What an excellent film this is. Tense. Visually striking. Great analysis. Thank you.

Lillian Gish and Robert Mitchum singing against each other.
In the film Whales of August, an AD came up and was explaining to her about how a close up was going to be done. She was gracious about it, but Bette Davis snapped at him "you don't need to explain a close up to Miss Gish. She invented them."

It's pronounced more like Caah yays du Cinayma.

The Leaning on the Everlasting Arms duet is another stunning scene for sure. Thanks for the terrific story about Whales of August as well. I definitely need to see that film at one day as there were so many terrific actors in it during the twilights of their careers. My brother just went and saw the film Thelma yesterday and we were talking about that movie in a similar fashion (I'm guessing it's a different type of movie than The Whales of August though) as it gave acting leads to several actors in their 80s and 90s and that is indeed rare.

I love your enthusiasm for this glorious film. Just so you know: Laughton (Lawton) and Agee (A-G, slight emphasis on the first syllable).

Those are both pretty well-known people with well-documented name pronunciations. I'm not starting off with great confidence after hearing that.

@@annburlingham4563 The enthusiasm for this amazing movie is paramount; that is the important thing. And I daresay Charles L. would have been thrilled to know of a young fan.

I had texted my dad before finishing the video asking him how to pronounce Laughton's last name, and, unfortunately, he advised me it was loft-ton and not law-ton. I definitely could have tried to watch a few more documentary videos on Laughton as that's where you'll hear the pronunciations. For this video, I rewatched Night of the Hunter a couple more times, researched the real crimes of Harry Powell and read a book on the lonely hearts killer. I try my hardest on pronunciations, but that tends to be where I'll spend the least amount of preparation time. I appreciate you supporting the channel and hope you did enjoy the video though.

@@whenthepicturesgotbigger Enjoyed the vid, encourage you to keep up the great work, and may you help others to see this great and under-appreciated works. (Agee is an interesting dude. No crimes, of course, but a respected novelist, poet, screenwriter, film critic...) There is even an amazing work composed by Samuel Barber, KNOXVILLE, SUMMER OF 1915, which is a beautiful setting of some of Agee's text form A DEATH IN THE FAMILY. Here is a fine version by Dawn Upshaw: th-cam.com/video/Gjwm4od-Upc/w-d-xo.html

I haven’t seen Night of the Hunter (1955) but I know it’s on Criterion and Del Toro talked about this film on Adventures in moviegoing and he recommended it on both his Twitter and a Letterboxd list.

Definitely post your thoughts if you do watch it in the future. It's well worth your time.

One of the comtemporary critics (Ebert?) said something like "this is the purest definition of evil in the history of the movies". As for you, my usual Brazilian congratulations are for bringing to a N.oft.H video the hottest discussion of every December: is Die Hard a Christmas movie? 🤣

Who's more evil - Hans Gruber or Preacher Harry Powell? I'll definitely vote for the latter!

Just curious but what is an actor you love that everyone else hates?
