- Back in the '90s, an incredibly special Nickelodeon event was held that serves as an interesting moment in the network's history - they actually buried a time capsule to be opened 50 years in the future!

Speaking of Nickelodeon, the SpongeBob episode "Buried in Time" also involves characters burying a time capsule for 50 years.

Well think about it. In 1992, the only way to record something was with the use of a video camera and a cassette inside of it. When it becomes 2042, we might have something either still be using smartphones to record the unopening or something more advanced like smart glasses.
That is what makes the Nick Capsule so interesting. How far we've progressed in history. And that's why when I am 40, cuz today I just turned 18, imma find my way to the unopening of the Nick Time Capsule and witness history in the making!
The rollerskates were the rollerblade type, which was very popular in the 90s and its own fad for a while. So I think it was an appropriate addition.

I remembered seeing the building during my school trip to Universal Orlando. I believe it was just closed and back then I didn't realize it.
And now the current Nickelodeon Studios is located in Burbank, California, and that's where the time capsule is being held as of today.

I remember seeing a comment from a former employee of the Nick Hotel that after they redid the hotel to the Holiday Inn, they had a hard time trying to find the actual capsule and had to do sonar detections just to find it to no avail, which is probably why there hasn't been any pictures of the time capsule since the suppose move to the Nick Studios in CA
That's exactly what happened. Since the hotel rebranding, Nickelodeon immediately took the capsule with them and buried it at their current studios in Burbank. Hopefully the capsule itself remained unopened after it's been dug up and moved twice.
wow....April 30th, 2042, I remember seeing a youtube video when i was 9 years old in 2012 at the time. Now looking at it, I'll be old. I'll still be 38 (turning 39 in July) by the time it comes out. I'll probably have a robot wife and hybrid kids lol

I love time capsules and it's exciting Nick has one even if it filled primarily with objects we still have today.
I am surprised Nick didn't fill a new capsule a few years later with unaired episodes of classic cartoons of the time so that when it was open the children of that time period can have at least one last moment of childhood perhaps with children of their own

I’m actually working on a time capsule currently. Its taken me awhile typing up the letter and finding all the items but it’s almost ready to be sealed, which will take a lot of time as well making sure it’s water tight.

It would have been really cool if the time capsule was still in Orlando.. a big point of planting a time capsule is to see what changes came about in those years, not move it every time a branch of Nickelodeon shuts down. In 2042, a lot of people aren’t going to know Nickelodeon studios existed in Orlando now.

I always used to see it in front of the lobby of The Nick Hotel when I was a little girl. I knew what was inside, but I always wondered what it would be like when I was 42 and the capsule was opened. Maybe I would go there with my family and see the ceremony? If I only I knew the hotel would never see the day...
Just a theory, but I think during the first move or second move they probably removed the contents and either placed it in a more secure container (which would make logical sense) or they took the stuff out and have it in a warehouse under "time capsule" so when the moment does occur everything would look rather pristine. Since typically things in time capsules often either rot, fade and become damage.
