  • In the 19th century, he was a weirdo, today, he is a hero: Bartleby, a mysterious young rebel against the treadmill of an economic order that we call a society. Popping up in an advocates office to work as a scrivener, that is a human photocopying machine of documents, he very gently ceases to cooperate after a few days. He does not work, he does not answer questions, he does not budge, but only says: „I would prefer not to.“ If you have always wondered, whether you might just be a little cogwheel in a machine that is up to no good, here’s your hero. Michael Sommer and his Playmobil cast present a compact and entertaining summary of this classic short story. DISCLAIMER: WATCHING THIS VIDEO DOES NOT REPLACE READING THE ORIGINAL. It's just a summary, which means I have left out loads of things. I recommend reading it for yourselves

    Oh my God, this was beyond awesome!! I passed a restaurant with the name Bartleby and it triggered the literature piece. For some reason I couldn't remember the story, Half a second into your act, everything just flew back into my brain.I love your theatrical thing. People would be less bored in class if pieces of literature were taught in that fashion.

    Melville is one of my favorites and Bartleby one of the best short stories ever written by an American - that's why I was searching TH-cam for it. But, as clever and fun as this encapsulation is, the "moral" is a disservice to the depth of the story. There is no easy answer, as there never is in Melville (cf. not only Moby Dick, but the even more beautifully unfathomable Mardi or The Confidence Man). Of course the story is partly about the cold, entrapped industrial world of the 19th century, as the subtitle "A Story of Wall Street" hints with its double meaning. Of course Bartleby is heroic in his way. But he is also pretty insufferable, and the narrator tries his best and is as tolerant and fair as any person could be faced with such inexplicable rebellion. It is unwise to give any great work of fiction one simple moral (e.g. what's Othello saying? - oh yeah, just don't unfairly suspect your wife).

    When I read this in Junior High School.. I was too young and naive to understand the subtle nuances.. I only focused on the plight of Bartleby.. I know what it's "supposed" to represent.. but I only felt genuine sympathy for him.. and Grendel when I read Beowulf

    Sure, you have the option to say "I prefer not to" when facing work you do not want to do, but you also have to face the consequences. When I teach this story, I tell my students this is a cautionary tale, and the moral is--do your work. If you don't do you work, there are rather serious consequences, maybe not as serious as dying, but still.

    • @Axgoodofdunemaul
      @Axgoodofdunemaul 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You are right to teach this lesson. But keep in mind that many of our most gifted creative people are incapable of dealing with the "competitive workplace." Also keep in mind that many of the people who "do their work" all too well grow up to be the zombie-like parasites you see in the news every day.

    • @michaelgeiger4043
      @michaelgeiger4043 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Axgoodofdunemaul Keep also in mind that most of our gifted creative people have maybe one in one thousand actual ideas that are good. The rest are shite. this is a statistical fact.

    Well done on this, I'd like to give you more praise but... I'd prefer not to. It's got some pseudo Orwellian undertones alongside an old school moral narrative which you outline very well.
