What Can We Learn From the Second Oscars?

  • The second Academy Awards should perhaps instead be called the final stand against silent films. The Jazz Singer had been released not even two years earlier, but already the film industry was barreling towards a world without Chaplin and Pickford. Because of that, it means this second ceremony is full of misfires and movies that make you question what Hollywood could possibly be thinking... but that's what makes it so fascinating to study! In this video, we're going to learn everything there is to know about the second Oscars, and I promise you that it is more than you think!

    It looks like I made a typo around the 1:40 mark! "Best Diretor" obviously refers to "Best Director"... my mistake! Beyond that error, what did you think of the video? And what future ceremonies should I cover? I am planning on doing a poll soon where you can help me decide just that, and so if you want to take part, make sure you're subscribed to the channel so that you don't miss it. Thank you for watching :)

    Really interesting video, looking forward to more of this series. The Patriot is one of the lost films that I would most love to see turn up one day. Lubitsch in Hollywood was known mostly for his witty comedies, but in Germany he had showed a dab hand at making big-scale historical epics as well, like Madame DuBarry. I read somewhere that Lubitsch and Cecil B. DeMille sort of followed opposite career paths: DeMille started out making sophisticated comedies before becoming famous for his historical epics, while with Lubitsch it was the other way around.

    Ok stop it already! Youre work is too entertaining, too informative. I couldnt stop watching and now I'm late for an appointment. Youtubing will not be accepted as an excuse so now i have to throw myself down a flight of stairs. Great work as usual and ive learned something vitally important. Not only do i want to see Dynamite, i want a faithful remake as soon as possible.

    Your video essays are quite impressive. I'm positive these videos will be a slow burn with the views and subscribers and climb to great heights in time. Ive always been interested in old time Hollywood, especially the silent era it feels like a different world.
    I look forward to your next video.

    found your channel today, and i just watched this video and the one on the first ceremony in a row. both really good and ill definitely be tuning on for all the others!! my favorite 1929 movie didn't get any nominations, it's called lady of the pavement. also my favorite silent movie in general. someone on letterboxd described it as a demented version of pygmalion and it really is just that. it's also just amazing to see lupe vélez in a movie that isn't offensive to latin americans. i adore the 30s and 40s so really, equally exciting for those years. cant wait!!

    Strong content, great job. I do wish your mic was louder and sound effects were a bit quieter, but eh - this is educational and entertaining. I'm subscribing! At the end you ask, "What's your favorite of these" and I'm all, well, I've heard of two: "Coquette" and "Broadway Melody", perhaps because they're famous for the wrong reasons: Pickford's "lobbying" (which I'm also cool with; she was the Queen of the Screen for almost 2 decades) and "Melody" being the worst Best Picture: take away its age, and I'm not so sure. For that matter, never mind "Melody", what I've seen of "Coquette" was unendurable, or at least Pickford was unendurable. I wish she had rolled the dice around 1920 or so and cut the dang curls off. By the late 20s, it was too late. I suppose some sociologist needs to explain to us why America in the Teens and Twenties was so interested in an attractive woman - not Marilyn Monroe or even early Joan Crawford, but still quite attractive - performing roles for 12 year old girls. My opinion: 😐 I tell you one thing that I'd want to see: A Lubitsch movie starring Emil Jannings. Gawd, how did that go missing? I guess the film caught on fire? Tragic. Anyway, thanks for the info, sorry for writing a novel.

    • @whenthepicturesgotbigger

      Thank you for watching! I appreciate the kind words :) also I think it’s definitely a shame but I do have high hopes that it is maybe more of a short break than a full-blown death. I feel like the rise of AI is going to cripple the internet to the point that maybe 75-80% of what we see online is AI-generated, and I think that will send millions of people away from the internet and towards finite things they can truly trust. I suspect DVDs will come back into fashion and then perhaps some new format with a focus on affordability and aesthetic for mass consumption. Maybe that’s just a pipe dream, but I think physical media is too valuable for it to ever die.

    • @maxtubb8560
      @maxtubb8560 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@whenthepicturesgotbigger I hope that’s the case for physical media because I genuinely don’t not like streaming sure it’s convenient but compared to physical media it pretty lacking because unlike physical media where you own forever streaming companies can take it away from you due to license issues which just sucks.
      Streaming services also lack personality compared to physical media because with DVDs you had these cool animated menus that would always get me excited for movie but with streaming services you just start it and that’s it not interesting menu or cool UI just a bland corporate menu with a bunch of blocks.

    • @whenthepicturesgotbigger
      @whenthepicturesgotbigger  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've been getting really into retrospective screenings recently, and that to me is the peak way to watch older films. A lot of these experiences have been projected on film, which feels like a different movie entirely when compared to what you find on streaming. But I understand I am lucky to be near these screenings, as they aren't available everywhere.

    • @whenthepicturesgotbigger

    • @kali3665
      @kali3665 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@whenthepicturesgotbigger Yep. In Alternate Oscars, Danny Peary noted that Mayer anticipated that no one would notice that most of the awards at the second ceremony went to MGM because he had been so "unselfish" in the first year. Didn't work at all, which is why future awards would be decided by the entire Academy membership.
