What a Scratch Golfer ACTUALLY Looks Like - 9 Holes in 9 Minutes

- In this video, I want to show you what a scratch golfer actually looks like in a short 9 holes in 9 minutes video. A big misconception is that we go out and shoot even par every time, which couldn't be further from the truth. We have good days and bad days and that is extremely evident when you haven't played a full round of golf in 3 months like myself. Yessir. Ohio State Scarlett course? From Ohio??
@@Cesar-Avila Yessir OSU Scarlett. I go to OSU
@@thatgolfgrind nice im from Ohio as well and lived here my whole life. Not looking forward to winter and cold coming around the corner😬
@@Cesar-Avila the forecast for the next 2 weeks makes me sad
I love it! Love to see good golfers posting real content!
Subbed. Nice video. Keep grinding it out buddy. I just started playing again this summer after a 7 year break from the game. The time away from the game has made me appreciate it so much more now. Take care
Thanks man I really appreciate it! Golf humbled you even more when you take time away. Going to keep grinding 💪
Same
Subbed. Struggling with my game, blew up from 7 to 11 over winter. Haven't broken 80 in 3mths so this is inspiring me to practice more to get game back!
I think I need to bring my expectations down a little bit. I usually shoot around 5-8 shots over par. I really thought scratch golfer would be straight down the middle. Almost all approach shots on the green. Thank u for showing me the reason why they say golf is hard. Greatly appreciated!! 😊
Of course! Glad you enjoyed it! Golf is hard for everyone lol
I play with a scratch golfer every week (I'm a 5 index) and he hits almost every fairway and makes a lot of putts from inside 10 feet. It's far from perfect but scratch means playing to the course rating an average of 8 times out of 20 rounds so the average score could be 75. The 8 best would consist of 2 or 3 under par rounds, 4 even par, and 2 or 3 a couple over. Which means the other 12 are 75 and up. With a standard deviation of 3, 19 out of 20 rounds would be within 6 shots of average which would be between 69 and 81.
@@plusfour1very good analysis 👍
Isn't a lost ball 4 from the fairway unless lost in a hazard/red stake?
great video. it’s really illustrative of how challenging it is to score well in this game. You have all the shots and skill of a scratch golfer yet to string it together in a great round at par or better still takes considerable amount of effort and luck. it also helps give us non-scratch mortals better perspective on how hard it is the score well. look forward to watching more!
Exactly. And that’s exactly what I want you guys to get out of the video. Glad you enjoyed it!
It’s so easy to drop a shot by not doing much wrong. You can easily end with the same score on a hole as a much worse player. The short game is usually the difference. Not easy to dial in distances with 3 months off.
That's a tough course!
Make the videos 10 mins. Over 10 mins gets you more ad revenue and engagement, and no matter how long you make your videos there will always be some people that ask for longer. I liked getting inside the strategy and thought behind your shots, scoreboard in upper right was awesome. Start planning for next summer, courses you want to play, video ideas etc. Keep working
Thanks for the insight! Appreciate it!
I learn a thing or two from watching these videos. Also just calming to watch. I subscribed. Nice job!
Here’s the content I’ve been looking for! Short and to the point golf. Subbed!

I had been off for 6 years, but this is how I play now.....except I've been playing once a week and practicing 1-2 a week for several months lol! Thank you for sharing this round with us. Look forward to the next.
Glad you enjoyed it! More to come
exactly the kind of golf video I like the most. I especially appreciate the shot tracer on basically every shot, really helps since we obviously can't see ball flights.
Awesome! I’m really glad you like it. Stay tuned for more!
@thatgolfgrind also, I am the fat talkative guy from sportsohio couple weeks ago. glad to support the content!
@@smallreddoggy haha yep I remember! Thanks for the support
Good golf I can tell you got it in you. Those putts just weren’t sinking. Any advice for me where I’m able to hit greens but my ball rolls off too far? I think I need more spin but I’m not sure how to get it.
Thank you ! I played 2 times on the greens 9 holes and can better manage my expectations now.
My dude said I had a putt for par after losing a tee ball , and didn’t play a provisional 😂. Ok scratch golfer👍
Nice swing!! Thanks for sharing⛳️
This is my typical round as a 10hcp. Sloppy tee balls, great recoveries, couple holes where it all clicks.
Under the new handicap calculation system that the USGA/WHS now uses, taking the average of the best 8 of 20 round score differentials, instead of the old 10 of 20 rounds. A scratch golfer, meaning a 0.0 index golfer, will shoot even par or better on a 72.0 rated/slope 120/par 72 course, 15-20 percent of the time. 75 percent of rounds will be 1-7 strokes higher than the handicap target score, round scores of 73-78. And a small percentage of rounds will be blow up rounds, scores over 78.
That same 0.0 index golfer would have a playing handicap of 7 at bethpage black back playing the 78 rating/155 slope/par 71 back tees. They would shoot 78 or better only 15-20 percent of the time, 75 percent of rounds would be scores of 79--85. And a small percentage will be blow up rounds over 85.
Great vid! People dont realize that even Arnold Palmer wasnt a scratch golfer over his career
300-yard 5-wood. 180-yard pitching wedge. You kids play a different game than I do!
Brother I would take that round every single time lol. Great video and you got a new sub👊🏼
Slope rating? Wish I could hit it anywhere and still have a good look
Excellent video. 👍
I am scratch and I have not shot 80 in years. I don’t know any other that do either.
So the first hole was 435 and you hit a 5 wood to 133 to the pin? You hit your 5 wood 300 yards?
Ohio State Univ Scarlet Course. Lots of bunkers. Tough course
When did you become scratch? I was a 9 last year when I was 15 and I’m trying to hit scratch this year
Enjoyed this video..golf is hard lol
I was stunned when i saw the title (because I’ve seen this guy’s IG vids lol) but the video proceeded to confirm what I already knew. That’s about how a swing like that should shoot. 💯
Thx for this. Can you define what a scratch golfer is then?
When you are scratch it means that on your best days you should be shooting near par depending on the course rating. The handicap system takes into account your best 8/20 scores. This means in 20 rounds you are only shooting your handicap or better 4 times
the video quality is very crisp nice short video! whats your setup out there?
Thank you! Appreciate it. I have the Stealth driver and 3 wood, Mizuno 221 pros, Vokey sm9 wedges and the MEZZ 1 from Lab golf as my putter
@@thatgolfgrind oh awesome! I meant the camera/audio/vlogging setup! haha
@@akinhwan oh haha. I have the Sony A6400 with the dji mic
Nice video, helpfull but...187 yards = 7 iron ??? I'm far from that
2:18 lost ball costs 2 penalty strokes, at least where I play
Love the Scarlet course you an Ohio State grad?
I hover around scratch and I will shoot 80 quite often, but I also shoot 68,69,70 etc. quite often as well.
im scratch and i havent shot a round in the 80s in a good time
You guys should battle. Live stream it.
Hard to tell from this video just how difficult Scarlet is. 5 over is very respectable considering how your driver was treating you that day, including the lost shot.
Scarlet is definitely sneaky hard. Glad you understand the challenge 😂
New sub.... lets go
You should post another video after you get back "in the grove" with your game.
Can we get a legit longer video of you playing 9? Something casual
What would you want to see? I like getting feedback from you guys!
Ha! I guess I'm a scratch golfer!!
We all have good days and bad days, especially when you time time off from the game
@@thatgolfgrind For sure ! Great vid though! Im just sour cuz im stuck in the mid to high 70's and havent broken par yet.
@@oatechaosincycles keep grinding and you got it!
You hit 5 wood 300 on the first T? Hmmm?
bro is there a tiny spider web on your hat/face in the beginning?? that's crazy!
I was looking for your GHIN account to verify your past scores and handicap. Would you provide it?
Right now my GHIN expired since I don’t belong to a course while I’m in school
@@thatgolfgrind it’s $35 a year. You tell people you’re a scratch player, but you have no proof. 300 yard 5 wood, 187 yard 7 iron…it’s all bogus without scores that validate.
Maybe he used to be a scratch player but he played like a 10 handicapper here
I guess that's what happens when you can't practice and play a lot!
Ha weird I'm in New Albany, Ohio and this showed up on my feed.
How come you added just 1 stroke on the 3rd after not finding your ball? Nice content!
Played it as a hazard since there were leaves everywhere so hit my third shot from the rough. Appreciate it!
Did you hit a 300yrd 5 wood on one!? lol
Do what your telling me is.... there's a chance
Dude would easily be a -1 or -2 handicap from just going to a 1-2 lessons to get his driver game analyzed and corrected
Couldn’t find your ball off the tee, and you take one stroke? That’s not how that works.
Settle down karen
He's the one pretending to be a scratch golfer not me. @@joshgullicksrud3444
@@joshgullicksrud3444I mean he is claiming to be a scratch golfer, if he's taking a stroke or two off every card it's kinda worth pointing out
@@joshgullicksrud3444Lol he’s just saying how golf works. It’s okay to not know, just let us help you.
I’m new to golf, so what is the rule if you lose your ball? I actually thought you just dropped where it went out and counted that as your second stroke, but that’s wrong?
I’m sorry but golf scoring and the handicap system is the biggest scam in sports to make people feel better than they actually are.
It’s just because the skill gap in golf is soooooo much wider, it only makes sense to have different tiers for different skill of players
That's a proper 9 if I've ever seen it. Makes me wish I did not suck
Appreciate it 🤝
I don’t know if anyone realizes this but this is not scratch golf. Closer to 10 handicap golf. That’s just math.
Your handicap is not your average, huge misconception. Your handicap is what you should shoot on your best days, your potential
@@thatgolfgrind can you show us those days?
Isn’t your handicap actually something like the average of your best 8 rounds out of your last 20? Something like that?
Good job but perhaps you should of played more rounds before posting this video. I was excited but……
This is bogey golf pretty far off from scratch
If you hit on the fairway of another hole isn’t that out of bounds and a penalty?
No
Not scratch 😂
Scratch lol
I'm better
nice video but how many excuses are you going to make lol
The title seems just a little bit misleading. Maybe “What someone who was a scratch golfer looks like.”
Sorry bro. I swear my 13 year old boy will smoke you. You remember Evan Les. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
So I guess that there is a local rule which allows a lost ball to be played as a lateral hazard ?
Probably worth mentioning....🤷
🎩✌️⛳️🏌♂️🏜
Yeah. It’s sad that virtually all TH-cam golfers drop and say they are hitting 3.
It’s terrible that they are “teaching” people how to cheat.
@@jasonwagner5255lol I can promise you this is not the guy that would cheat on the course
I’m sure he’s a great player, but dropping in the rough in a place where it’s wide open to the green is very obviously cheating and people that watch these types of videos will think it’s normal. If he thought it was truly lost in the leaves, then why was his drop in a place that had no leaves?
I’m not sure how you can defend it. It is what it is.
@@jasonwagner5255 gallery drop? I’m just letting you know that I know this guy and he’s a stand up dude
