To be fair, anyone can stop in the middle of the highway. U dont know why they are stopping. They could have a mechanical issue, battery dies, tyre popped, run out of gas unknowingly..etc. Anything can happen to anyone. Good drivers react to it and not just run someome over.

I've had to calm down my doctor (who's from Beijing) after she had to deal with particularly obnoxious people one day.
She was almost in tears, she was so angry, as she told me that one of the reasons why she left China was to get away from the bad behavior...
My wife is from Guangdong, and is less vocal when she gets upset...

    • @chemech
      @chemech 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

@Xi the poo As far as I can tell, the mainland is a rather loose confederation roughly 10 regions, with shifting alliances between the various barons who run them...
All that the Communist Party did was to replace those feudal lords, and temporarily create a bit more of the illusion of solidity while acquiring modern weapons designs.
Absent the Cultural Devolution, Taiwan has managed to develop into a 21st Century culture and society while retaining most of the good aspects of traditional Mandarin society, and slowly diverging from the less desirable aspects.
Things aren't perfect, and some of the traditional Confucian cultural problems can still be found.
Also, as recently as 25 years ago, I was still witnessing tensions between the families from the Fujien based local culture, and the transplanted mainlanders - called "The Mandarins" - who tended to have higher status and better political connections within the KMT.
Let's not even discuss the native Taiwanese, who tend to still live in reservations that resemble the American Indian reservations.
I am hearing that years of improvements in the overall situation are slowly percolating down the societal ladder to these groups, and people have gotten rather fed up with the mainland in general.
Much as with the Hongkongers, the younger people on Taiwan really feel no particular affinity with the PRC, and just want the two countries to go their separate ways.
Also on the plus side, Taipei has maintained generally good relations with the US and Japan.

But they have a complete and total lack of respect for anything and everything in their lives, it’s not only confined to driving. I understand they haven’t been driving that long which is exactly why they should be some of the best and safest drivers in the world cause they’ve had almost one hundred years of us doing it right and wrong in the US to learn from and build their systems and education off of but instead they put a CCP (Chinese Crash Permit) in every box of cereal and fortune cookies for a month and whallah, you’ve suddenly been issued a drivers license valid as long as your alive!!!
It’s a fricken joke!!!! China’s leaders want everyone in the world to think and view them as a super power and these idiots can’t even fricken drive!! Hell, most of them have a hard enough time on their child’s moped, and they expect the US and Russia and Germany and the U.K. to actually take them seriously about ANYTHING?????????? LOL 😂, that’s a bigger joke than Hillary trying to run for President............ again!! Lol 😂
And the white car that caused the two trucks to wreck shows just how truly selfish ALL Chinese really are, after the trucks were stopped and nobody else was gonna hit them, then off we go!! Doesn’t matter if they caused anyone in the trucks to get hurt, the driver of the car was fine and the car still had gas so off we go and we will let someone else worry about the cleanup!!! The exact same way the Chinese viewed the China flu getting out and trying to kill the rest of the world so yes, I’m a bit pissed off at the sorry ass fucr’s!! The Chinese can’t even have a wet dream without screwing it up!!!!!! But all of that’s cool, karma is a bitch and billions of Chinese will not survive 2020 because the selfish wannabe ruler is gonna get 3/4’s of the population washed out to sea when all these dams start collapsing next month. Let’s see if they can build some tofu arks in record time like they do all of their housing and dams. Everything made in China crumbles soon after you start using it, they have established a long track record of all of that stuff, but this time it’s gonna cost yourselves your lives, your country, etc, all out of a lack of respect and being selfish to the bone!!! Thank you so much for your insight on this subject. It truly explains the problem here in New Zealand. We have many Chinese folks who've moved here to live & chose the largest populated area of Auckland area. Our public transport system is not that fantastic so most people have to drive a car simply to just get anywhere. It's become legendary the terrifying, downright dangerous driving (no) skills shown by so many Chinese folks who just simply buy a car & begin to drive, often not even bothering to get a license!.... Frustratingly if you make any complaint or bring attention to a near miss etc you are more likely vilified and accused of being a racist than having your concern listened to!.. (too bad if you and your family were nearly killed in whatever situation). There's also a massive problem with Chinese folks who arrive at the Auckland Airport as a tourist, pickup a rental vehicle and proceed to explore the entire country with zero ability or understanding of roadsigns, speed limits the correct side to drive on etc etc. There have been many headon fatal crashes as result, the NZ tax payer picks up all the medical costs of the at blame tourist too, it's a ridiculous system that was intended to prevent anyone having an accident from having to sue. Even more stupid is that nothing is being done about it!

Stopping on a two lane main road without any attempt to pull over to the side to get out and take photos is a blatant display of entitlement and total disregard for the safety every road user including themselves.
For the safety of all road user Australia should not allow Chinese tourists to drive on Australian roads unless they have and Australian driving license.
Perhaps large on-the-spot fines or impounding the vehicle for breaking road rules and dangerous driving might help in relaying the fact that their poor driving behaviour will not be tolerated outside of their home country.

It was interesting as I noticed they were somewhat surprised and taken aback that *I* didn't move. It was explained to me that our Western concept of asking the immovable person to move by saying "Excuse me!" was considered to be the height of rudeness by traditional Chinese culture... and the Chinese immigrant would be clueless why the arrogant barbarian was barking at them in some incomprehensible gibberish rather than speaking - or preferably not saying anything - in the civilized tongue.
I tried to explain that "Excuse me" is quite a bit more civilized than "Move your stupid arse!!!" which is the fully justified command... the then young lady kind of stared at me blankly... in shock that Americans were so *rude*...

Maybe they just enjoy having some reason to trigger an argument. Reminds me of a saying I heard some time ago... 'some people aren't happy unless they've got something to be unhappy about'. Of course it's an contradiction in terms but I'm sure most get the point.
Doesn't seem a lot of effort goes into keeping the peace amongst others in (communist) China. It doesn't always work but many times I've seen a 'westerner' politely say to another... 'excuse me'... and the other one instantly respondes... 'oh... sorry about that'. It all ends with a smile and no harm done. Much classier than those who seem to search out reasons to create an argument IMO. Though it is safe to say that westerners also have similar disagreeable types of people. Seeing the driving style in China, I am reminded of what it was like as someone from mainland USA (rural Texas no less) trying to drive in Puerto Rico - notably in the San Juan metro area where I was stationed in the mid-1990's. When I first got there during orientation we were told that if we drove there on a daily basis that we had a 90+ percent chance of being in at least one traffic accident. It would be pouring down rain with visibility down to less than 50 meters and on a 3 lane (3 lanes each way) divided highway there would often be 5 lanes wide of cars doing 110-130kph (70-80mph) - and in this same situation where in a all-wheel drive 1st Gen Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX (one of the best handling cars of it's day) I was only comfortable driving 80-90kph (50-55mph) at most. If they wanted to merge into your lane, oftentimes they would forcibly do so to the point that if you didn't stop to let them merge they would hit you. Another problem there was many locals would try to drive far faster than their cars (at the time mostly Hyundai Elantras, Toyota Tercels, and Mitsubishi Mirages) could safely do. One of the worst accidents I saw was an Elantra that passed me on the highway doing 160+ kph ( I didn't think they would even go that fast) that wound up overturning and subsequently impaling the passenger compartment on a length of guardrail. Many there were surprised that I drove as cautiously as I did given where I was from and their perception of our wide open roads here in Texas - especially considering I was in my early 20's at the time and had a decently fast and good handling sports car. I had to remind them that while many of the roads here in Texas are wide open country roads, they are often full of unexpected hazards - sudden spots of poor road quality (bumpy, dips, turns that were banked wrong), wildlife such as deer and wild hogs that posed strike hazards, or the all too common trash/debris suddenly flying out of the bed of a pickup truck ahead of you and that is why even on those roads you had to be careful. In the San Juan area this even extended into criminal activity - during that same orientation we were told by the PSP (the State Police/Highway Patrol there) that in the San Juan metro area when approaching a light signaled intersection (red/yellow/green light) not to come to a full stop - to instead slow down as we approached the intersection and scan for crossing traffic and proceed if it was clear and to only slow down as little as needed to let the crossing car pass. This was because of the high risk of carjackings in the metro area.

That last is the same reason I refuse to drive in China. We're taught in an environment where the actions of other drivers are reasonably predictable. We drive fast, but you generally know what we'll do next. I can't predict it there.
Anyway, my first time in Shenyang taught me not to fear death. Fate would determine my time. Nothing I could modify. I've come close to being wiped out by a bus racing across a pedestrian crossing without batting an eye.
This was fine until I went back with my pregnant wife. (I taught her to drive in Australia. She won't consider driving in her home city) and my father in law picked us up from the station one night.
In addition to the belief that if he steered slowly he had more time to react that I had to break in my wife (don't try to look for logic in that. If you can see it, you've got bigger problems. I'm not talking about driving slowly, I'm talking about steering slowly) he did stuff like kept his lights turned off in case he dazzled someone.
That was the first time I'd been afraid in a car since my first visit there. It was the last time. But it shows who's on the road.
NB: this doesn't count driving from the blue mountains to Sydney at night. Danger in that case was hitting kangaroos or wombats that were wandering over the road. Ended up going at 50 kph until I started to hit actual towns. Would have felt incredibly guilty if I hit one of those.

That blocking worked out (Thank God!), but consider that as luck for both sides for not getting rammed. Block while you can, but also keep an eye on your rear view mirror. It would be better to be more communicative - honking, hand gestures, sign language, shouting. Best yet, give 'em a piece of mind in their own language.

This indeed is a little weird to me as Dutchman. We also have very strict legislation regarding this topic (I wouldn't be surprised if the Chinese just copied our legislation here), but these laws simply aren't enforced until safety (and security) becomes an issue. Changes can be made to cars officially, but that is a bureaucratic nightmare.

First of all, I lived in China for over 20 years because I couldn't afford a car, I didn't even have a Chinese driver's license, and I'm very thankful I didn't learn to adapt to that style of car driving. Later immigrant lived in the United States for more than a year, I learned to drive and passed the car and motorcycle driver's license, I usually observe how people drive, yeld, and stop signs that I have never seen in my life. American car culture has taught me respect for the right of the way, respect for other drivers, and freedom.
In China, they think it is safe to go slow. They have to step on the brakes to slow down at traffic lights, and it is not a problem to affect others by driving. They are very selfish. The Chinese driver's license considers reversing, parking on the side, and more skills. But there is no teaching about awareness, the right of the road. The most important thing is the driver's license test, no shoulder check is required for lane changes.
Many people in this country are very rich, and all of them have high-end German cars, especially in Shanghai. But Shanghai prohibits motorcycles from going on all kinds of roads, and the right of way for motorcycles larger than 250cc is about 60,000 US dollars.
I speak very directly, in my opinion there like HELL.

To the point that I believe the quality of driving would improve drastically overnight if China regulated window tinting like much of the USA does. This way, not having selfish and bad drivers hide behind their fully darkened windows would expose them literally to their actions... and play upon their cultural obsession with saving face. Exposing and embarrassing these drivers would immediately encourage obeying driving laws and the rules of the road.

I lived in Zhengzhou for 2 years (2010 - 12) where the driving is particularly bad. One time, I went to Xiamen on the coast for about a week and I noticed that driving was rather better there than in Zhengzhou. It took me a while to figure out why but when I came back, I noticed that traffic control on the roads in Zhengzhou is very bad. It's not uncommon in Zhengzghou for there to be a big intersection with only 1 or 2 traffic lights each way and almost no line markings. By contrast in Xiamen (what I saw of it that is) the road line marking seemed quite good. In Zhengzhou, cars go everywhere because there was no clear guidance as to where they should be. Xiamen on the other hand was more like Singapore or Hong Kong - fairly orderly. So I blame the road engineering for at least some of the problem. In Zhengzhou, there seems to be an emphasis on building new roads not on getting what there is to work properly. As a civil engineer myself, I can see that there is potential for massive improvements which would get the traffic moving much quicker and much safer. Building elevated freeways is glamorous. Making what you've got work is un-appreciated and un-glamorous. Chinese engineers should go learn some lessons from Japan.
