I agree. We all forgive TGV's love for nato's and various straps, but luxury divewatches like these belong on their bracelets, or at least should be reviewed with them.
Let's face it the "in-house" movement is all about controlling the service and parts availability and therefore... service MARKUP! Personally (IMHO) I am happy to own the Tudor pre in-house with ETA, it is very refreshing and freeing to know I can go to my local reliable watch repair shop when I require a service for my Black Bay and not get raked over the coals through the dealer! ETA parts will always be available where OEM in-house parts will not be available to outside dealers. You have to find a trustworthy repair shop and once you do this to me is the way to go long term for a watch of this caliber. Then with the black bay pre-inhouse, there is indeed the rose, as well to me, an X-factor and romance of its own in this watch!
I personally wouldn't hesitate to buy the one with the new movement, but I don't think in-house is as meaningful in a tool watch with a solid case back. I just want a watch like this to be reliable and, as you point out, easy to service. If it's a JCL or something, I want a movement that's a beauty to look at.
+100. The more I think about it, I would much prefer to not be spending $700 every few years to service a $3000 watch. In fact, there is a reason Rolex is able to sell these Tudor's (even with in house movements) for so little....and it's because they know they will make their money on the back end of the transaction.
Even if that were the case, it really almost doesn't matter. If one were actually pressed, with so many ETA movements floating around, cannibalizing another watch for parts starts to make sense good sense. If one were really that worried about it, buying a spare ETA movement or two today to keep in reserve would also be a possibility.
Overall a great comparison. However you called the movement in the Black Bay a "standard" ETA. It is anything but standard. They started with the Top grade ETA movement and the Tudor modified that movement further. It is an incredibly reliable movement. The ETA BBs will only increase in value.
It is true. It isn't a std ETA or even elaborate ETA. What Tudor does is take the top grade ETA (which has all the compartments for COSC ETA) and Rolex modifies this up to 5 points i believe? My BB runs around 2 seconds a day, well within COSC specs (and even Rolex specs which are +5/-3). Nothing to sneeze at imo. I would give the movement an 8 instead of a 7. This isn't your normal ETA.
Bro you are delusional .... eta sucks balls ... they are very cheap and bad movements .... the seiko even has a better movement. The new movements are million times better
@@andyreiter6253 Some of the highest end watches, beyond Rolex, have used various models of modified ETA movements. I own both watches in this video, and a GS snowflake. The top grade 2824-2 has a proven track record for reliability.
I've made the mistake before thinking that became a watch cost more that I'd like it more. I purchased a Omega Planet Ocean titanium (with a retail price on Omega's site of $8,000) I ended up selling the PO and purchasing an Omega SMP ceramic (retailing at $4400 on Omega's website) I find myself enjoying the SMP so much more! Just because you pay more money for a watch doesn't mean it's going to have that special something that makes you put it on everyday. Thought I'd share that with you watch lovers. If you can love a watch that cost half the price, their is nothing wrong with it.
I’ve recently bought the in house BB and I love it. It’s unbelievable value for money and actually available to buy. Also it keeps perfect time. I think it’s even more accurate than my DateJust 41. By the way, the Sub score is 96. Great video as always.
Two good watches by the same parent company, Rolex wins in the criteria that you measured the two watches. Why? Because the Gov.'nor says so. That intro is simply stupendous, I really enjoyed this video!
Nice video. In my view, the Submariner is the greatest wristwatch in history. The Tudor Black Bay actually looks very nice on the distressed leather strap it comes with.
TGV great vid as always! One question: what do you think about working out or training with a "tool watch" like the tudor or the subby? Surely they could take the abuse and shock of the gym or let's say a triathlon? Cheers!
Just picked up the Tudor featured in this comparison. The Tudor just seems to exude more class and the design is just different enough to stand on its own. Love the Tudor rose after spending many years in Europe and traveling to the UK gaining a historical appreciation for the symbolism. It’s a little thinner than its 2016 successor and really is the goldilocks of the genre in my humble opinion. Fantastic everyday watch that I won’t be bothered if it gets a little weathered. Great video TGV!
Hey TGV, I saw you on the street yesterday, I hope I did not scare you, but I could not let the chance go to acknowledge your work. I am a huge fan of what you do. Thank you for the all your posts.
Tiago! Nice to put a name to the face. Very nice to meet you too, thank you so much for the support. Are you on the Facebook? Next month I am planning a get-together here in Astoria of patrons and fans of the channel. It would be great meet you properly and chat watches. Will keep you posted. Thanks again, Best regards, TGV
Still really like your old videos that helped me through difficult times by giving me some distraction and inspired me to create my own little channel! AND: I‘ve finally added the burgundy ETA BB to my collection (so my BB Chrono isn’t alone anymore). Keep up the great work. Greetings from Germany
Hey TGV I am looking to acquire an oris aquis date 40mm grey dial and bezel but they are no longer on jomashop, do you recommend a different seller? Best regards, Alfonzo
This video is outstanding. And I am very much enjoying your growth since making this your profession. Your love for Tudor shows clearly but your professionalism and duty to give a fair comparison with the facts you had available make your judgement valid and for an independent one, credible. I would not be surprised if Tudor were to someday thank you for assisting in the boost of their marketing. Also watching you read from notes to ensure minimal "slips" , deserves a huge Thank You from us whom not only view but value your opinions and sometimes depend on your words when making a purchase. Keep up the good work and other than the vids with you and Fed, please consider more vids on your life, thoughts and being a true gentleman.
Good review, can't afford either one. How would you compare a Seiko SKX 173 to the high end ones. I don't dive but I do Kayak and Fish and would like a good sturdy dependable tool.
Keep up the great work TGV! Loving your videos more and more. Love your intros now. Really looking great. This is the first time I've left a comment after watching TH-cam for so many years. Says a lot about how impressed I am with your videos. :)
Hi and contrats for your vidéos. I have a question. I ´m thinking about buying my first diver. What would recommend between the longines Hydroconquest 41mm blue and the newest Hamilton khaki navy frogman 42mm blue model? I have a USD 1100 budget and they are both on the same range of'quality aren't they, unless'you have another model to suggest. thanks in advance and once again congrats for you youtube channel
Hi,TGV I have a ceramic submariner myself but struggle to get a tool to remove the strap - could you point me in the right direction so I can start considering putting it on a Nato. regards Phil
Great video! On your classifications, how about changing 'design' to 'functionality', might clear up the confusion with the 'style' classification. Looking forward to the next video!
The Urban Gentry have you done a video on the mini sub? I don't necessarily mind having one since my wrists are similar to yours. I feel like I would have something that you wouldn't see on other people very often. Kind of cool:)
Excellent review! Still yearning for the 16610LV Submariner, but the good news is, when I'm ready for the Blackbay, it'll have that in-house MT5602 with a 70 hour powerreserve. Well done, TGV!
I honestly think that you are great. I recently started watching your channel, because I myself am in love with watches and think your advice is awesome. Rock on, TGV!
Thank you so much Francis, very kind of you to say and I am deeply honoured. It is people like you that are the reason I make videos. Best regards, TGV
TGV could I respectfully suggest a GMT diver dual between the Grand Seiko Spring Drive GMT SBGE001 and either the Omega Planet Ocean GMT and/or your Rolex GMT. Cheers Tim from Australia.
Well, I would LOVE to review it. Not into bronze myself BUT, I cant judge it until I experience it. Certainly would be fun to review. Thank you, Best regards, TGV
TGV, I am really torn between getting the Tudor S&G (David Beckham) watch and the Rolex Submariner, as my first luxury watch. I am more lean towards the Tudor, due to the price, however I am not sure in the near future I would regret my choice. Which one should I get?
Thank you for your videos, I got into watches this year and after binge watching your content and after acquiring an SKX007 and a SARB033, I've caught the bug! My Tudor Black Bay Red with the ETA is coming in the mail soon and I'm unbelievably excited! Keep up the good work to steer newbies like myself towards real watches and away from fashion brands.
I though that too, I recently tried on both the Black Bay and SMP and found the Tudor to came across as far better built. I don't know if it was an over used display model but the SMP had the worst bezel action I've ever seen, it had massive play in it and didn't even line up at 12 correctly. Although it has an inferior insert the Tudor bezel action is impeccable. I preferred the Tudor bracelet too, the SMP is legendary for its comfort but it's very fussy and outdated looking imo. I also tried on the new Seamaster 300 and it's quality was in a completely different league to both.
The thickness of the Rolex comes in the case back and does not extend all the way to the sides of the case as it does with the Tufor. The Tudor therefore "appears" thicker and is chunkier.
Both lovely, lovely watches.Tudor are so underrated and it is a great watch for the money. However,we all know the Submariner is an absolute icon, whether with the date,or not. Love your video, even if I have been late in catching up with it ! Keep well and stay safe.
Louis CK used to wear his Submariner during his stand up comedy which he did in his black t-shirt and it got so many people talking about his watch even though it was never specifically mentioned or featured in the shoe's story. The watch steals the spotlight without even it ever getting mentioned just as he wears it. That just goes to show you can see quality from a distance. Also speaks a ton about its versatility.
Such a hard fought battle. I think you got it right, the Tudor has that vintage look and appeal to it that is hard to put a finger on. Loved the duel but I think I'd pick the Sub for the Prestige & Heritage. Ciao!
Great video as usual! Ever going to give us your insight as to where to buy used watches? Ebay etc.. Saw your video on what to look for in used watches, would like to know where you and others go for used watches. Thanks
People always say that the Rolex isn't worth the more than double premium over the Tudor. Watching this video, it really justifies its price admirably. Stunning Subby!
Another great video, TGV! One thing people often overlook in the ceramic v aluminum bezel debate is cost of repair. While an aluminum bezel is easier to damage, it is also easy and cheap to replace the insert. A ceramic is less likely to be damaged, but it's not indestructible. Repairing one is quite expensive. That aspect almost comes down to personal preference.
I have just recently started watching your channel and really enjoy the info that you present as well as your appreciation of the history of timepieces. Two questions have arisen while I have watched that you or a veteran fan can inform me on: Of all the manufacturers reviewed, I have not heard mention of Tag Heuer. Any reason for this? I am curious since my collection base piece is a TAG Aquaracer, and I really love that piece. Second, I am currently living in Japan (specifically Okinawa). Do you or anyone have tips on either venues or brands to take advantage of while I am here? You mentioned buying in Japan on several occasions and I am thinking of trying to add some Seikos or Orient Stars to my collection. I appreciate any feedback if any of you have experience buying here.
I'm trying my new BB on while watching your vid. Loving both (the watch and the vid). Does wearing the BB makes you want to eat dark chocolate and drink wine? Or is it just me who have this weird way to link a watch with food or certain experience?
BBR is the wrong buy for "investment." The BBB ETA movement was far lower volume and better preserves the look of those original Tudor Subs. If there's investment value in the ETA BB's it's in the BBB not the BBR.
in my opinion, all the classic BB's will increase in price in the future, any watch that is no longer made can increase in price despite the amount produced, the dial alone on the classic BB is very much sought after and I do not see that changing ever, the rose and smiley face are very unique in the sense that no new BB will come with them. I agree the BBB will appreciate the most, but I can see all the classic ones appreciating in value in the coming years.
Bit of an unfair comparison given their price points. Of course the Tudor is going to lose all day long. You can get a very nice small collection of watches for the cost of that sub.
Great video ! People complain about tag however the Aquaracer has the same movement as the Tudor however the tag has ceramic bezel and 300m and comes in a lot cheaper . I understand the Tudor has that heritage and "romance" factor so can see the appeal . Great work though!
Perfect comparison. I have been obsessing about the Rolex Submariner all my adult life. The Rolex purchase has always been pushed aside due to its higher cost. In its place I have purchased and kept an Omega Seamaster, an Omega Speedmaster, countless Tissots and a pile of Citizens and a few Seikos. I've been eyeing the obvious alternative, the Tudor Black Bay. I will be purchasing a brand new 2015 Tudor Black Bay with in house movement for just a bit under $6,000 Canadian dollars. For me this will be a very much welcomed and cherished addition to my collection. I'm genuinely appreciate your review TGV! With this review you've basically sealed the deal on this watch, I'll be picking up this watch in Vancouver in January 2017! The Rolex can wait a bit longer :-) Many thanks to you for your review, awesome job!!! Sincerely, Benjamin M W 😃👍
Fantastic duel! The BB fought well, but the ceramic Sub it's pretty unbeatable, I just love that piece so much. I just hope I'll own both these pieces with the difference of the BB, because I prefer the blue, and I'll probably go in house. Really, great work indeed. Best regards, Michele.
I just rewatched this cos I've owned the black bay (with the in-house movement) for a couple of months now and I gotta say, I'd give it a 10/10 for the x factor. There's just something about it. And I do get a lot of compliments on this timepiece. Anyway, still a great comparison.
Forever the Tudor's lot in life to be compared to the Rolex. Like coming home from community college to hear your mom rave about your cousin at Harvard. Good one, TGV.
Excellent review video! Having own both the Tudor Black Bay and the Rolex sub 16013, I have to said I love both. You cant be wrong with either one. I would say which one suit your budget best then that is the one to go for. Tudor has indeed successfully created an "affordable Rolex" for the market with its own DNA.
Duel of two cousins with predictable outcome. Very proper rating and really can't see any category where Tudor can surpass Sub, with exception of versatility. Yet, I am craving Tudor more and more every day. I do have no date sub and I love it, but Tudor is becoming little bit of obsession, especially with new in-house movements. Blue Pelagos keeps coming into my dreams... There is something exciting about Tudor and something little bit boring about Rolex sub... I don't know if you understand what I mean. Another great video, with two beautiful watches, great evaluation and very proper rating. BIG LIKE as usual.
TGV, how about renaming the "Design" category to an unambiguous word like "Utility" or "Function"? That way you don't have to explain every time you do a review, which I've noticed on 4 or 5 occasions now I think. Hope this suggestion is helpful! As always, I love the enthusiasm and knowledgeability of the reviews and I'm planning on getting that Tudor for my next purchase! Ciao! ☺😊😆
TGV, I think that you had the insight during the video: Tudor brand is targeted at Omega, with similar pricing. The watches have been designed and priced to not challenge Rolex (which is good brand management by Rolex Co.).
The Rolex Sub is like that drop dead gorgeous blond in the slinky black dress that you just know you don't stand a chance in hell with. To me the Tudor is like the smoking hot girl in a ball cap and jeans that maybe has just a little too square of a chin or something. That girl is the one I desire more, because I think maybe she doesn't know how attractive she really is and so I may have a chance. For my hard-earned dollars I'm going with the Tudor. If I win the lottery tomorrow....sure..bring on the Rolexes.
I'd like to give a car analogy that everyone can relate to. Porsche and Audi are both VW Group. Rolex and Tudor are the same company. Purchase decision will come down to budget. Porsche is like Rolex. The DNA does not change year on year. Audi is like Tudor. They are more experimental with the design as with the Audi R8. If you have the budget buy the Submariner. If not, purchase the Black Bay. Just like you would buy a 911 GT3 if you have the budget, but the RS4 if not. Submariner has got the Ceramic bezel, surgical grade steel, precious white gold on key parts to reduce petina, special hairspring to reduce effect of magnetism, glide lock for comfort fit, etc. Most importantly, what is a watch for? New Submariner 114060 has Rolex accuracy of plus and minus 2 seconds per day. More accurate than COSC certification. If you have the budget get the 911 GT3, otherwise the RS4 is still a superb car. Same analogy. This goes with investment as well. The 911 GT3 manual has gone up in value astronomically, as have special versions of vintage Submariners. Vintage RS4 and ETA Black Bay will possibly appreciate in value, but not like the former.
JC24 your premise is flawed insofar as personal taste play a diminished role in your analogy. As an owner of 2 Porsche I can assure you that I would sooner buy an R 10 than a Turbo Macan S
I disagree here - you see Audis everywhere on the roads but you hardly see a Tudor on prople's wrists; if anything, Rolexes are more seen than Tudors! As per the classic GSElevator Tweet; "Wearing a Rolex is like driving an Audi. It says you've got money, but nothing to say."
A real shame is that the new Tudor with the MT5602 in-house movement comes with a less appealing dial. They replaced the rose with a less attractive shield and the arched bottom text is now a straight line. It lost some of the character that TGV's piece really has...
I know its a old movie, but I love the fact that a watch 1/3th the price of the rolex is competing so closely to the Rolex
Would have liked to see both watches on they're respective bracelet.
I agree. We all forgive TGV's love for nato's and various straps, but luxury divewatches like these belong on their bracelets, or at least should be reviewed with them.
....especially the new BB Rivet style bracelet. SWEET!
Robbie O'Dell - I think everyone knows how the Oyster bracelets wear - excellent. No review needed.
correct. their bracelets dont need to be reviewed. they work well!

Even if that were the case, it really almost doesn't matter. If one were actually pressed, with so many ETA movements floating around, cannibalizing another watch for parts starts to make sense good sense. +John Salevurakis True. I even wondered if you really go in a pinch if you could just use sw200 parts
The Tudor Black Bay is a beautiful watch,I like much more then the Rolex look's wise.

Great review, bought the inhouse Tudor Heritage for my collection. Your advice has been invaluable in starting my collection !
How would be end your comparison with the new models in special with the new Burgundy 2023? ☺️
Keep up the good work to steer newbies like myself towards real watches and away from fashion brands.
a duel between and rolex submariner and the tudor pelagos would be very interesting and, I would imagine, a closer run race
The Omega SMP ceramic/Black Bay duel would have been something. I'd choose the SMP over the black bay any day personally.
I love the intro! Excellent video TGV.
Thank you Ryan,

TGV
The Tudor and the ceramic sub are the same thickness aren't they? So why do you knock the Tudor, yet like the "chunkiness" of the sub? Just wondering.
Great choice of epic intro duel music :)
Thank you,

huh he replied im so excited
Editing on all his vids is tight.
Does anyone know when the Tudor Heritage Black Bay 36 will be available for sale ?
I think they are starting to go on sale now, I saw a few members of the Urban Gentry Facebook group posting WWCs of them.
Thank you,

+The Urban Gentry Thank you ! It might be the perfect watch for a guy I know that has a successful watch channel on TH-cam . 36mm is PERFECT !!!
Great video TGV! Really enjoyed this one 👍
Thank you! So glad! :D

Any idea on when the in-house movement is going to hit stores?
TGV ..... Keep Rocking...... Once's again startup music.... N video editing... N of course watch review..... Excellent Work....!!👍🏻
Thank you Ketan, very kind.

May i ask you , have you sold the Omega seamaster? I think it compares much better to the Sub.
I sold it several SOTC videos ago. I also did a duel with it against the Sub.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Brilliant video!! Keep them coming :-)
Ciao!
Fantastic video. Really enjoyed this comparison. Two of the best watches available today. Cheers, TGV!
Thank you Jack, so glad, and I totally agree, I didn't even think of that but very true! Spot on.
Best regards,
TGV
Nice duel !
I really like your introductions with the watches turning ... what do you use to make that ?
Anyway, looking forward to the next video :-)
Always excited to see a new video Tristano. Too bad the new video notification doesn't work.
Thank you, sorry to hear that, youtube sometimes does that, to me too!
Very annoying but glad you got here regardless,
Best regards,
TGV
Very true, so considering this, both have their pros and cons, comes down to preference I guess.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
I wish you are comparison with bracelet version of tudor
I have just recently started watching your channel and really enjoy the info that you present as well as your appreciation of the history of timepieces. Two questions have arisen while I have watched that you or a veteran fan can inform me on:
Of all the manufacturers reviewed, I have not heard mention of Tag Heuer.
I suggest a dual of the Cartier Tank and the JLC Reverso..... can you make it happen?
Certainly can. Thanks for watching,
Best regards,
TGV
Great review and the intro was top class.
Thank you Josh!

BBR is the wrong buy for "investment." The BBB ETA movement was far lower volume and better preserves the look of those original Tudor Subs. If there's investment value in the ETA BB's it's in the BBB not the BBR.
Totally agree.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
in my opinion, all the classic BB's will increase in price in the future, any watch that is no longer made can increase in price despite the amount produced, the dial alone on the classic BB is very much sought after and I do not see that changing ever, the rose and smiley face are very unique in the sense that no new BB will come with them. I agree the BBB will appreciate the most, but I can see all the classic ones appreciating in value in the coming years.
I just caught myself unintentionally trying to say the ending 'ciao' in unison with you again :)
LOL :D
Love it!
Thank you Paulus.
Best regards,
TGV
Bit of an unfair comparison given their price points. Of course the Tudor is going to lose all day long. You can get a very nice small collection of watches for the cost of that sub.
Great video !
People complain about tag however the Aquaracer has the same movement as the Tudor however the tag has ceramic bezel and 300m and comes in a lot cheaper . I understand the Tudor has that heritage and "romance" factor so can see the appeal . Great work though!
Should i go with BB black or red?
Ken Blue
Ken red all day
Perfect comparison. The Rolex can wait a bit longer :-)
Many thanks to you for your review, awesome job!!!
Sincerely,
Benjamin M W 😃👍
Eggs Benny - If you want a fun watch with terrific history, try the Bulova Moon Watch. Incredible watch for minimal money.

Is this video inspired by ABlogToWatch's recent article comparing the Black Bay and No-Date Sub?
LOL, just poetic timing, I just saw the article today, I film most of this over the weekend.
Thanks for watching,

TGV
Fantastic duel! The BB fought well, but the ceramic Sub it's pretty unbeatable, I just love that piece so much.
I just hope I'll own both these pieces with the difference of the BB, because I prefer the blue, and I'll probably go in house.
Really, great work indeed.
Best regards,
Michele.
I just rewatched this cos I've owned the black bay (with the in-house movement) for a couple of months now and I gotta say, I'd give it a 10/10 for the x factor. There's just something about it. And I do get a lot of compliments on this timepiece. Anyway, still a great comparison.
Tristano, What about an Speedmaster vs the navitimer?
Speed master takes the cake. The movement is impeccable. But just my 2 cents lol
Already did that deal ;-)
Enjoy! Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
he's actually already done this, just search it up, I've been a longtime fan and didn't find out til yesterday
Great video as always! How about a duel between the Rolex GMT Master II and it's price-point rival, the Omega Seamaster 600m GMT?
Forever the Tudor's lot in life to be compared to the Rolex. Like coming home from community college to hear your mom rave about your cousin at Harvard. Good one, TGV.
LOL, great comment,
Thank you,

TGV
Great vid as always, my wife hates our (expensive) hobby lol, but enjoys your channel as do I. Keep up with the great work mate!
LOL Thank you, very kind.

Thank you Mike, gotta love the underdog. Excellent comment as always.
Best regards,
TGV
Franck Marzilli
Here here. Very true.
Now that the new Tudor movement is COSC certified and has a longer power reserve than the Sub, it would be interesting to see a rematch
JC24
The VW group dont own Porsche. They do own Bentley though.
Ogotuwa Obuto sorry, that is wrong. VW does own Porsche
You just compared one luxury category to another luxury category. Not really something "everyone" can relate to.
i choose the BB, im a sucker for the design of the tudor for like 2 years now :) I do love the Lex also btw (y)
A real shame is that the new Tudor with the MT5602 in-house movement comes with a less appealing dial. They replaced the rose with a less attractive shield and the arched bottom text is now a straight line. It lost some of the character that TGV's piece really has...
It's always good to have plenty of options. Whilst i'm not a fan of the new dial i think it was the right move to make.
Tell me about it. People are snapping them up everywhere.
Harry Ireland
I far prefer the new dial and shield.
Harry Ireland - Tudor can't please everyone.
The sub has to be a no date.
can u please review the maurice lacroix pontos s and pontos diver
