- At Holley Intergalactic Ford Fest Larry spotted this ’73 Ford Capri enjoying its retirement from drag racing care of its owner Jerry LaCoss, who totally rebuilt it into a badass luxury cruiser! This European cousin of the classic Mustang is outfitted with a Ford racing bodykit, knockoff-style wheels custom built by Forgeline, and all the conveniences that modern electronics provide (yes, it has AC!). Jerry pored over every detail for this 2.5 year build, but we all get to drink in the glory - enjoy!

You gotta remember when he first got his license cars just had very basic radios, now you can listen to radio, plug in mp3/bluetooth phones and play movies and even games from inside your car.

@@zackraiden5875 Why? With today's technology and amazing car audio products it shouldn't be all that difficult. I used to install Custom stereo's in cars, especially old muscle cars and show cars and I've done countless ones in classics. Some even had hide away screens and yet when looked at interior of vehicle it looked vintage and stock

@@toe-b203 Unless Ford had another car with the same body, it was sold in the US as the Mercury Capri. My wife had one when we met in 1981. Hers had a V6 with a 5 speed manual (I think it was 5???) In stock for they were a pretty nice little car. I've never seen one in the "flesh" fixed up even close to what this guy has. As small as it is, that 302 sounds like a perfect fit. Anything bigger would need a hydraulic-shoe-horn to get it under the hood.

@@dieseldabz7104 I've been very impressed with the technology in the Coyote engine but as wide as it appears to be, I'm surprised that it would fit into that narrow engine bay. What I remember from that car my wife used to own is that there's not much room.

There's just something about a car guy getting to show off his car and all the things that make it special and unique to him that has me always clicking on Larry's videos. Jerry's got a ton to be proud of with an amazing machine like that and all the modern electronics while still keeping that classic style and a beautiful fucking paintjob.

The capri was designed by Philip T. Clark to be the european equivalent to the mustang for european ford
Philip also helped design the mustang.
So it is the european mustang, even according to its own designer. That is the title it deserves.

I've owned 3 Capri's in my time, all Mk 3's, a 1.6 L, 2.8 Injection Special and another 2.8 Turbo Technics, modded and swapped to a 2.9 TT from a 90's Sierra 4x4. Best car ever made, (except maybe the DeTomsa Pantera). The car I always promised myself.

They are awesome cars. I had a 2.8i about 15 yrs ago. Had a 4.6L Rover engine for ot but never got round to it. Regret selling it so bad 😔

I've got a soft spot for them too,as my first car was a 1973 Capri after I passed my test in November 1985. Mine was a scarlet red colour,but I'd described the darkest red he could find for the one in this video as chestnut brown if someone asked me to name that colour. Remarkable the modifications and installations he and the people he's hired have made to it,great job.

I couldn't agree more! WAY COOLER than a normal "retirement sports car"! Jerry is a true hot rodder and is the embodiment of The American Spirit.
My dad had a 3.0ltr GT in Scotland back in the mid 70's..... White, Black Vinyl roof, that he bought from an ex-Rally driver buddy who had the engine retuned........ Stiffened suspension and brakes.......it was easily the Fastest Capri in the area, if not the country, the Speedo said 120mph but he regularly outran his buddy's Dino.........I adored it!

Capri was the best designed car for its handling that Ford ever created , I had two of these beauties and would love to own another one before they are all gone
Really cool car. I had one, my 2nd car, back in 1996, a yellow and black '69 1600 that I was rebuilding to look like a Perana. (My first car was a '79 Ford Escort 1600 Sport). The Perana was a South African built Capri with a 302 Windsor V8 homolagted for racing. Chev in South Africa had their version with a 5.0 V8 in a Firenza Coupé called the Can Am. They were legends on and off the track. The gentleman responsible for the Capri V8 was Basil Green. In addition, he developed Perana versions of the the Escort, Cortina and Granada. In In the 90s there was a Sapphire Perana with an Essex V6 bored to 3.4ltr, 0-100 in 7 seconds and top speed of 235-240. All that from an ancient (1960s) N/A V6. As for my Capri, it never went, eventually traded it for a Beetle.
Mine was a yellow and black 1974 2000GT 4 speed! (nice way of saying it had the "little engine")
@@Blackinterceptor999 small but my little 1600 Escort could stick with a Golf 2 GTi up to about 150kph. Admittedly it was slightly tuned, but those 1600 Kent Motors could rev. Scary in the wet. Ended up backwards on the pavement twice. Yellow and black? Do I detect a theme here? Might as well call them the British Bumble-bees.

@@johnsnow5239 Remember the ultimate XR8? Willie Hepburns Animal. Saw it at Kyalami. Along with Sarel vd Merves Audi and Ben Morgenroedts 4 rotor MX6 it was the soundtrack of my youth.

I must say, this is one hell of a beautiful Capri. It was my favorite car growing up in London, so when I came to the states in my late Teens I got a 73 Capri V6 2600.
The ford V8 fits so well and absolutely sounds fantastic!!!!

The very first car I sat behind the wheel of was a Capri. They were very popular in Jamaica when I was a kid (along with Escorts & Cortinas). The 3000 Capri was the dream car of many.

I've seen a lot of Capris and many V8 swaps but this is the best I've come across, and what a beautiful colour
I still remember the first V8 Capri I travelled in aged just seven, they called it 'the beast', it eventually ended up in a bus stop
Damn... Love a Capri and Jerry has done a stunning job on this one. That racing kit looks stunning, the wheels are perfect and the modernisations are just what you'd want - nothing excessive but everything you'd need to make an old car more enjoyable. I've said it before but these 'restomods' are just awesome, they're the old car you always wanted, the WAY you always wanted them. You imagine a classic Capri and you imagine the sound, the looks and the feeling. You don't imagine the useless brakes, the lack of any creature comforts, the slop or the rust. This is a Capri but the Capri you saw when you stared through the showroom wall as a drooling kid.
Also, Larry killing it once again. I feel like I could give him my e92 with its dodgy electrics, misfires and bent front bumped and he'd make it look like a total gem.
What a wonderful design of this wonderful vehicle. It is a true blessing to see what this guy has produced on such a classic beauty 🙏🙏👊👍💪👌
I always loved those Capri’s. If I remember correctly they had a rust problem which is unfortunate. I can’t remember when the last time I saw one in person. Beautiful car.

I love listening to the old guys describing their cars. The thing I love most about this guy is that he wasn't talking about his cars from the past trough the lense of nostalgia instead he spoke with honesty.
Had a childhood friend who purchased a 1974 Ford Capri New. It had the stock 2.6L V6. He added Hooker headers and a custom exhaust, plus a 4 barrel Holly and Manifold for it. Not sure if he changed the CAM or not now. It got close to 6-8K RPM if I remember correctly. It was the baddest 1/4 mile car at the time on the street. No one believed there wasn’t a V8 in it. He won some serious money convincing people to race him.
Had a good friend from Lake Ronkonkoma, NY who loved Capris and always drove them like he stole them. Good driver too, except for one failing... whenever he saw a turn signal in front of him his reaction was to pass on that side of the car. What made him an even better driver is: he always managed to avoid getting hit when passing on the wrong side...lmao. Needless to say he was always re-earning his nickname "Gonzo".

They were built on the production line in SA with a 302, they fit straight in.
We got the 3.0litre ESSEX V6 in the UK, that's a MK1 1/2, they first came out here in 1969 but that car is the German version and would of had a "Colongne" engine in it, nice car,
I built my 2dr Sierra with a V8i Rover engine in it and a T5 RS500 trans in 1990
302 cid Capris were never built on the production line in South Africa.
Each and every Capri Perana started life as a 3.0 Essex Capri that was then shipped to Basil Green of Perana fame. There he dropped the Capri 3.0 engine into a Cortina 2.0 body, dropped the Cortina engine in an Escort and sold the Escort engine in CAR Magazine. The Capri would then receive a Mustang Winsor engine that had been imported from the USA for this purpose.
There were also Granada 5.0 Peranas that were dealt with in the same way.
This whole operation had the blessing (read warranty) from Ford South Africa, but was a totally independent business.
@@friendlypiranha774 How come Bakkie P100 pick ups had them?, by the way, not doubting your word just curious, they end up over here in UK with 302s in occasionally. There is a Capri for sale at the moment but they, like Cosworths, are just too slow for what they cost now and very easy to build these days if the original axle is used.
@markholroyde9412 - the P100 Bakkie (pick-up) was based on the Cortina... in fact, no-one in South Africa refers to them as P100's, always as Cortina Bakkie. Bakkie is the Afrikaans word for little dish or bowl. These were available with the Essex 3.0 as the biggest engine option in this country and were never converted to V8 by Basil Green Motors.
However, us as South Africans would drop a V8 into anything we could find in those days and there were many, many such V8 conversions done in people's backyards. I saw a really nice V8 conversion on a Mk III Cortina Bakkie last month - guy did the job himself just a few years ago.
As I said, we would drop a V8, normally Ford or Chevy and occasionally Studebaker if we could find one, into anything... Toyota Hi-Lux, Mercedes W124 and W126, BMW E30, literally anything. Another nice V8 was the Rover 3.5 that we would drop into a Volkswagen Kombi, mostly the T3; but I have been in a T2 with a Chev 350 already. We also had hundreds and hundreds of Kombis with the Essex 3.0 V6 - that was such a popular conversion that there were even specialist shops doing the conversion.
So to answer your question... they were all home-made jobbies, as we called it. Hope this helps.
EDIT: PS - I have even seen a couple of early 80s Toyota Corollas with V8 engines; one such a neat job that it looked like a factory installation, yet it too was a home-made jobbie.
EDIT: PPS - I forgot, any Jaguar XJ-6, from the Series 1 with overdrive to the Series 3 was a candidate for a V8 transplant - mostly Chev 327 or 350 mated to a Turbo-Hydramatic 350. I was once lucky enough to drive both a manual and automatic XJ-6 with 327s on the same day. Awesome cars with those V8s.
And of course, any Ford Transit from the 70s that survived it's service life ended up as a camper van with a V8 engine and shaggy-pile carpeting. We loved out V8s like the Australians and our camper vans like the Americans.

I too have been around engine transplants for 45 years . I have owned my '68 Roadrunner 40 years also a '69 Dart and a '68 440 Fury,. iJZ Toyota Soarer owned 15 years before the "JZs" were really popular, never sold here, imported from OSAKA off original owner. .There is a dealer up in Scotland that imports all the stuff over from SA but idiots over here want the REAL thing made in the UK,🤣 even the Capris brought over from CA take some selling....., me? makes no difference to me where they come from, cheers, UK

My first car was a brand new '72 Capri V6. I loved that car. Put many, many miles on it. Sold it to my BIL cheap. He put many, many more miles on it.

The South African Ford did the real thing - Ford Capri with a Mustang 5L V8. Built by Basil Green, The Original Capri and Ford Granada ( Europe ) were designed to take the Windsor Mustang V8, the Granada was also available with a 6,6L V8 for towing.
We shall call this episode unique car & driver. Fantastic Job with this one Larry.

My brother bought a new 2 liter Capri in 1972. Cost 2,800 dollars back then. He had it until the early 2,000s.

I had a 1974 Capri 3.0 GT, bought it with a blown engine , at the time I was in Germany, installed a junk yard Capri engine which I believe had a higher spec. I installed a Piper cam Holley carburettor, red wine draylon interior (it was the thing) and that baby would wheel spin uphill in 3rd gear(don't ask how I know :) )

I used to do PDI's on these in the UK in the early 70's. The 1300cc was hardly a Mustang. Great looking cars.
a Capri in stock form looks better than any Mustang imo. One of the best looking Fords of all time. This one is a real masterpiece. Everything done just right, great color

My wife had a '72 Mercury Capri V6 stick shift when we got married in '81. The exhaust had a glass pack. The car eventually went to a friend. Those cars were alot of fun and had alot of pep but eventually you couldn't get parts for them anymore so they disappeared from the streets.
Girlfriend of mine back in day had one. Drove it once an was hooked. Just like monza small package big motor. Fantastic

Yeah that's a work of art that one. As a Brit that saw millions of these things. And back then they weren't even the nicest Car from Ford. MkI MkII Cortina's and Escorts. But 3 litre Capri's were beasts.
