Isn't stealing a form of respect... When was the last time that Westerners took Chinese ideas and ran with them? Fermented foods to avoid obesity, Toilet Bidet attachments to save on toilet paper, the 2 child policy to prevent high-school dropouts from outbreeding college graduates, or a political system based on merit rather than selling to the lowest common denominator. The more I learn about China the more I wish there was a culture that mixed the good parts of the West with the good parts of China.

My wife’s family is Vietnamese, but I can relate. We visited Europe with part of her family. The younger folks were open-minded about trying local food while the elder generations refused to partake. In one occasion, we were eating prawns in the Mediterranean coast of Spain while the elders just watched us eat and kept showing me photos of Vietnamese style prawns on their phone saying “food Vietnam good!”. My wife was very upset we had to find the closest thing to Vietnamese food exclusively for them. It was hilarious.

This is absolutely spot on. When the mum of my Chinese partner came to visit she was invited to Christmas lunch with my family. She decided to go to a temple to pray and mingle with other Chinese much like she did every day in the weeks prior. Not interested in anything other than continually demanding we totally rearrange our apartment to fit in with her superstitions and her religious beliefs (only for our own good of course). She continued to assume Christmas lunch was just a random get together that could happen on any other day. God it was an eye opener for what I was in for. And my partner totally agreed with her mum and told me thats how its going to be. Got rid of her quick smart after that...

London England They received entirely different kind of education from CCP especially about world politics. That is why CCP built a Great Firewall preventing Chinese in contact with the western media unless they know how to use VPN (less than 1% of the entire population). Even they contact with the westerners, their built-in "immune system" through "brainwash" since childhood still take a long time to lose effect. It is something like cult or ISIS.

In my opinion, China is a backward country in terms of a culture of good manners, and many problems regarding respect for other people (of course I'm not talking about everyone - everyone is different) socially backward (there are many places in China where having a toilet is a miracle) let add to this violation of human rights, imprisonment and conviction of innocent people who do not support the government (after which Killing them and selling them as organ to hospital) attacking and destroying free cultures / nations (Tibet) blocking people from the outside world and stupiding them (probably the Biggest Propaganda on World) in my opinion, there is only one Asian Country that deserves attention, and it does not have the above problems and also exists continuously, it is also much better and more technologically developed than China. It's utterly irresponsible that our govt has destroyed our friendly, easygoing, helpful, down to Earth Ausie culture & blown it out China's arse!
I've had to watch our home towns become exclusively for China, with shitloads of ugly advertising slopped on windows, doors & walls. It's just going to end up as a massive version of grotty little Dixon St (or Chinatown, Sydney) with animal carcasses in shopfronts, posed in hideous positions, that just look like a pile of food poisoning to me.
It's so unfortunate that todays tourists have missed out on the welcoming, fun atmosphere that Sydney once had. You could stroll around Sydney during the day & always find some neat markets or some point of interest. Now, it stinks, it's crowded & it has no personality, it makes people feel unwelcome & in the way. Our western society has been killed off.
Our city, today, is the result of ignorant left wingnut politics. Strange how Newtown/Sydney has remained mostly white & westernized?

While she has been 'westernized' up to a certain extend from years of living in Hong Kong, I still find much 'incompatibility' between us. Yep, Christmas just passed and for her, it was simply another day other than a day off from work for her. Aside from the Christmas sales plastered all over the malls and generic Christmas music being piped thru the speakers, nothing really shown any festivity or celebration of what we considered an important day! Granted I couldn't find turkey dinner anywhere during Thanksgiving because that was very much an American holiday but nothing else really matter for her except Chinese New Year!
My own mother, who lived in the US for over fifty years, still refused to assimilate remotely into its culture! Even after all these time living here, she refused to drink water from the faucet and insisted on boiling water first! She had ovens in every home we lived in and yet, she never cooked with them... and uses the dishwasher to store extra dishes and bowls!

"The door only swings one way." That applies to Japan somewhat, even though, they are much more welcoming. Christmas in Japan, perfect example. I purchased chicken and gift for the kid, following the way of xmas here and got shat on by the old lady for not sending New Year's cards to my employer. I'm bringing shame on the family, I guess. The longer I'm here, the more domestic I am expected to be. The less I know, the better I am treated. My culture, ethnicity, my celebrations, my country are not really a curiousity, I only get accolades for knowing the "Japanese way" (which is really Nihonjinron, the concept of Japanese uniquely, uniqueness), getting along with societal norms, following along and speaking the language well.
Mutual respect for newcomers?Nah, that's not a thought. If you don't like it, just go back to where you came from is the final answer. End of discussion.
As we all know, in immigrant countries, we try to understand that all people are not the same, not mass conformity, I feel. Its not perfect, far from it. Yet, we try to make amends for past wrongs, change or improve.
Maybe at the heart of this feeling of ethnic superiority is neo Confucianism and filial piety, especially in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam and the rest of Sinosphere. Thoughts?

The U.S. is a nation of immigrants, descendants of immigrants and descendants of forced labourers, and thus a plethora of races, ethnicities, cultures and religions. To the extent that we respect other cultures, we only do so because we *have* to. As Ross Perot once said, whether we like it or not, we're all stuck with each other, so we have to find ways to get along. Most other countries don't have this background and experience; that gives them the freedom to be as xenophobic as they wanna be (or not).

Anyway, during my stay in the US, I'm slowly changing, and every time I felt offended, I would stop and think why would I feel that way, is it because what I was taught by the CCP? Or because the accusation was wrong. Normally it's the first one.
It takes an effort to jump out of that little red box that is our "Chinese Way of Thinking"
China had a beautiful history and culture, yes, had. Mao destroyed with the Cultural Revolution. If you really think about it, today's China only has about 30 or so year of history and culture, cuz before that was full on communism. The culture only started to grow after the Open Up Policy in the 80s.
I would say from personal experience, the older generation was raised with just hatred towards Western cultures, and the new generation is raised under Xi's nationalism. I kinda grew up in between these two waves.
Well, fuck me dead, now that we actually have an emperor, and even thinking about going back there would give me anxiety and makes me depressed.

How are poor persons viewed in China? What if a person has a hard time finding a job, or has been falsely accused in China? For example, in certain small towns, or medium towns of USA, a large portion of the population may basically blacklist a person for being poor, or having accusations even if they are false accusations. Is it a similar situation of possibly being blacklisted in China if a person is poor, or has been falsely accused by one or more person? Technically, the issues that Winston talks about in China, seem to have variations of it in USA in various regions by certain ruling social-economic classes basically looking down on the poor, and/or try to cause worse troubles for that person for simply not fitting in.

You need to go to China yourself to get the insight. This channel is evil and bias in a big way. That's the way how this guy makes money on TH-cam. He talks about things western world wants to hear ONLY. There are other channels featuring foreigners living in China and what their day to day looks like as a normal person. Now matter how China gets where it is now. One solid fact is people got lifted out of poverty through out the past 30 years. A household of 3 income was 10 dollars a month in early 90s. When people were struggling for a living, no one cares about anything but their belly. Back then, China was under CCP leadership as well. But you don't see as much hatress as today. Westerns never cared about the human rights , chinese people manners, respectfullness inequality whatsoever back then. So why start bashing about it right now? Come on.

Then all of a sudden she just starts calling this one girl who is slightly overweight, a fat whale to her face. Mind you, this girl is the most polite person and has never said anything negative to the Chinese wife. We were all kind of shocked, and the husband had to apologize for her. But after a first moment being a bit upset, I realised it might not be his fault, it’s just a different habit and culture. I understood that intercultural relationships is very important to communicate and explain those differences clearly, not just expecting each other to know what they are supposed to do on certain social occasions. I’m sure I will definitely do something “wrong” when it comes to celebrate the Spring festival or getting to know his family (actually a video with some advice on that would be appreciated 🙏🏻🥰)

It's like for every 1 legit chinese person, they bring in 50 more illegals with them from the mainland. And they all have no manners. Spitting everywhere and talking loud even during the night.

I got my wife's parents down to one tenth of the asking price. Things like minor blemishes on the finish, she's not the newest model (has a younger sister) and I honestly had to question the claimed mileage. It all counts.

I teach English in China. Most of my students are kids, but I also teach a class of high school students. I've listened to some of them say, with complete sincerity, that China is the center of the world, China is the most important country in the world, China should be the leader of all other countries, China should spread Chinese culture all over the world, and all nations should follow Chinese culture and love China. These are very intelligent young adults saying these things.

Lol heck no I don't want a leader who just stands around stairing when someone is in need of help " don't get involved " or someone who avoids confrontation like letting people butt in line. Or someone who can't think of their own ideas and only copies others. Your a better person than me I would have spoken up after hearing that nonsense Center of the world my ass.

Things are not too prevalence outside of China but the general description still applies to the older generation outside of China, case in point in 2005 when I was in Australia with my boss for a job stint the guy still want to look for Chinese food and that perplexes me much because we grew up with that in Malaysia but for me I choose to try Balkan food instead because that is what we don't get back home, how it taste is another matter to me as the main thing is I won't eat something I can find back home.

      No, it is different.
There are people that just like what they are use to, no problem with that.
But the mindset of Chinese, especially China Chinese, is "It ain't China Chinese food, it is inferior food".

@@judymckee5992 You cooked while you were travelling? I eat plenty of Chinese food. When I'm in Asia, I tend to not eat a lot of American food. Once in a while maybe, but not primarily. I'm in America right now, heading back to Asia soon, and for now I'm enjoying my country's food. Soon I'll head back overseas and enjoy what they have over there, not go seek out food from where I come from.

@@jintsuubest9331 I don't think the Chinese thinks other foods are inferior. I'm a Canadian born Chinese, and as much as I love steak/pizza/bibimbap/kraft dinner. I often have stomach issues eating some of those foods as often as normal Canadians do. We are all human, but people evolved and lived all differently over the globe. I know for a fact Chinese people often have weaker stomachs than Americans or Europeans do. Good day! :D
