    A handy hint for your scan n cut mats, I use paper to mask the edges and spray with basting spray, let it dry and the mat is good as new again, near 4 years on I’m still using my original 2 mats

    • @dorisosborne132
      @dorisosborne132 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you say use paper to mask the edges. Are you talking about the fabric edges you put paper then spray basting spray on the paper before you place on fabric edge’s. Thank you for a reply.

    • @admnz78
      @admnz78 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@dorisosborne132 - hi, this is for making the mat tacky again, the paper covers the edges of the mat, ie the parts I don’t want sticky, this protects it from the spray so only the middle get coated.

    I wish I had seen your video before. Today I did my first applique!!. It was a disaster. I put heat and bond light on the back of main fabric and placed it on the sdx fabric mat, not realising I should have taken the paper off first before placing the fabric on the mat. Oh dear, it was a complete mess. Took me ages to clean the mat and at the time I wasn’t even sure what I had done wrong. Now I know thanks to you.xx

    I love your Design they look absolutely amazing, your video was great thank you very much for sharing.😀 I must say I love my brother scan and cut. 🌼 I give a mat just for fabric and label it fabric, there is fabric support sheet from brother, it should come with the machine tho, its the same size as your mat so you can put that on your old mat and your mat will be useable again, you can just leave it on and change the sheet when necessary, it holds fabric well. I have a dedicated blade just for fabric and that helps them last a lot longer. Hope you dont mind me putting this, just thought it might help someone 😀 and a way to keep your old mat😅😅🌻 Thank you for the video and taking the time to make it.

    I just bought the new Scan N Cut DX with the "F" at the end of the number. I have not opened it yet because I want to BE SURE it can cut fabric that has the applique adhesive (heat and bond or other) on the back of it. I watched a lady who said you could not cut fabric that has adhesive on it with the "F" machine. Do you know about the new machine? Also, were you putting the fabric side down or the adhesive side down on that mat?

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joy, I'd love to see the video you mentioned and to see why they say you can not have a fusible on your fabric. I don't have this machine, but I just looked at the specs. There is an Auto blade....and then a Thin Auto Blade. It looks like when using the thin auto blade, it only cuts fabric for piecing, so no fusible. But the regular auto blade cuts up to 3mm thickness......so why can't use use this blade for cutting fusible applique?? Because applique is one of my favorite quilting techniques, this would be a deal breaker for me if this wasn't an option. Since you have the machine I'd call directly to Brother and ask the source to verify :) and I laid my pieces, fusible side down on my mat.

    • @nanniemaeminer6882

      Just an FYI there is another couple of ladies that I've been watching as well and they both put their print side of their fabric on the mat with the heat and bond with paper still on it up then peel the paper off after they've cut their pieces. Their technique seems to work well for them.

    I love your videos! This brother scan and cut was my first cutting machine... I've added on with others and it hasn't gotten to use that it should lately but I'll have to crack it out to do this project. I also just started with my Bernina 700 and I am loving it so far! Just one quick question... I have that extreme glue that I've used for other projects but does it really hold without any stitching? And it's machine washable? Or do we really need to top Stitch through it? Glad I found you I've learned so very much!

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching my video Nancy! Hmm......I've never used the extreme glue without stitching down the applique....I'm thinking the edges would fray over time. I think using HeatnBond Lite and stitching gives me the best application, however if you want to avoid stitching all together try using HeatnBond in the red package :)

    If you do not have the SGV file I think that’s the name of it, can you scan the design let’s say a butterfly from a die line of an appliqué and then it will cut on that die line? I’m sorry I’ve had Machine for a while now and I am intimidated by it also! Your video was awesome I’m going to order your stocking and try to make it just like you!

    I enjoyed the video. I don’t have this scan and cut system but it looks great. I was interested in the backing being used for binding. Great job. I watched that part twice but didn’t hear how much backing to leave around the outside..it appears two inches..one inch folded first then over onto the quilt. Do you always use the same amount of fabric for the binding..the two inches on each side? Thanks.

I’m not sure what the “SVG” file is exactly 🤷‍♀️I don’t have a scanning mat one didn’t come with my machine can I use my low tack mat to scan & do I need to put the clear sheet over it that I would normally take off to cut ?.

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's exciting Sherry!! Yes, you can trace an image...scan it and then cut it. The svg is a file format for the image.....it plots it out telling the cutting blade a direction to go, like a road map :) I don't have a scanning mat either. Sometimes I put my paper in a clear page protector, like for binders. That way the copy paper doesn't stick to the mat.
