Description: French illustrator and etcher, born in Strasbourg, dies in Paris. Famous for his printed illustrations of over 100 books, among which the Bible, fairy tales (by Perrault) the works of Dante (Divina Comedia), Lord Byron and Cervantes (Don Quixote).
Art connoisseurs consider Doré a romantic exponent of the 19th century whose work is devoid of artistic value but whose importance lies in his contribution to the development of book illustration.
For his bible illustrations Doré makes optimum use of contrast and chiaroscuro, often reaching quite mystical effects. His illustrated bible in folio format is a sensation from its moment of publication in 1865.
Around 1870 Doré stays in London for a considerable time where a publisher invites him to sketch a portrait of the city in 180 prints (London, a pilgrimage).
Doré does not manufacture all his engravings himself. In his studio his sketches are transferred onto plates. At one time he has a staff of 40 working to meet the demand.

It's important to remember that because of the way he worked Dore's images were a team effort, not the product of a single artist. Dore would do the initial drawing and design, but he had a team of incredibly talented engravers that designed the lines that defined tone and added details like patterns on costumes and leaves on trees. They were the best artist/craftsmen in the world. Dore considered the engraver to be an equal, and had them sign the opposite bottom corner from him. That's why Dore steel engravings bear two signatures.
Gustave Dore had a great imagination. to read the books and then imagine the characters and scenes. not many illustrators go or have been that far, 100 books of prints? respect for this man illustrator. ODE.
The amount of time and work going into his art is staggering. There is so much art that he created that is unknown and not taught or shown, Thanks for this collection of Dore's art.

They have a book about his works.its called The works of Gustove Dore.(I think)it was a long time ago but l remember seeing his works first and l said ",l' ve got to get 5hese books-first l got the divine Comedy,then Paradise Lost.l almost flipped.also the Bible

As a artist I can say this level of work and amount of it takes a lifetime to build up. What you see in this video is probably only half of the actual drawings he did, maybe more.

but I have to point some things out.
These illustrations are not etchings, but wood engravings, which is completely different printmaking technique. Line is not etched in metal plate, but engraved on a wood block.
Dore was mostly and ilustrator not a printmaker, engraver or publisher. Dore made an illustration on paper, engraver engraved it on a wood block (name of the engraver can be seen on the bottom right) and then printers printed it.

His grotesque caricatures and marginal illustrations were woodblock prints, but the full page illustrations were steel engravings, not wood engravings. I think Don Quixote was the only book that was all woodblocks.
