      I'm with you; La Grange needs to eliminate parking on that side of Main St, at least in the 2 blocks between 1st and Cedar. I was looking at Google street/satellite view to see if there's any space behind the buildings to put in a parking lot. Unfortunately, some of the buildings are historical and can't be torn down, but there's an insurance agency in what looks like a former bank that has a parking lot with space for at least 10-15 cars. Insurance agencies usually don't have a lot of traffic, so the city should work out a deal with the agency to take over maintenance of the lot and make it public parking. They can put up signage reserving a set number of spaces for agency staff and customers.

      A good idea, considering the road seems designed for very low speeds, anyway, so there is really no way to clear the tracks other than a u-turn. Perhaps, a compromise could be a flashing 'NO RIGHT TURN--TRAIN APPROACHING' instead of an early arm coming down since there is enough time for several cars going straight to continue clearing the intersection. Or, just eliminate parking, at least in that block. Since the track's position is off-center, that would be the best compromise.

    • @ammagee
      @ammagee ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That is 100% a solution here. The signals need to trigger much earlier. If you look at the car, it turns right legally 'and just then' the signals activate. But they're driving toward the train in a 20-25MPH zone at most, and in an environment like that short downtown block probably slower. So now they're headed toward a train going the same speed they are, that's on trajectory to hit the next intersection at the same time. Their options are all illegal: back up in a road lane, drive into the oncoming lane, or make a u-turn not at an intersection... There was no legal solution.

    • @ammagee
      @ammagee ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes! I'm so tired of seeing people blame this driver when, 1. They made a legal right hand turn when there were no lights or gates or horns, and 2. They were immediately confronted with an oncoming train who then just sounded it's horn and bell. 3. There is no lane width in which to reside because of the parking, and 4., The oncoming train is coming at about the same speed of the car where they're going to meet up at the next intersection of escape. I don't understand how this is legal because if the car speeds it's breaking the law and if the car stops and backs up, it's technically breaking the law and there's no space for the car to escape without breaking the law or making a U-turn if it has the turning radius to do so.

    • @ammagee

    In many towns, cities, metro areas, etc., the activation of traffic signals also triggers brightly lit signs prohibiting left turns/right turns, etc. Seeing as how a crossing gate system could be categorized as a traffic signal, last minute turns such as these could be prevented by such a system. The major flaw I see here is the timing of the crossing gate activation is not soon enough to prevent the dumbest of drivers from making a questionable decision. The activation should have been at least a quarter mile out. Of course the poor decisions continue, as the driver fails to turn around in the ample street space. The flaw in that regard is the City Of Lagrange has not restricted parking in an area midway down the block to allow for emergency excursions off the right-of-way, as other cities/towns do at busy crossings where traffic may back up due to a signal just beyond the crossing.

    Here in New Zealand we have cycle paths that run alongside railway tracks with traffic lights at the crossings to help cyclists get across the roads. If a train trips the circuit while the light is already green for a cyclist then a yellow to red arrow comes on telling cyclists not to turn to cross the train tracks. Shortly after this the level crossing activates. So what they could have at the intersection here is some yellow and red arrow lights that activate while the train is still a way out to tell cars not to turn into the street without stopping through traffic unnecessarily early.
    With the crossing not being active when the car turned and nowhere for them to go after they had turned, the fault here is poor road layout rather than anything that driver did. Sure, they could have gone into the wrong lane, but I'd argue that's not much safer since someone could easily turn into the street coming the other way since that crossing has no alarms and there's plenty of room for a small car to drive alongside a train on the other side.
    But really the best solution is either make it one-way heading west or remove the parking on the eastbound side.

    I'm on team "blame the bad road design." Based on StreetView, it looks like these two blocks (the one fully visible on camera, and the one the camera is situated on) have the lanes marked for Eastbound (the camera is facing East) traffic to simply share the lane with... oncoming trains. This could also have happened if the driver had been driving Eastbound from earlier along this road, since there are no Xing signals or signs on this street itself (only the cross streets, and several of them have only Xing signs with no signal). No road should ever be designed for any vehicle to share a lane with oncoming traffic of any kind, and there's also no markings on the road indicating the need to move leftwards to continue in that direction (which, viewing it from the top, is the way to go). We shouldn't be designing roads that rely on "make a last-minute U-turn or swerve in front of oncoming traffic to avoid colliding with it."

    I have to say, I'm not sure what the car driver could have done. They had no way of knowing a train was coming when they turned into the street, and after that there just wasn't enough room for them with the train on one side and the parked car on the other. They could have tried a fast reverse, which is not easy with cars and people about, or crossed in front of the train and potentially into traffic coming the other way. I don't think it's the train driver's fault either - I doubt they could have stopped in time. The accident is the fault of poor street design - either it should be one way, or there should be no parking that side of the road, or the barriers should be activated earlier.

    Engineers should stop trying to compensate for bad road design by expecting travelers to possess unreasonably high levels of skill or attentiveness.
    Here specifically, safety could be improved by removing parking on the one side and by adjusting the timing of the lights. There may also be other solutions, such as making the road one-way (but here I'm just guessing and I haven't done any actual research to know if it's truly appropriate in this case).
    In general, the vast majority of all traffic accidents in the USA have poor road design as a contributing factor. Some evidence for this comes from how accidents are often repeatedly occur in certain specific locations, while being relatively rare in other locations, even when total traffic volumes are the same in both places. Further evidence comes from comparing accident statistics before and after various road redesigns across the county. While bad road design is rarely, if ever, the sole factor in accidents where it is as least somewhat of a factor (the root cause of an accident is typically bad road design plus something else, such as driver inattention), traffic safety researchers have nevertheless already objectively demonstrated that by redesigning roads we could in many many places, reduce the number of accidents by 50% or more, while also making the accidents that still happen less serious.
    Strong Towns has much discussion of both transportation safety and municipal economics (including the costs of road maintenance) in their podcasts, TH-cam videos, and various social media posts. They argue at length that one of the best ways to help make modern towns and cities significantly more prosperous is to rethink how we design and maintain roads, along with rethinking related issues such as zoning (which greatly influences where roads and public transportation need to go, and also influences how walkable cities are.)
    Again, my main point is simply that engineers should stop trying to compensate for bad road design by expecting travelers to possess unreasonably high levels of skill or attentiveness. The good news is that many engineers have already gotten this message, and in more recent years, we are seeing new roads designs that are more forgiving of driver error.

      @@redstonerelic I understand your point of view.
      In situations like this, I've seen the traffic lights and the railroad lights & gates controlled by a layered system where the traffic box is overridden by the railroad's box when a train comes. Makes the odd road/railroad crossing much safer.
      Granted, it would cost the city a bit more to add and then maintain traffic lights. It would, however, cut the number of car vs train incidents.
      That short length of the road isn't wide enough for two parking lanes, two driving lanes, and the train. CSX tried to re-route traffic through an alternate route that bypassed LaGrange several years ago, unfortunately they quickly determined that the alternate route couldn't handle the uptick in traffic if they tried to completely by-pass the town without some VERY pricey expansions/modifications. Like 300 million dollars, pricey. The rail line through LaGrange actually pre-dates the town itself by a couple of years (1820's if I remember rightly) and thus the town would legally have to assume the costs of any alterations to the right-of-way. The downtown area of LaGrange is also their Historic District, and many of the shops and buildings are very close to 200 years old now, and some are in the state's Historic Register, and would be VERY expensive to try to move or alter. The town has also started to monetize the railroad/street-running, and has built viewing platforms at the end of town for photographers and tourists to watch the trains. Conveniently located right next to a few cafe's, shops, and diners, of course.

    In April, 1973, a munitions train bound for 'Nam exploded in the rail yard just far enough away that it didn't level Roseville, CA, which is separated from the main rail line over Donner summit by a two-way street. The explosions were strong enough to rattle our windows 35 miles away.

    If they won't make it one way or delete some parking couldn't there be an early warning system with warning lights so when a train is within say 2 miles of town people know to clear out? Just sayin'.

    I’m not sure why the train didn’t just proceed. This would have freed the car in much less time. It didn’t look like there was contact between the car and train.

    They need to make that section of La Grange a pedestrian-only road or re-route the train line so it doesn't go through the town

    • @vishnu79
      @vishnu79 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The rail line predates the town, so legally cannot be forced to move. The town would have to pay for the re-route, which CSX looked at years ago, and determined that it would cost about 300 million (give or take) to move the rail line and the marshalling yard (you can't see it but it's right around the bend in the tracks in this camera's view) that is at the end of the town. As it is, they've re-routed as much traffic onto alternate routes as they can. About 20 years ago, when I moved to Cincinnati from Louisville (near LaGrange) there were 10-15 trains a day through LaGrange. Now it's maybe 2-3.
      The problem is likely the same now as it was back when CSX started looking at by-passing LaGrange entirely. City Council doesn't want to lose tax revenues from the businesses along Main Street. Business owners don't want to lose the potential traffic flow from the streetside parking, and no-one can legally force the railroad to do anything since they have prior ownership of the land rights to the right-of-way (and incidentally, the street) through town. Alternately, the town doesn't want to pay the 300 million to move the railroad. Of course, in the 1820-30's traffic wasn't a problem, but now between the politicians and the merchants, no-one's going to do much to change things. As for the railroad, between the low amount of train traffic and the very slow speed restrictions, when the occasional bump does happen in LaGrange, all they have to do is slap some paint on the newest dent on their steel leviathans and deal with a slight delay on an already low-traffic sub, which doesn't cost them enough to make it worthwhile to entirely by-pass the town.
