It started when they were born/when Maotelus became a hellion. Michael just didn't include himself when documenting the events in the Celestial Record... so everyone thought it was 200, when it was actually ~18 years ago.
It was on purpose though since he didn't want to give away the fact the Sheperds still existed until quite recently. He did create his village with the express purpose of it being hidden and free of both Rolance and Hyland's control.
Love the costumes you chose for them. ^_^ And yeah, Mikleo being a sacrifice... Heldalf tried to corrupt both Mikleo and Sorey by pushing onto them their attachments to family (Mikleo with Muse, and both Mikleo and Sorey with Gramps) but Sorey is just not as "clingy" and "spiteful" as other humans. He hates sacrifices... so he chooses to do everything on his own... but without being overdramatic about losing loved ones along the way if that's inevitable. I find Sorey more relatable that way. Lately, there's too much drama about revenge... misunderstandings... almost every anime, game, or manga builds conflict on the basis of over-hyped drama, revenge, twisted misunderstandings and convoluted personal tragedies that you know won't ever happen in real life. In reality, we actually move on more easily from any tragedy, facing our grief and overcoming it quietly- instead of acting like terrorists out to get even.
Shepherds aren't useless... Michael was able to do more than any other Shepherd has ever done in his time. You can go to Elixir Vitae Games' discussion of the Shepherds history in Berseria and Zestiria since it would be too long to explain here. As for Sorey, he was raised by the seraphim in Elysia, a world without cultural, racial or gender prejudice or discrimination... so he's human without any human "worldliness." Some gamers say he just wants to help and he's boring that way... but other Tales heroes have injustice issues and personal stakes which pushed them onto becoming a hero. Sorey chose to be involved because he saw his personal dream as part of everyone else's... even if others don't even care about him. Sorey's a truly forgiving and accepting person, balancing emotions and reason and treasuring the seraphim as "friends" rather than as "tools" to accomplish his goals.

If anything ill take him over Velvet which is just WRAAAAH MY LAPHI WRAAAAAH ARTORIOUS!!! I can understand Zestirias flaws as in alisha put to side, story, and grind to unlock its full gameplay but still beats berseria gameplay wise.
