  • On March 9, 2019 Rachel Flowers performed for a very special event at the Electronic Music Education and Preservation Project (EMEAPP) - The Keith Emerson Experience - at their facility outside of Philadelphia. It was a small gathering of electronic music specialists along with family and close friends of Keith Emerson, celebrating his life and music. Following her performance, Rachel had the opportunity to check out a rather rare instrument, a Yamaha GX-1 similar to the one Keith used on the ELP recording of Pirates. Here she plays the GX-1 for the first time, with Vince Pupillo Jr. assisting. It was an incredible experience, at times emotional but also very fun, as you can see here!
You can hear Rachel's complete studio recreation of Pirates on her SoundCloud channel at: / wnh7a
Many thanks to George Mandrin for providing this video from the event!

It must be awesome to be able to learn great music by ear, then remember ALL of it to perform for others. She’s a musical miracle worker in so many ways. What musician wouldn’t love to have her talent and abilities. I want to yell at her audience to STOP TALKING and just LISTEN, DANG IT!! They don’t even know what they’re missing. Sad.

Rachel is quite a talent. Although it's true she learned a lot of the music by ear (I don't know which pieces), she also learned by using braille music code which she learned to use while attending Southern California Conservatory of Music. Dear John E1: Rachel is great: I think this is a convention where many tech electronics instruments are displayed, and people are walking about experiencing other things or doing business. Some may not be familiar with ELP or RF.

As a fan who has followed Keith Emerson way back to the Nice Rachel is just an extraordinary talent. Many have tried to capture Keith's style yet Rachel does so effortlessly and with her own flare. Amazing!

I discovered KE just as Five Bridges Suite was released. Over the years he taught me so much about music. I bought ELP albums for the new synthesiser sounds but was exposed to all manner of strange orchestrations and jazz. A true education. Much of his playing still brings a tear to my eyes. Rachel is just as good as her mentor.

Rachel is soo awesome Keith is looking down with love . . I remember for my birthday flying home a week off between gigs and my mom bought tickets to ELP with orchestra on their opening concert with the 70 piece Orchestra first of the US tour at freedom Hall in Louisville Ky , I had seen them a couple times before and perfect as always but the highlight of the night was Pirates it was awesome and unforgetableAnd you know they as a three piece we're unbelievable but the Orchestra was a nice touch Rachel does Kieth ,Greg and Carl justice I truly miss that era of music ,musicians and quality of performances by the Groups back then If you never experienced Yes ,ELP Tull , Floyd King Crimson ,UK live to name a few but an rea of unique music by real Vocalist musicians ,compositions and staging, lighting etc ....but I own these Incredible memories of ....shall I say GREATNESS !!!!!!!!

Way back in 1977 I watched ELP do this live at the Hartford Civic Center during their Works Vol 1 tour.. It was amazing! These huge cannons rose over the Amps and fired confetti during Pirates and Emerson had his flying piano and the latest version of his modular Moog.. They did pretty much all of the Works Album ..

Welcome to the world of live musical performance. Unfortunately, one can not prevent the audience from the following very annoying behavior: Talking during songs about how they band played better at that concert they attended in Germany back in 1978. "Dude! We're all here right now, trying to enjoy this concert today. Shut the hell up!"
Singing off-key during their favorite hit songs which appear to be the only three songs by the band that they actually know. "Girl! We're here to listen to a great singer, not some tone deaf reject from an elementary school choir. Shut the hell up!"
Screaming, shouting, whistling and clapping through the entire first full minute of every song introduction. "People! We get it. You like this band a lot and you recognize this song by the first three notes. Congratulations! You're a musicial freaking genius. But, the rest of us also know this song by the intro and we would like to hear it because it's one of the best parts of the song. Shut the hell up!"

@@skybluemarshall Very well put. Audiences like this need to take a look at the average Japanese audience. Respectful, attentive, actually paying attention to & absorbing the music!!!!!! They wait until the end of the song to give their applause. It's a great example for the belligerent concertgoers of the world to follow...if only they'd *shut the hell up* for long enough to consider!

Yes, Rachel does know Braille music code, but she (understandibly) finds it bothersome having to use one hand for reading and having just one hand to play. Therefore Rachel learns these pieces by ear. The only time I've actually seen her use Braille is to create/read her set list.
