@@JeansThoughts Long ago I was playing TH-cam in my friend's mobile, then I was watching the suggested video, then watch one of your videos in which you were showing the book of Mahabharata, then I wanted to ask a question, but I could not comment because That phone was of my friend, then I just wrote your channel name on the paper and went home but when I looked in my pant, the paper was not available, I was very disappointed but TH-cam kept searching again and again that a review of Mahabharata book by foreign girl and a Hindu book review by foreign girl search Kiya lekin tab bhi nahi Mila lekin wo say na God's house is late but not dark. Yesterday I was searching that top 10 best book review or top 10 novel in world then I found your second video which was related to Nobel and reached your channel.
I have only one question to you whether you have read Mahabharata.🙏🙏

You recommended The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet to me at just the right time in my life. I was struggling with infertility and the surgeries that go along with that. I had so much fear and sadness that I’d never get to be a mother and this book was such an escape and so comforting to read. It’s so special to me now. It’s years later and I have my daughter. I can’t wait to give her this book when she grows up and tell her how much it meant to me.

Gosh I'm obsessed with Going Postal. Just finished my second re-read last week! A small moment that comes to mind right now is Stanley reflecting on how he'd heard about pinheads who stopped loving pins one day, and the recount of the phenomenon of someone at a pinhead convention who throws his pin collection up in the air and runs out yelling 'Argh theyre just pins!' I could not stop laughing.

Years ago I knew I wanted to read "Kindred", but your recommendation always pushed up higher up on my TBR! I FINALLY read it this spring and LOVED it! Great recommendation, Jean! Thank you!!! Now I finally need to pick up "Daughter of the Forest" :)

I discovered Juliet Marillier through your videos and have since read the whole Sevenwaters series and several of her other books. Thank you so much for talking about her. I also read Radiance on your recommendation, but not its sequels. I'm looking forward to checking out Tessa Dare. 😊

    Read because of your recommendation:
Radiance: LOVE!!! Basically the book that got me into fantasy romance.
Ring Shout: AMAZING! I read it in one sitting, such a great story.
Daughter of the Forest: can't win 'em all. Too slow for me but lovely.

I read both The Vegetarian and Daphnis and Chloe from your recommendations! I cant say I enjoyed The Vegetarian by it was a 5 star read 😅 Daphnis and Chloe got me into reading ancient literature which I now love!

Ahaha enjoy is such a hard word to apply to such harrowing books but I’m glad it was a 5 star ;). And the fact D&C got you into ancient lit is amazing. I’m so beyond happy to hear that!

I read Binti because of you last year and it was also my first high scifi ever (but not the last)! I loved it. I also read Going Postal as my first discworld novel, partially because of you and I am completely obsessed with Moist now.... Have read independently The Vegetarian but I had no clue it was based in greco-roman mythology! And Kindred is one of my favourites of all times... Very intrigued by Daphnis and Chloe, and I just got A Night to Surrender from the library 😄

Daughter of the Forest and it's sequel about her daughter are two of my FAVOURITE reads od all time. I absolutely love them, after rereadjng them for years and years. Her writing in these two books is lyrical but simple and yeah, could not put it down either. 😊
Also, Grace Draven! Such interesting and beautiful characters.
These two authors are my comfort reads and are auto buy.

I didn't realize several of the books I've read in the past year or two were probably recommended by you - I'm pretty sure I've read Going Postal based on your recommendation - it was fantastic! I've read some of his earlier books, but then decided to just read whatever sounded good. I'm also thinking I read Binti based on your recommendation! I loved it. The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet - so good!
Radiance is on my TBR list!

I loved Binti, Ring Shout, and Daughter of the Forest! Would love to read more of Terry Pratchett and all of Becky Chambers and Octavia Butler. I remember Daphnis and Chloe fondly from university. I had written my thesis for my BA about those Hellenistic novels!

I have been watching your videos for years and some of my favourite books have come from your recommendations, specifically Going Postal and Daughter of the Forest (I quickly read the rest of the series as well). I've been meaning to pick up Daphnis and Chloe ever since I started watching your channel, many years ago now, but I still haven't. 😅 The crazy thing is, I'm Greek, I grew up in Greece, were taught Ancient Greece for 6 years at school, and I still had never heard of that book until I came across your videos!

I probably remember that video on Daphnis & Chloe from a decade ago. You seem so very comfortable in front of the camera, not that you weren’t then, but now…you are just having a chat with friends. Well that is what it seems like (then you were more a “video blogger”, not that you ant now of course).

I've read 3 of these. The Tessa Dare book, plus Going Postal and A Long Way to a Small Empty Planet.
Some of the books I would recommend are Something Missing by Matthew Dicks, The Vor Game by Lois McMaster Bujold, A Spot of Bother by Mark Haddon, and also A Psalm for the Wild Built by Becky Chambers.
ETA: I just checked the audio book of Binti out from my library. 😊

Love it when you speak about Djeli! Keep spreading their work - I also recommend them a lot for people who find alternative/steam punky history too white. The way he does Cairo and its mythology will always make me marvel at the genius of it all! Truly a pioneer of a subgenre that needs more people writing in it.

Hey Jean, there are a few classics that I'm interested in re-reading as I haven't visited them since high school, but it made me think of a question like I feel you would know the answer to. When we read Oedipus, Antigone, The Odyssey, Daphnis and Chloe (haven't read this one yet)... who had access to these texts? Like how mainstream were they for people to be able to read them and were they read for entertainment/fun?

    • @JeansThoughts
      @JeansThoughts  ปีที่แล้ว +1

People wouldn’t have been reading the plays - but they would have been watching them performed. Tragedy was performed as part of religious festivals which were widely attended and a big part of classical Athenian life. Daphnis and Chloe it’s harder to know and it’s much later in time. There’s a sense they’re ‘popular novels’ but that might be the same way Jane Austen was in her day, which still precludes them being widely read from less literate classes like enslaved people but certainly they weren’t exclusive to the elite. I think it’s impossible to identify a real numerical readership though without wider discussion of the books in other texts talking about culture of the time, which we don’t have.
