and 2) known to suck guitar tone. I don’t know how accurate either of those are, but my experience with Behringer gear over the years has proven at the the first one of those points to be plausible.
@@RobertWJackson Cutting it down to 1/4 or below noticeably takes some off the highs. It's a matter of gain staging it all together. Reliability gets a bad rap because it smells like smoke/burning when trying to hard limit a 100watter until the resisters/machining oil burns off. Remember that it snubs the amps output to 50% as soon as you hook it up. I run my PRS HDRX-20 at 6-7 on both treble and bass channels {same as a Plexi} run simultaneously together with the PS-1 at about 1/4 to 1/3 up. Doesn't even get warm. I add a bit of presence/treble to adjust. It's then about as loud as my Marshall DSL-1 at the 1/10 of one watt setting. A lot of guys mess up and mistakenly run a guitar cable or unknowingly mis-match the impedance which can burn up the attenuator/amp or both. It's an exact Soldano designed replica using the same spec components as the Jettenuator. Sorry about your experience with Behringer. All my amps from them{bass} are over 10yrs old and some pedals {guitar} closer to 20yrs still work fine. Box mixer also 10+yrs. All amps were gigged at least 4 times a month {sometimes six or more} for about 8yrs straight.
I have a 65 Princeton Reverb reissue (which I love) . . . however I can only put the Volume on 2 in my tiny NYC apartment. Is there a device that "Will not Damage my Amp" - and allow me to put the volume on 3.5 or 4? - I'm looking at the Two Notes Captor X and the Fryette Power Station PS-2 . . . Any input is greatly appreciated.
As much as I love Two Notes products, I’m that instance I would go with the Fryette Power Station for that application (unless you just have to have the virtual cabs in the Captor X). The Captor X, I believe, will only attenuate at -20dB and -38dB, whereas the Power Station will attenuate from 0-100% and still comes with some tone shaping options to accommodate for any high-end signal loss that attenuators are known for. You might also check out some of the Weber attenuators, as well as the Two Notes Torpedo Reload. Good luck dude!

I'm late but it depends on where they wire the master volume in. Most amps just have the main volume knob near the input which would affect the tone because it doesn't push the tubes or the opamps. Some expensive amps have a master volume near the output which is normally a resistive attenuator like the silver box he showed, but some brands forego the input volume knob label and wire the "master" for the input volume
Can i use Bugera PS1 in a Peavey 6505? I'm asking because Peavey is 120 watts amplifier and Ps1 only gives 100w. Ihave a Marshall 1960A cab to match my Peavey
That additional 20 watts in the 6505 might prevent it from attenuating all the way down, but it should work. Just make sure you’re using the 16-ohm version.
@@RobertWJackson thank you for your time.. I will try it out. I was suspecting it could work just like you said but never to muck asking!! Thanks again. Votes for many success.
@@hardknocc922 yes I did. It's got pros and cons.. It works well with the 6505 however you can't push the amp to hard and definitely not at maximum because the PS1 will get extremely hot and it cannot handle so much power and you can even damage your amp. For recording purposes it get the job done, but you will have always sound in your cab, so it's not a solution if you want to play without any noise. Since the price tag of this PS1 is affordable I think it's good but of course it's not the perfect tool. But it definitely can make your sound a lot more quiet that without it.
Hey Robert! After the Ask RGD you did on cable quality, I thought that perhaps you could do one on coil cables and if they ruin your tone because I have used a couple expensive ones and they sound pretty good. Thanks! Nice Vids As Always.
Many thanks Rob 🤘 from Mr. Austin knight lol. Keep the great content coming. Got a little researching to do. 60w 5150 2x12 a mesa mark 5 35w. and a carvin v3 100w are my current tube amps so see if the boss or even Weber makes one that will cover all 3.

Those are pretty awesome. The Wall Of Sound alone is worth the cost. I didn’t realize it was also a load box though. I’ll have to look into that.
Absolutely. You can use it like you described your Koch box. No cabinet. Amp into the captor into your interface.

I have heard rumors of how the weber mass works kinda in its own way. Idk they are costly n there are tiny amps that a pretty cool
The Koch does have attenuation of 5, 3 or 1%. Just plug into the monitor out.
I've been reading on forums that the ox box attenuator isn't that good. Not sure if true or not.
Great video! I might also mention if folks are looking to buy their first tube amp, some have built in attenuation/power settings.
Wasn't Tom Shultz one of the first to offer this kind of product? Power soak if I remember correctly
Yessir, I believe he was. Those are still pretty popular on the used market, I believe.
Had a Weber attn - pretty much hacked off the higher freq, the more the attn. Had both Koch models that worked quite well.
The Koch models attenuate well, but the cab sims on those units is GARBAGE.
Aka, The Brown Sound? Is this similar to the variac that Eddie Van Halen used in his earlier works?
Similar, yes. I think he actually used a Tom Scholz power soak.
Do you still need an attenator on an amp with a master volume?
It doesn’t hurt. Crank up that master volume and listen to the difference in tone, other than the volume.
master volume will give you gain but it will not be able to create that compression and saturation goodness of truly having the tubes heavy lifting.
I'm late but it depends on where they wire the master volume in. Most amps just have the main volume knob near the input which would affect the tone because it doesn't push the tubes or the opamps. Tone king amplifiers has the iron man attenuator and it’s supposed to be really good.
Very helpful advice,..!! Cool,man..!
