Well I will say this was always disappointed with y'alls results on the show for exploding rocks on mythbusters....I say that bc in my boy scout troop we all knew of exploding rocks and called them 'happy rocks' because we would sit around the campfire and throw sedimentary rocks and some gravel types into the fire and wait for them to explode with a pop and sending hot rock shrapnel flying.....made a game out of it that boys would come up with. Just about everyone of us have the scars to prove it and one reason I make darn sure now when camping not to build a fire on those rocks.

That's pretty fascinating. The MythBusters Roadshow COULD have fixed their machines to be extremely reliable, but didn't because fixing the machines live was entertaining and fun. They WERE reliable enough not to break beyond what could be repaired on stage, and the breakages weren't intentional, but the machines were intentionally left just unreliable enough to often break in interesting but reparable ways. I would say the opposite at least in the context of film and TV production. On most sets you pretty much expect to go over time (especially if it is a commercial) so being able to accurately gauge the amount of time to finish a project while filming and not go into overtime shows a deep knowledge of your skills and all the typical slowdowns you'll hit setting up shots to catch parts of the build process.

They had the innate skill to prep things and script them out but set them up to work themselves out naturally, you felt like you were part of the crew and you could feel the actual chemistry between the 3 gents. You felt like you were part of the adventure they were going on, even though you have a guided plan of how they'll end up in the end.

As I physics teacher (wonderful job) for 15 years, I embraced what you describe. Often when a science (or math) teacher engages in "problem solving" with the class is is really just rehearsed practice for the teacher guiding the students through to a solution. But when you engage (or engage your students-even better) in AUTHENTIC problem solving (basically trying to trouble-shoot an experiment or demonstration) real learning takes place. Early on in my career I embraced the "constructivist" philosophy of learning; it fit my own learning style so it made sense to try to develop this in my students. And what better way than to bring this kind of problem solving to the classroom. Thank you for bringing that to top of mind! Have a safe New Year.

"It is really engaging to witness an adventure being partaken by people fit for adventure."
    -Adam Savage
A GREAT quote and a really profound thought; it clarifies our intuitive sense of how to think about stories of adventure.
Consider a story of survival featuring a bus full of school children that's broken down in the wilderness during a blizzard. Now consider how the story changes if those kids are high-school aged vs. kindergarten aged.
In the first instance you could tell a tale of team work, emergent personalities and skills, the development of self confidence, etc... In the second, without magic, you'd have a tale of search and rescue or tragedy...
@Adam Savage’s Tested: Thanks for your clear articulation this seemingly fundamental concept that I'd never really never considered before!

That’s wonderful. That’s knowing how long you have and what skills you have enough to know when something is going to get done.
Used to work for a museum and exhibit design always needed that.
To know exactly when things needed to get and be done so the exhibit open on the right day. That means importing parts of the exhibit, collaboration with other places, building exhibits, and keeping them maintained

can definitely resonate with this one. have done a bit of production maintenance, and fixing stuff on my truck that goes catastrophically wrong, and other fixing scenarios where Life threw a problem at me in a way i didn't expect and im just starting from "go" and what i find is if my supervisor or someone asks me at the beginning, how long till its working, my answer is not quite as accurate as it is about half an hour into sticking my hands in the machine and getting greasy and pulling broken stuff out. and that answer right then is usually bang on the money for how long its gonna take to a running condition. it does come in handy, it does make supervisors and such really happy when it is finally finished and you delivered right when ya said ya would. and i am finding the more i exercise that skill, the closer i get with my before repair time estimates. ( i still leave myself a good amount of buffer in my time estimate) its definitely saved my bacon a few times as far as prioritizing resources and energy and getting myself out of binds. thinking over "can i get this part of my truck to drop free before the auto parts store closes tonight, so i get the core charge, or do i need to go now?" and such it helps.
