Us book fans got lucky because they provided a map of the different countries and a list of the different type of Grisha at the beginning of the books. I wish they could have explained/showed the setting and types of Grisha better in the show.

    • @themurrrr

…plus the different coloring assigned to each kind of Grisha. Something that visually helps a lot, but, imo, is poorly explained in the series at the start.

The ONLY thing they did wrong in this show is not to explain the world better in the first two episodes. So let's summarize.
Grisha (born with powers): they do "small science" (aka, magic). We have inferni (fire), squallers (wind), tidemakers (water), alchemy (deal with chemicals), durast (do general inventions), heartrenders (powers over the human body for battle) and healers. Several grisha work on Ravka's second army.
Then we have what was once Ravka, that now is divided by the Fold and becomes West and East Ravka (still 1 single country). Shu Han is on the south of Ravka, Fjerda is in the north. Ravka is at war with both countries.
Grisha have been hunted for ages, and the only real safe place for them right now is Ravka.
Finally, Ketterdam is across the sea from Ravka, and it's a city rulled by profit.
Summarizing, that's it. You'll get the rest until episode 3.
Love you guys, I was smilling the entire video 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

@@Angelina3Moses Genya is the only taylor we get to know (the same way as Sun Summoner and Shadow Summoner), and they would get to understand it by seeing the show. But, just to explain, taylors are Corporalki, just the same as healers and heartrenders. Their powers are essentialy the same, but they have an aptittude to use it in different ways. Taylors can craft the flesh, skin and body tissues to change a person's appearance 😉

I agree completely - I haven't read the books but I felt thrown from one thing to the next without a full understanding to The Who's and whats. The world seems amazing and I plan to read the books but I felt like they could have been more thorough or slow with the way they tied things together.

It's true that the plotline with Alina etc. is based mostly on Russian culture, but the Six of Crows plotline actually derives a lot from the Netherlands (if I remember correctly, mainly from during the Dutch golden age). Some of examples of this are Ketterdam, which is mostly inspired by Amsterdam, but also langauge (they call Heleen "tante", which is Dutch for aunt etc.) and names (there's numerous characters with Dutch names like "Joost").

I found the first episode surprisingly easy to follow. Of course, there were some things I didn't catch but overall, I feel like they established the world and the main characters pretty well. I absolutely love the scene that introduces Kaz Brekker and his crew! First, we see Jesper and learn that he is a skilled gun figter. Next, we see Kaz and immediately know that he is above Jesper in the hierarchy. Then we learn that Kaz has stolen the painting, so he is a very skilled thief. We get introduced to Inej in a way that shows us that she's a spy and that she is in some way indebted / tied to Kaz. And then later we see that Pekka Rollings is above Kaz. So they informed us of all the important characters, their main skills / roles and their position in the hierarchy in the first episode. I could watch it a million times :)

    • @imaginareality
      @imaginareality 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I think what they established less well is the role of the Grisha. But even there, they do give us scenes that show that Grisha are treated better and are not very popular with people in the First Army (the fight scene with Mal; the tent where Mal steals the food; Mal and Alina's comment when they see a Grisha training with fire). But I missed a lot of that ony my first watch because it's thrown in with soooo much other stuff. It becomes more clear in later episodes, though.

Incase u need help, here are the grisha types that I can remember:
Corporalki- wearing the red keftas, and consisting of heartrenders, healers and tailers. They focus on the human body.
Etherealki- wearing the blue keftas, they control the elements and are considered summoners.
Materialki- wearing the purple keftas, they control different earth related materials.
These are the three types. Oh and the embroidery on the keftas are the defining point in each of the categories. Hoped this helped :)
If I missed any just let me know

The first part of the show hasn't reached the point yet, where tailors weare red too
And the detailed list of grisha colors is (first color is the main color of the kefta, second color is the embrodery):
Darkling: black-black (can summon and control shadows)
Sun Summoner: blue-gold/black-gold (can summon and control sunlight)
Heartrender: crimson-black (manipulate the body of another person to cause harm, kile stopping the heart, breaking bones)
Healer: crimson-white (manipulate the body of another person to heal injuries)
Squallers: blue-silver/white (can summon and control wind/storms and sometimes lighning, which is very rare and dangerous)
Tidemakers: blue-light (can summon and control water)
Inferni: blue-red (can summon and control fire)
Durast: purple-grey (can manipulate anythin solid on a molecular level, like stone, glas, wood ...
Alkemi: purple-red (in the show its kind of pinkish) (espercialists in chemicals, potions and blasting powders)
Tailor: white-gold, later crimson-blue (can alter a persons apperance)
I hope this makes it a bit clearer

  • @nicolettemaloy
    @nicolettemaloy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Okay here’s some explanation from a huge fan of the books no spoilers obviously! Ravka (where Alina and Mal are) is in fact Russian inspired! Alina is part Ravkan and Shu (Shu Han is Asian inspired I’m not sure which Asian country exactly though). Ravka is spilt in half by the fold (east and west Ravka). The south (Shu Han) guard their mountains and don’t let people pass. The north (Fjerda) wants to kill grisha (the magic people) so the only way to get supplies is to go through the fold.
Kaz, Inej, and Jesper are from Ketterdam on the island of Kerch which is inspired by Amsterdam. If you want to know the exact location of everything there are plenty of maps online that show exactly where everything is in relation to each other.
Now for the grisha! There’s orders of the grisha.
    - Corporalki, or the Order of the Living and the Dead. Within this order you have healers (they can heal people), heartrenders (They can use their power to damage a person's internal organs. Their ability ranges from slowing a person's pulse to snatching the air from their lungs. The target must be in their line of sight.), and the rare tailors (ability to change a person's appearance.) they wear the red keftas (coats)
    - Etherealki, or the Order of Summoners. Within this order you have Inferni (manipulate fire), Tidemaker (manipulate water), Squallers (manipulate air). Then you have the two rare types of summoners the shadow and sun summoner. They wear the blue keftas (coats) except for the general he wears a black one
    - Materialki, or the Order of Fabrikators. Within this order you have Durasts (manipulate glass, steel, wood, plants, stone, or anything solid on a molecular level.) and Alkemi (They specialize in chemicals like blasting powders and poisons.) they wear purple keftas (coats)
And the show is actually technically combining two book series by Leigh Bardugo but they take place in the same universe (it’s called the grishaverse) you have the shadow and bone trilogy (Alina and Mal). And the characters from the six of crows duology (Kaz, Inej, Jesper and later you’re introduced to two more). But the the of SoC takes place two years after the end of the shadow and bone trilogy so everything for the crows in the show is all prequel for them. But the crows are probably fan favorites most people prefer six of crows over shadow and bone which makes sense it’s better written and the characters are more fun in my opinion but that’s probably because it’s Leigh Bardugo’s 2nd series so she has a better idea of her writing style :) (Kaz is my favorite character he’s the one with the cane lol)

I knew nothing of this going in and I was able to follow along well and fully understand the world building it was doing I’m surprised to see so many comments of people who were confused by it the first episode or even the series

I felt like having headphones would have been nicer to watch this series. Because on tv I needed subtitles just to understand some of the quiet talking.

If you don't read Six of Crows you don't really get whats going on with Kaz and his Crows, so you really, really, really have to read the books.

New subscriber here but omg this reaction just made my whole night! Your reactions are so funny and so on point so don’t worry about being confused most of the time! :) the show will eventually explain everything

  • @taylormademadness
    @taylormademadness 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You should read the books. As a fan the show was very well done but it actually combined the original series and the spin-off. The six of crows are a separate series that happen about 10 years after the shadow and bones storyline. I was originally worried about making it all one storyline but I think they did a good job

Based on the fact that Ravka is supposed to be like the sovjet union (russia for the most part), i'm thinking the Shu Han (where Alina is partly from) could be from mongolia, hence why she looks different than the others, just like Mal.

I started watching the first episode before reading the books. I was SO HELLA confused, I quit the episode mid way through, went and read the first Shadow and Bone book and then came back to finish the episode. Then I read the other two Shadow and Bone books and the first Six of Crows one before finishing watching the show. It honestly helped so much. They did the relationship development between characters so dirty in the adaptation. Honestly, everything was so rushed it was hard to grow attached and root for anyone.
That first episode needed WAY more exposition for people to actually understand how the heck this world is set up and what's going on. The foundation building sucked. And I wish Netflix would have done a couple more episodes to let the story breathe a little instead of chaotically jumping from one thing to another.

I never read the books either, didn’t hear about shadow and bone until Netflix. And eve tho I’ve watched the whole season, I still don’t remember their names 🤣

omgggggg can't wait for you guys to watch this series, i LOVED IT!!!!!
also after Shadow and Bone you guys should react to Cruel Summer on Hulu, it's a totally addictive teen thriller with a ton of plot twists, amazing acting, and a character actually going to therapy after a traumatic event (since every dark show has characters that probably should be)

I love that you started this series !!! Loved it, and absolutely love your commentary and your jokes! ahaha
And love this show, especially since I lived in Russia, super fun to see a fantasy world inspired by it (though I must say, I think you said soviet Russia, and it's more inspired by the tsarist era, so like, more 19th century - beginning of 20th, you'll see more of it as the story unfolds!)
Also, I find it a fun way to rewatch the show without actually rewatching it (even though I will), and it's fun to see what you guys notice vs what I didn't, or didn't really react to.
Can't wait to follow this series with you !
