I would never compare Chevy Chase to Cary Grant. They are nothing alike. The closest actor in this day and age that reminds me of Cary Grant is George Clooney. That being said, Cary Grant is head and shoulders above all other actors, past, present or future. He carried himself with such aplumb and dignity. I loved his movies and watch them every chance I get. He is my all time favorite actor.

I saw Cary Grant in Carmel, with this daughter, shopping in front of a wonderful shoe store on Ocean Ave.
He was just a regular guy who was very handsome. You can see I remember this very well. Who wouldn’t? I stayed calm, didn’t bother him and went about my business. A fun memory for me to this very day! Carol from California

It is a sign of a great actor when you can do comedy and drama. He was the best despite his off screen weirdness. His love for his daughter was a great gift for both of them.

Dear Cat, Most of the fans of movies from The Golden Age of Movies are dead. The morons living as humans today can't identify great movies from that time. How would they know who was the star in Rin Tin Tin films? Cheetah was a big matinee idol who was Idolized by millions, as were his co-stars. Asta appeared with his name above the title, several times. There was that pretty girl who rode her horse in that Roddy McDowell movie. Hard to believe that the two best roles for an actress, really Iconic roles, were about women living in the American South. The female star of each movie was awarded the Oscar for Best Actress. She wasn't even an American; she was an immigrant. Her immigrant husband was also an emigres who made movies in Hollywood about people who lived in Denmark. Do you have any clues about the movies these stars starred in? Or even these names of these actors? Cary Grant himself did one famous movie with a jungle cat, Cat. Which one? Don't confuse this with that other movie featuring Jungle Redd.

I think having Jennifer truly redeemed him and brought him to find the love and happiness he always craved. His was truly a very sad early childhood story. He made the best out of life. Thanks for the brief account of Cary Grant's life. On the surface, it seemed he had a perfect trip as an adult, popular, great roles, many romances. I was glad to see he overcame childhood scars to have fulfilling life. One story i heard years ago said all i needed to hear about how Cary was thought of in Hollywood at that time & presumably, throughout his career: There was a giant Christmas Party sometime in the 50s at MGM, & Cary hadn't had a film in awhile. There is an amazing photo of that gathering, with dozens of big stars like Jimmy Stewart, Spencer Tracy, Hepburn & all. Even with that gathering, the talk of the evening was whether Cary Grant was coming, & when he did he took over the room, & was the guy everybody there needed to see & be seen with. His charisma & cachet was unmatched, even with the biggest stars in Hollywood.

The click bait title is misleading. But who cares if he was straight or bi-sexual. If that was who he was, it wouldn't change his comedic timing, fine suspense/dramatic acting, or his love and attention to his daughter. If Grant is in a film, it's usually worth watching. My personal favorite is Charade. Both levity and drama. All the rest are a closely grouped second. ❤

About 20 yrs ago, Cary was voted the #1 Hollywood Star. Meaning, he personified the true meaning in every way of what a Hollywood Star really was. He was the epitome of the transformation of a human like us, into something that was between Royalty and Heaven. The rumors started after a PR stunt set up by the studios. It was the studies that set up Grant and Scott to live together in a house by the beach. Grant was happy, and it was normal at the time to leave the marital house to the wife. Men moved in together. The studio thought it would be hysterical to do a short clip to show in theaters of Scott and Grant setting up house together with Grant acting like a wife who needs to get the decor just perfect, and the dinner just right (in aprons). If the rumors were true, the PR stunt and living arrangements would never have been suggested. That would lead to private investigations and private investigations would let out a slew of unwanted headlines. His career would be over. His daughter and his ex-wife Barbara put that to rest several times. Barbara said that there were more starlets at their bachelor by the beach parties than there were in Hollywood, and the parties were every weekend! No, he was NOT gay!
When Cary realized his mother was still alive, he found her in the asylum and removed her. He bought her a mansion keeping ALL reporters away for her comfort and privacy. She never wanted again, for anything.
All in all, after years of trying to fix his childhood demons, he did become, at great effort, a wonderful man. At the time, LSD was a drug prescribed for depression. It was done under doctor's care, not as an addict. Many drugs begin this way. We abuse them. Later on, we discover the effects be it good or bad.
One of the last things my father asked me before he died was if Cary was gay? I had done a deep dive, and discovered, despite the all the rumors (and I can believe that gay men everywhere wished it were true), it wasn't.
My father bought a pair of glasses that he felt, made him look like Cary. I do not believe he would have disliked Cary at all if he was for his favorite singer, who came to find out was a gay singer named David Whitfield. He sang his favorite song "When You Lose The One You Love" he remembered fondly from his youth. Not wishing to let the love of that song, or the talent of the singer, he accepted. He was definitely straight. I know this for a fact, and do not want to go into the details here.

I was such a big fan of Cary Grant that I received a series of calls from friends on the day he died inquiring if I was all right. Now I was a fan, but I knew the difference between an actor and the roles he portrayed. I just defended Grant because I felt he didn't get the credit he deserved as an actor. He just made it look so easy, and I did adore his films. My favorite films were Bringing Up Baby, North by Northwest, Arsenic and Old Lace, Notorious, People Will Talk, Father Goose, and Penny Serenade. Of course, I mustn't forget Gunga Din, The Philadelphia Story, The Bachelor and the Bobby Socker, The Bishop's Wife, Mr. Blandings builds his Dream House, I was a Male War Bride, Crisis, Room for One More, and Houseboat. Did I forget one of yours?

I only cared about the gifts he shared with all of us. I like Chevy Chase, but he was never in Grant's league on any level. Without a doubt, one of the finest actors that ever lived. He was truly great in every genre. Not terribly noisy offscreen, either. His daughter is a lucky lady.

thumbs down - not because of the video is bad, though it has some howlers. (He and Betsy Drake were married for 13 years, not 3 years, for a start.) What is unforgiveable is using a completely misleading headline implying Jennifer confirmed the rumours about Grant's bisexuality (for which there is strong evidence from numerous trustworthy sources, including livelong friends of his). That headline is deliberately and cynically misleading. Thumbs down.

Arguably his best performance may have been opposite Irene Dunne in the film "Penny Serenade" (1941) which actually earned him a Best Actor Oscar nomination that year.
