In this video the plug is removed the rest of the way from the old river path to the South of Edenville Dam. This plug was formed when the Edenville Earthen Embankment failed. This created the new river path as well as plugged the old river path. The old river path had an average depth of 6ft. After the plug was removed the water drained from the old river path down river. The next day the Fisher Contracting guys transported any trapped fish down river. The Edenville Dam is located on what used to be Wixom Lake. Wixom Lake is located in Mid Michigan. This footage was filmed on August 19, 2021. This was after the collapse of the Edenville Dam on May 19, 2020. Wixom Lake was rapidly rising due to heavy rainfall and the Edenville dam could not hold back the water. The side of the dam failed sending water rushing towards Sanford Village. Cool shot at 22:19 and a quiz question for the microbial ecology class: Why is this green, and why is this red. ...Pretty neat seeing effects of shade and nutrient in such a "small" space. Private property, but probably a great place to sample :)

It's so amazing to see how far they have come! Loved the fish you rescued. You'll have to try and catch it again! I really enjoy the excavation shots. Could watch all day long. Love those big machines! That engineering company is really incredible with the speed of restoration of this monumental project. I was noticing all of the fallen trees in the drone shot moving back to the dam. Will they be removed when the river path (drink) is restored? Stay safe and healthy out there! There is another project with a different contractor to remove the trees from this public area

Those zebra mussels are so DAM invasive!! I know how interesting it was to watch the work being done on Oroville dam here. To see it in person was somewhat over whelming because it so Large!! But we lucked out on that dam failure.

Jordan, if I had to guess, I'd say that 'L' shaped footing on the lake side of the dam was part of the coffer dam to direct the river thru the pass-thru while they built the spillways.

I was also thinking about trees. It would be great if the reforestation included only native trees.Trees like the Tulip Tree, Black Cherry, Red Maple,
Eastern Redbud, and Mountain Ash. Trees that give off a lot of color in the fall. It would be a great attraction for tourists. Bring people
to town to admire the scenery. Could be good for the local economy, too. Thanks!

@Randy Holy-Day Suggest you email your idea to the Four Lake Task Force which is the delegated authority managing the dam and lake restoration. You can find contact info on their website, I'm sure. Also email EGLE which is the MI agency that governs environmental control. Your suggestion for Fall color that would be achieved is quite wonderful and would bring in sightseers and revenues to the area. It's an area not located too far from major population areas of the State. Kudos!!

I think you mentioned it months ago, but I don’t remember now what was said, the question is, are the power houses coming down, if not, are they going to reuse them.
It would seem like a perfect time to take them out now, if not going to be used, because everything is now dry and prepped for work.

That circular baffle-looking thing is the disk of a butterfly valve. Most of the valve appears to be buried in sediment. It’s possible that it could still be used if the removed the mud from in front of it.
I believe those pass-thru gates were butterfly valves, like the throttle in a carburetor. They appeared to rotate on a vertical axis, which makes sense, since that would be the easiest way to operate them from someplace above.

When was this footage taken? On the live cams the eastern berm up against the retaining wall was removed at least a week ago.
This is definitely old news. The spillways have been demolished and the earthen berm at the wing wall is cleared already.
Earlier in the discussion @Allen Dodge nicely suggested Jordan time stamp his filming which he now may be considering after this. You know, Jordan may have a life besides his time spent documenting this historical event. He also comments he recently got access to the property also. Possibly Fisher Construction allowed only workers and designated safety observers on the property during the gate removal. Possibly he saw to buying and installing live cameras because he knew he would not be able to install everything. I'm pretty, too, that Jordan, a nice guy, will explain to you why there's a lag.
The dates are always posted in the description of when the footage was taken.
Good job saving that Pike. Can you video the biologists as they look for native mussels? Also, will they try to save more Pike and other fish that are not Carp?
I would if they were out there while I was filming. They saved approximately 15,000 fish and transferred them to the new river.
When all is said and done. Will the river go back to the old path? Or is it going to be directed to the new path? I'm sure you have mentioned it. I was just curious.

Those pass through gates are there to remove silt from the base of the dam. Just about every dam has them.
It's probably dumb of me for asking but it that dam going to be tore down and replaced with a new one?
The spillways have been tore down and will be rebuilt when that phase starts
Jordan, those two round gates at the bottom of the dam are for sediment control. They would be opened periodically to flush-out the sediment that accumulates at the bottom of the dam.
I feel terrible for all these people who paid premiums for lake front homes and now they’ve lost their most important feature - the lake!
@ DJ Cordes Lake dwellers will be getting their lakes back. That's the reason for all the work you see going on. All the dams will be rebuilt, different and more effective gates installed, and more safety built-in . For owners on two lakes, in a couple of years or so, they will have their lakes back. Edenville & Sanford dams longer... They're larger and more complicated dams and were damaged the most. Don't worry. Lake owners will have far better dams and safety than they have had for a very long time.
Why would you be in a hurry to put the river path back before you rebuild the dam. Seems like since it's dry it would be easier to work on.

It might be better to change your River descriptions: instead of “old river path “ maybe “Original river path “ and instead of “new river path “ maybe “flood path “. What you call the old river path will become the new path.
A whole new interpretation. If this is the case, I hope Jordan will adopt the use of your terminology. Yours is clearer to me, at this point. I hope Jordan chimes in on the point you're making.

The plan is to retrofit the powerhouse to pass flows. Eventually new spillways will be made when reconstruction begins
I know you say new, old, river path. But I forgot after 18 months of watching. Old means before the failures? Are they trying to restore the paths as they were before the failures? Then restoring the way things were before the failure? Great video by the way. Jayman...
I'm pretty sure that is what he is saying. I think the eventual goal is to restore the old dams so that they can again control the lake levels, and have the water flow in the previous path before the floods.

Wixom Lake use to have some serious pike before zebra muscles and milfoil invaded.

Once they fill in the 'new river path' towards the end of the whole rebuild, have they built into the budget a plan to replant all the trees that were knocked over and lost as part of a complete restoration?
Realistically, trees replant themselves. It just takes a few years for them to get big. But if the scrub in the former lake bottom is already 8 feet high, it shouldn't take very long for that stuff to regrow. What might be smart would be letting someone come in and log most of the deadfall to clean things up.
I imagine they'll plant grass to keep the soil from eroding and let nature do the rest.
@Copper Count on the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to be intimately and actively involved in addressing that nature destroyed is nature restored. That includes a proper environment for plants, trees, fish, and animals. They also have stringent permitting requirements for growing and living things on the lakes.
Good question. I havent asked what ground cover will go over the new river path when it is refilled

I don’t think that pike would make it to the new river path. They are using pumps to get the water over to the new path and that fish wouldn’t survive a trip through the pump.
Good point. Fisher and Spicer did manually transfer over a number of fish with the excavator bucket

R can people go to the falls while fisher is still working on edenville dam?
I have been hiking up the river from the m30 bridge to fish in the pools below the falls have caught a lot of bass in there and released them below the rapids. Still a lot of monster carp in the pools. The workerz have waved to me but never said anything. I think as long as you stay on the east side of their fence, stay off the road and stay out of their way you should be ok. The falls are really impressive. But they will be gone once they reroute the river. If you choose to go up there stay next to the river, stay out of their way and stay away from the dam. You should be ok.

No. It will be completely re engineered
They have removed all of the concrete from the spillway structure. They Re not removing the earthen fill portion of the dam, nor are they currently removing the powerplant. Over on the tobacco river portion of the dam they have also removed most of the spillways to allow the river to flow in 8ts original path

@@young11984 current funding is only for clean up and restoring the river path. Current plans calls for funding to be raised by charging residents of the (lake) 160,000 dollars apiece in additional taxes. Many class action suits are in the works to stop this unfair taxation. Unless funding can be found it will be difficult to rebuild the dams and restore the lakes. Many residents cannot afford this assessment and do not have property worth this much, meaning many residents including myself will be forced off of our property
@@allendodge398 so the county that approved dam and the lake are basically going to penalize the lake side property owners for them failing to maintain the dam they approved, sounds like “lake side” land owners should be suing the county/state for not maintaining their property values/aka lake instead of ripping them off with unlawful taxation like they do every year anyway. Property taxs is the biggest govt penalty for being a productive citizen, the more you work to have the more the penalize you for doing so

@Toxic Thun To date the designated agent for the two counties involved, Gladwin and Midland Counties, Four Lakes Task Force (FLTF) has raised $51-mil to pay for work to date. Homeowners have not had to pay in yet. NCRS, a department in the USDA, has paid 75% of erosion work with homeowners paying 25% of work rated as critical on their properties. The State of MI will soon vote on a bill to provide $290-mil to pay for the damages. In that case, homeowners would pay a few hundred dollars annually for dam maintenance. If the amount voted for falls short, homeowners will have an annual assessment to cover the rebuilding costs. FLTF maintains an extensive website that provides information on every aspect of dam restoration. They regularly publish a newsletter of updated information on dam restoration and issues. It is free, and you do not have to be a property owner. Sign up at the website.
