    Fun fact: Luke was supposed to die at the end of the show. The scene where he's blowing out the '2 years sober' candle was originally going to be hinted that it was happening in the red room by featuring the red room window on the wall behind and using red icing on the cake. But then the director decided it was too sad so he covered up the window with photo frames & made it a happy ending where he lives

    I always think the ending wasn't supposed to be happy. Like the mom's face in that last moment, she was not happy. She wanted all of her kids, and so the dad sacrificed himself so the rest of them could get out.

      If I'm not mistaken they considered a version where in the last scene in which Luke blows out the candles on his birthday cake, the room they are in has the same window as the red room, suggesting none of them escaped. But it was considered too depressing.

    Several fun facts and small details about this episode:
    -In the original ending of this season, Mike Flannagan and the writers intended for the family to die and remain trapped in the room; with the final shot of the episode being of the rectangular window on the back wall that was present in all the members’ ‘rooms’.
    -In the first episode, Steve states that ghosts can be thoughts, memories, fear, pain, and guilt. The nightmares the Red Room trapped them all in are variations of their guilt, insecurities, and pain.
    -Within every nightmare, there are small and subtle splashes of red present within the scenes, indicative of the Red Room’s influence and manipulation over each kid. Steve is wearing a red cardigan during the final convo with his fake pregnant wife, Shirley is wearing a red blouse at the bar and at her wake, and Trish is wearing red lingerie as she seduces Theo into submission.
    -On the topic of the color red, Olivia is wearing a completely red nightgown, sadly symbolizing her spirit having completely succumbed to the Red Room and house as a whole.
    -In Luke’s nightmare, little Nell says two words, “go” and “don’t”. Both are words Nell’s spirit has told Luke before. Nell said “Go” the night she died and Luke woke up at rehab and saw her spirit. She said “Don’t” during the final rites as Luke squatted over her casket. Time falls around like confetti, so I interpret these words as being warnings ahead of time, so he doesn’t go to the house and to leave the Red Room.
    -Trish’s story about a man enclosing himself behind a wall is in reference to William Hill, Poppy’s equally crazy husband and the body the dad found in Ep. 8. But the final lines of that story where William ‘woke up tall’, connects the Tall Man with the cane and bowler hat to being William’s warped spirit form. (His skeleton also had a cane and the photo Ms. Dudley showed Steve shows him with a bowler hat).
    -The shot of Luke’s 2 year anniversary has 7 people! His safety number and a complete/whole family 😢😭

    I feel like the ending is kind of perfect and a realistic depiction of grief. The Dudley's faced what mama Crain describes as, "the worst thing that could possibly happen to a person" TWICE. They lost two children, and were unable to move forward for fear of never seeing them again. The Crain children are able to live and have happy futures, free from the confines of Hill House. It shows that some people are able to move past the grieving stages, while others are swallowed whole by it.

    I mean, technically speaking the only bad ghost was Poppi. The others were around but didn't engage. If you pay a lot of attention you can tell how many ghost wonder around in the episodes. The ghost never left the house or haunted the kids, the kids had PTSD from their experiences in the house.

  • @victoriagrant9049
    @victoriagrant9049 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    This is such an old video but I can't help myself:
    1: Dying didn't make Poppy crazy. She was mentally ill when she was alive. Then she lost two children, at least one of whom was severely ill and a paraplegic. I think she committed suicide. So her whole angle as a ghost is madness and manipulation because that is how she lived.
    2: The house can't be burned down. Remember that the father said that if anyone tried to harm the house it would defend itself. Luke tried to burn it down and it literally just said, "no".
    3: The family as a whole did move on. Steven has repaired his marriage and has a kid on the way, Shirley is ready to take responsibility for her infidelity, Theo is ready for an actual relationship and is ready to embrace what she is by removing her gloves and Luke is 2 years sober. The reason the father wanted them to keep the house was because trying to destroy it could get them killed and eaten by the house. If they keep the house, they can keep guard over it and make sure no one else falls victim.
    4: It is easy to say, just leave the house. But at least in this case, the way they were flipping houses meant, logistically, leaving would be too difficult. They couldn't afford it. They buy a house and repair it with their own money, then sell it at a much higher price, recoup their loses and make a profit. Then buy a potentially nicer house, flip that for an even bigger profit. They probably only kept enough funds for daily expenses while everything else went to fixing the house. The problem was, hill house was supposed to be bought fairly cheaply but sold for such a high price that they could essentially retire. But they kept finding unforeseen problems that were eating away at their funds. If they were to leave, it would mean losing all that money and having no way continue their job. I think the dad at some point says that they poured everything they had into the house. To just suddenly be job and penniless is not an option when you have 5 children to care for. Someone as sensitive as the mom has probably seen ghosts before, but really underestimated how malevolent Hill House ghosts were. And the dad is a complete pragmatist. A fix it type of man. He is so sure of himself and always had an answer until he faced with the unknown and becomes a man who is so awkward with his kids. So unsure.
    5: Notice everytime someone mentions their "room" the other people are like, "huh?" When Nell tells Mrs. Dudley about the playroom, when the mom says she will be in her reading room. The house is purely manipulation. It changes your perception of time and place. The red room was locked because the house didn't want them to catch on.
    6: People have died in Hill House but the reason the house is so malevolent in the show is because it is stronger. The Cranes apart from the dad are all in some way psychic. They have the "shining" and the house is feeding from them and gaining A LOT of energy. Enough energy to wake dormant ghosts and allow those ghosts to affect the tangible world.

    I'm so glad that y'all uploaded your reaction! Your frustration and anger are completely understandable. This may or may not land with y'all, but my takeaway was this:
    I think Olivia was apt in her idea of houses being like bodies. Likewise, Nell was apt in her assessment of the Red Room being like a stomach-- digesting its hosts until all that remained were their deepest traumas and/or fears.
    Hill House (the actual house, not the show! lol) is written as though it's a living character-- sentient and breathing-- with wants and needs and motivations. And any well-written character carries around their own set of scars and traumas. We all do.
    I think the house is the main antagonist, and I think it's a well-written one; it's not inherently evil for evil's sake. It's ill. It carries trauma. And it is coping with that trauma in the only way it "knows" how: Consuming.
    I don't think burning the house down would have worked; Luke's attempt was proof of that. And I also think that burning it down would kind of undermine the idea of navigating trauma. None of us can destroy where our trauma lives-- in our families, our communities, or ourselves. But we can uproot it.
    If a house is like a body, and bodies can heal after incurring trauma, then maybe houses can heal, too.
    I think both of you have made excellent points throughout the entire series about healthy coping mechanisms and communication. I hope that, while the ending is still definitely not a happy one, this might offer a different perspective that allows for more satisfaction.
    (Sorry for the essay pls don't hate meeee. Ladyknightthebrave explains a lot of the things you both take issue with in her fan-hecking-tastic video essay about THoHH called "Stretching Genre".)

    • @PinkPopcast
      @PinkPopcast  3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      I actually really like your assessment. I guess my issue is that the ending didn’t really show a healthy way of coping with said trauma. It just kind of did a 180 and said, “Maybe it’s not all so bad.” But the truth is, Nell was murdered - by her mom/poppy’s toxic “love.” She didn’t need to embrace them in the end, she needed to be free to heal. Steven, for all his shit-headery, was essentially right: their mom had a thought processes that was unhealthy and should not have gone untreated.
      My issue with the ending was like watching someone embrace their toxic lover after ten episodes of abuse.

    • @delaneybeckman5248
      @delaneybeckman5248 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@PinkPopcast Apologies for the delayed response! I wanted to really engage with your take and give it the reply it deserved, and then life got hectic and my response fell to the wayside.
      You make some really great points; I can absolutely see your perspective on the three of them hugging at the end. I had always found Olivia's facial expression particularly haunting, but I hadn't consciously considered that dynamic of the "abusive lover"-- mostly because I had thought of Olivia as more of a spirit who had been corroded and warped by the House's influence than I had considered her toxicity. But you're right: Her own incurred damage doesn't negate the pain she has perpetuated.
      This is something that I've really appreciated about y'all's reaction to the show. It's clear how much y'all care about mental health and healing after trauma. So even when your take is different from mine or my partner's we try to engage with our resistance rather than dismiss your opinions outright; your reactions spark even more discussions about our own traumas and perspectives and how we can work towards healing and adopting healthier coping skills.
      All that to basically just say that you're both really funny and entertaining, all while being thought-provoking and I really like it. my read was the house representing a span of time shared by a group of people, there was trauma but also moments of happiness. That period of their lives could literally consume them, as it did with Liv, others could have complex relationships with that time - like the Dudley's, who don't want to completely block it out, but want to focus on the things that happened in those times that made them happy. In the end, you can't destroy that period of time and those experiences, which is why the house wouldn't burn.

    I think that the ending, and the show overall, is more satisfying if read more symbolically than literally. Mike flanagan doesn't really get hung up on the literals of his ghost stories. they're more expressions of trauma and hurt and guilt. I really like that it sort of hangs in the in between place of both literal and metaphorical. I always thought that ghosts are not "real" necessarily, but they are true. if that makes any sense.

    It’s infuriating how many people don’t get that the house is an entire allegory for grief! The house won’t let you burn it down because it’s actually not just a house. So many people only look at the surface and in a linear timeline. The amount of things you and so many missed in this that need to be mentioned is astounding.
    It’s so important because it’s such a real and raw representation of how grief feels and how mementoes haunt you always. I understand the silliness to break tension but it’s sad how it’s glossed over so many things within the story and characters beyond what you’re seeing.

    up until the NIGHT BEFORE they were supposed to shoot the final scene, Hill House had a different ending where the Crains never left the red room and Mike Flanagan felt so guilty about it cause he just believed that after all the shit he put the family through, they DESERVED a happy ending.
    So if you look behind Luke when he's blowing out the '2' candle at the painting in the background, that was where the red room window was gonna be and they had to change set last minute.

    When I think about the way that Bly Manor worked, once the ghost loses the ones they love and their memories, they become just wandering... beings(?), with no purpose. I wonder if Hill House works similarly? Like, if instead of losing their face, they lose their minds? Just doing the same things again and again, trapped in memories?
    Benji mentioning that the mom might become like Poppy in the future is a good point to consider. I know that Poppy was psychotic before she died and her death just exacerbated it but, you can see that the mom was losing her grip a bit when she talked to the Dad in the end. There is a chance that the house's negative influence can distort the ghosts mind in death, just as it did in life.
    Anyways!!!!!! Sorry for the essay lol!!! Love you guys!!!

    I didn’t see it as them thinking that the house was something to protect or was happy place I saw it more as, since they can’t get rid of it you can keep no one from trying to buy it by keeping it in the family so that no one else has to go through what they did now that the truth of it is out and everyone believes what is in front of them and it’s not as if they could burn it Luke tried especially when it’s clear that the ghosts won’t let them they could probably try tearing the house down and the ghost make the equipment malfunction in a way that could hurt the people who try

    5:00 I just need to say, this house is actually absurdly powerful: it's not only manipulating memories that only the individual would know about, but it's creating hallucinations that physically harm them, creating literal STRUCTURES (according to that whole tree house situation, at least), entrapping, consuming AND re-employing spirits, creating time dilation/distortions by pulling future victims into the past, just..... This house, has a wider range of powers than literal superheros, and frankly even the most powerful demonic presenses/lore I've ever dang ol seen.
    I've only seen structure creation and time dilation like this in very specific Japanese legends of deep, deep, spirited away level curses, the spiriting away aspect being the main theme this particular 'entity' isn't seeming to pull, to the living victims at least.
    It's real cool, mind you, but it kinda puts literal Satan to shame. Lol... In a world full of magic, this house would be a little more reasonable of a threat. In our tightly logical world however, it's pulling from so many powers it almost feels unreasonable to expect anyone to survive this place. In short, it's broken af, pls nerf (but don't actually, gimme moar). Lol

    what you’re saying about “moving on to the afterlife”, while true, it also has to be said: they are in their afterlife. they simply chose theirs, yk. i’m not saying it’s smart or anything but from nellie to the dad to the dursleys, they more or less understood what they were in for. especially the dursleys. like mr d has been /born/ in this house, he was always going to die there as well (i think that’s one of the reasons he was “the safest” in a way. the house simply made sure that all of his family was there as well, whether as an insensitive (?) to make sure he was going to end there or, as he perceives it i think (many precious things) to have all that he needs and wants with him).
    nellie needed to know whether she was right or not, after all, her entire life she was gaslit about what happened in this house, the ghosts she saw and let us not forget: she and luke saw their mother /kill/ someone who everyone insisted didn’t exist in the first place. her going to the house meant that to a certain degree she knew she was going to die there. though ironically once she realized that her trauma is real, and she could have lived. i still think that if nellie wasn’t there all of the other kids would have died in the house. nellie was the only one of the kids who was regularly seeing ghosts, who shared that the bent neck lady is real (to her). everyone else’s ghosts are in the past. from steve and shirl not even realizing they had engaged or seen them, to luke’s experiences being from when he was a kid. theo has a special position as the literal middle ground between supernatural and our world. she’s also right in the middle of her family, having protected the younger ones and kept closest with the older ones. she knew that at the very least the twins trauma wasn’t “fake”. whether ghosts existed or not, the twins where traumatized. as they all were. she understood that steve and shirl are in denial and stubborn. i think that’s why it was easy for her to take steve’s money as well. she understood he was going to do this to their family either way, it’s not like he knew what he was talking about, so.
    but back to my original point of them choosing their afterlife. this house is filled with so many people, good and bad, sane and ill, just like any other idea of afterlife. this house has love and families like any other afterlife has as well. they simply accepted this house the same way we have to accept death regardless. it’s simply a defined location other than an abstract something something afterlife.

  • @lost_in_the_forrest
    @lost_in_the_forrest 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think the point is that they couldn’t burn the house down because in many ways the house was the living embodiment of their trauma while also being the only place where the people who were ultimately consumed by the trauma could still exist. As someone who doesn’t believe in an afterlife I can appreciate not burning it out of fear of losing those who have been lost because to me there isn’t anything after, they’re just gone, so even though it’s very unhealthy I can appreciate why the characters kept the house around for that reason alone because seeing them in this cursed place was still better than them being gone.
    For me the ending thus ends up making a lot of sense, because those who ended up leading lives consumed by trauma ended up forever stuck, while those who were able to move forward from it got to live their lives undefined by their loss and grief and trauma, while the house still remained.

    Yeah, totally should have burned the house. It gave me the end of The Ring vibes, where it's a solution, but is it a good one? Or just perpetuating the problem?
    But I did like the metaphor that sometimes a parents' love can cause trauma. That not all trauma is made maliciously or nefariously. And that the only way to save them from it is love and understanding. Nell saves them each from their own delusions or coping mechanisms. Each "dream" they were stuck in was about how their coping mechanisms killed them or destroyed their life. Nell's death gave her the ability to see how the house works, and understand that it can be stopped or that her siblings can be saved.

    • @PinkPopcast
      @PinkPopcast  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a really good perspective. Hate that they needed Nell to die to see that, but it is always good to confront characters (and the audience) with healthy ways to overcome trauma!

    • @megwritesamhjohnson
      @megwritesamhjohnson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PinkPopcast If you want to keep looking at it metaphorically, it's because Nell was acceptance. She's the only one who's gone through all steps of grief. Almost all the time, only someone who has been through that situation can help someone going through it out and pull them out of their own mire of coping that isn't helping them.
      Entire theses could be written on the subject, which is why I liked Hill House. It's really deep on such a heavy topic that everyone experiences without making anyone of them coping the villain. The villain is the house. The trauma. It's done in a really artistic way that is beautiful with the horror of the story.

    I think the problem with the ending is that it is one of those situations where they either for go the metaphor or the logic, which in this case don't necessarily correlate. The metaphor is about grief and so they can't burn the house down because it represents their grief, which can never be destroyed, and which some people can move on from while others can't. But yeah, when you put the metaphor aside and look at it as just the situation by itself and what actually happened to these characters then it's extremely fucked up. So whether you like the ending or not I think really comes down to whether you are more interested in the metaphor or in the literal. If you like the former, you'll like the ending. If you like the latter, you'll hate the ending. Neither opinion is necessarily wrong.

    • @PinkPopcast
      @PinkPopcast  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That was EXACTLY my problem! They spent an entire show using the house as a metaphor for trauma, then at the LAST SECOND decided to switch to the literal house and say it’s okay that the trauma happened. In real life, those people all have horrible coping mechanisms that doesn’t just go away and need to be treated or dealt with professionally by people that can help you distance yourself from toxic triggers and learn to heal. The house sucked, the mom traumatized her children, causing two of them more earthly damage then she could ever repair. The ending wasn’t sweet, it was like they were gaslit into forgiving an abusive lover, lol
