Van Life with Humpback Whales! Mission to an Isolated Canadian Island (Brier Island)

  • It was time for a dose of normality after an incredible first couple of weeks exploring the back roads and forests of Nova Scotia. Some packages that we ordered have finally arrived, although none of them in the same location! As we divert our travels to pick up our parcels, we explore the Acadian Shores of Nova Scotia and finally make our way to the remote Brier Island - taking two ferries to get there and witnessing one of the most magical sights we have seen - humpback whales breaching and jumping out of the ocean.

We're Chesca and Ben, and with our two pups River & Scout (🐶 🐶 ) we live and travel full-time in our self converted sprinter van, Sophia. We spent the past 2 years road tripping as much of Europe as we could, from the wild coasts of Portugal to the Syrian border in Turkey, tackling lockdowns and a van re-build along the way. But now, we're feeling like a new challenge. In the summer of 2022, we'll be shipping our van from the UK to Canada, on a mission to drive her all the way to Mexico baby! 🇲🇽 🌵

As a Nova Scotian, I can’t express enough how much I’m loving this series!! Thank you for showing others how beautiful and vast our corner of the country is. We’re often overlooked and forgotten, and it’s lovely to see others come enjoy it as much as we do! Safe travels!

Hey Sarah! Honestly this comment means so much to us, thank you. We try our best to show the magic and beauty of the places we visit, and Nova Scotia has been a dream. It will always hold a special place in our hearts as the first stop on our big road trip, and also just because of how bloody beautiful it is! We have a few weeks left here, so get comfy and ready for plenty more Atlantic adventures 🤗 xx

The beauty of Nova Scotia and Atlantic provinces is their undevelopment. And that is how we love it and how we want it to stay. Nova Scotia is Canadas 2nd smallest province and the most densely populated province with approximately 1 million inhabitants. Cape Breton Island is recognized as one of the most beautiful island in the world…which says a lot when you consider it’s a higher position than Hawaiian Islands.

Greetings to you both (and the dogs) I've lived in Nova Scotia all my life (so far) and I love the series. I liked your info on the French Shore. My original ancestor landed at Port Royal in 1646 and about 110 years later his great grandson and his family (one of the founding families of Grande Pré ) were kicked out by the British. They sneaked back in a few years later and stayed. A quick note about the boulders around Peggy's Cove. 10,000-70,000 years ago, most of Nova Scotia was covered by glacier, several kilometres thick. The ice scratched and gouged the granite and left boulders, rocks and sand behind. A lot of the boulders left behind when the ice receded were carried here by the flowing ice from parts of Northern Quebec. I have all kinds of Nova Scotia trivia and as anyone that knows me can tell you, I talk too much. Any way, thanks for coming to our little corner of the world and thanks for the great series.

My wife and I were at the same spot your RV was parked on Brier Island 3 years ago and we couldnt believe the number of sea birds there either. If you walked down that path through the tall grass it takes you to a bluff and cliff face where we must have seen thousands and thousands of them. I think they were nesting in the rock faces. Very beautiful......and loud!!. Glad the fog finally rolled out for you. Shame for you to miss the full views of the island. New subscriber here, great vids you guys. keep it up.

Wow nice, I've been out on a Brier Island whalewatch a number of times and you were lucky to see a few breaches. You almost always see Humpbacks though. For those interested in birds, the whale watching tours can be fantastic for them from Aug-Oct. Sometimes you can see 10's of thousands of phalaropes flying around out there. To bad about your parcel mix-up but go have a lunch and a few brews on the waterfront and it will half make up for it,

    • @OverlandingSophia

I can imagine, there were SO many there when we both went out. I can't believe Ben got to see so many breaching and jumping and flapping around, they looked like they were having the best time. The bird life there is crazy too, all of those birds sat on the water and flying in the channel.. there must have been a thousand of them easily!

I just happened discovered your channel tonight while you're in NOVA SCOTIA! I live here born and raised, and I'm loving the series so far. Just an idea, if you guys are fans of "Doner Kebabs" like they make in Turkey, I'm going to suggest you try getting a "Donair" sometime before you leave Nova Scotia, there's tons of little pizza places that sell them. But if I may suggest, "Acropole Pizza" in either Truro, or New Glasgow sell the best ones, and you will not be disappointed with the portion sizes, they're huge and delicious! Little bit of extra history for you, since you may stop down there on your continent wide travels. The acadians were actually put on ships and dropped in groups all along the eastern coast. It was the english's attempt to basically break up the people. The largest group of them though, were basically dumped into the swamps in louisanna. As you may have guessed now, but the 'cajun's' there are the decendants of the acadians.
