Yes, Joseph Schmidt does a brilliant job on La donna, it's a pity that at just 4 feet 10 inches tall he couldn't have a career in opera and so sad that he died at only 38 years of age. I've always loved Tino Rossi's voice and he put such sincere emotion into his singing. He didn't record much opera but I'll keep popping him in now and then. Well so tragic an ending at age 38, just into his prime. Schmidt's height as far as a big opera career and of course being Jewish in Germany in the late 1930's did hurt him, had he lived longer we would have had a lot more no doubt, but as you well say, he was a brilliant artist, either live or on recordings as a Lyric tenor, and when he did sing in the opera house or concert hall (as here in New York) he was as perfect as on his studio records, so at least we have his recordings and several films, some recordings where destroyed, but so many survive. Our time is very fast-living; maybe a lot of people just look for something short to distract themselves for a few minutes. Lately I read the comment of another channel owner who checks on the time each of his videos is played, and he found out that often people listen to only part of a video before jumping to the next. I must confess that I seem to contribute to these short playing times because quite often I start a video only to put it on a playlist and save it for later. As I did with your latest. I wanted to play this morning, but yesterday evening my iPad started giving me trouble. Communication is still working fine, but when I try to play a video it just stops after a few seconds as if there were no connection to the internet. Only there is. I can write comments. I can answer you. But - no music. Another channel‘s host suggested that it might be a problem with TH-cam because he, too, is having some kind of trouble. So let‘s hope for the best, because I so look forward to your latest! One of my favourite arias times nine! Terrific! I‘ll go on a short trip now and will try my luck when I get back. I didn't know Joseph Schmidt before and Tino Rossi neither (at least not consciously). You perhaps know... I'm a Jussi Fan girl but... the timbre of Tino Rossis clear voice and the feeling and emotion in his singing knocked me away. So thank you from my heart and a blessed and wonderful advent season.

Some of the opera fanatics look down on him because he wasn't an opera singer but I love the sound of his voice and, as you say, the wonderful emotion in his singing. And poor Joseph Schmidt, at only 4ft 10in tall, too short to have a career in opera but what a voice. Then, as you probably know he died aged just 38 in 1942 (the year in which I was born). Have a lovely Christmas and a happy and healthy (and musical) New Year.
In 1962 I saw Schipa in a concert recital, I was living in California, Schipa sang a farewell concert in California (and also in New York) He was in his early 70's but still managed some excellent singing with his Lyric voice and flawless technique , that and the right roles enabled him to last so long in excellent voice, I was only 22 years old at the time, but still remember that he sang with no effort and flawlessly!.
That's a good memory to have. The recoding that first attracted me to his voice was Le Violette, I wonder if he sang it at the concert. Looking at the photo at 10:44 he seems to have been quite small in height.
I knew his brother Carlo Schipa very well when I worked in classical radio, in Los Angeles and I was once a guest at his home, after seeing Schipa in person Etc. and seeing some pictures his brother had at home , I'd guess he was five feet four.
I don't remember all he sang, but he probably did sing it, he sang more songs then aria's and that song was a popular one for him. The voice was older of course but still steady, then in his early 70's. RIP. @@michaelmcgrailengland

Another good one Michael. I cried listening to Tino. My husband used to sing the berceuse, not in french but the english version Angels Guard Thee. He learned it in his early 20's as part of his voice training and sang it beautifully. I still have all his sheet music from his early days and my only regret is that he never made any recordings😢

I have this original recording, the 1955 RCA original Forza ( RCA# LM 1916,) a Mono LP recording they made of just "the Hilites" with Tenor Peerce, Baritone Warren, soprano Milanov and Bass Moscona , the Cond. was Jonel Perlea, interesting how this, your recording of the duet, has a more opened up sound compared to my original Mono RCA LP.
I'll bet you're surrounded by books and records. Was it originally a studio recording of the full opera or did they only record the highlights? As well as Hermann Jadlowker, Tiita Ruffo is on my next video and I just noticed that they were both 1877 to 1953. I have a TH-cam friend in Ireland who, sadly, is without sight but his hearing is razor sharp. He loves the sound on my videos and one of the things he mentioned was, rather like you, "space" as he called it. One of the things I do is to divide the mono track into two tracks, left and right, and then give more weight to mid-low frequencies on the left and mid-high frequencies on the right that just spreads the sound a little so that it doesn't all come evenly from the centre. By the way I sometimes moan about modern technology, as you probably do but it it has some great benefits. Joseph has some software on his computer that he calls "speech" and when I send him a typed message his computer translates it to speech and reads it to him and vice versa, when he sends me a message he speaks into the computer microphone and it converts it to text. He has the same thing on his phone. So it's not all bad!!

Amazing, yes, but I have little sense of the technical or patience for it but as for the Hilites of Forza on RCA Peerce never did record the complete role of course, he sang it a few times in the 1960's, at the Met about 6 or 7 times and in Holland also in the 1960's a couple of times only, it was not a great role for him, but Peerce was basically a Lyric tenor, though he had lots of resonance in the house and a good mid size voice. It was a really great role for Tucker, MDM and Corelli of course. Both GDS and Bergonzi sang it in our times also. BTW I use in my 1918 "Victor Victrola" occasionally with "Swiss Steel Phonograph needles" (Planstiehl) A small Package contains 12 needles, and they (when I bought them about 30 years ago) where very cheap, in USA money, about Two Dollars at most!) . Since you can play a record at least 10 times over with them, I still have quite a few left in the two packages I bought, I still have an original tin box of new "Victor" (Brand needles") also steel from 1915 my grandfather used at the time in his Victrola!.
