True story - this was probably around 2003. My mom was at a gas station and ran into Kurt. She knew I was such a big fan and wanted to get me an autograph but she didn’t have anything for him to sign. He told her to call and put me on the phone. I’m about 9 years old and my dad comes running into the living room and hands me the phone. I say “hello?” All I hear is “this is Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle, how are you?” He talked to me for about 5 minutes and thanked me for supporting him. As I got older I appreciated that gesture so much more. Took the time out if his day to make a 9 year old die hard wrestling fan’s life.
i cant remember who commented this, but they said watching "perc angle" wrestle was like watching an artist creating their best work on their downward spiral. not that you want to see them ever get there, but you admire the fact they burnt so brightly during that period of darkness and were content with producing the absolute best, even at the cost of self-destruction.
A few years ago my sons and I met him at a meet and greet in Los Angeles (shout out wrestling guy store in HP). We only had enough for the photo op and we were last in line. We waited for about three hours. When we walked in, my sons were in awe and their eyes lit up to see the legend. After we took our photo, Kurt asked my son for his replica WWE title. I told Kurt that we only paid for the photo op, he looked at me and winked and signed the title for my kids. My kids were so happy and they still talk about that day. Thank you Kurt! You gave us an amazing memory and now my youngest is waiting to join Santino Brothers wrestling school as soon as he’s old enough because of you.
I will never say the name 'Perc Angle' anymore going forward. He's right, it's all just fun, but it isn't fun when we know it actually hurts his feelings. Kurt seems like such a well adjusted guy. He's the best.
@@zepherscottyI get what you're saying but if the perk angle nickname ends up becoming as disrespectful as calling Damian priest the bisexual Undertaker I'm not going to call him that either
If you pop pills, get DUI's and risk other wrestlers life's in the ring you shouldn't cry about it. He was in a bad place, but blaiming fans for a nickname shouldn't be the lesson learned here.
Kurt’s definitely in my mount rushmore of wrestling. He had it all the mic skills, character work, and was the best of the best in the ring. The fact he even preformed better outside the WWE with TNA and indies cements that for me.
Mad respect and major props to Kurt Angle for always talking about Chris Benoit and their matches openly without trying to fit into the misguided PR-related implications of the same. We all knew Chris through his wrestling first, and we are allowed to discuss and celebrate it in a dignified manner. Nobody condones his alleged final actions in life. There is a respectful balance that can always be maintained while discussing Chris Benoit, and Kurt Angle always strikes that balance perfectly. And, not to forget, their matches are LEGENDARY! We don't get such intense matches in the generally softer WWE style and spot-infested wrestling in WWE today. Thanks.🍀
First we do get similarly intense bouts with Sheamus, Ring General and Dragunov. Second, I do not condone what Chris did but I acknowledge the fact that he was a great wrestler and his bouts with Kurt were fantastic. I feel like by erasing Chris they erase important parts of their history. History no matter how horrible, should never be ignored. We must learn from history. They also erased Nancy and her contributions to wrestling and that isn't right.
@tayojones9460 I agree with you about Sheamus, Gunther, and Dragunov. For me, they are the exception to the rule in WWE today in this regard. I thoroughly admire Gunther though. He reminds me a lot of Chris and Kurt in terms of sheer intensity and ring general-like presence in the ring. I also agree that Nancy needs to be in the HOF. Also, their son Daniel should be posthumously awarded the Warrior Award if they are still giving it. And, most certainly, Chris Benoit's history with the WWE should never be erased or forgotten. History should never be erased. It needs to be used as a source of learning or else history tends to repeat itself for good and for bad. The ending of the Benoit family was tragic but Chris' tenure with the WWE has provided us with some of the best matches and moments in the history of professional wrestling. Thanks.🍀
@@tayojones9460 No we absolutely do not. Just because these guys can perform some moves does not mean their bouts are intense. Cos they're not. Kurt does what most retired wrestlers should be doing. He stays out of the ring and doesn't tarnish what he build, like so many others that return to the ring completely out of shape or without the capability of using their bodys anymore. It's sad to hear that he can't wrestle because of his neck being fused together on its own, but it's a blessing in disguise. That way his legacy stays intact, his health isn't constantly at risk, and most importantly his wife and kids have him around and in their lifes. Very glad to hear he's been sober for 14 years too. I really hope Jeff Hardy pulls through and does the same for everyones sake.
Glad Chris asked about Kurt’s current neck problems. I was wondering if he ever got that disc replacement surgery that he mentioned on Rogan. Horrible to hear that his neck is permanently screwed up and he has to live in pain. Tragic stuff for a legend who gave us so much entertainment over the years.
One of my inspirations as a kid and even now as an adult. Im recovering from surgery currently and look at him as fuel to keep recovering and hopefully training again someday soon.
This episode with Kurt Angle flew by it felt like it was only 20 minutes chris plz bring Kurt back on soon again we need more stories with Kurt I really enjoyed this episode
Kurt has always been my idol since I was little. When I was 12 I ran into Kurt at kennywood amusement park. He got a big crowd was nice to everyone but pulled me to the side probably protecting the kids from crowd and talked to me for 15 minutes on his vacation time when he never had too. That one on one with Kurt changed my life as a kid. I went to see him at a signing when i got older and also i was there live at his birthday milk spray down on Chad Gable and Otis. Kurt is a great man.
Nothing but respect for the olympic hero, it hurts hearing how much pain Kurt goes through to this day, thank you for giving so much of yourself for our entertainment ❤
His nick name should've been THE ALL-ROUNDER, because he has had every single skill. Imagine : OLYPIC GOLD MEDALIST, THE WRESTLING MACHINE, THE ALL-ROUNDER, KURT AAAAANGLEEEEE !
The great thing about Kurt Angle was the range of his character he could be the goofball heel, the underdog face or the Wrestling Machine and they all worked.
Kurt inspired me and continues to be a role model for me. I failed as a wrestler about as bad as one can fail. Freshman year in HS: 0-10 all pins. But I took the intensity, integrity, and intelligence into my professional life and have been crushing it. Kurt was a role model when I didn't have one. I hope he gets to have a great retirement.
This was an amazing interview. Kurt is one of my favorite wrestling icons of all time. I wanted to be as good as him in my amateur career. I wasn't but, I am thrilled that I got to see a good chunk of his active career. Thank you Chris and thank you Kurt 🪙🪙🪙
huge respect the way he goes about the benoit stuff..he makes it known he doesn’t support what he did, but still says his best matches were with him. which, they were. unfortunately benoit situation doesn’t just affect his family..but it affected other wrestlers and their legacies too
As a young kid from Guadalajara, Mexico after moving to the U.S. at 7 years old, the WWE was the first live show of any kind that I fell in love with and Kurt Angle was a huge part of my childhood. My 🐐🏅& one of a kind.
Amazing interview! I wish I could meet Kurt one day, seems like such a humble down to earth person. Love that he accepts he’s a little goofy and that what made his early work in WWE work so well! Kurt made me hate him and love him growing up but I always respected his work and believe he is one of, if not the greatest to ever bless the pro wrestling/sports entertainment scene! Don’t wait til someone is gone to give em their flowers💐
Feel so bad for him that his neck fused. People don’t realise how bad that actually is. My uncle has the same problem but his neck is at an arch so he can’t even look up properly or move his body in a certain direction. Kurt might not be as bad but I can’t imagine the pain he goes through just to get up every morning. Mad respect for him
Just watched the hour long iron man match between Angle and Lesnar from 2003 so this interview came up at the perfect time. I first watched wrestling at the grand old age of 12 in August 2003, a Smackdown involving Lesnar, Angle and Mr McMahon, and followed Angle through his rivalries with the likes of Eddie Guerrero, John Cena, Rey Mysterio, Big Show and Shawn Michaels, and then his days in TNA. His matches transcend time, and are still great to this day, and by far the best looking moonsault in the business for me. Much love to a childhood hero 🙏
I don't care if it was all in fun or not, I have never called Kurt Angle, "Perc Angle" and I never will. I remember the first time hearing about it and I knew that it was disrespectful from the beginning. I'm a TRUE Kurt Angle fan, he's been in my top 5, for a long time. And any "fan" that has ever called him that, is not a fan at all. Because you don't toy or make a joke about somebody that has been struggling with a serious addiction. We all have our demons and there are those that has to be spiritually strong to overcome those demons, and I'm glad Kurt was able to do it💯✝️🙌🏾. God bless him
Nah Chris Van Fleet you are one of the best interviewers in wrestling. Its 03:30 am in Cape Town and somehow i just watched this entire video straight without getting bored. Also the fact that you rarely interrupt your guests makes you golden. 💯💯💯
I’ve seen a few Kurt angle podcasts and they’re all kinda similar but with you Chris I had to watch again to see what you asked and what Kurt would say he’s one of my all time favourites from being one of two of my first wrestling figures I watch him wherever I can thanks CVV
Being a 2000's kid my wrestling goat for a long time was John Cena and I only discovered Kurt Angle once I was an adult and search online about wrestling and feuds. Discovered him, discovered that he was John's first match in WWE and decided to watch more and more of him and man I just adore his work. From his Olympic medal, to his wrestling career in WWE and TNA I often go back and watch his matches and feud they are just freaking awesome. Also found out about "Perc Angle" and every time I was like "he was amazing during this period, but he must have struggled so much with injuries and everything if this was his nickname" and the more interviews I watch/listen of him the more I learn about the things he went trough and yet still gave us incredible matches. Always will adore this man and respect him. Has a wrestler and also a man for overcoming addiction, and being a family man; his legacy will indeed keep being talked about.
This man is underrated because he should be frequently in the GOAT convo. He is the complete professional wrestler. Charisma, technical excellence, and pure aura.
@Habück nah, that was already an established meme before Marky 😭. Its probably from that old Bean kicked in video of Kurt but i dunno. Classic meme though

That way his legacy stays intact, his health isn't constantly at risk, and most importantly his wife and kids have him around and in their lifes. Very glad to hear he's been sober for 14 years too. I really hope Jeff Hardy pulls through and does the same for everyones sake.
Man I love this guy's Angle slams and the angle lock was great too. Thanks for everything Kurt.
Awesome interview, Chris! I've been waiting to see this for some time. Can't wait to meet Kurt next month at a live event in Florida.
Kurt angle’s year in 2002 is one of the greatest years a wrestler has ever had. He was the best wrestler in the world.
One of my inspirations as a kid and even now as an adult. Im recovering from surgery currently and look at him as fuel to keep recovering and hopefully training again someday soon.
Kurt Angle is the goat imo because he was good at everything. A lot of legends usually only excel in certain areas
Agreed. Some good on the mic but wrestling only so so or vice versa. Or can only do certain moves. Pretty much from day one kurt could do it all.
One of my fav interviews. Good job Chris. Angle is the man. Great interview.
Glad you enjoyed it!
My dad’s favorite wrestler and my favorite guy I loved to hate in the ring. Kurt is so awesome
This episode with Kurt Angle flew by it felt like it was only 20 minutes chris plz bring Kurt back on soon again we need more stories with Kurt I really enjoyed this episode
kurt, thank you for all the memories! we’re all so glad you came to the WWF in the attitude era
I second that
Kurt has always been my idol since I was little.
Wrestling Machine Kurt Angle …. One of the best Technical Wrestlers of AllTime Fair to say 🫡🙌🏾♻️💪🏾🤝🏾🤞🏾‼️💯
His nick name should've been THE ALL-ROUNDER, because he has had every single skill. Imagine : OLYPIC GOLD MEDALIST, THE WRESTLING MACHINE, THE ALL-ROUNDER, KURT AAAAANGLEEEEE !
Bless him, man. He forgot to mention that he’s a rapper too.
"Everything you can do, I can do better.
Even when I rap, I rap more better"
The absolute GOAT, he had it all (wrestling and promo skills, charisma, comedy gold, ruthless babyface/heel, legit wrestler with a gold medal)
The great thing about Kurt Angle was the range of his character he could be the goofball heel, the underdog face or the Wrestling Machine and they all worked.
Kurt Angle is my GOAT. I had the pleasure of chatting with him for about 15 minutes and he was an absolute delight.
CVV been killing it with the interviews lately with the legends
Kurt inspired me and continues to be a role model for me. I failed as a wrestler about as bad as one can fail. Freshman year in HS: 0-10 all pins. But I took the intensity, integrity, and intelligence into my professional life and have been crushing it. Kurt was a role model when I didn't have one. I hope he gets to have a great retirement.
I’m never calling him perc angle again for the simple fact that he said it hurts his feelings he deserves that respect
So sad to hear Kurt’s still in constant pain/numbness. Wishing him the best
Always a treat listening to Kurt Angle thanks CVV!
Kurt is definitely my favorite wrestler of all time. He's got the full package. He's an awesome human being.
Thank you, Angle!
Off work tomorrow, few cold ones and a CCV upload. This is happiness!
Really good interview - great questions! Kurt was always my favorite wrestler to watch. He certainly gave it all in the ring.
Anytime I am in Pittsburgh, I hope to run into him. I doubt it'll happen ever but it would be awesome to meet him.
I’ve seen a few Kurt angle podcasts and they’re all kinda similar but with you Chris I had to watch again to see what you asked and what Kurt would say he’s one of my all time favourites from being one of two of my first wrestling figures I watch him wherever I can thanks CVV
Interviewing The Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle once again. Love to see it. Oh it's true.
IT'S DAMN TRUE !
@Vm94-p7u its super damn true
@@carguy29-oo5wqsuper duper uper true!!!
Love Kurt🏅Angle!
🥇Intensity🥈Integrity🥉Intelligence
I just got done defending Kurt on tiktok like 45 minutes ago. Definitely one of the greatest of all time!
defending??
Been a long time since I last saw Angle, he's so thin now, my childhood's slowly fading man
I’m jealous that I was still too young to realise how great Kurt Angle was💔.
Man teens and young adults of those days had a gem to watch💔.
I loved Kurt. His medal was the first item I ever bought online from the original wwf shop. I wore it everywhere.
This man is underrated because he should be frequently in the GOAT convo.
He is the complete professional wrestler. Charisma, technical excellence, and pure aura.
Doesn't matter what wrestler comes and goes, Kurt Angle will forever be my favorite wrestler of all time.
I love your interviews Chris. Your knowledge of wrestling shines through in the quality of your questions. Keep rocking it!
Really beautiful to see him step back at 9:40 and fix up what he said, such a great guy
This is a great episode. I absolutely love hearing his stories from his time in the ring.
Definitely a legend!!!! One of my fav wrestlers growing up. He is definitely a top 10 wrestler
He just easily admitted that people calling him perc angle hurt his feelings . This dude found an inner peace that I admire
I'm so happy he brought up Perc Angle 😭😂
everybody else would be salty about it. I think it was invented by Marky aka The Hawk.
@Habück nah, that was already an established meme before Marky 😭. Its probably from that old Bean kicked in video of Kurt but i dunno. Classic meme though
Vince came out the closet 😂 I'm dead 😂
Chris, you are simply my favorite TH-cam channel on the platform! Keep it up man!
Kurt Angle = The Wrestler’s Wrestler
I like that Kurt is doing all these podcasts, because it seems easy that he has to answer the same questions over and over
Kurt is the greatest!! I always love listening to his interviews
"Sure Rock. Drink up." CVV you're killin me!!!!! I remember that promo so much hahahaa
Chris has been dropping nothing but A+ interviews lately.
🙏🙏
Sir thank you for this fantastic show. This has gotten me through alot of dark days and still continues to do so. Thank you so much🙏🙏
I wish like hell that time-travel was real so we could get 2002-2005 Kurt Angle against Gunther. If they were in the same era, it’d be insane.
You'll be able to generate that match with AI within the next couple of years 🤣
Kurt is SO open about everything. I teach kids about the 3 "I"s (It's True!) and I believe Integrity is the most important and toughest as well. Another phenomenal one CVV!! It's damn true!
I'm lucky that I met him last year in Australia 🇦🇺
I loved to hate Kurt Angle growing up (In the best way) but now that I'm older, I really appreciate just how great he was in the ring. And on top of that, he's also one of the funniest wrestlers of all time. Respect on every level to the Legend.
28:58 yeah one affected by that also is Jericho, he and benoit always had great chemistry and imho his greatest match in wwe is against him they just work magic together
This was a lovely interview thank you guys
Having Perc Angle in the title of an interview with Kurt is an automatic best interview ever.
So did you listen to them talk about perc angle?
@pleaseshutup7053 haven't listened yet, just thought it was funny. You wake up wanting to be offended?
@@spacegyoza listen to Kurt angle talk about fans calling him perc angle in this video they talk about twice in the middle then at the end. After you hear Kurt’s thoughts on it. Reply to my comment I’m curious to hear your thoughts
@@pleaseshutup7053 All i heard was a "They don't mean it disrespectful. They want to have fun. It's flattering. It's okay. Just don't call me that to my face".
@@TheLibermania he literally said it hurts his feelings I guess when a man talks about feelings most people are just conditioned to ignore that. Let me put it in a way you understand it. If your mother or female relative or gf said the name you call me or refer to me as even when I’m not around it hurts my feelings would you still keep referring to her as that name
Great interview, will never get tired of listening to Kurt. A true legend of the business and the goat for many 🐐🏅
Kurt is one of those very few people who I wouldn't dare to take on in a real wrestling style match even if he was 95 years old.
According to Matt Hardy, when Kurt first got in and developed a character, he said he had a quiet and intense and cold personality. That right there is him at his core.
