Really don't think you could find two actors more different than Wayne and Harvey in terms of up bring and training yet they played off each other very well in this film, shame they never worked together again and even more of a shame that despite being younger by almost 20 years Laurence Harvey would pass away 6 years before John Wayne
Theres another scene where Crockett is speaking with Jim Bowie. And he's telling Crockett about the Mexican people and about his Mexican wife. Very heartwarming scene. Shows the softer more human side of historical figures suck as Crockett and Bowie. Whether they were actually said in real life well..... we'll never know

Crockett's image of a rugged Mountain Man and Indian fighter, though he did serve in the Creek war of 1812, and was a well-regarded hunter, was not the image he wanted people to have of him. He wanted be seen as a man of high standing, and civilized society. He also was not a man who enjoyed the carnage of the battlefield, it was appalling to him. He was proud of his service, though. He had a down-home charm that endeared him to many. And had earnest intentions to do the right thing, to make things better, and stood by his beliefs, but just like it is now, he was living in a world who's first priority is self-interest, and who gladly discarded him after it felt his use to them was at an end.

He made a good point about the Jonestown suicides being put down to brainwashing but not Hearst transformation in captivity. His heart was in the right place.
I approach The Alamo the same way that I approached the two Wyatt Earp movies that came out in the 90s. While Kevin Costner's was far more historically accurate (and not a bad movie by any means), I would much rather sit through Tombstone and be entertained. The same goes for The Alamo. Billy Bob Thornton's 2004 version was more accurate (and again not a bad movie), but for all its schlock give me the Duke's version - much more entertaining to watch
I went to the premier showing of this at the Paramount Theater in Austin, Tx. During one of the fight scenes with the Mexican cavalry jumping over a barricade there was suddenly a loud shout "FANNIN IS COMING, FANNIN IS COMING" The whole theater, full of Texas University students errupted in screams and shouts. Way up at the top of the screen could be seen a yellow school bus moving from right to left. That was definitely the high point of the evening,

You know I'm Scottish and we had the same nasty and bitter nonsense from the English about the film 'Braveheart ' not being historically accurate. Like the 'Alamo' it was a great movie.....First class entertainment and like the 'Alamo' movie it has aroused a curiosity that wasn't there before. I just know that these films were so good I'd watch them again & again..….I dont think there has ever been a movie that has been absolutely 100% historically accurate.....it would be too boring...just rejoice in it all and wish for the day when SCOTLAND becomes a republic and free from our tyrants too. Very funny.Travas was English and Texas has English common law .Early on they debated weather to adopt the Union flag into there State flag.Scotland has Roman law ,thousands of Scots flocked to Texas when their clan overlords disposes,d them .England is the 5th economy in the world and keeps you out of the bastille.

Agreed, Texas was a Republic long before it became a state. And Democracy means Mob rule, the majority rules. Unfortunately that is what is happening now, back then the US was still a Republic. After Lincoln and the War between the States it ceased being a Republic, now I would call it an Empire.
Although I enjoy this film greatly Nate A. was correct in what he said. The Alamo is not a very historically accurate film, it does however, give a depiction of the mindset of the men that defended the Alamo. I would recommend reading Three Roads to the Alamo.
John Wayne made a horrible Davy Crockett but by that time, he had earned the right to do what he wanted. Like Chaplin, he was all about the entertainment.
A terrific movie about the Alamo. Historically correct? Of Course not this was entertainment, colourful and used real men as the actors not "Hollywood Boys". Wayne's directing of the movie was sloppy at times and continuity was not one of his strong points as Richard Widmark complained about. In this scene Travis says he doesn't drink ever. Yet earlier in the movie he shares a tipple with his Captain in his room. That should not have been missed. For me this is the most enjoyable version of the Alamo movies
I think it may have said something about the man that Travis was (in the movie). Travis didn't consort with the rabble so he wouldn't drink with them either. In another scene that is sometimes cut out of certain prints. Travis and Dickinson discuss the differences between Jeffersonian and Hamiltonian stye Democracy. When I first saw him drinking in his quarters I was confused but then I thought about it and came to this conclusion.

I enjoy this movie. I am a Texan and live in San Antonio and I hate to tell you this but this movie is not all that accurate. It makes a point about freedom and what a small group men did at the Alamo back in 1836 but John Wayne made the movie John Wayne style. Oh I do love John Wayne and this is one of my favorite John Wayne movie's but it is what it is.
Regardless of what anyone else says, this is a very accurate depiction of the famous siege of the Alamo. Maybe not 100% accurate, but quite accurate. I'm no historian, but my dad is. I'd say this film is roughly 60 to 70% accurate. 1) Sam Houston promotes Travis to Colonel after he arrives in San Antonio. 2) Bowie and Travis persistently bicker and fight with each other...even to the point of having a dual after the war with the Mexican soldiers is over. Of course, they're all killed, so the dual never happens. But, it would have happened had they not have been killed. Bowie even remarks much later in the film that he'd "hate to look at a coward over a dueling pistol." 3) Emil Sande wants to marry this Mexican woman named Flaca. But, he's killed in a deleted scene, so the marriage never happens. 4) This scene depicted in the video. 5) Colonel Neil goes with Houston early on in the film. In fact, he arrives with Houston at the start. 6) Travis answers a Mexican messenger with a cannon shot. 7) Several men destroy a large cannon after it destroys a chunk of the wall and Beekeeper's keg of whisky. 8) Travis sends out patrols to scout the area. In one such patrol, two men are killed in a deleted scene...after which, Travis orders no more patrols. 9) Travis and Susanna Dickinson are related. He mentions that she's his cousin. 10) Bowie is regretfully informed during the siege that his wife and kids have died from the plague. 11) Colonel Fannin and his men are ambushed before the Alamo falls. How Santa Anna's men got to Goliad before San Antonio is never mentioned, so it remains a mystery. 12) After learning of Fannin's unfortunate fate, Travis allows the volunteers to choose whether to stay or leave after giving them a speech about how brave they are in defending the fort for ten days. 13) Smitty (the youngest defender of the Alamo) is sent to Houston to deliver a message about the Alamo and the situation the Texans are in. 14) Travis tells Captain Dickinson that he's married when Susanna refuses to evacuate shortly before the first of the main battles. 15) There are 50 casualties in the first main battle...28 of which are dead, cutting down their forces by a fairly significant margin and in desperate need of reinforcements, which never come. 16) The Texans go down fighting to the last man at the last battle of March 6, 1836. These scenes above are not in chronological order. But, most of them are very accurate in my opinion. Again, I'm no historian, so all of this may or may not be exactly right. Try not to bash me or insult me if some of these things don't agree with any of you. You can respectfully disagree, of course, and even correct me if you wish.
Except for Bowie's Nock volley gun, except for the raid to knock out the siege gun, except for Bowie wanting to abandon the Alamo, except for Crocket blowing up the powder magazine in the end. Frankly, any Texas account of the siege is open to question as it is based on Susanna Dixon's account, which assumes (1) that she was actually able to see the action, and (2) that her version is accurate and not tailored to emphasize the heroism and skill of the defenders.

It's a docudrama compared to MY DARLING CLEMENTINE, directed by Wayne's mentor John Ford, or Errol Flynn's CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE The speechifying may be a little much, but Americans really DID feel that way in 1836, and the final battle is worth the wait
Everyone Chill Out! To make a Good Movie that is Historically Accurate is almost impossible. Look at Hacksaw Ridge, Tora, Tora, Tora, 55 Days in Peking or The Battle of Britain. A movie that was rigidly held to real chronological events, precisely the way the occurred would be boring. It would consist mainly of people arguing, whining and complaining or boasting. If you DO make a movie that is Historically Correct you end up with a Documentary. To make a movie that is Entertaining directors use as much “Artistic Expression” that they can get away with. Think of Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom in “Troy.” That film had almost nothing to do with “The Iliad” or Homer. It was entertaining but if I were the nation of Greece I would have sued. Remember in the novel the duel between Achilles and Hector was almost all about Achilles chasing Hector around the walls of Troy. How boring would that be?
"The Last Command" used the perspective of Jim Bowie. In this film, using the perspective of David Crockett w/ John Wayne in that role was a natural, safer money gamble. Producing a film is usually a high-stakes, high-risk play. If I had millions at the mercy of a fickle public, I would have gone w/ Wayne. Since Wayne produced the film, he had final say, but I believe personal $$$ was a more determining casting factor than ego for that role.
Well, they had been invited in, granted citizenship, participated in republican government, and then seen their republic overthrown by a military dictatorship. Ours was neither the first nor the last rebellion against Santa Anna. It was merely the most successful. The rebellion was supported by both English and Spanish speaking Texicans. If you go to San Antonio, and see the cenotaph in Alamo Plaza, you will see names like Gonzales and Seguin on it. At the battle of San Jacinto, as the Texican army advanced, on the left flank, the battle cry was not, "Remember the Alamo!" but rather, "Recuerda el Alamo!"
This film, though it does have its moments, has not aged well and is generally not regarded as one of Wayne's better efforts--and I think rightly so. The first 3/4 of this overlong movie suffers from the kind of dull sermonizing displayed by this scene, and overall it is downright sanctimonious. Add to that the gross historical inaccuracies in the battle scenes near the film's end. The Duke's best work by far is from earlier in his career, with spectacular efforts such as The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Red River, Rio Grande, and of course the unforgettable The Searchers.
No he wasn't. He tried many times to get in the war. Kept being told no. The studios would not let him out of his contracts and threatened to sue him if he pursued it. Others didn't fight in the war but no one calls them draft dodgers. Why is the hate only reserved for Wayne? Ben Johnson, Spencer Tracy, Gregory Peck, Cary Grant, Robert Mitchum are some big names who did not serve. No one cares. But Wayne? Yeah, now it's all some sort of big problem because he couldn't get in! You know-nothings need to get a grip. It has been over 80 years. Let it go!

His family needed him, and if he had gone and gotten killed, he may have indeed been an American hero, but that wouldn't have done his family any good. Except for Jimmy Stewart and Clark Gable, very few Hollywood stars who served wound up in combat. Two future actors who did serve, Richard Boone and Lee Marvin, had two things in common; both liked Wayne and both had horrible combat experiences that gave them PTSD which helped drive them to drink

The Duke was a phony, and never went into military service (he liked Hollywood bullets)! Davy Crockett surrendered at the Alamo folks, and Travis committed suicide at the north wall, and Bowie was found hiding under his bed covers and killed in this fashion...some heroes!

My favorite film
I approach The Alamo the same way that I approached the two Wyatt Earp movies that came out in the 90s. While Kevin Costner's was far more historically accurate (and not a bad movie by any means), I would much rather sit through Tombstone and be entertained. The same goes for The Alamo. Billy Bob Thornton's 2004 version was more accurate (and again not a bad movie), but for all its schlock give me the Duke's version - much more entertaining to watch
I went to the premier showing of this at the Paramount Theater in Austin, Tx. During one of the fight scenes with the Mexican cavalry jumping over a barricade there was suddenly a loud shout "FANNIN IS COMING, FANNIN IS COMING" The whole theater, full of Texas University students errupted in screams and shouts. Way up at the top of the screen could be seen a yellow school bus moving from right to left. That was definitely the high point of the evening,

One of my very favourite John Wayne scenes.
You know I'm Scottish and we had the same nasty and bitter nonsense from the English about the film 'Braveheart ' not being historically accurate. Like the 'Alamo' it was a great movie.....First class entertainment and like the 'Alamo' movie it has aroused a curiosity that wasn't there before. I just know that these films were so good I'd watch them again & again..….I dont think there has ever been a movie that has been absolutely 100% historically accurate.....it would be too boring...just rejoice in it all and wish for the day when SCOTLAND becomes a republic and free from our tyrants too. Although I enjoy this film greatly Nate A. was correct in what he said. The Alamo is not a very historically accurate film, it does however, give a depiction of the mindset of the men that defended the Alamo. I would recommend reading Three Roads to the Alamo.

A terrific movie about the Alamo. Historically correct? Of Course not this was entertainment, colourful and used real men as the actors not "Hollywood Boys". Wayne's directing of the movie was sloppy at times and continuity was not one of his strong points as Richard Widmark complained about. In this scene Travis says he doesn't drink ever. Yet earlier in the movie he shares a tipple with his Captain in his room. That should not have been missed. For me this is the most enjoyable version of the Alamo movies
I think it may have said something about the man that Travis was (in the movie). Travis didn't consort with the rabble so he wouldn't drink with them either. In another scene that is sometimes cut out of certain prints. Travis and Dickinson discuss the differences between Jeffersonian and Hamiltonian stye Democracy. When I first saw him drinking in his quarters I was confused but then I thought about it and came to this conclusion.

I enjoy this movie. I am a Texan and live in San Antonio and I hate to tell you this but this movie is not all that accurate. It makes a point about freedom and what a small group men did at the Alamo back in 1836 but John Wayne made the movie John Wayne style. Oh I do love John Wayne and this is one of my favorite John Wayne movie's but it is what it is.

Regardless of what anyone else says, this is a very accurate depiction of the famous siege of the Alamo. Maybe not 100% accurate, but quite accurate. I'm no historian, but my dad is. I'd say this film is roughly 60 to 70% accurate.
1) Sam Houston promotes Travis to Colonel after he arrives in San Antonio.
2) Bowie and Travis persistently bicker and fight with each other...even to the point of having a dual after the war with the Mexican soldiers is over. Of course, they're all killed, so the dual never happens. But, it would have happened had they not have been killed. Bowie even remarks much later in the film that he'd "hate to look at a coward over a dueling pistol."
3) Emil Sande wants to marry this Mexican woman named Flaca. But, he's killed in a deleted scene, so the marriage never happens.
4) This scene depicted in the video.
5) Colonel Neil goes with Houston early on in the film. In fact, he arrives with Houston at the start.
6) Travis answers a Mexican messenger with a cannon shot.
7) Several men destroy a large cannon after it destroys a chunk of the wall and Beekeeper's keg of whisky.
8) Travis sends out patrols to scout the area. In one such patrol, two men are killed in a deleted scene...after which, Travis orders no more patrols.
9) Travis and Susanna Dickinson are related. He mentions that she's his cousin.
10) Bowie is regretfully informed during the siege that his wife and kids have died from the plague.
11) Colonel Fannin and his men are ambushed before the Alamo falls. How Santa Anna's men got to Goliad before San Antonio is never mentioned, so it remains a mystery.
12) After learning of Fannin's unfortunate fate, Travis allows the volunteers to choose whether to stay or leave after giving them a speech about how brave they are in defending the fort for ten days.
13) Smitty (the youngest defender of the Alamo) is sent to Houston to deliver a message about the Alamo and the situation the Texans are in.
14) Travis tells Captain Dickinson that he's married when Susanna refuses to evacuate shortly before the first of the main battles.
15) There are 50 casualties in the first main battle...28 of which are dead, cutting down their forces by a fairly significant margin and in desperate need of reinforcements, which never come.
16) The Texans go down fighting to the last man at the last battle of March 6, 1836.
These scenes above are not in chronological order. But, most of them are very accurate in my opinion. Again, I'm no historian, so all of this may or may not be exactly right. Try not to bash me or insult me if some of these things don't agree with any of you. You can respectfully disagree, of course, and even correct me if you wish.
Except for Bowie's Nock volley gun, except for the raid to knock out the siege gun, except for Bowie wanting to abandon the Alamo, except for Crocket blowing up the powder magazine in the end. Frankly, any Texas account of the siege is open to question as it is based on Susanna Dixon's account, which assumes (1) that she was actually able to see the action, and (2) that her version is accurate and not tailored to emphasize the heroism and skill of the defenders.
I would have sent out patrols to try and capture Santa Anna and delay or stop the siege and war in Texas.
You forgot bout the Tejano that font and the site of the Alamo and lost his life and his brother that van decided Santana and asked if he could recover his brother's body he's the only one Defender of the Alamo they got a Christian burial and I'm sure for I'm sure you forgot a lot of other important thanks you never mentioned the town was it fought on the side of the Alamo like Hollywood personally I never have cared for this movie the last movie they made for TV about the Alamo what's more accurate than this one they do mention Times by name and the role they play in the Battle of the Alamo

Well that kind of was Davey Crockett's style - he was a braggart politician who inflated his exploits with plays and almanacs. Bowie was guilty of this to a lesser degree, but he certainly was closer to his legend.

They simply waited until the polls were almost closed to see how many they would have to print up in order to win. Explain how a mail in ballot is verified to be legitimate when no one is there to verify with a photo id who they are. Impossible. Then there were all those cases which have been verified of people going to the polls and being turned away because they were told they had already voted.

Every state has different rules. Signature and contact info is the most common, and some DO require copies of IDs. Getting a mail vote counted is actually HARDER because even the most slight change in your recorded signature will result in your ballot being tossed, and only a few states give you a chance to correct it. And that’s leaving out the barriers of even RECEIVING a mail-in ballot in the first place. So yea…..it’s not the auto-count process you seem to believe it is.
But you could have learned all this yourself. The simple truth is you don’t care about the truth and will choose to believe a lie with absolutely no supporting evidence before you’ll accept a fact.

It's a docudrama compared to MY DARLING CLEMENTINE, directed by Wayne's mentor John Ford, or Errol Flynn's CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE The speechifying may be a little much, but Americans really DID feel that way in 1836, and the final battle is worth the wait
Everyone Chill Out! To make a Good Movie that is Historically Accurate is almost impossible. Look at Hacksaw Ridge, Tora, Tora, Tora, 55 Days in Peking or The Battle of Britain. A movie that was rigidly held to real chronological events, precisely the way the occurred would be boring. It would consist mainly of people arguing, whining and complaining or boasting. If you DO make a movie that is Historically Correct you end up with a Documentary. To make a movie that is Entertaining directors use as much “Artistic Expression” that they can get away with. Think of Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom in “Troy.” That film had almost nothing to do with “The Iliad” or Homer. It was entertaining but if I were the nation of Greece I would have sued. Remember in the novel the duel between Achilles and Hector was almost all about Achilles chasing Hector around the walls of Troy. How boring would that be?

"The Last Command" used the perspective of Jim Bowie. In this film, using the perspective of David Crockett w/ John Wayne in that role was a natural, safer money gamble. Producing a film is usually a high-stakes, high-risk play. If I had millions at the mercy of a fickle public, I would have gone w/ Wayne. Since Wayne produced the film, he had final say, but I believe personal $$$ was a more determining casting factor than ego for that role.

If you go to San Antonio, and see the cenotaph in Alamo Plaza, you will see names like Gonzales and Seguin on it. At the battle of San Jacinto, as the Texican army advanced, on the left flank, the battle cry was not, "Remember the Alamo!" but rather, "Recuerda el Alamo!"

This film, though it does have its moments, has not aged well and is generally not regarded as one of Wayne's better efforts--and I think rightly so. The first 3/4 of this overlong movie suffers from the kind of dull sermonizing displayed by this scene, and overall it is downright sanctimonious. Add to that the gross historical inaccuracies in the battle scenes near the film's end. The Duke's best work by far is from earlier in his career, with spectacular efforts such as The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Red River, Rio Grande, and of course the unforgettable The Searchers.

Except for Jimmy Stewart and Clark Gable, very few Hollywood stars who served wound up in combat. Two future actors who did serve, Richard Boone and Lee Marvin, had two things in common; both liked Wayne and both had horrible combat experiences that gave them PTSD which helped drive them to drink
