  • Here's a video I made about my 1994 Toyota Hilux Surf SSR-X Widebody 3.0 KZN130. It's the same as a 4Runner except it's RHD (right hand drive) and it uses a 3.0L Inline 4 Turbo Diesel (1KZ). Definitely not as fast as the north american diesel trucks, but much more efficient!

    that truck is flat out amazing. The only i would sell a truck that is if someone were to trade a hilux pickup 4 door with the same sr5 package. Pretty much what I'm trying to say is, that is one the rarest trucks in the US.

      I have had my 4runner for 24 years ! Last year it underwent a full suspension upgrade front and rear, repainted in the original metallic grey with four coats of paint and three coats of clear. Engine is now the 4.0 litre V6 . Carpets and interior are like new ,due to seat covers. The 4.0 litre V6 is a vast improvement over the old 3.0 litr V6. All the USA emission control crap has been removed which makes it perform better and a fuel consumption of 10L/100. And before I forget the 5 speed manual has been replaced with a heavy duty five speed automatic. Not for sale . My big and fully equiped 4x4 is a Landcruiser with to many things to mention.

    great little truck. searching for one for a camper conversion. it's the only suv that can travel highways comfortably and be reliable deep in the ditch. it's a weapon of choice to conquer Australia by car for a reasonable price and be sure you are safe.

    Nice truck man, I'm building an LHD version & I have a 22RE 1st Gen (full OME sus). IMO the OME suspensions, for being so "firm" and holding the payload like they do still flex great. I'm in Oregon so we've got the same kind of trails as western CA and I've hauled 3000lbs of rafting gear out to Idaho and had to be in 4-Lo CRAWLING over a really messed up put in road without any issue. I also lived in Australia fr a few years and all our trucks were OME sus. I wouldn't use anything else.

    Top video. I've just bought a 1993 Surf 3.0TD SSR-G in blue, and this helped me decide : )
    One thing though, I live in a RHD market, and the turn signals (or 'indicators' as we call them) are not usually on the side that the Surf has them - I have no idea why the Surf is the other way round to every other car, whether RHD or LHD. It means I keep hitting the wiper switch at the moment whenever I go to make a turn...

    Ah that would have been nice to know, the previous owner swapped the original 4.10 gearing swapped for 4.56 or something. I had the original gears but I never thought to get them put back in, they had LSD too! But it's long gone now, after selling I used the cash on a 84 AE86 and a 98 UCF20. I've been shopping around for a HDJ81 but finding it hard to find them at a reasonable price...It would be nice to find one that doesn't rattle inside. Now all I own is LHD, but I'll buy another JDM soon.

      Did you turn up the boost on this one?

    • @fpsColton
      @fpsColton  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First car was a 91 Aristo V. If I were you, I would trade the subaru for the truck if the one you're looking at is a 3.0 litre (1KZ) and in good condition. They are getting scooped up worldwide and the supply is running out. The boost increases on it's own once you open up the exhaust a bit, so yeah mine had a few extra psi.

    • @BushmanCanuck

    Realizing you sold it, but an interesting FYI... taller tires would have gotten you better mileage... We ran 35's on my friends 1KZ'd 1st Gen and he was getting 27-30mpg and only 20 with the 33's. It's all about the taller gearing and like you said all the powers down low. The taller tires with the 4.10 gears are PERFECT for the 1KZ and a 4K lb. 4Runner. What did you replace the truck with??? Sounds like you've had some fun cars aye, we have that in common.

    Was it hard finding an insurance company to insure a right hand drive car?

    • @fpsColton
      @fpsColton  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Robin Banks It has been difficult in the past, but things seem to have gone back to normal. Basically, you're only able to get PLPD (minimum) coverage, so the cost is the same regardless of your vehicle (since your not covered). With my latest purchase (MKIV Supra) insurance was totally fine with it no questions asked, but the vehicle before that I was told that the only reason they were allowing me to add it to my policy was because I currently had a RHD vehicle.. They were actually going to decline me but they called me back after a minute and decided to make an exception. This is all my experience in Alberta, your mileage may vary.

      +NightRush Thanks for the quick reply. I talked to my insurance (im from Ontario) and the broker needs to talk to the adjuster but she doesn't think they will insure it. Found out we can't legally swap engines in'murica. It's done, but if they ever enforce federal law, you can lose your vehicle. I think I'll just grab a 25+yo surf/4runner with the 3.0 (I have an Airstream to pull) and drive it like i stole it. If that engine's not powerful enough, I'll drop a 3.9L Isuzu in it. Not technically legal, but much harder to detect in a vehicle that came as a diesel and is documented as such.

    • @fpsColton
      @fpsColton  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would blame the marketing teams for this. It would seem that at some point they decided north americans like to have numbers and letters combined, usually indicative of the vehicles specification. 4Runner kind of implies it's a 4WD. They seem to think that we really like acyronms, RSX, LS400, 240SX, etc.. In Japan they tend to give actual names to the models, Integra, Celsior, Silvia. These names don't really imply anything about the vehicle specification. It wasn't always like this, if you look at some of the longest lived models such as Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic, they still have proper names. This is because at the time those models were introduced into North America the manufacturers left the names alone, and because they've since become such icons they wouldn't dare rename them. It's possible the influence came from the naming conventions of brands like BMW and Mercedes, these brands hold a certain degree of prestige, even in Japan.

      I like to put these on my imports, helps fill in the blank mounting bracket and shows some of the history. The plate on the surf was from the same prefecture as the dealership who initially sold the vehicle! (Gifu)
